Stuart:It's nice to hear someone backing up the comments i always state about the dreaded cleaning tape.Although the dry type recommend no more than a few minutes it only takes one indivdual to leave it in there playing for the full capacity and removing years of useful life from their cherished Beta's heads. The wet type leave all kinds of residue around the tape path and then you place a tape inside to get stuck to the residue. They are not thorough and would'nt spot other potential problems looming as a keen eye would. The capstan and pinch roller ARE one of the most important parts for a successful, problem free, drive of the tape in all modes and can have years of oxide on them especially if using old worn out tapes , best avoided. If you value your machine NEVER use a cleaning tape.If you want a quick fix for something you don't really care about or don't intend keeping then it may just be enough to enable you to play that special recording if following the instrustions to the 'T'.I personally would'nt touch them................Kevin

BTW Mike, don t use cleaning tapes - every site I have been to on vcr maintenance says they do more harm than good, wet or dry! Nasty things. I just spent 30 minutes cleaning the capstan shaft on my two sl-c9s using buds and meths and that was just the capstans! Add the pinch roller, ac heads, and other parts of the tape path and you can easily spend 45 minutes on one machine if its got a good build up of oxide. No cleaning tape can ever hope to shift all that in the 30 secods they reccomend you use them for.

Hi, regarding your haywire c5, is it playing at an even speed? If the audio sounds ok then it is. Tracking problems can be caused by a dirty or worn control head, but to clean it properly requires taking the top off and cleaning it nmanually with pure alcohol preferrably. If not surgigal spirit or meths will do, applied with cotton wool buds -note - DO NOT go anywhere near the video head drum with cotton wool buds! The control head is mounted on the same assembly as the linear audio head and this will be to the right of the video head cylinder - the control head will be on the left of the two and is usually black, and the linear audio head is silver. Clean them with cotton wool bud soaked in whichever of the 3 above you have until no more black comes off. It may be worth cleaining the pinch roller and capstan shaft (the metal shaft the pinch roller presses against when playing), in the same way. Regarding video head cleaning (always a last resort) use a strip of clean and good quality paper measuring about 2cm in height by 6 or 7 and soak one end in meths or whatever you are using. Hold the wet end gently against the drum so that your thumb is over the gap between upper and lower cylinders. Dont press hard! While holding it there rotate the head disc manually from the top damper assembly ANTICLOCKWISE for a few turns. Make sure the wet end of the paper is to the right, the dry end to your left. Use your left hand to hold the paper against the drum and your right hand to turn the head disc. Any other way and you risk damaging the head tips.

I have an SL-C5 which I've just 'dug out' from a cupboard, with the intention of copying some programme material to DVD. Having sorted out the 'rewind problem' by cleaning the inter wheel, I'm very disappointed to find that the tracking appears to go haywire about every 3 seconds. The picture is reasonable for a couple of seconds, then there is severe horizontal interference across most of the screen for about 2 seconds. This happens on all the tapes I have. I've checked that the head is clean by using a cleaning tape and also manually inspecting it. Please - does anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong? Please bear in mind that it hasn't been used for about 16 years, but has been stored in a dry cupboard, together with the tapes, away from magnetic fields.

Hello All. Firstly I like to say that my family and myself are happy that this board is up and running.

To tell you the truth, I was having withdrawls without a place to vent and to show-case the items that I buy on the old Bay.

I was taping this fabulous film on the Turner Channel with the SLHF900 that I bought from the Cleveland Football team.. The copy was perfect thru out the film until 3 seconds at the end during the credits, I saw a faint drop out.

I couldn't never watch this movie again and even though the wife and kid begged me to let them view this movie, I stood by my morals..

I told them that when I saw this rare film on the OLD BAY, I would bid on it.. 3 years later I finally found a sealed Beta HI FI and swooped this baby up before anyone could find it.. Check out the old link below..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170104712477

My kid says he's a little too old now to watch the movie.. Well that's life and I still enjoy those little munchkins and the great color film..

Let me not digress, When I popped in the OZ film on my 900, I noticed that the color was not perfect when I played the Beta movie..

I tried 35 HI FI tapes and they all played perfect.

Could it be the sealed OZ tape ?? How could it be, it was sealed??

By the way I just purchased my 12th Sony rewinder.....are you jealous?

eBay took down the listing mentioned above. Not sure why they'd do that. The only thing that appeared wrong with it was the cloud cuckoo-land price the seller wanted.

Anyway, the guy was selling 290 or so standard grade cassettes with cable type movies on them, plus a couple dozen factory records. It was listed as BIN only at $1685.

Numbnut thinks people will be willing to pay for his time pirating videos in the 1980's.

"No charge for recordings." lol

$4/tape for standard grade tapes containing "Karate Kid" and "Witness" (like that's some kind of steal), $25 "handling" + "most economical" UPS shipping.

One time offer, folks - better jump on this now.

Michael,

The M20 has a line/tuner selector in the top centre of the rear panel. Switch it to "tuner" and you should now be able to tune in the channels.

Stuart,

I have a 950 with a colour fault like the one you describe but it is always B&W.

I suspect that some of the frequency adjustments on the YC-40 board need checking.

1/ Record carrier set adjustment RV014 to give 3.8 +/- 0.038MHz as measured at pin 25 of IC009 with input set to line in/pcm.(Alignment manual pg 46 item 2. )

2/ Carrier shift adjustment. Set to line in/pcm AND beta PRO mode and adjust RV702 to give 4.3+/- 0.04MHz. (same measurement point as item 1/ above)

3/ APC adjustment. PLayback colour bar tape and measure frequency at pin 14 of IC006. Adjust CV001 to give 4.433619MHz +/-5Hz.

cheers Noel

Hi Noel, I have just swapped the ta-37 board with that from another 950, and this has cured the problem.I would not say the 950 the working board came from is a spares machine, but as well as the t901 problem on the faulty ta-37, it also has a black and white recording through av problem. av passes through in colour without problem, but when machien is turned on at the wall, it records colour from av on the first recording, but make a second recording and this is black and white. Turn machine off at wall and back on after several minutes and it records colour again. Press stop and record again though and its b/w..... I have no idea what this problem is caused by though. But I would like to get this machine repaired as it has superb heads.

Stuart,

The transformer can be desoldered and replaced but it is tight (5 of six pins from memory) and you can (or at least I can) destroy them when taking them out. You should be able to swap boards and get away with it if you have a spares machine.

LV901 adjusts the bias frequency to 65kHz and RV902 adjusts the bias level to achieve equal record playback for tones at 333Hz and 7kHz. RV901 adjusts the output level for -10dBs (in conjunction with test tape.)

Sorry for delay in getting back to you - I have only been checking this site occasionally.

Michael,

UK have different TV channel bandwidths/channel spacings (8MHz) versus Australias (7MHz) and as a result they also use a different sound carrier frequency. It is possible to have the TV modified but with the low cost of tube TVs these days it is hardly worth it. If you use the VCRs tuner and go AV to the TV, problem solved.

regards Noel

Michael, if your sanyo is an australian model and tv uk or vice versa, the differing pal standards of the uk and aus is the problem. The audio carrier frequency is different. Look at the page -

Noel, Is the t901 located on the tuner boad ta-37 in the hf950? I have seen a fault description on the 950 on the net, which says it is on this board. If so, is it possible to just swap the whole board with another to quickly fix the problem? Is it as simple as this, meaning no adjustments are necessary to the new board? I see there are no POTS whatsoever on this particular board, so is it possible to just swap the whole board? Cheers, Stuart.

Hello all,

I have listed a number of service manuals for various model PAL beta machines including the SLC9, SLF1E, SLC35 and SLF30.

Mark, I have some DC/DCs for sale but I prefer to do a changeover repair.

Stuart, The transformer can be replaced in the HF950 (and other HIFI machines that have this problem) but repair might be a bit difficult unless you are prepared to rewind the transformer. Apparently after years of ultrasonic vibration at the transformers operating frequency of around 60kHz the leads break off internally. I doubt you could repair/resolder what remains.

SL-C30 capstan servo hunting in picture search / FF.

I have a C30 which fully works, but the capstan servo seems to hunt somewhat during picture search. Even in fast forward, there is a distinct "vroom-vroom" sound and it is a possibly slightly slow.

If anyone has a diagram of the servo PCB and in particular which preset is which, please let me know. I don't have diagrams for the C20 / 30 /40 range. I'm hoping this is just an adjustment.

I've swapped over the reel drive motor assembly from a scrap machine because of the usual lower bearing wear on this one. I doubt that is related to the problem though.

Thanks for any info.

Questions about Sony cameras (need an answer by end of June 2007!):

What year was the HVC3000P released? Might it have been available in 1981? If not, does the HVC3000P look generally very similar to the HVC2000P/2010, which I'm assuming would have been available in 1981? The HVC3000P and HVC4000P certainly look sufficiently similar at a quick glance that you wouldn't notice the difference.

The reason is I'm assisting with mocking up a 1981 video recorder and camera scene.

Thanks all,

Brenda - you got the right tapes but in the wrong size. Betacam (and SP) tapes come in Large and Small sizes. The large ones allowed for up to 90 minutes of Betacam recording and were used in the VTR edit units. The small ones - the ones that'll fit in a Beta ED VCR - were for the camcorder.

Hi all, I live in the US and own a SL-HF750 which is the equivelant to the 950 in the UK. I figured I would post here since there is no beta chat page in the US. Sometimes this unit will shut down while playing, usually its when you try to use the other functions, like scanning in fwd or reverse. When this happens, if I power it off and on again, it will play again, sometimes it will continue to play or it will stop after a few seconds. Is this something that can be solved with a minor adjustment or would I be better taking it in for repair somewhere. I have found that if I dont fool with any of the buttons, just press play, most of the time it will play an entire tape without shutting off. So now when I record a show, I don't edit out the commercials, usually it will record the whole program without stopping. It plays with a great picture and audio and everything else functions properly including the slo mo, so it would be worth fixing. I may end up selling, but am not sure right now. I have the original remote with the jog shuttle. Any ideas?

Feeling quite happy with myself today. I have resurrected a c9 that at one point I was going to use for spares to full working order. It had a dead dc to dc, damaged fu5 board (buttons to the right of 1/5 would not work) broken gears on the cassette carriage and a badly worn audio control head. But it has good video heads and drum which is why I decided to stiack at it.First replaced the cassette carriage and power supply, then discovered that though the tape now loaded it would not thread! This was due to the connecting bar which connects to the cassette bay floor being bent. Straightened it and problem solved. Then yesterday I replaced the fu5 board (this would be quite easy except for the two cables that do not go to ss11 as the rest do! However replaced that and all buttons work again. Then the ace was replaced (actually not too difficult) then realigned it so I now get good clear audio on both channels. It is now a fully working machine with only a split threading gear to spoil it (I didn t have a good spare to replace it with). Very, very satisfying to bring back to life a c9 I thought had had it!

It looks like nobody is able to help me here.....

I was able to locate a TV/Vcr repair man that had caps..

Now with the Sony SL-5000, Replacing all the blue sanyo caps except for the three .33 caps and the one .68 cap, due to not able to getting them. I was able to get the picture on both speeds and is beautiful. I haven't looked into fixing the Fast Forward, that rewinds instead of fast forward yet. I tried to replace the .33 caps with with .22 or .47, I could not adjust the vcr to play both BII and BIII, one would play right and the other speed would be off etc.. So I had to put the .33 caps back in.

Now with the SL-5101, Replacing the same caps as the SL-5000, did nothing as the picture still bounces around causing the v-hold and h-hold on the tv to go out of wack at times. I notice streeks of color and a bar with the picture bending at the top, and sometimes a bar at the bottom, some tapes play worse than others, Seems that BII recorded tapes have a worse picture, and BIII tapes at times will play perfect. I noticed the RV8 adjustment really does nothing and the other two next to it do absolutly nothing. On the SL-5000 I was messing with those and noticed how they control the stillness of the picture. So I'm guessing there are more caps on the SL-5101 that need to be replaced on the SS-9 board. There are black 50v caps in these vcrs, is it common for those to dry out and not work properly? If any knows what to do to fix the picture, I would greatly appreciat your help...

I was suprised the SL-5000 was easier to fix, it was in the worst shape than the SL-5101 that came to me new in box and has not one scratch on it.

I'm learning, Bad with names of what I'm doing. I did damage the leads that are under the green of the board to some caps that I was replacing, So I had to follow the leads to the next solder point and wire them togther..

I also own a SL-5000 which I just replaced the C7, C8, And a few other .1 mf caps, seeing how I only have .1 and .22 mf values right now. Once I replaced those, I adjusted the adjustment for the head speed and got a picture that is very flashy, and jittery with a little bit of noise. The color is terrible, and when I hit rewind while playing, the picture looks better. I also can't get it to play normal in both BII or BIII, its got to be one or the other. I guess this unit is a little more far gone then my SL-5101. I'm guessing they both need more caps replaced in that area. Let me know any info...Thanks...

Here's what I got (not including the VHS equipment): SL-F1UB, TT -F1UB, AC -F1UB, BCP-220 (4-battery compartment for powering the TT & SL units aswell as the camera), HVC -3000 (not 4000 as I incorrectly put in my prev. post!!!), HVR-320 (Pan/Tilt mount for the camera). It was mostly complete with instructions, some bits were missing (but these have turned up in the next lot I'm getting), and as I said, tonnes of tapes were included, I haven't counted them but there's probably between 30 to 50 tapes, some are a bit worn though!! Anyway, I bought 3 movies off ebay (AirplaneII- The sequel, Top Secret (same makers as Airplane/AirplaneII) and Earth 2 (erm, a bit boring actually!!!)), but I haven't got much else tapewise. The camera works beautifully (for it's age!!) and it does feel odd filming using such an old camera which produces the classic ghosting!!! But I can't wait to play with that camera control unit though with the B&W camera!!!

Hi, I got myself an SL-F1UB kit a couple of months back (I wanted to post about it here back then but this page wouldn't work) and I love it!!! It works well once it's warmed up and I have loooooads of tapes to use or watch (mostly opera going by the labels!!!), and I also got a HVC-4000 camera with it too, and on a lesser not I also got a VHS equivalent too, but that doesn't work very well (I wonder why??? :D ). Anyway, as I say, once the SL-F1 has warmed up it works flawlessly, but initially when I try to use it, the recording or playback is usually just interference so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what is wrong with the VCR unit? The person I bought it off has also found the rest of the bits that were with it originally (like the remote control for the Pan/Tilt thingy, the NP-1 batteries for the VCR, the camera mixing desk thing and black & white camera!!) so I'll be getting that soon to complete the lot!!! And what did I pay for it all? Well, £50 for the initial lot that I currently have and another £45 for the rest of the kit!!! A bargain in my eyes!!!

There was some discussion a while back about not being able to play tapes that were recorded on another machine. I think the recordings they're talking about are ones made on Super Beta machines. If you record in BII or BIII on a Super Beta machine and you play it back on a non- Super Beta machine you might, depending on the machine get streaks in the playback picture. If you record in BIs on your high end Super Beta and try to play it back on a non- Super Beta machine like a SL-HF-300 you get a very lousy picture that is virtually un-watchable.BIs recordings must be played back on a Super Beta ( high band) machine.ReguLAR older type BI can be played back on any BI capable machine without any picture problems. Hi, have a problem with my hf950. It won t record in colour through the av inputs - only black and white. But it will record colour through the normal aerial. Will playback colour through av. This happened on the hottest day of the year so far so am thinking its a small component failed due to excess heat. Any ideas on what the cause is and how to fix? Thanks.

Hi, just a quick question, I have just bought 20 tdk HDX-PRO 750s from a seller on ebay in the usa and will be using these in my slhf950. I would like to know if they are suitable for recording in the superbeta pro mode, or just standard superbeta? I would think these tapes were tdk s equivilant of the PRO-X from Sony, but does it have to be the Sony PRO-X tape and nothing else for superbeta pro use? In any case they are excellent tapes and produce superb picture quality but would just like to know if they are up to the job for superbeta pro use. Thanks!

Just bought a NEC VC-N70EU HiFi VCR off of Ebay. I replaced the drive belt, It needs a new idler gear as the teeth are broken. I went to replace the loading belt...And after doing that I went to plug the Vcr in and nothing. Does not power up, all of a sudden....I don't understand. I noticed wires coming from the power source with a capacitor glued to the video head, it was getting hot when the unit powered up, I wonder if that has anything to do with the unit not powering up? Does anyone know??

Sony SL-C9 frame advance fault:Does anyone have a service manual or info to hand which would tell me what to adjust for this fairly minor problem on an SL-C9: The 1/10th speed, and frame advance (including reverse) don't quite work, the picture jumps a tiny bit but doesn't move on a frame. Also the freeze frame often has a noise bar. But the 1/5th speed works just fine and without a noise bar. Clearly there is some adjustment required to change the nudge power for the very slow motion operations. Any advice most appreciated.

All other functions are 100% (now that I've swapped the PSU and repaired the usual front-loading problems).

Thanks.

Hi Noel,Ron and Craig. Thanks for your comments to my observations about tape performances. It's nice to know i gave you some food for thought and a interesting debate.Ron, yes you are right TDK and AGFA did use the twin window shell....my mistake. The Scotch tapes i still have from way, way back in the early eighties are still playing well and there may have well been a bad batch as you say Noel. One other interesting point I have still yet to see the dreaded deterioration of the recordings i've heard so much about after around 25 years old, i believe.it's interesting a lot shouting about this are the transffering companies to DVD.Say's it all don't you think?keep the interesting comments and views coming....this board just got interesting again.........Happy Beta viewing............Kevin (UK)

Hello to you all, I am still in the market for a perfect Sony 950 SLV and bitterly regret hurling my own into a metal skip at the local tip about 3 months ago. I was told it was beyond repair unless I was prepared to 'fork out' £1300 plus VAT for new heads. Reading the latest postings on the site about this machine, it would appear that something could have been done to (possibly) correct the fault with mine. A perfect C9 might be a machine I would consider.I have been on ebay and have 'met' with some delightful sellers. Some have been extremely helpful and offered unqualified assistance, some have been very guarded, when asked for a FULL description of the machine offered. I am seeking an honest merchant to whom I am prepared to pay above market value, for a machine that IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY.

Kevin,

Interesting comments you make about tapes. I bought some library type hard case Scotch L500s and they had problems with tape breakdown but admittedly after a lot of use. They used to shed oxide and block the heads. It might have been a bad batch because scotch generally had a good name. (A "3M" product) I have found the Fuji tapes to be excellent and was lucky enough to pick up a lot of "new" old stock from a TV station. I too have had the problem you describe with certain sony cassettes jamming and squeeling. Interesting stuff.

To K.Lambert.

G/day Kevin,

interesting chat on differences in tape shell's etc, Kodak were in fact not the only manufacturer to use the twin window cassette shell! Agfa and TDK also used these shell,s - TDK on for some of their super avilyn HS tapes - both the Agfa & TDK tapes I have look identical to the Kodak shell including the markings on the clear windows!

I also have some other twin window cassettes that appear to be none of the above brands and have different markings on the clear windows.

I find this type of cassette very useful when setting up machines - especially when the windows are removed it enables all sorts of tweaking! [ie tape take-up - tensions etc etc]

Good to have the chat page back - it seems more active than it's been for a long time!

regards

Ron

Hello, charlie. I found them. they are the two small ones. I don't know which one is a .1 and .22 I found caps at Studio Electronics the site where I get my replacement belt kits they have 50 volts that are .1 and .22 MF value. Will they work? I don't know much about caps, I should learn if I'm going to start to fix these vcrs....

Adam, I went out in my shop and grabbed a SL-5000 -SS-9 board and found the C-60 you were talking about. You need to go a little farther over from there. In fact go over till you see a a IC marked IC -1. An IC looks like a black centipede. The C-7 and C-8 position caps are about 1/2 inch left of that. The caps are tantilum capacitors but a normal cap should be ok.As far as the FF problem just replace the tact switch (the little switch your FF button is engaging when you press it). That going in a different direction is very common in the SL-HF 300 and 400 series but I guess the 5000 could do it to .The tact switches have a tiny little metal disk inside them that corrodes .Charlie

HiI found the worst culprit for difficulty in playing a tape even when new were the Sony L750's around the 1985 period. They changed the quality of the tape spool/ outer shell plastic to a harder material and i had quite a few when new would slow down and cause vibrations and picture disturbance.I proved this when i removed the spools and put them in another cassette shell by a different manufacturer. Also if you are using the newer front loading Sanyo's with a rubber top idler this will struggle more then the older geared type.Scotch were one of the best for performance on all counts for tapes as were Fuji. The early and latter Sonys were great but the ones made around 1985 not so.Sanyo, Maxell,TDK and BASF were all OK and the Kodak brand were the only manufacturer to make two windows ( ala VHS style) with their Beta tapes and they were fine too......................Kevin

Small problem:

I have noticed a small issue in the EDV-9000. I wanted to get some opinions before I just dig into the machine again.

The issue is:

It doesn't seem to completely erase tapes. It shows a small amount of bleedthrough or whatever from the old recording, mostly at the bottom 10% or so of the picture, representing itself mainly as shifting colors through the new recording (like you used to get in the early machines when trying to do editing, and the old video would show through partially on the portion of the tape that was between the erase head and the video head).

Can someone give me any pointers on how to correct this? The machine has flying erase heads. The video heads seem to be quite good, as if I record especially in ED, it looks as good as the original signal (haven't tried it with a DVD as yet, but soon).

TIA

To Adam,

regarding your problem with tapes not running well! - you don't mention what make or model all your vcr's are?

Anyway particularly quite a few of the Sanyo models tend to behave the way you describe when the tape load drive belt becomes weak - this causes the tape to not sit down as firmly as it should in the machine and when the spools are about evenly balanced [i.e. each spool has about the same amount of tape in them]that is when this problem is most evident.

If you remove the cover of the machine and press lightly on the cassette you should find the problem dissappears, if this is so - the remedy is to fit a new [taut] load motor belt and the problem should dissappear.

Not sure if the above applies to any Sony / Toshiba machines as any of these machines I have worked on my policy is to replace all belts anyway.

Hope the above cures your problems?

Ron

I have a question. I have about 5 working beta vcrs, and tons of pre recorded factory movies that are from the early 80s and up. I've noticed allot of the tapes will about half way into the movie, I will hear a straining noise coming from the player, sounds like friction between the tape and heads, I noticed when doing that the picture starts to get wavey and the sounds starts to sound muffled. All players do it with certain movies. If I stick my finger in the player and move the tape a tad bit the noise will stop and play perfect. Is there something in the players that I should loosen up? if not, what would be causing that? Seems to me the movies are fine, great picture when that prolem is not happening....Please let me know...

Thanks....Adam

Hello Charlie, thanks for the reply on the SL-5000....Another few questions. I opened the unit up and I counted a total of 12 light blue caps, 2 being much smaller. None of them say c7 or c8 on the board. I saw a c60 all being two digits and so on. Should I replace all the blue caps? Also will that fix the fast forward also. I'm guessing the two small caps are .1 value and the rest are .22?? The only store I know that sells capacitors is Radio Shack, I'm guessing they will have what I need...Let me know....Thanks..

Desparately needed:

Remote control for Sony EDV-9000/9500 (RMT-164)

Owner's manual for Sony EDV-9000/9500 (English version)

I just got this machine. The seller stated that it had loading/unloading problems. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out that the problem was that the worm gear for the loading mech had too much throw and would become disengaged from it's motor. I added a couple of Teflon shims and now it works perfectly. Great record and playback (ED ßeta looks fantastic).

Anyone that can help, I would sure appreciate it.
