From what i understand the problem with the VED meters on the Sony Beta Hi-Fi machines is the chip that controls them being unreliable.There is NO WAY to change this so the only alternative would be to find a relplacement that has'nt got this fault and swap it over. I had two Sony SLHF100 's one had problem with the Hi-Fi sound (no playback or very intermittent, even after cleaning the heads) although the picture was superb. The other was in superb working order but had the faulty LED VU meters.So i swapped them over. The faulty Vu's went with the faulty sound and the other machine was perfect. They are both no longer in my possession. It never ceases to amaze me that with Sony's stance and reputation their Beta machines were very troublesome and the electronics amazingly unreliable.I have heard of so many Beta enthusiasts that have the Sony models suffering with the dreaded HEAD WEAR to the irky capacitors,, the Dc to Dc converter ( C9 )+ tape cassette loading gear breakages and high end Beta Hi-Fi Faulty LED VU meters. I prefer Sanyo, amazing reliability( even the quirky Sanyo 5000 is easily repairable and has , as with most Sanyo vcr's , AMAZING longevity in the video head life).The picture may be just a tad( and i mean TAD) less impressive than the Sony equivilent but in most instances as impressive, especially considering the price Sanyo set for the same.Most servicing parts are available and servicing these is a pure joy.Probably the most annoying thing with Sanyo's 'M' series and the NX100 was the fragility of the control door hinges with most of the 'heavy handed' consumers. This info is gained with my experience in owning and servicing these machines and the hearsay and frustration of owners. I owned a MINT Sony SLHF950 but sold it due to never knowing when the major parts would give up and the not being able to obtain spares syndrome set in. Whilst i uderstand the 'loyalty' to the Sony Beta's the 'always laced up feature' and head/tape wear + other infalabilities put me off them. Not to mention the 'built like a house C7 and C5 . I had two given to me ...total junk with rust on the head drums , and they weighed a TON.The Sanyo 5000 was around the same time and was so light and has proven itself (together with the other later models) that they were well made , put together and built to last.Think of them like a Toyota Corolla.. amazing reliability and you just need to change the rubber( tyres ) every time the mileage indicates this. I just really wish that Sanyo had released it's 7250 Superbeta over here in the UK.I have the NTSC version in MINT condition.......and it works like a dream.They really made a BIG mistake with ignoring us UK buyers with that model. Hope this info has enlightened a few and it's great to see there ARE still so many Beta enthusiasts out there..............It's also great to see a BETA vcr is now worth so much more than the inferior VHS.

Slowly but painfully I am running out of Beta options. I dread the thought of going strictly to DVD, but that may become my only solution.

My SL-HF840D, a touchy machine almost from the day I bought it, now does not know what speed to use for playback. It jumps about from Beta I to Beta III when I am trying to playback a Beta III tape. It doesn't matter whether the tape was recorded on this or on my SL-HF2000. Makes the picture look off-tracking, and the sound is like chipmunks.

I had a Sanyo Beta years ago that did this, but Sanyo admitted to a design defect in a board and fixed the machine for free. No such luck here, I am sure. This machine has been to Sony in Burbank once already, at a high cost, for repair when it refused to play back its own recordings (blank screen, no tape advance).

If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them. Meanwhile, I have two backup machines that may substitute for a while. Sigh.

Very interesting, Charlie...yes the 4 channel was quite the thing in its heyday.

Hopefully we can continue this high level of Beta-talk and the "Olives" "Bobys" "Marks" "K .Lamberts" will eventually leave. They have really ruined what was once a delightful and pleasant message board where good folks met and exchanged information.

Harold, I have a SL-HFR- 70 and a 200 processor . I play back through my 35 year old 4 channel stereo that I bought when I was in the service years ago and it plays fine.I have never tried the new surround sound stereo.For all the PAl beta people the SL-HFR series of NTSC betas were capable of stereo sound when connected to a special processor. They worked pretty darn good and allowed the owner who didn't have the money for a regular Beta HI-FI to buy the VCR then later buy the processor to make it a Beta HI-FI unit.It had a Beta HI-FI light just like the regular HI-FI's and the processor itself could be turned on and off by the VCR power switch.

Here's one for fellow owners of the various Sony SL-HFR/HFP combo units. Irecently connected one of my SL-HFR units (SL-HFR70 with HFP -200 processor)to my Pioneer RX-590 Dolby Pro-Logic receiver, which is in turn outputtingthe audio signal to a Sony SA-VE315 home theater satellite speaker system.Expecting surround sound from the Beta Hi-Fi Pro-Logic encoded movie tapeplaying in the SL-HFR70/HFP -200, I was surprised when the resulting audiocame out of the CENTER-CHANNEL SPEAKER ONLY. There was no audio coming fromthe front L/R or the surround speakers. Not sure why the audio was comingonly from the center speaker, I disconnected this unit from the receiverand connected one of my other SL-HFR/HFP units (a SL-HFR60/HFP-100 combounit), and played the same tape over the system again. Same result with theSL-HFR60/HFP-100: audio from the center speaker only; no audio activityfrom the L/R front or surround speakers. This had me completely stumped, asthe regular SL-HF units in my Beta collection has had no problemtransmitting surround-sound audio when connected to the receiver. Just tomake sure, I then played the very same movie tape in turn through mySL-HF900, SL-HFT7, and SL-HF860D, all connected to the samereceiver/speaker set-up; all three of these SL-HF units played the tapewith resulting surround sound coming from all five satellite speakers. I'mcertain the Beta HFP Hi-Fi processors are working correctly, which leavesme with a possible conclusion that for whatevertechnical/electronical/systematical reasons, the SL-HFR/HFP combo units arenot able to correctly transmit/pass on the proper audio signal to aPro-Logic receiver to decode the audio for appropriate surround sound. Thisof course is just a hypothesis drawn from observation/experience; I have notechnical knowledge or know-how to back this up. But I would be veryinterested in the observations and experiences of other SL-HFR/HFP combounit owners if they had the same problem when they connected their combounits to a receiver/home theater speaker system, as well as opinions andtheories from Betaphile folks at large. This one's got me stumped; I'd beinterested in hearing opinions and thoughts from one and all out there.

Harold, that is very interesting. ONE-FOR-ALL products are available in the UK, but are mainly used for satellite receivers and TVs, not for VCRs. They're much more expensive than the price you quote, but so is everything else in this country! Our digital satellite receivers are nearly all geared for Sky, and use the same remotes. I had never thought of using one for my Betas.

I don't recognise your model as corresponding to any of those sold in the UK. Does it have any other info, model/serial numbers or whatever that might help me to trace an UK version if one exists?

I want to let the Palsite know that I found a very good universalremote control. The ONE-FOR-ALL Pro-Producer-7 Universal Learning/PreProgrammed Remote Control is $33 dollars at my local CircuitCity (and I have since seen it at Best Buy). It includes the normal array of pre-programmed VCR functions, and also includes theENTER key required by Sony when doing direct access to channels. It is very flexible with regard to re-assigning one device toanother, so I am able to control 4 VCR's from this one remote (2 of which are Sony VCR1 and VCR2.) Best of all, this remote alsohas 16 non-labelled buttons which can be "taught" all of the special features from any remote. I used it to program all of theunique Betascan controls on one of my SL-HF750's using the remote from my SL2700. Later, when I finally broke down and bought a real750 remote from Sony, I added the indexing and programming functions to his universal remote, too.

So, if you have a Sony Beta VCR without a remote, you might try a latemodel Sony VHS remote, or you might try this universal remote. And if you can't find someone who can "teach" it all of yourunique functions, let me know and I will be be glad to use my remote and teach it for you.

Hello Everyone, I was lucky enough to pick up a SL-f1ub over the weekend but there is no power unit or tuner I know it is 12volt Does anyone know how can make a power unit to run the video or does anyone have one for sale ? Hi Harry:It sounds as though the capacitors have failed on the capstan servo.A common problem on that model.I believe they are Sanyo made and light blue in colour.Not sure the number or value.Hope this helps.............Kevin
