A simple explanation on the gaps on metals ; REMEMBER that your teacher said about railway-joint gap in daylight and dawn. (...?...) The gap become smaller as the heat passes so the 2 metal joint will conduct.

P.S; When the metal is in cold state the crack-gap become wider and vice versa, resulting a bad contacs. This might not be the issue but most likely it is.

I SELL BETA machines through EBAY and GUARANTEE THEM so I don't see how I am RIPPING PEOPLE OFF. The hints I give on PALSITE are just that. If SOMEONE does not have sufficient technical skill, then they are of no use. I would not try and explain to YOU for instance how to fix a SONY SLHF950 VU meter for example.

NOW CONCENTRATE IF YOU CAN, YOU MIGHT LEARN SOMETHING.

This is a UK WEBSITE and the TV tuners of the machines I sell on eBay for AUSTRALIA, do not work in THE UK, because the TV channel and sound system arrangements are different.

Also CHECK A MAP! Australia is not very close to the UK even if someone did want BUY a machine off eBay just for playing back tapes. I don't list my machines on eBay as available outside Australia in any event because there are too many hassles arranging shipping.

The PALSITE was set up by people who are interested in BETA and want to HELP each other keep their machines going. ( a concept you don't seem to be able to grasp)

I like to fix stuff, and I am happy to give hints to others on how to do so, because it is hard to get anyone to fix a beta in our constantly growing throw away society.

OH, and in case you didn't already know. If you are in the USA as you SAY you are then they use NTSC not PAL so you are wasting your time here on PALSITE anyway. UNLESS you admit that you really just like upsetting people and that's what your hobby is.

Changing board SS28 might work but board RP17 is also involved. The problem is most likely a dry joint. (cracked solder over a period of time due to the expansion and contraction resulting from heating and cooling of dis-similar metals.)

Inspect the board(s) and resolder any suspect connections. Look for circle cracks around the legs of components and connector legs on the two boards. If you could detect a change in waveform during recording to indicate the fault or non-fault situation then you could use isolate the faulty component area is by using squirts of instant freeze to various areas of the board to bring the fault back on and heat to stop it again.

What they do is, they give you just enough information where you need to go directly to them via emails for help. If you do, that's where they pounce and try to fleece you. I tried to just get some sketchy info on an Led meter and it's been one hell of an experience. One lady got on here and tried to help me.... she too got bushwacked by these theives. General Information on something that has worked for me. Capstan rollers are becoming hard to get for most beta machines and are very expensive. A tip for those wanting to try and restore a capstan roller in a VCR. The rubber rollers become hard on the surface and can even get a build up of tape or other deposits on them. Assuming the top and bottom bearings of the holder have not collapsed or worn too much and that the rubber is not stone hard or has large cracks or holes in it, the surface may be able to be restored. Remove the roller assembly from the machine. THE SOFT TOUCH METHOD 1/ Smear undiluted detergent onto the surface of the roller but try to avoid the sides (ends) of the roller to keep it out of the bearings. 2/ Work it into the surface with your finger nail or a hard edged surface like the back of a knife and make sure the the roller surface has an even coat. 3/ Sit the holder down on its back (or whatever works if it's not a late model SONY capstan roller assembly) and allow it to soak into the rubber for 10 minute or so. 4/ Use a damp cloth or rag to remove the detergent and as much rubbish from the rollers surface as you can. The use a dry rag to rub the surface up to a dull finish. refit the assembly to the machine. THE HEAVY HANDED METHOD (Wear suitable clothing and glasses this could get messy) Get a Dremel super tool or similar with a fine grade stone grinding wheel of approx 8mm to 10mm diameter. Run the tool at half to two thirds speed and while holding the capstan rollers metal mount between your thumb and index finger with the side of the rubber roller (capstan pin side when fitted) most exposed facing up. (I have assumed it is a roller from a late model SONY. Other model holders may have to be held differently) TAKING GREAT CARE NOT TO TOUCH YOUR FINGERS apply the tool gently to the edge of the capstan roller at a 45 degree angle to the surface so that tool imparts spins to the roller up to a very fast speed and move the grinding stone across the surface slowly and evenly to the other edge keeping the pressure and motion constant until you get right to the other edge and then lift. Check that the resulting "wear" to the surface is even and has the right effect of roughening up and cleaning the capstan rollers rubber surface. Repeat the procedure until you are satisfied that the roller surface is even, clean and grips reasonably like fresh rubber. Do not take so much rubber off the roller that it significantly loses its diameter and cannot press onto the capstan when refitted. I HAVE DEVELOPED THESE METHODS OVER TIME AND THEY ARE GIVEN TO YOU WITH ALL CARE AND NO RESPONSIBILITY. DOCTOR, TIMMY, ED, TWIT, WHATEVER, time you gave a USEFUL CONTRIBUTION to the BETA HOBBY. With regard to the SLO1700 you want to sell. You have the advantage with that unit that you can say how many hours the video heads have done assuming it still has the meter in the lower centre sockets of the front panel.

The meter globes are 12volt baynet type very small. Max 0.5 to 1W. I could not source them but I used end facing end instrument lights, two in each meter to replace them and throw the same light to the meter face. Price - over $500 Au for a good one.

They have a DC/DC power supply like the SLC9 but it puts out +/- 12V for the audio circuit.

The Sony C7 warble problem is most likely due to faulty electrlytic capacitors. Take the underside base cover off, remove the screws indicated by circit board arrows and flip out the board. Replace all the light blue sanyo capacitors around the drum and servo area of the circuit.

I realize it is complex and hard to put into words.

Would it be possible to give a brief overview of just what goes wrong and a sketchy word or two on what to do?

Hi there all , adding to my last post ref. tape stuck in machine ive managed to get it repaired and its working superb now !!!! also im now looking to get rid of it so is there anybody out there wo wants to make me a reasonable offer ? (if no interest by sunday im putting it on ebay) would also like the buyer to collect from the nottingham area . would also like to hear what its worth (the only thing that requires att. is the vu meter lights !) cheers , rob

Hi All Can anyone help. I've bought in the last month 2 Sony c7 betamax machines. Both have the same problem. When playing back tapes the sound is warbling (flutter). Am i in capstan motor territory? Any assistance gratefully received. I've got home movies to transfer and would like to solve this problem. Clive
