THE SLHF-870-D STORY
by Steven Klink
The Sony SLHF-870-D, SuperBeta HiFi VCR, was an outgrowth of one of the favorites of Betamax Afficionados, the 860-D VCR.
The 870-D has the same basic features of: a Digital EffectsProcessor with Picture in Picture capability, Digital Mosaic, Digital Art (Solarization), Flash Motion (Strobe effect), Multi-mini framed pictures, perfect Digital Freeze Frame, Digital Scan (allowing for visual scanning in the fast forward or reversemode) & Digital Pause, plus all the Editing Features of the 860-Das well, including Synchro-Edit, Micro Time Phase Edit (glitch free),and Control S.
But to these features of the 860-D, the 870-D addedthe EDV-7500's more stable transport mechanism with TapeStabilizer System, the Faroudja Image Processing System, Tilted SputteredSendust Heads, Decorative Walnut Wood End Caps andFour Circular Silver Foot Pods on it's bottom to raise it for betterventilation and a graceful appearance.
It's Video and Stereo Audio performance are spectacular. It is a beautiful and quality Betamax.
That's it for today. Dr. Steve Klink
It seems like every time I post an informative on topic post or try to assist someone, I get sniped. (Hi Olive, Hi Boby)
I love the hobby and these unhappy folks will not deter me.

I'm not trying to fool anyone Olive, But you are doing a fine job of it..
Its quite odd that you were no where to be found until this board started to get erased and all of a sudden you popped up like a filthy Roach from no where.. What a coincidence.
Do us all a favor Olive and Boby, Talk about Betamax and stop back stabbing this Site.
In any event , the nonsense HERE is over, and if you have nothing to add , OLIVE , then you and Boby can go to your Yahoo page and throw Barbs at each other ..
ølive_e_thømas@yahøø¸.com
I love how timmy the tool jacks off on some innocent chatpage and has the gall to pull the Internet Cop routine when everyone calls him out on it.
You're not fooling anyone. All we hafta do is view source to see your lameass AOL address.
So do us a favor and go back to the Danish Kiddie Porn sites you usually jack off on...
And stop picking on Boby or one of his friends at the Lucky Goldstar plastics factory is liable to 'put something' in the 'Vibro Pleasure 2000' you have on back order.
BOBY, Instead of having a negative comment every time I try to help a fellow Betaphile, why don't you either clean up your eBay auction ID: BETASHY from Indonesia OR contribute something to this board.
I'm starting to wonder if you didn't take joy in this board being erased and now making negative comments and foul language now that the Beta Chat page is some what back to normal.
I always thought you were a good person.. Stop it now ..Invest your time adding to this chat page and not going along with the SLIME that wants to bring it down..
Its easy to be a MORON.. Harder to use your mind.. The choice is yours BOBY
Hi Steven, how're you doing, not bad right?
I just can't figure out why you keep REFLECTING yourself. Are you happy doing it?No I don't think so, do yourself a favor will you.Just keep the topic on Betamax only and get rid of the loads! You must be happy if you do. I'll bet you will.
Cheers
Kennard> (((Boby)))) >Ivan > Olivia> Watcher> Betashy on eBay (the list of names BOBY uses is growing), lets stop rehashing what I originally diagnosed concerning the Sanyo problem.
What I said was correct about the gentleman's Sanyo Betamax, if anyone else can add something different concerning a solution, that's fine....stop saying the same thing over and over about a simple and quite common problem. It's bad form, folks.
Boby, contribute to this discussion with new information. The nastiness is not called for. Be nice, like you are in your eBay video eye auctions.

@@@@
in Regards of Kevin post:
Static charge due to storm severely damage sensitive parts although the IC have internal diode protection.
Faulty voltage regulator triggered the clock generator to do its own counting.
You can count on Kevin with SANYO problem.
Berty,
The above said basically what I told you other than the electrical storm.
The only thing I didn't say was "e-mail me privately".
I would be leary of anyone asking folks to do that. The proverb " a fool and his money are soon parted" would apply, if you get my drift.
Most problems can be resolved right here in a public forum.
Just use good judgement especially on this rather suspect chatpage.
Steve
Hi Berty:I have a lot of experience with the Sanyo Beta's.Has the vcr been in the vicinity of any electrical storms? This would or could damage the Ic's particularly the clock/timer.The scrolling through the channels could be the voltage regulatoror the above mentioned.I have a few used spares for that model.Feel free to e-mail privatley and we'll go from there.................Kevin
Berty,
The first place I would start on that particular model, is the power supply.
If you are a novice, I would just go ahead and replace all the electrolytic caps rather than try to guess which one may be at fault. They are pretty cheap at most parts outlets.
That not helping, I would suspect the clock/timer integrated circuit...don't think those are available from Sanyo any more.
One more thing...disregard any idiot responses that you probably noticed on this site. There is a whole cadre of "a" holes who constantly are trying to get noticed. One actually sells on eBay under the moniker "Betashy". You would think he would be more adult in his approach.
Let us know how you make out, Steve
Sanyo VTC 6500 Betamax vcr has developed a fault. Yesterday i noticed the clock had started flashing, so i turned it on to find that the station lights were scrolling through from 12 to 1 repeatedly. There is no control over the clock or tv tuner settings. No matter what i do i cannot stop it. If i put it in standby the clock continues to flash 8888. If i take the plug out and leave it a while before plugging it back in the same happens. No matter what buttons are pressed nothing happens. Any ideas??
A word about cleaning tapes and the warnings against their use:
All video tape has cleaning (read abrasive) elements incorporated intoit, otherwise reliable video recording would be impossible due to headclogging. 3M cleaning tapes are video tape with a higher proportion ofcleaning elements. Thus they cannot damage the machine or the heads. Why doesn't everyone do it this way? Because 3M has the patents. Whenthey expire, all cleaning tapes will be made this way.
I have used the 3M cleaning tapes for years with no problems.
One more thing, if you don't have the aformentioned tape, running a new (clean) roll of tape will clean and unclog a head,,,, it is just that you have to run it through an hour ormore though to do the job.
Steve
Those of you who had video recorders back in the early or mid 1970s mightbe able to make thousands of television fans deliriously happy...
some of you know how the BBC trashed many episodes of their televisionshows twenty years ago, and for fans of shows like DOCTOR WHO this meansmany episodes will never be seen again.
But there's always a chance thatsomeone out there was fortunate enough to tape episodes aired in theearly or mid 1970s in the United States - and not realise they could havethe only copy known to exist!
If you have any DOCTOR WHO episodes that were taped in the early or mid1970s please contact me here and we can figure out ifyou are holding a rare piece of television history.
Steve
Boby Betashy,
I will do that.
Please do the same. Don't go back to the foul language and nonsense.
Good luck with your eBay business, Steve.
The only thing I can add is TURN YOURSELF A NEW LEAF AND SEE HOW GREAT YOU ARE!
See ya
Steven, I'm not into you. Like I said above I wish I could help but I'm not the person supposed to be, if I were you I cannot face the world and especially to all Betafellas here. Help yourself by seeing somebody you can trust in a real world. OK Steven(?)
Kudos...you are spot on in your impersonation!
Excellent work, although you make that idiot sound better than he usually does!
Morning too Steven (?)Solving your betamax problem is easy tho.I'd like to help you but I can't.You have too much problem.Sorry to disappointed you, really am.Maybe you need someone else's hand. You can say I'm a jabbering Boby, I'm not mad at you because I am NOT the one. (LOL)
Morning all: I have a Sony SL-HF860D with a problem.
The capstan motor won'tstart on it's own, and once I start it by hand, the speed isn't stable. Thesound warbles, and a white line goes through the picture about twice asecond.
I'm not sure the exact problem, whether it isthe capstan motor itself or in the servo section. I would appreciate anyhelp with this.
Sorry to have to address the above Jakarta representative:
Boby, look who can formulate coherent sentences. Now look who cannot.
Boby, look at who can communicate useful, on topic information on this board. Now look at who is just a gadfly, spewing bile and adding nothing to the topic, the hobby or civilized interaction.
But by all means Boby (IVAN, OLIVIA, WATCHER), please continue ranting. Better to find you at your computer venting your limitless anger than riding city buses or being anywhere near socialized people.

Thanks for clearing the comments up. My mistake.
The way this joker, Boby was posting (i.e. no name, Ivan, Olivia, Watcher etc.) and using filthy language I thought the comments were directed at him.
He has a long history of creating problems on this site. Sometimes he calms down for long periods, but then he invariably reverts to a 3 year old child with dysentary.
If he wants to contribute to this board in an adult manner, that's fine. His moronic side will no longer be tolerated.

After reading your post, I removed that brass bushing you described from the plastic gear.
Some "Super" type glue and pressure applied aligned the plastic teeth perfectly. (I left that bushing out)
Loading now operates smoothly and to my surprise, the rest of the machine checks out fine.
Thanks for the tip....Steve

Steven,
Don't even bother to comment on Boby, of course he will have to defend himself.
Sony 1700 with that problem, remove lid cover and top cover. Check black drive gear that has the rubber belt driving it same as a C9. If you remove the belt and the lock clip (washer) you can lift off the black drive gear and turn it over. It most likely has a brass centre and has the plastic gear cracked and spread. If so replace this gear if you can. Otherwise, use a sharp blade or pointed instrument to put diagonal score marks in the surface of the plastic V on the gear to increase the belts friction driving this gear and do the same on the drive gear. This may be enough to overcome the added friction of the broken toothed gear when you reassemble the machine.
cheers Noel
In keeping with K .Lambert's sensible request:
I have just purchased a Sony Beta HiFi PAL Stereo SLO-1700 VCR on ebay as in working condition (LOL).
It switches on, all lights illuminate. However, when I press the eject button, the light on the switch lights whilst it is pressed, the left hand spool spins momentarily, but the the mechanism does not open the loading/unloading bay (it is a top loader).
Until I can get past this I cannot test any of the other functions wind/rewind, play etc.
Is there a transit lock that keeps this closed or does anybody have any suggestions?
Really need help on this....
BOBY, please knock it off. Your posts have nothing to do with our hobby. They are, at this point, old and tedious. Most on here have no idea what your beef is. In the future could you keep whatever is bothering you to yourself. Thanks in advance. Steve

Gratefully, the system administrator has removed his posts that were filled with language not suitable for this site. His feces references were the worst I ever witnessed during my 6 year affiliation with the Palsite.
It would serve us well to not respond to this Jakarta representative and continue posting well thought out and informative Betamax related thoughts and ideas.
I thank everyone for at least considering my proposal.
Steve Klink
Stephan, If you are using an RF lead, Is your machine correctly tuned to the tv? If may be interfering with a TV channel nearby the VCR frequency, this will require you to adjust the RF output of the VCR, moving it away from that channel (you may find the rf adjustment on the rear of the vcr). When you do this you will also have to retune the TV to the VCR. Failing this use some AV leads for a better result as tuning will not be neccessary.
Hi Noel, Thanks for the offer, but I'm not aiming to complete the collection in any way. It's just a record of the ones I currently have!
Why would my SONY Betamax SL-HF100SA suddenly give out a black and white picture instead of colour? It is about a year ago since I last used it.

Those are indeed Beta cassettes on top of that Sanyo Betacord. I have several tapes with the double window shell like those two in the auction.
Hmm, that's interesting. Here's the auction link - http://in.ten.ebid.net/perl/auction.cgi?auction=1214522027-30006-0&mo=auction - I think the cassette door says Betacord - but those don't look like beta cassettes, do they?
Hi Michael:
No they did'nt the Betacord system was as in the name Beta.It sounds to me like someones advertising this incorrectly. They DID make VHS models under the Fisher brand ( before making them under their own name in 1986).At around that time Sanyo were the ONLY main manufacturer making BETA,VHS and 8mm format machines for all dmestic markets..........................Kevin

Did Sanyo market some VHS VCRs as Betacord? Just seen an eBid listing for a '1985 Sanyo Betacord 4035', with what appear to be VHS tapes.
I recently purchased a Sony SL-HF450 Superbeta VCR on eBay, and I need someassistance.
On the top of the machine there is a door with some controls underit. Apparently this design has the buttons on the panel push down on a swivelUNDERNEATH the circuit board to work contacts on the underside of the board.Unfortunately, the parts of the panel which reach under and hold on thisswivelpart have broken off, so the controls do not work.
According to what Sony toldmy local VCR tech, this part is no longer available.
Anybody here who mighthave access to such a part?

Opal, thank you for your help. I really appreciate your concern.
No m8, I'll carry on posting IP addresses if need be. It's not right to use other peoples names and post. Hope you understand Kevin, you seem to have got the wrong idea about the whole aspect.
Hi GuysWhilst thing are back to normal (hooray!) can i suggest ANY posts NOT relating to Betamax/vcr's, models or problems/issues be TOTALLY IGNORED.Pointless posting such rubbish about IP addresses and the like. Anyone who continues to do so, is as bad as the flamer themselves....This is a Beta chatsite keep all the other nonsense to yourself, we're not interested..........Kevin

Matthew,
No problems.

Well, I can't lower myself all the way to your level but I can drop part way if only for my own amusement. The song goes that with folks like you I should "try a little kindness," but you so relish, it would seem, the role of verbal punching bag that I thought I'd take you to task while the pizza bakes. There's nothing for me to lose because you don't know who I am. But I sure as hell know who you are, Alan, and kind of wonder sometimes whether your colleagues get to see the same profoundly dysfunctional side of you that we do. I know you are upset because you made a fool of yourself with the smarmy, paternalisitc language you used to address me when you really thought that I use my real name in these posts. It must have been a pretty uncomfortable moment when that dawned on you. Of course, it could be that you knew all along, and that you are instead upset that I didn't gasp and swoon at your lame chivalry. Either way, I think that to find the true "gender-bender," you need to take a peek in the mirror. I don't know what's in it for you weaving these idiotic, informationally value-less and verbally retarded tales, especially since I'm evidently the only one here stupid enough to read them. But if it fulfills your theory on catharsis, what the hell. It doesn't cost me anything. But I really wish you would look into the thrills and rewards of stamp collecting.
