To kick the new era off, I offer this query:

I have a Sony SL-HF300 that has a minor problem, and I'm hopingsomeone here can help me figure out what it is. When doing recordings, itlooks like there's some interference on the very bottom of the picture. Itmoves back and forth along the bottom, and is sort of "colorful." Thisisn't easy to describe, so I'm hoping someone understands this description.It does it especially when I record BII over BIII on the same tape or viceversa. If I record on a blank portion of the tape it will usually go awayafter a second or two, but sometimes stays for the whole recording. Thisstarted to happen when I put new heads on, and I did re-align the tape pathas necessary, so I'm guessing it may have to do with some adjustment Imissed. Other than that minor problem, the VCR works excellent.If anyone can help me with this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

Firstly ☺;,let's talk NEC BETAS!

Up for discussion, the NEC VC-739E, is my 4-head Beta HiFi that has lots of nice features (e.g., 3 slow motion and 2x speeds). I also happen to have 3 others, two of which had the same problem as the last one I won. In other words, here is a machine that I know very well, know exactly how to fix, and even have an extra remote and manual to use with it. The machine is cosmetically excellent, so clearly there is no particular reason to believe that the machine has been dropped or been abused.

I’m sure you all will be delighted to know that within 20 minutes of opening the box, without spending another penny I had the machine working like the day it was made. It was cleaned, nicely aligned, and every function worked perfectly. The extra VC-739 remote also worked it perfectly.

Some on this site have commented that the VC-739E made by NEC is the best non-Sony Beta HiFi ever made.

Oh and by the way,I also just bought a Sony SL-HF900 for $49.99 from the Cleveland Browns football team in perfect shape along with a dozen L-750 tapes. I wonder what you all must think of the buyer who just paid more than $380 for the same machine tonight?

Hi I have been asked, via e-mail, to discuss the Sanyo logo change. Rather than answer all these e-mails, I have decided to use this forum. The change over happened in 1987.I know this because i started working at one of their factories at that time. Sanyo's first VHS trio still had the old 'three waves' logo and they were released in 1986 (UK).They then merged with another part f their empire and created the 'neptune style' N. A lot of their VHS machines went very upmarket and this was to increase their market share that had dwindled to about 5% in 1985. Sanyo were also in 1986 simultaneously in three format camps, BETA,VHS & 8mm ,together with Sony. Sanyo to some are considered 'cheap and cheerful' and this is probably due to their (successful) bargain basement stance.They have proved , however, that they can compete with the best in terms of technology and high tech developements. I have always found their products to be excellent value , excellently reliable,attractive looking ( most cases) , ergonomically sound with great performance ,especially taking the other comments mentioned into account and the customer service is pretty dam good too. The only item they produce which does'nt quite meet these standards ,picture quality wise ,( compared to the best) are their TV's. I think maybe they try to compromise and keep the price low at the expense of the WOW factor with PHILLIPS,TOSHIBA et al. You only have to look at ther Beta machines and the fact most are still going strong and if they are faulty or a bit tired are so easy to rectify.The parts to( service) are still readily available . It'll be interesting to see how their new plasma screens hold up.... K.L.☺;

Hi Matthew:The problem you've experienced with your Sanyo M10 is the first time i've heard of that happening.These machines are VERY robust in that areas as well as the entire machine.The rubber components will be the only cause of grief in not regularly serviced.

The only way i could think that would happen is if someone has removed the two metal plates at the top of the mechanism.This would cause the tape loading tray to try to load at a downward angle.As the two plastic loading tray guides would pop up

I'm sure Noel can help you with that issue though.As for your Sony C6. I'd summise capacitors causing those issues.Very common on that model.Good Luck..................Kevin

On sunday while cleaning up my video shed, I was using the Sanyo M10 that I bought locally in Adelaide Australia for 50 bucks and it's being playing greatly

Then I went to put an original of Rocky 4 in and while having the tape dead centre in my hands and beginning to let the machine take it, the machine grabbed it sideways, the tape got jammed so I had to get it out and unfortunately it seems as though the tape tray/path is stuck half way between down and up.

With this machine there is no lacing of the tape strip until play is pressedSo it's time to send it over to you noel because no one in Adelaide will even take them

The tray doesn't appear broken, just stuck sideways but I can hear the motor is trying to move the tray but it's jammed in between two positions

Also my beloved Sony C6 has once again started losing it's capstan lock, so the picture tracking goes in and out. Hopefully you won't need parts for the Sanyo and once I get it back then the Sony C6 will be posted over by Australia post express mail with insurance (can't afford to lose them)

After reviewing your website, I have my eyes on the SL HF150 stereo machine on your siteI might update to a stereo machine soon and start putting my most prized betamax original movies on DVD

Oh yeah I've also got two sanyo VTC 5300 's that are not rewinding or playing that you may like as parts

Badwolf, why would you want to connect a beta to a dvd PLAYER? It is impossible anyway as a DVD PLAYER has no inputs, only outputs. Do you mean a dvd recorder?

Assuming you're trying to connect to a DVD player and not a DVD recorder you connect the audio and video outputs of the DVD player to the A/V input of the Beta VCR. Then connect the Beta VCR to the TV in similar fashion. If your TV set doesn't A/V inputs you can connect the Beta VCR's RF jack to the TV's with the appropriate cable - you'll have to connect the Antennae or Cable TV to the Beta VCR.

What I was really getting at was the additional complexity required to maintain the functions you have now in respect of analogue, without constantly plugging leads in and out. Over here, you could go down to your local Sainsbury's and buy a VERY, VERY basic but functional decoder for seventeen quid. Lash out and buy several and you could theoretically stick one in front of every spot in your system currently

expecting to receive UHF. However, depending in the complexity of your setup, that could result in an utterly nightmarish tangle of signal and power leads. There's also the timer problem as you point out. I guess if the worst came to the worst you could probably daisychain in UHF, but that is of course a recipe for absolutely terrible quality which in a digital system would presumably cause complete dropouts. In any case my oldish Panasonic DV recorder doesn't loop through anything except UHF, and newer ones don't seem to be be any better.

I'm lucky, presumably due to living in the most highly populated area in the country. Our analogue switch off will not happen for several years, but some areas in the UK are facing it very much sooner. It looks like our American colleagues are in an even worse situation.

I think it's a quite important issue for BETA users. If we can show that as a superior recording system BETA can cope with and work with the digital age it would be an excellent advertisement. I think that VHS will go under very early in the game, if indeed it hasn't already started. The other day I saw a standard VHS VCR selling for 49 quid retail!

Mike, I hope this has taught you that you start a new and interesting topic on this site at your own risk! I came across your posting when I was considering how best to use the LCD TV I was already committed to buying and it most certainly set me to thinking about some of the issues we face in preserving our beloved format. Much the same scenario exists in Australia but we are currently running both analogue and digital transmissions in parallel. That is, transmissions of free to air channels in both modes. The digital of course having the advantage of running extra programs. Analogue switch-off is not to far away.

Provided your beta recorder has AV inputs you can record of the AV output of a digital set-top box, DVR, DVD recorder/player or digital or analogue cable TV and bonus, to my knowledge, the beta is not fussed by the copy protection in any of these systems.

I have tried it on the Sony SLC9AS sitting below my Imac computer (both works of art with a great match in colour scheme) and the timer function of the SLC9AS works on AV recording. If you need to record ore than one program channel while you are away things get a little messy but its really up to the features of what you are feedingin whether you can get around that. You only have up to 3hrs 20min time anyway unless you have a stacker ;-)

I think you've opened quite an interesting can of worms. While our UK switchover is much less draconian, being made by region and over several years, it will still have considerable implications for Beta users. Not least of these is the question of just where in your system you locate your decoder(s) for best viewing and recording quality.

My system includes two S-VHS decks - one transport defunct and used as a NICAM stereo tuner for an SLHF100 - two BETAs plus DVD recorder, DVD player, computer hard disk and TV set which has an on-board digital decoder but doesn't break the signal out.

What I think I will do is set out a sort of a flow chart for my setup up and try to see what the alternatives are. If it's interesting, I will of course air it on this site.

Hi:You would indeed get a superior picture from a digital source but also make sure you get a decent quality digital receiver.You could only record one timer event (using the digital source this way) if wanting to use multiple channels whilst not at home, unless you could programme the digital receiver to go to your desired channels.Hope this helps...........

Hello out there, I live in the U.S. and in February of next year, all TV stations here will be forced by law to quit broadcasting in analog and must switch over to digital broadcasting. There will be converter boxes available and there already are now, which receive the digital signals, and are for hooking up to old TV sets with analog tuners, thus allowing them to receive over the air digital broadcasts. These would also be used for old VCRs without digital tuners. Of course, that would be all beta vcrs. In order to record over the air broadcasting, you would put the converter box on the channel you want and record from the converter box. I suppose you could still use the VCR timer if you left the converter box on and put it on the channel you would want to record from. However, if you are not home to fool with the converter box, and would want to record from another channel, you would not be able to. So does this mean that timer recording on a beta will pretty much be useless when the switch is made from analog to digital? Also, will the picture quality of the recording be worse since it is not recording directly from its internal tuner, but rather an external source?

What I remembered is the IC for gain control of an Audio board, Something has to be modified on HF950 board. I just imagine that there's bug in HF950 HIFI board. ( bug = wrong design) or maybe to implant the IC for other beta type of machine possibly.....

You know, my first computer is just a Z80 based PC wich is one step lower than Amiga/Commodore(probably the same). It's just a single board computer with a TV out signal for display device(TV screen as monitor),everyone in UK knows this as ZX spectrum. Then I use PS2 afterwards and Pentium60/90 for the nextgen. FISH OR CHICKEN BATTER

1 c. flour1/2 c. cornstarch1 tsp. salt1 1/2 c. beer (can use water or milk), beer gives the batter better flavor

Stir together flour, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk in cold beer. Cover and refrigerate one hour, then whisk again before dipping fish or chicken. Immediately pan-fry the fish or chicken in a small amount of oil until golden and crisp, turning once, or deep fry. This batter can be used on vegetables also.

Lately I find that the best way to lubricate my Beta vcrs is to use pure cooking lard available at any grocery store. I apply it sparingly to all the parts requiring lubrication as it is superior in lubricity to molylubenium specified for this purpose and lasts longer too. I also use it to coat the inside and exterior of the lid of my Beta vcr as it produces a fine shine, cleans thoroughly, and prevents rust from occurring.

I would not suggest using afood-based product as a lubricant for your VCR for a couple of reasons. The lard may break down chemically due to expose to air, heat orcontaminants, and not be as lubricating. It may also attract bugs. Supposedly roaches are attracted by the plastic wrappings on wires in TVsets and have been known to eat the wires and fry TVs. These and otherbugs may be attracted by the scent of lard as food for them and have aparty in your VCR.

However, when I press the eject button, the light on the switch lights whilst it is pressed, the left hand spool spins momentarily, but the the mechanism does not open the loading/unloading bay (it is a top loader). Until I can get past this I cannot test any of the other functions wind/rewind, play etc.

Is there a transit lock that keeps this closed or does anybody have any suggestions?

From what i understand the problem with the VED meters on the Sony Beta Hi-Fi machines is the chip that controls them being unreliable.There is NO WAY to change this so the only alternative would be to find a relplacement that has'nt got this fault and swap it over. I had two Sony SLHF100 's one had problem with the Hi-Fi sound (no playback or very intermittent, even after cleaning the heads) although the picture was superb. The other was in superb working order but had the faulty LED VU meters.So i swapped them over. The faulty Vu's went with the faulty sound and the other machine was perfect. They are both no longer in my possession. It never ceases to amaze me that with Sony's stance and reputation their Beta machines were very troublesome and the electronics amazingly unreliable.I have heard of so many Beta enthusiasts that have the Sony models suffering with the dreaded HEAD WEAR to the irky capacitors,, the Dc to Dc converter ( C9 )+ tape cassette loading gear breakages and high end Beta Hi-Fi Faulty LED VU meters. I prefer Sanyo, amazing reliability( even the quirky Sanyo 5000 is easily repairable and has , as with most Sanyo vcr's , AMAZING longevity in the video head life).The picture may be just a tad( and i mean TAD) less impressive than the Sony equivilent but in most instances as impressive, especially considering the price Sanyo set for the same.Most servicing parts are available and servicing these is a pure joy.Probably the most annoying thing with Sanyo's 'M' series and the NX100 was the fragility of the control door hinges with most of the 'heavy handed' consumers. This info is gained with my experience in owning and servicing these machines and the hearsay and frustration of owners. I owned a MINT Sony SLHF950 but sold it due to never knowing when the major parts would give up and the not being able to obtain spares syndrome set in. Whilst i uderstand the 'loyalty' to the Sony Beta's the 'always laced up feature' and head/tape wear + other infalabilities put me off them. Not to mention the 'built like a house C7 and C5 . I had two given to me ...total junk with rust on the head drums , and they weighed a TON.The Sanyo 5000 was around the same time and was so light and has proven itself (together with the other later models) that they were well made , put together and built to last.Think of them like a Toyota Corolla.. amazing reliability and you just need to change the rubber( tyres ) every time the mileage indicates this. I just really wish that Sanyo had released it's 7250 Superbeta over here in the UK.I have the NTSC version in MINT condition.......and it works like a dream.They really made a BIG mistake with ignoring us UK buyers with that model. Hope this info has enlightened a few and it's great to see there ARE still so many Beta enthusiasts out there..............It's also great to see a BETA vcr is now worth so much more than the inferior VHS.

I have a sony SL-C20 Betamax recorder that I can't manage to tune into my tv. It seems to function perfectly well as a machine but just can't hook it up to the tv. any ideas? If anyone is willing to make an offer to buy it, would be interested in that too.
