Does anyone enter their real email address on this site before posting? Another pointless formality. Do the regulators of this site act on any suggestions or indeed read any of these posts? This is after all UK PALsite, it's a pity it has been ruined by what appears to be posts from overseas.

Now for my question:I recently was given a PAL SL-HF950. Everything operates fine, just one glitch. The VU meter has missing green and red LED'S. Boby once said on this board that he had a fix for it and would shortly make known what the repair was.I realize it is complex and hard to put into words. Would it be possibleto give a brief overview of just what goes wrong and a sketchy word ortwo on what to do? Thanks so much,Best regards, ED
PS: Hope I tackled this OK. I'm trying to comply with the rules andregulations here. If I have asked improperly for help, please, oneof you kind folks tell me where I went wrong.

Yes, I think I php board would be much better. Having to register and confirm a valid email address and only allow registered members to post would kill the spammers like timmy. If someone has a genuine issue registering wont be a problem for them. Just my humble opinion :)
If you had to sign in before posting you wouldn't get all this crap. This site needs moderating and the left to right scrolling needs attending aswell.
Hmmmmm. Interesting to note someone writing in capitals. Again?
Hi all, many thanks Noel. You have been a big help to me in the past with repairing c9s, f30s and also 950s. Now is time for me to offer parts for anyone who may require parts for a sony slf30 ub. I am breaking one for parts. The cover is sold, front panel is smashed and it wont play or perform any tape transport but the parts I am able to retrieve in good order are the tuner board, power supply and loading mechanism amongst others. Note the tuner board is missing its bias oscilator transformer as I have kept this as a spare for my hf950s. The ace and complete head drum could also be retrieved but as the unit wont play its unknown if the video heads are good, but I see no physical damage to them. Any interest please reply here. UK ONLY Thankyou!
Stuart,
No problems. Knowledge such as this is best shared, The world is a big place and without such fixes quite a few beta machines might not see service again for no good reason. I use metholated spirits or at least raw alcohol as a general cleaned of parts but when it came to restoring the pinch rollers that was not enough in some cases.
cheers Noel

Hi Noel, Thanks for your tips on cleaning pinch rollers, I have quite a few spares now taken from scrap machines. I have found that cleaning the oxide off with methylated spirit works a treat followed by a final soaking in washing up liquid. Also oxide builds up on the capstan shaft itself and stronger solvent can safely be used to remove this more quickly. (mek or acetone shifts it very rapidly but it will melt any plastic it comes into contact with so be careful)

Dear Betafellas;
I've been in this site for about 6 years. Sold beta parts worldwide by placing ads on E Bay.My prices is very low and far beyond Market real price. I'm glad that buyers are satisfied with their items.I'd posted Betamax Head cleaning methods last year on my Ebay review and guides, and you all guys/gals/folks can have a peek if you're interested in. I also did post that guides on this site last time.
I also gave 1 to 1 replacemnt guarantee to my friends in GB on buying specific items.
Hope this post will be helpful to betafans worldwide. Thanks for all your appreciation.
My deepest apologize if there's something that I've said inappropiriate, there no single bad intention other than just my second nature limitation.

General Information on something that has worked for me.
Capstan rollers are becoming hard to get for most beta machines and are very expensive.
A tip for those wanting to try and restore a capstan roller in a VCR.
The rubber rollers become hard on the surface and can even get a build up of tape or other deposits on them. Assuming the top and bottom bearings of the holder have not collapsed or worn too much and that the rubber is not stone hard or has large cracks or holes in it, the surface may be able to be restored.
Remove the roller assembly from the machine.
THE SOFT TOUCH METHOD
1/ Smear undiluted detergent onto the surface of the roller but try to avoid the sides (ends) of the roller to keep it out of the bearings.2/ Work it into the surface with your finger nail or a hard edged surface like the back of a knife and make sure the the roller surface has an even coat.3/ Sit the holder down on its back (or whatever works if it's not a late model SONY capstan roller assembly) and allow it to soak into the rubber for 10 minute or so.4/ Use a damp cloth or rag to remove the detergent and as much rubbish from the rollers surface as you can. The use a dry rag to rub the surface up to a dull finish.
refit the assembly to the machine.
THE HEAVY HANDED METHOD (Wear suitable clothing and glasses this could get messy)
Get a Dremel super tool or similar with a fine grade stone grinding wheel of approx 8mm to 10mm diameter. Run the tool at half to two thirds speed and while holding the capstan rollers metal mount between your thumb and index finger with the side of the rubber roller (capstan pin side when fitted) most exposed facing up. (I have assumed it is a roller from a late model SONY. Other model holders may have to be held differently)
TAKING GREAT CARE NOT TO TOUCH YOUR FINGERS apply the tool gently to the edge of the capstan roller at a 45 degree angle to the surface so that tool imparts spins to the roller up to a very fast speed and move the grinding stone across the surface slowly and evenly to the other edge keeping the pressure and motion constant until you get right to the other edge and then lift. Check that the resulting "wear" to the surface is even and has the right effect of roughening up and cleaning the capstan rollers rubber surface.
Repeat the procedure until you are satisfied that the roller surface is even, clean and grips reasonably like fresh rubber. Do not take so much rubber off the roller that it significantly loses its diameter and cannot press onto the capstan when refitted.
I HAVE DEVELOPED THESE METHODS OVER TIME AND THEY ARE GIVEN TO YOU WITH ALL CARE AND NO RESPONSIBILITY.
DOCTOR, TIMMY, ED, TWIT, WHATEVER, time you gave a USEFUL CONTRIBUTION to the BETA HOBBY.
To the REAL beta enthusiasts - enjoy, but take care. Cheers Noel

Thats right bobby as Noel said dont waste your time.
The damage to me and my family is done as Noel has said,
Noel should spend more time trapping poor slobs into his website to rob their pockets and You Boby from the pits of the world are selling things that god only know where you got them.
Noel I knew was a scammer , but Boby, you turned into a typical denizen of the turd (third) world.
Boby, why is it when you are asking a question that you already know the answer to, your english suddenly becomes very good and understandable? You type like a Rhoadea Scholar.
When you are caught in your filthy lies, you become a jabbering muslim monkey.
Boby,

of course by your guide on that privately...thanks. (sorry folks for subsequent posts)

Dear Noel,

Noel, I had a sick feeling that you are the one or are involved with placing the city where I and my family reside published on this webpage.
All because I asked about a VU meter, first politely and then with some anger when I was met with sarcasm and then filthy language.
To have you and I believe, Boby threaten me in this manner is reprehensible.
Let's hope I am not physically damaged because of your vitriole.
As a show of good faith, rather than reveal your website Noel, where you make all your money there and on this Palsite sucking people in to your seemingly helpful demeanor, why don't you give your city and street address for all to view? You have nothing to hide behind, right?
This is for every potential poster...IF YOU POST A QUESTION AND IT IS NOT TO THESE FOLKS LIKING, DO NOT BE SURPRISED IF THEY ATTACK YOU PERSONALLY AND EVENTUALLY POST THE CITY WHERE YOU LIVE. Just a word to the wise.
For general information,
My website is betaheaven.com and I have never made any secret of where I live. I don't think anyone who does the right thing would have a problem with people knowing where they live - would they? Hmmmmmm, unless they were hiding behind the internet!

Aha 1 step ahead to your neck...
Speaking of HF950. ....no, I guess I better not.
Mark,
I wondered about that. Superbeta is really related to the changed conversion process which uses a greater bandwidth on the tape which is a function of the electrical circuitry surrounding the heads. I am not sure that the heads themselves are really that different. Maybe someone in the design side of things can advise. From my point of view, it is better to have the normal functionality of a HF950 than none at all.
cheers Noel
Noel - Re HF950. What is the position regarding recording/playback in super beta modes using these heads?
Boby,
The very last comment about the red post being near the number 1 was meant to make sure that they have not installed the head assembly 180 degrees from where it is supposed to be.
cheers Noel
Boby,
The way I have explained it will make sense to someone who has the head and is actually fitting it. The instructions that come with the head dont tell you the differences.
cheers Noel
PS; if I have a good mHenry Heads then I should saves it for good and use HF150 's instead, wouldn't you say so Noel?
Noel,
I believe that it works as so many expert says to, but I forget that I can get X1 and X9.
quote "There are now only two wires where there were three. When resoldering the video heads to the centre round pickup circuit board, connect the black wires to the second pad from the right and the other wire to the right most pad. The large red plastic standoff for the HiFi head connection should be near the number 1."
That'll confusing for most people.
Regards,Boby.
General information.
For the HF950 owners with machines that have worn out heads.
I have just installed my first set of SLHF150 heads (yes the ones Boby sells for $50US) in an SLHF950 and other than losing the slow motion features it works fine. Actually, you still get x1 and x9 forward and reverse so that's handy for editing. The only thing you have to pay attention to are the differences in the video head connections. There are now only two wires where there were three. When resoldering the video heads to the centre round pickup circuit board, connect the black wires to the second pad from the right and the other wire to the right most pad. The large red plastic standoff for the HiFi head connection should be near the number 1.
regards Noel
David, re SL-C40: I had this problem once, it was a defective delay line (long plastic object) on the video processing PCB on the right hand side of the machine, underneath the tuner pcb. But that may have been a one-off defect.
If you can test your heads first, that would be a good start. They may have been damaged of "fallen off a cliff" in terms of performance, which can happen.
Regards,
Colin

Yes that is logically the start point. I have not done it myself but I was talking to someone who has and I saved him a heap of used beta tapes (shells) for next time I see him.

Don't have your mates bid on it and leave neg. feedback..that would be horrid.

Hi Noel,
Many thanks for the detailed instructions. I might even be able to do it. Can you just clarify one thing - am I reading it correctly that the starting position has the Beta tape fully wound on its playing spool and the VHS fully wound on to its takeup spool?
All the best, Bill
You're welcome and don't hesitate if you need further assistance.
Best,Boby.
Thanks Boby & Noel. I've ordered the converter from the ebay seller you sent Boby. I'll be back on here if I'm still stuck or have any other queries. Thanks again.
Bill,
The best way to "re-load" a beta shell I was told, is to make a jig that holds both tapes with their flaps held open, facing each other and upside down so that you can drive their spools with a drill or similar. You need to jam the tape reel lock of the VHS open with something. You cut beta tape at the leader and the VHS tape near its end. Splice (tape) the end of the beta tape that goes to the full spool, to the end of the tape on the VHS's empty spool and wind all the "old" beta tape onto the empty VHS spool. Then cut the beta tape off at the other end leader and splice the new VHS tape from the VHS cassette to the appropriate leader so it is has the right face surface out and fill that empty beta spool. The tape will more than fill the beta reel because there is more tape in a VHS cassette so stop winding the tape on when the spool has just about reached its maximum capacity. Then splice the other end of that tape to the leader of the other beta spool. If both cassettes ware held on a clear base such as perspex then you could easily view when the Beta spool is full at the end.
cheers Noel
Thanks to all for your kind approval, I hope I may have made some contribution towards solving the problem.
Colin99,
I think I will try winding one S-VHS tape into a Beta shell as an experiment. I don't look forward to it as there are so many bits and pieces, tiny but crucial springs ready to fly off in all directions etc. I'm very good at making important small bits and pieces fly off in all directions! If the results are worthwhile I will of course post a report. The only thing is - as a good Scottish skinflint it will disturb me to have to generate shells by throwing away the original tape. Can anyone suggest a use for it?
Colin, if I'm not too late, can you put me down for two of your Pro-X tapes? Please mail me with the postal cost and your address and I'll send a cheque.
Regards, Bill
addtional post fo Alison;
You can count on that BNC converter, I'd used the gold plated one years ago.The converter definately for your DVD's supplied RCA cables, no doubt about it. Simply plug the yellow-video jack into the BNC-converter then you're ready to work.
Cheers,Boby.
Bill,
I totally agree with your email above and that is why I ignore him and his lies now and have said to Boby to do the same. Unfortunately some people believe you can get "up" in the world by putting other people "down". I believe the in the old adage do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Actions such as his generally come home to roost one day. I doubt he has many "friends" in reality to do his bid and call on eBay as he suggests. Anyway - a couple of shortest emails to hit right on the mark!
cheers Noel
Alison,
I hope Boby's link helped. You are right the beta video has no yellow colour coding, just BNC connections marked IN and OUT but I mentioned the yellow because of the colour conventions used on typical RCA connection leads. Also on typical leads sometimes the left channel audio connectors are white instead of black but the right channel is always coded red.
cheers Noel
Charlie,
Interesting information about sulphur corrosion to the switches. I have not pulled these switches apart to repair them because of the time and effort as they seem to have mechanically collapsed and I had enough good ones left to solve the problem the way I suggested to Bill.
cheers Noel
Hi everyone, I think the switches that Noel and the others are talking about are the tactile (tact) switches used for the function controls. Here in the states in areas that have sulfur water wells as there water supply the failure of these switches is very common. The sulfur in the air gets into these swithes and corrodes them all up. The result is function buttons that no longer work or in the case of a SL-HF-300 or 400 (NTSC)a totally different response from what the button is supposed to control. The most common result is the unit will go into rewind when the Fast Forward button is pressed or eject the tape when play is pressed.I usually replace all the major tacts if this starts to happen because it won't be long before more fail. The switches are around 20 cents apiece here in the states and are very easy to replace. I've tried and suceeded in fixing them on occasion but it's kind of a pain in the neck to superglue them back together so I keep new ones on hand .Removing them and soaking the whole switch in contact cleaner for a few minutes will help restore them also. Charlie
Alison
this is the simplest way of connecting that 'yellow RCA cable' ;

Bill;
I greatly appreciate your finest advice. The best post I've ever seen.
Kindly regards, Boby.
Hi Bill:Well put too, indeed your observations and remarks mirror my own.
Alison:Try cpc.co.uk they will definetley have all you'll ever need and cheaper too...................Kevin
Thanks Noel. I thought of trying this but there isn't a yellow video output on the SLC9. I presume the BNC to RCA adaptors are easy to get hold of at Maplins or similar places?
To all colleagues on the site,
I share your anger, but the only way to get rid of the offender is to ignore him ABSOLUTELY, NOT to rise to the bait and respond to him. Sooner or later he WILL go away. Some people are congenitally unable to express themselves in any positive way and in any case have nothing to express. All they can do to gain attention is to attempt to disrupt the activities of others. It's the same impulse which gives rise to vandalism, when those who cannot otherwise communicate seek to get themseves noticed by destroying the property of others.
As long as anyone reacts in any way to his pointless and insulting drivel, he will feel gratification and continue. If he is ignored completely, that gratification will wither away and eventually cease altogether. He will then transfer his unwelcome attention elsewhere.
I would hope that the site administrators might take a somewhat more robust attitude towards this sort of thing - whatever is all that nonsense in the archive? This person has surely violated most of your guidelines.
Boby - as the target of much of this offence along with Noel - I think you've been too tolerant. Please try to ignore him whatever rubbish he might spout in order to infuriate you. That is his pathetic aim in life.
Regards, Bill
Noel / Boby
I never thought of removing the majority of the switches and just having a few to set the clock (as nobody uses the timer nowadays). I m sure there ll be enough good ones left to do that. I don t think they can be stripped but i ll look into it.
Many thanks.......Kevin
WARLORD: We are both going down mate, here you go...123628 123627/1206570772 ip121-176.cbn.net.id YOU"VE BEEN FOUND OUT, SEE YA SOON!!!!!
Boby: How in the world did you solder new LED's into that small opening? Thanks in advance, pal...
Kevin,
I'm sure switches on C7 are repairable, usually that TIMER switches have a bad contacts on the surface if you can dismantle then look for the inside contactor there must be rust on the metallic surface.
Yes as Noel said, a bad contacts produce 'signals' and triggered wrong inputs to the circuitry and may cause the main IC locked the machine.
Best,Boby.
Timmy I got your IP address and possibly your home address so get lost and stop bugging BOBY.
64.12.117.203
64.12.117.203 = cache-mtc-ah11.proxy.aol.com = TIMMY
You're almost busted, you'd better split.
Kevin,
I should have added, I remove the faulty switches on the SONY SLC5 and SLC7 mchines because when the switches fail they can lock up the machine. At least then when repairing them you can test and fix their other problems. If you wanted you could easily replace the missing switches later.
cheers Noel
Kevin,
I have not seen direct replacements but I am sure you could adapt other switches if you wanted to. My fix has been to simply remove all the switches except for the clock set and hours/ minutes switches. There are usually a couple of good switches left you can put at these positions. You don't have timer anymore, but the clock works.
cheers Noel
Does nobody moderate this forum?, there must be some one who can save us from Boby and Timmy's lovers tiff.
Boby using my name to post and using foul language wont work
Just tell me how you got the LED'S on the SL-HF950 to work
Did you replace each LED at a time?
Just tell me and I will leave.. its funny that you would allow a dispute between me and yourself go on, when just an idea of how the LED'S are replaced.
Maybe you enjoy this back and forth nonsence??
Only you know
Boby:
Stop reinforcing my opinion that you are a bore and really, not a very nice person.
I'm at the point where I don't think you ever knew how to revitalize our SL-HF950 meters. You were caught and now you are just spewing bile, dirty words and hysteria
If you do know, you are just keeping me here as an annoyance to everyone who is serious about Betamax.
Have a great life in your cesspool, Oh and by the way....
Why do you use those horrid blue LED's instead of the original green color?
Timmy
Unfortunately I found Ebay item = 130208387361,
I did sold this SLO 1800's disk assy OFFLINE at a very wrong price. ( approximately a quarter or maybe less of MSRP price )
Lucky for the buyer eh...
Best,Boby.
OK since you showing a bit of attitude, this is how my buddy Cooperfuchs doing rebuild the LED using FANUC engine. I did not lie to you, did I?

You're a smart person, you gotta know how it works.
That's all TIMMY.
is that FANUC engine filthy ?? Ah yes must be 'Cooperfuchs' that made you think nasty. You'd better find a best cleaner for your dirty Brain. No wonder you ain't got any fiends. Cooperfuchs installed the LED bar using Fanuc engine then he polished the Amber LED with blue paint. (LOL) Ah come on my dear Timmy, lighten up and try to understand that.
TIMMY;
You're talking NONSENSE. NOW, NOBOBY CARES ABOUT YOU. POST AS MANY SPAMS AS YOU LIKE.
Boby, the fact that you post filthy words and leave out the last letter.. wont work. Ever since you joined eBay as BATASHY, you become an angry man.
You have become a person we no longer know. Where is the Boby that posted here and was always willing to help?
You would think that a person that lives in a 3rd world country would be nicer to others who have tried to help you. Some day when I save up enough pounds, I will get you out of the that pit that you call home.
Again, on the SL-H950 ,do you break open the case and install new LED'S? Why are they Blue? How are you able to see those TINY LED's? Will wait for your answer.
God bless ..Timmy
Alison,
Get a video lead 3 rca to 3 rca connectors. (generally yellow/red/white)
On the Sony SLC9 you need to connect the stereo audio outputs (RCA red/white connectors) to the stereo inputs of a DVD recorder and the Video output to the video input of the DVD recorder. (using a BNC to RCA adaptor on the SLC9 to connect to your RCA yellow connector)
You put the SLC9 on play and the DVD recorder to record.
cheers Noel
I never promised you anything. I'd explained before that a friend from Europe help me with by using FANUC engine. What kind of filthy words did I speak ??????????????????????
The Green led become blue as the metamorphosis process (LOL). I did not knew that it was blue, I saw it as a dark den. Sometimes the dark den walk along the line as the audio voltarane increases.
I hope this will answer all your idiotic posts along this time.
Cheers
Timmy;
I soldered it by the help of David Cooperfuc using his FANUC engine.
Alison:
Hope these blokes will answer you. I've been trying for 3 weeks to solve an LED meter problem. They have called me all kinds of names after I refused to send them a few bob for the answer.
Best of luck...Timmy
PS...BOBY: How did you solder those big blue leds to the board????
Hello. I have just discovered this chat and hope someone can help a complete novice.I have a Sony SL C9UB betamax video recorder. What connectors do I need to be able to copy my Beta tapes onto DVD? I want to do this for a couple of wedding videos as a surprise for the 25th wedding anniveraries of the brides and grooms concerned! Thanks.
Boby:
I didn't understand one thing you just wrote.
Does this mean I'm a devil? Why the bloody name calling, sport? I offered to fly you out of that 3rd world country. England has running water and inside toilets. Is that so bad?
Please, now I'm begging...How do I replace the old LED's?
Do they have to be bright blue?
Can they be the original green?
Thanks so much, your mate, Tim.
Timmy;
Thanks for exporting me to Sommerset. I had many lovely friends in UK, don't try to play your broken record again and again.
NOW YOU DON'T HEAR WHAT KEVIN TOLD. You just lost your lovely Boby.
Seems like you're speaking to the DEVIL from now on.
Noel thanks, never mind.
Someone from Europe has bought the parts (SLO 1800)from me, if I'm not mistaken it must be NTSC.
He must've been collecting another format of BETA.
Cheers.
Regards,Boby.
Kevin,
The SLO1700 has an hour meter on it. Interesting little beast, has a gap in what appears to be a silver bar - looks a lot like a mercury thermometer and works by electrolysis to measure video head life up to 2000hrs. Then you flip it over and it works back to the start again. You can even reset it by putting a slightly higher current through it but not to much - takes 20hrs that way - but if you go too far it's broken for good.
cheers Noel
