Boby,
I don't know about the SLO1800. It's not listed in the NTSC list on Palsite but I think I heard Olive or another USA beta fan talk about it.
cheers Noel
KEVIN: There is only a finite # of Betamax left in the world...you tell me to throw mine in the skip???
Just because this creep Boby won't help me with a fix?
Do you kmow what his fix is for the LED's?.....Since you know all about Betas, and I apologize for what I said, maybe you can help me?
If you can't help me, bug off...Boby and I are developing a relationship and if it works out I may bring him out of his misery by exporting him to Great Britain.
Timmy
I ve forgotten more about the Betamax format than you will ever know matey, so don t try and make me look stupid. And for your information I have contributed to this site on and off for years. As for speaking for other people I ll do what I like. It s just an attempt to get rid of muppets like you.
Just dump your machine back in the skip you found it in
Do us all a favour and you "BUTT OUT"
Noel,
Do you happen to know about SLO 1800 ?
It's a industrial machine I supposed, could it be NTSC?
Cheers
General information regarding the SLO-1700.
I have been mistaken in my belief that these machines do not have a drop out compensator circuit. I was aligning one today and found out where that circuit/adjustment is and it works rather well.
cheers Noel
Stuart,
Regarding your question on the Sony SLF30, about the spring on the load ring. The only spring I could see at the point you describe was on the thin white plastic arm that pushes the leading tape wrap posts, a very critical part to the machines operation. The spring is wrapped around a plastic arm that swings in a pivot point on the load ring so it could not come off unless the arm is broken.
Unless you posted the machine with a tape loaded in it, that section stores directly below a metal shield when the machine does not have a tape in it. I have never seen a break of this kind before and I cant see how it would occur in the post.
Have you received pictures back of the "problem" from the person you sold it to?
It sounds very suspicious.
cheers Noel
Hello Boby
it's nice to know that you have a foul mouth if you wish to talk like that.. Very nice
We know you can use foul language.. But no need to prove it any further..
Now: Could you answer my question about LED lights. PLEASE!!!!!!
We all love you boby.. Tim
PS; TIMMY if you went to Church on Sunday or if you take your religion lesson real good then you understand that your life is written all over the Bible. GOD is watching you, even if you play beyond. Find a bright side in you, so there'll be no more dark dent.
Timmy;
Dunno 'bout any corrosion. What I knew is the LED was burned-out coz of age.(MTBF)
Make me trust you that you won't do any harm to my BETAfellas then you'll know how to make the VU-meter 'alive' easily.
We all speak decent languange and life, we don't like rough slang or any kind of piece of SHT. Tho I can speak real kind of dirty and nasty slang, I wouldn't use it.
Try to make a better world of BETAMAX for living.
IT'S ALL DEPEND ON YOURSELF, YOU TIMMY!.
DARK OR DAY IT'S YOUR CALL.
Keep your finger cross.GOD BLESSCheers.
Stevie: also known as BOBY or Batashy FROM INDONISIA , Nice try using (TIMMY) to use the filthy, foul language.
I guess in your country that OK to do..
Well anyway, back to LED'S
Boby, Stevie and Batashy:Could you answer my question about corrosion under the round insulation on the LED VU board? Am I on the right path? Your friend, Timmy
Dear Beta fans,
I have a Betamovie BMC-100 that I am attempting to repair. It does not turn on at all and I have checked the fuse. I am using the correct power adapter and I've tried inserting a cassette. Any ideas?
Thanks, everyone for the constructive criticism.
Hello Boby,
Could you answer my question about corrosion under the round insulation on the LED VU board?
Am I on the right path? Your friend, Timmy
Oh and Timmy,Boby has an e-mail address, can i suggest your try that instead of using this board to vent your frustrations (or increase your post count)If you don't gey a reply, TAKE THE HINT and try another avenue..................HAPPY EASTER Betaphiles!!........................Kevin
TimmyI am the guy who knows more about Sanyo NOT the Kevin who's just responded. So PLEASE read the member name before accusing people as such.Yes , your ranting and raving about the Sony 950 LED meter is TIRING and now pathetic. You probably won't get any response now, judging by your persistent, aggrivating attitude on this board. It's also obvious now KNOWONE here can ( or wants ) to help you.You can only blame yourself for that.Stop the repetive postings about the same subject and the DEMANDING............grow up or go away........PLEASE.................Kevin (Lambert)
Gosh, Kevin....I appreciate you chiming in on this, but really, it's none of your business. You seem to know a little bit about Sanyo and nothing about Sony HF950, so please butt out.
This is between me and Boby.
Once he answers my question (why in heaven's name won't he?) I will dissapear.
Stop speaking for him, he does the best he can with what he has in the way of English skills.
Hail to the Chat Page...Timmy
Timmy
This used to be a good, useful, informative forum site until recently......hint, hint
Boby obviously doesn t want to tell you the answer to your question - it s not difficult to understand. Sarcasm ("you are correct kevin, as always") and attitude don t get you anywhere. You obviously enjoy having disputes with people and use it to get what you want in life - NOT SO HERE!!
One last thing, EVER TRIED FINDING A SERVICE MANUAL??
This is my last word on this pathetic saga, I m fed up with reading it
As always, Kevin, you are correct.
I don't want to keep posting on this board, I realize it is annoying.
If Boby will just help me out...I'll go away.
AGAIN: What about the question I have asked you twice before BOBY? Please, I have spent days on this little LED board. I found this green corrosion. Am I in the right ballpark? Thanks again, Timmy
Timmy
Sony put green corrosion on these boards as a decorative feature......
Try scraping it off and see what happens. I (and i m sure there are many others in the same boat) am sick of hearing about your LED s. Do what every other electronics / betamax enthusiast does and work the fault out for yourself!!
Kevin
Boby,
I mentioned to help you. Thought you could get more customers to see your fine auctions.
I wasn't aware that you might have said things on this board that may be harmful to your eBay business.
Apologies again, you are not from Indonesia...you said it and that's that. Ebay lies.
What about the question I have asked you twice before? Please, I have spent days on this little LED board. I found this green corrosion. Am I in the right ballpark?
Thanks again, Timmy
P.S; no need to publish my EBAY ID so many times, some of people here known me before I joined EBAY and I did bussineses long before I have EBAY. I made friends on multiple continent, some of them don't even speak English. You've got a great tounge why don't you make use of it.
Timmy;
as I said before doesn't matter where I came from and what a heck I am. What matters here that you must know how to 'socializing' with people.
I believe that you're a good person, you must learn how to cope with.
No one would like to have a comms with you, I'm your only friend here.
You said some of us have a dramatic changes but I don't see it in yourself.
I wish I could help but there's nothing I can do for you.
Cheers.

I guess, Boby (ID on Ebay is Betashy), that eBay screwed up....not a problem.
Could you answer my question about corrosion under the round insulation on the LED VU board?
Thank you so much....sorry about that Indonesian thing that eBay stuck next to your name.
Your friend, Timmy
Colin:
I'm interested in having a look at your collection. Where are you? I'm in Brisbane. If you're not too far away, give me a call or SMS on: 07 040 373 6989. I tried e-mailing you direct, to no avail,
Cheers, Craig.
Stuart; You said 1 of the spring is missing (broken?), I guess you have to replaced it or find another similar spring. This spring could have been corroded or METAL-Fatique(one of the phenomenon of METALurgy). -----#-----
T I M M Y ; Last information.
I'm not from Indonesia.
Hello all. I need some advice on an f30 I just sold. It left me perfect but has been evidently dropped in the post and has arrived with the buyer damaged. I believe the threading ring has had a small spring drop out. This would normally in full threaded position be seen in the channel of the threading ring at about 12.05-12.10 as on a clock face looking from the top of the vcr. Question, what would happen if this spring is missing, and could this have happened in transit if the vcr was dropped? As the unit was perfect when it left me I am not willing to refund the buyer, but it was insured to the paid for value with the chosen delivery service and was very well packed..
SVHS/Beta
I think it would certainly be worth trying SVHS tape in a Beta shell. SVHS tape is not more abrasive than regular VHS or Beta tape so no harm will come of it. However in my experience (and it's rather a lot of experience!), SVHS tapes tend to cause head clogging when they get old and tired, much more so than regular VHS. It would seem that the formulation is not particularly robust.
For UK readers, I do still have a handful of brand new Beta Pro-X tapes for sale. A fiver each plus post, but just one or two per customer so that a few people get the chance.
Regards,
Colin (www.video99.co.uk)
Hi everyone. I'm a fairly new Betamax enthusiast who's been the proud owner of an SLC6 -UB since February last year. I picked the recorder and about 200 tapes with various content up through a free ad. The tracking is somewhat past it, but I've found some great stuff on the tapes (I collect old T.V idents and acommercials you see). The oldest recording I've got is an episode of "Big bands from the Dorchester" from BBC2 in April 1974 however I was thrilled to find some footage of the ITV schools countdown clock introducing Stop, look and listen from 1984. Ah the memories. Where will my Betamax collection go from here, onwards and upwards I hope.
Mark:
Thanks for that; I think you could be on to something. Will check it out again this weekend.
Cheers, Craig.
Bill,
Interesting option. Check the composition of the tapes and ensure they are not metal like SP beta tapes. It seems commonly excepted that metal tapes will chew out standard heads. I don't know if the S-VHS heads are specially made to handle more abrasive tapes.Anyway, from my knowledge of how they get the extra performance S-VHS and Super beta go about it in much the same way using extended bandwidth on the tapes.
cheers Noel
Pro-X tapes seem to be very hard to come by. My collection is precisely 1. It was sold to me very cheaply out of his own very small stock by an American former contributor to this site.
In the meantime I am transferring S-VHS tapes to DVD and generating blank high quality tapes, all TDK and mostly used only once. I'd like comments on whether or not it would be worth the fiddly hassle of winding S-VHS tape into Beta shells for use in my 950. Obviously the better the tape the better the recording, but is Pro-X just very high quality tape or is there somespecific and crucial difference between it and regular Beta which would make it pointless to wind S-VHS tape on to Beta?
Regards to everyone, Bill
David,
You need an expert to check it. It is not normal for the heads to go suddenly unless they have been damaged. Sounds more like something else. A head tester will indicate the wear on the heads. An oscilloscope is needed to heck the tracking and alignment so not much more you can do. The back tension needs to be about 35gm (need a special tape to test it. If the sound level did not vary, my guess is the tension is right but the alignment is off because increased tension affects the way the tape wraps around the head as well as the tape gap so it might have pulled the tape slighlty higher or lower. I suppose that you appreciate it is all about aligning the heads with the previously recorded track and having the minimum gap heads to tape but for minimum head wear.
I would still replace the caps- common fault.
cheers Noel
Kevin - many thanks - it'll come in handy.
Hi Noel.
I've had a good look at the heads (through the handy enlarged hole at the back of the head) and I can't see anything wrong. Compared it to a couple of other video heads (albeit VHS ones) and they look similar. The two heads track at exactly the same height as far as I can see, and there's no obvious damage.Tried the business card clean, and although there was a small mark on the card afterwards, the video is still no better.
One odd little effect though was that if I artificially increase the tape tension on the head while a tape is being played, the snow does reduce. (found by having a gentle poke and prod at the tape guides while a tape was playing) Is this indicative of worn heads? and if so, how hard are they to change, really?
Any other test or check I can do before I try to find someone who can fix it?
Thanks in advance.
Gavin:There is currently a owners manual for that model on E-Bay for 99p.I have also sent you the service manual for that model (in tif NOT PDF) as there currently is'nt one in PDF for that mdel but most other Sanyo Beta's.(i mistook your message as most want the service manual)I may have one for the Sanyo 5000-11 in PDF, i'll have a look..................Kevin
Ya, I wonder where on earth Olive is ?
......
David,
At worst case it sounds like a damaged video head chip. Check the actual heads using a magnifying glass to see they have not been broken or pushed up or down. Their strength is only in the direction they spin and they are fragile to any up and down movement during a manual clean. If they look OK then there might be a sticky surface deposit that wont shift by normal cleaning especially a cleaning tape. Get a paper surface business card. These have a clean strong surface coating of cellulose. Press it against the side of the drum and wrap it around the drum so that it covers a length of the gap the heads spin in but be careful not to move it up or down. Spin the head assembly through about 10 rotations using the disc at the top of the drum assembly.
Now try the machine again and see how you go.
There can be a noise problem caused by a faulty power supply capacitor. Replacing the smaller electrolytic capacitors in the power supply cant hurt. Most times when the capacitors fail it affects the tuner also but not always.
cheers Noel
Anyone have a link to a pdf owners manual for a Sanyo VTC5000? Thanks.
Hi all.
I have a Sony C40 Beta, which I have owned for many years, and has given great service. Just recently I managed to fix a problem with a siezed drive wheel which was jamming the load motor. All good there.
The problem I have now is exessive snow and some patterning on the picture during playback. When simply passing a video signal through the machine it's fine. I've tried numerous known-good tapes, and they all show this heavy snow and rough picture. Recording and then playing back shows even worse snow.
I've tried cleaning the heads with headcleaner fluid, but no difference. This fault appears to have come on suddenly rather than progressively which is a bit odd. Now, although I'm a mechanical engineer, I'm no electronics engineer so I'm a bit lost now. I'd appreciate any advice that anyone may have, and possibly anyone who would be recommended to take the machine to. I'm based in the south, and travel a fair bit around most of the south of the UK.
Thanks in advance.
To the Beta diehards. Toshiba models V31 and V33.
Well, it took while but I worked out the alignment differences with the Toshiba when you change the video heads. Three areas to be careful with really.
1. You need to centre the heads (like for Sony SLC7 machines and earlier SONY) using a dial guage. (excentricity adjustment I think it is called)2. Ensure the upper drum is properly aligned over the lower drum when you put it back and not lose the thin brass shims used to originally pack it out.3. Reset the mechanical and electrical tracking and also the A/B and B/A head switch points.
The service manual is not well written in regard to item 3 so its a bit of hit and miss at first.
cheers Noel
Hi,ev eryone, except timmy,I am sekking up and moving into a reirement village,so I have 2 non working beta machiones and a zillion Beta movies to dump somewhere, any suggestions I am in qld australia
Craig, you may have the box set on rgb out on the scart you are using from it to your betamax, if you can change it to composite in the menu. If it has two scarts on it make sure you are not using the tv out as this may default to RGB. The betas only have composite in.
I recently bought a standard definition set top box complete with very scant on information instruction manual, and can get my Betas to play through it, but cannot record the digital picture through the rotten thing. Anyone know how I can record through it, as I too still use my HF 100 & 950 for recording; but only for movies and music videos I intend to keep. For time shifting and recording stuff I'll miss while I'm out, I use my JVC S-VHS to prolong head- life on the Betas. Also still fire up the old Sony 5630 U-matic for studio quality recordings and play- back of old tapes.
Timmy: are you THE doctor; or do you NEED a doctor?? Please, get another hobby, or better still, stop posting utter cr*p on this site; it's for helping each other, not slagging off some of the most helpful contributors!
p.s: What happened to Olive?
Tim - this one will do. It is a lead for a stereo machine like the 950 and the leads will be marked in and out to avoid confusion. But if you have a stereo tv, you will have sound only from one side purely as the f30 is a MONO machine. If you are using a mono tv, the fact it is a stereo lead is irrelevant.http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=4702&doy=14m3
Tim, you need a bnc video and phono audio to scart socket lead. Can be obtained from maplins.
Whoops! Sorry, mistyped my e-mail address. It's [email protected] Thanks.
Hi, I just found these pages and would welcome some advice. I was just given 2 SL-F30 machines and around 200 tapes, mostly of opera and movies from UK TV.
I'm really looking forward to figuring out what I've got - they're not all labelled - but I'm having trouble with the basic hookup!!Unfortunately there were no cables (or remotes) and I don't recognise the connections on the back. What do I need to connect up to my TV? (which has Scart connection). What connects to what? I guess I can buy cables from Maplin?
Some VERY BASIC help please. Many thanks.Tim
Colin,
OK, strange one that. Good luck with fixing that problem, I have never seen it on any of the machines I have serviced.
On another note, does anyone have experience with tape path alignment of the Toshiba V33 machines after replacing the video head. Thay seem to present more problems than any other machine I have worked with.
cheers Noel
Noel re HF100 audio fault:
I really meant what I said (or tried to say): Hifi audio is recorded only when using the audio-only feature of the machine. When recording with a picture, ie as normal, there is no hifi track, just the linear one.
Head wear seems unlikely (though just possible) since it works in audio-only, and playback hifi is rock solid.
Hifi is done with depth multiplexing of course, and I suspect that for some reason it is overwriting the hifi deep audio with the video information.
Regards,
Colin

Stuart & Kevin,
You are not alone in still USING beta, I am running two SLHF950s, and two VHS Sony edit decks (777 & 787) for free to air recording in the cinema and house plus an SLO1700 (for cable TV copies) because it does all stereo sound and has very good VU meters for easy level setup.
cheers Noel
Stuart:You're not alone there either , i still use it to record too, as well as VHS,SVHS and for mormal playback the same as mentioned and DVD.My 2 M40 's i mainly use for recording on Beta due to the far superior Hi-Fi sound..........................Kevin
I must be one of the few who is still using beta for recording lol! I use mainly to record on demand programmes from cable tv which are copy protected with macrovision, which beta does not recognize:)
Colin,
That audio problem with the SLHF100, are you sure you didn't mean when recording it records HiFi but does not lay down a normal audio track?
That is the usual fault and it is because of the failure of the bias transformer which also supplies the erase head. So the previous audio track remains in the "normal" mode but the HiFi is OK. There is some effect on the picture with some remaining signal from any previously recorded video affecting the new recording especially at the start and noting darker video sync showing through. If it is a HIFi record problem then the heads might be worn or the machine otherwise poorly aligned in the HiFi section.
Stuart was also pointing out that SLF30s are a source for replacement bias transformers for the SLHF950 as they use the same part.
cheers Noel
Stuart
T331 only got a mention because I was trying to do a thousand things at once and messed up! It is of course the bias oscillator coil for the audio, and has no bearing on video signals. This part also fails in the C40, which is a right pain, since being linear stereo it has an extra winding and so can't be swapped with one from say a scrap C20. My C40 therefore languishes unable to record.
I'm guessing the HF950 has no linear stereo capability, only Hifi like the HF100, so the coil shouldn't be built for two audio channels. Therefore, I'm guessing, the 950 coil could be replaced with one from a scrap C20 or similar.
While we are on the subject of audio faults, anyone had this: HF100 plays in hifi stereo perfectly. It will record in audio-only mode (pretty pointless feature) also in hifi stereo. But when asked to record normal video, there is no hifi audio track.
Now not many of us are really using Beta decks for recording any more, but it would be nice to solve this. If I do want to record in Beta HiFi to make up a test tape for example, I have to use my Sanyo VTC-M40. This machine still works a treat with good tapes, but worn tapes look a bit grainy on it.
Cheers all
Colin

Hello Betafellas,
I got this HF950 that does not produce color scheme (B&W), I'll be happy to know any kind of suggestion on this.
Many thanks in advanced.

I GUESS YOU ALL HAVE HAD A TASTE OF THE RIP OFF
FOUND another GEM FROM A BACK PAGE OF THE PALSITE ARCHIVES. This is a VERY small part of a long back and forth chat. ENJOY" Fritz: I have 3 HF950 and looking to get one good unit out of the 3. any Suggestions? NOEL: Hello my friend FRITZ, email me and I will make you the best Betamax you ever had. I cant discuss the details her on the Pal Site. There are so many smams, we need to keep this fix quiet. understand my good pal Fritz. Ill take real , real good care of you. Also my dear FRITZ, You may have to spend a few pounds UP FRONT to get started.
A MONTH LATER and 10 email back and forth later........ FRITZ: Noel where are you? NOEL WHERE ARE YOU ?? ever since I dropped off the 3 Betamax and paid you for repairs, you never called me back? NOEL, please either fix my machines, give me my pounds back or contact me. BOBY: We haven't heard a word from NOEL, I think he went on a vacation, Quite odd because he said that he had no money to go. Noticed that he auctioned 3 HF950 on eBay for a bundle. Noel is a lucky chap. Cheers By the way, I might have a way to repair the LED's will keep the board informed.
I've just acquired a Sony SL-T30 ME. It is cosmetically excellent, however there appears to be a couple of problems with it. Upon ejecting a tape it stays laced up. It can be relatively easily removed, however the tape obviously suffers some undesirable damage. I've done a few tests and it seems that if the tape is rewound for a few seconds prior to ejecting it will unlace correctly. Is this a known issue and is there a fix (perhaps like the Sanyo VTC5000 mod)? There also seems to be some interference on the video during playback - almost like the channel isn't completely tuned in correctly. I have so far only tested with one NTSC tape because of the lacing issue I don't want to damage others. Is this a known issue? Finally does anyone have a link to a service manual for this model? Thanks in advance.
I did buy a parts at my first time membership on I'B. saying that the merchant on vacation and I'll have to wait a while. send him $ already buy no reply at all after 2 weeks, bad English spoken. Guess I have to open case on PP then I got my $$ back.
Sht sometimes happens everywhere.
Best,Boby.
Colin, not an answer but strange you should mention t331..this is the transformer located in the can for the full erase head on the top board? This is if we are talking of the same part, the transformer also used in the hf950 (the infamous t901)As a side question I am curious as to why this has a failure tendancy in the 950 but not the f30. .??
F30 Adjustments (correction)
Sorry I wrote that down wrong. What is the purpose of RV503? Some clockwise adjustment of this seems to help.
Thanks.
Colin
F30 adjustments:Or, to put it another way, what is the purpose of T331 which looks the only promising adjustment. (Yes, some are labeled.)
Sony SL-F30:
Does someone have an SL-F30 service manual they could look something up for me?
I'm getting the old black streaks to the right of bright white transitions. "Heads" I hear you say. But no, I've just installed brand new Sony original heads. The problem only occurs on very worn tapes, good tapes play well.
Now I do know that on some machines there is an adjustment for FM bandwidth, where you basically trade off detail against the risk of these black streaks. Can anyone locate such an adjustment on the F30? What doesn't help is that the presets on this machine are only numbered, not described as are those on other Sony models.
Thanks for any help, please also copy me at [email protected]

Stuart,
As you have his address, you might suggest to him that you have "a friend" go around and pick up the unit to post to you instead because he is so busy. He would however then also have to give you the 16 pounds postage fee back. Worth giving him the option!!!!!
cheers Noel
Hi Stu: Yes i know exactly what that feels like.I was 'ripped off' on E-Bay by 2 guys one in Florida US and the other in Canada For $4000 and $537 repectively and there was basically NOTHING i could do about it as i paid by IMO.Watching that girl on that Youtube clip makes your blood boil. She to have the same done in return. It beggars belief....!!!!!!!!That is the trouble when sending out cheques for things off people you don't really know.It IS a risk.I would stay patient a while longer as some do come through in the end.Give it some more time and try ( even though it is hard) to be positive about it.................................Kevin
Looking at daves ebay youtube vid, and onto the subject of being ripped off, I responded to Craigs post on february 3rd (now in the archives which I just found). I sent him a cheque for £66 for a c9 requiring new heads. He supplied pics as I requested, and so I sent the cheque. (50 for the c9 plus 16 postage) Cheque was cashed on feb 12th. Since then I have had but one call from him (before cheque was cashed) and one email about 2 weeks ago saying he had issues slowing things down. Nothing else. All my emails have been ignored and I have not recieved my c9. I have kept all emails including his address and phone numbers. What do others think as I am getting pissed off and angry to say the least.
just wondering, what happens if you want to view chat page comments after they drop off the bottom? Is there an archive section, as if so I cannot find it. Thanks.
Interesting indeed dave. People who do this sort of thing should need to be shot...
Noel:I'm glad you found that interesting.Think of it as a thankyou for the info on the remote control rubber contact mod you gave some time back :)...............Kevin

Hi, does any one have a service manual for sony sl-f25ub i need to know all the connections and also the power supply sectionthanks
Kevin,
That is an interesting little gem about the 5300/5400 model.
cheers Noel
Stevie:I'd try visionaids.co.uk,they are more likely to have what you want.As for alignment NO,not with belts or motor. The only thing you should take note of is if you do get a new reel drive motor the pulley will need moving from the old to the new.Take note of how far up it is on the motor shaft before removing it and also a very small allen key (about 1/16 or 1/15 ) will be needed.Keep the pulley groove towards the end of the motor shaft. Also with this model IF the mechanical counters very small belt is broken or streched, it will NOT allow any of the decks modes to function, as this is what the microprossesor reads to substantiate the reels are turning.Call it a safety thing.Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK..................Kevin
Thanks Kevin. I see Grandata has the parts you mention. Is it just a case of unscrew, remove then fit new parts? Or do they need aligned?

Hi Stevie:The nearest model to that i have overhauled was the Sanyo 5300 ( regularly service and overhaul all the later Sanyo modlels).I believe the 5400 adds audio dub. The problems with this 5300 were no playback picture and tape chewing on eject.I removed all the belts and cleaned them ( as surprisingly for a model that old they were all in very good condition)and i gently lubed the reel drive motor and cleaned the heads( as this is a early Sanyo Beta design it stays laced up in ALL modes). It played back /recorded and performed all other modes smoth and fsast after that with NO issues. If you have used the dreaded head cleaner so many times it could indeed be responsible for worn heads, if that indeed is the case? AVOID those nasty cleaning tapes altogether and ONLY use good quality tapes in any machine. You should never need the heads cleaned then.I would'nt think the capstan motor would be responsible for no FF and REW as it is'nt engaged then.Belt's and reel drive motor i would look at first.I hav'nt the service manual for that model ( i do for all the later machines) but they do come up quite frequently on E-Bay.Keep your eyes peeled..............Hope this helps.............Kevin

Fritz: I have 3 HF950 and looking to get one good unit out of the 3. any Suggestions?
NOEL: Hello my friend FRITZ, email me and I will make you the best Betamax you ever had. I cant discuss the details her on the Pal Site.
Also You may have to spend a few pounds UP FRONT to get started.
A MONTH LATER
FRITZ: Noel where are you? ever since I dropped off the 3 Betamax and paid you for repairs, you never called me back?
BOBY: We haven't heard a word from NOEL, I think he went on a vacation, Quite odd because he said that he had no money to go. Noticed that he auctioned 3 HF950 on eBay for a bundle. Noel is a lucky chap
Cheers
just tested the 5400. It lights up, clock flashes, accepts a tape, ejects a tape but wont play, ff or rw. I remember last using this, a head cleaner had to be used very regularly. So obviously new heads but is this a new motor, capstan motor, pinch roller?

TOMMY said :.... Hello NOEL, I know you help people on this page fix the Betamax free and I need a suggestion. I own a old 5000 that needs work. My brother told me that I have sunk much to much money in this Betamax and that a friend of his has a almost brand new one. Any suggestions NOEL:?
NOEL said:.... Regarding the Sanyo VTC 5000, that was a fine suggestions from your brother. Before you do anything, I need to talk to you, its hard to explain on this Pal site. Email me and we will discuss your situation. I will take real good care of you .

No response from NOEL and never heard from poor old Tommy again.
Kevin,
Thanks for that. I was just wondering if it was a common problem with the model.
cheers Noel

I found out that this machine does not playback BI tapes, and only records in BIII mode. The speed switch is not on this unit. Also I noticed the circuitry for the BI speed is all not on SS-9 board. Any unit excisting today of the 5000 series and clones needs all of the blue Sanyo capacitors replaced to play correctly. The problem with this unit, after replacing all the blue sanyo caps and belts, still does not play corretly in one speed. I have to adjust for one or the other. I beleive the tape plays the same speed in both BII And BIII tapes, I'm thinking maybe the sensor that detects tape speeds does not work. I don't know where that sensor is located in the tape transport...anyone that can help me, it will be appreciated...Thanks...
Adam
Hi Noel:Well that issue is a first for me with that model and i've never heard or come across that issue on that model before.I would go the electrolytic capacitor route as these DO commonly fail if used exstensively over long periods of time as we both know :)Maybe these power issues arise as Australia is a lot warmer than over here in the UK.Maybe they are less tolerant to that.Good luck....................Kevin
Boby , I rather just have 5 people I know bid on your item and leave you the feed back you deserve.

Kevin,
Do you know if there was a design fix or modification for the VTCM40? I have a few and they seem to suffer from failure of the regulator IC. I guess the stereo unit is heavier on power. I don't have a service manual for this unit but it might be just an issue with aging electrolytics and the design margin for heat failure is less.
cheers Noel
Kevin,
I understand and agree. I am not letting "Timmy" limit my actions or hobby.

Noel:I don't think you have any need to justify yourself here.I think most here love the Beta format or still use it and want the best for their machines be it advice or repairs.Unfortuntaley with any board you always get the patronising and insulting idiot who has nothing better to do with their time. They seem to get off on trying to instigate comments and replys from genuine members , for their insulting, insinuating and derogatory questions and comments. They do succeed when you give them YOUR TIME and responses they so desperatley need to their petty remarks and comments to get on a 'high' or increase their posting total.("congratulations Timmy for having the highest amount of idiotic posts"! and if you find THAT patronising now you know how most of us feel)The best advice is to IGNORE and maybe they will go back to their own DARK DEN..........................Kevin
Timmy,
People can see that you are making this stuff up as you go, trying to add to what little importance you think you have. You are a coward who is made brave by hiding behind the secrecy of the internet.
I don't have a shop, I don't know a Tommy and I have never said "I will take real good care of you". (That sounds so patronising) If I have fixed a machine for someone it has a 3 month guarantee because they are over 20yr old and other things can break and - oh yeh, I am in Australia. People know who I am and were I am. What about you? Feel free to take your medication now.
cheers Noel
Hi TIMMY,
We're bunch of oldies here, do nothing but BETAMAX. You got a great life out there so get it.
Why bother mingled with us old-rusty people. WhY OH why TIMMY
Anyone know of any repair centers in or around the Glasgow (UK) area? I have a Sony SL-C6UB and a Sanyo (dunno the model, blue clock, top loader) both need attention. Are they fairly straight forward to repairing? Could a newbie have a go?
Stevie
Adam, Your Zenith isn't quite the same as a Sony SL5000. Yours is a top loader and the 5000 is a front loader although most of the working inards are the same. The BII and BIII switch should be on the back left and is marked II an III record plus PB BI ( playback BI ).
Charlie
I agree with you STUART, but things have changed and I only posted that old message to show that NOEL has stop that nonsence.
So STUART things are getting better and please continue to post.
Thanks for your comment and we all feel the same.
CHEERS
I realise now why some people dont post here or offer help..there is always a fly in the soup isnt there.

Maggie: I have responded to your queries via your e-mail address.
Timmy:I don't know if you lack attention in any way, but most on this site have been polite and patient with you. Your comments are now not only insulting again but bordering on(if not VERY) irritating. Hav'nt you learned being sarcastic and demeaning will get you NOTHING.!!!!!!! Maybe these messages are just to give you kicks? I will ignore your requests/posts as they are repetitive and sarcastic, i suggest most here do the same. Stuart,
I have used "oxide" betacam tapes with much success though I don't know if their formulation is equivalent to the pro-x tapes. Strangely enough I have not had much success with used prox tapes. It may be that they have been used a lot or it could be that they deteriate quicker. That is my experience with them. Andy,
Let me know if the fix I suggested regards the gears works for you.
Timmy,
Get a life!
cheers Noel
NOEL, now that you turned over a new leaf, you are getting more questions about the old Betamax's that I have seen in some time.
ALSO NOEL for the 1st time actually said he couldnt fix an item.. Never saw that before. He would try to get the person to email him off this page to help him.$$$$$ Money is not always the isssue and I was happy to see <<<< NOEL >>>> answer questions with a clean and to the point answer. Not the old type of answer that led people to >> NOEL'S << web site for a (large fix it price) or to email him personally. The horror stories (Please see back pages of this site for the poor slobs that were taken)
Hopefully the horrors of the past are over and we can start to clean up this Dark Den
