JAMES S, I believe its been said before here in response to your query, the head chips are not available sepaerately now or ever before. The disk is assembled with the cips at the factory period. There is no way anyone could mount the tips on the disk correctly so this is done at the factory by precision assembly. The part no is dsr-21r for the genuine sony disk for the c9. I picked two up from a supplier in australia last year, sadly these were the last two they had. Cost about £20 each. A friend of mine had one, I still have the other.

Homer, thanks for the reply, can get on with ordering one now, far cheaper than ordering the heads separately, assuming I haven't misread the website and the £124 head price is in fact the whole disk assembly! Does anyone know if the head list on this site is giving the stock code for the head chips alone or the disk? Finally got the service manual but can't get the damn thing to open!

Hi, Noel, maybe you can advise on this one, one of my 950s has a juddery shake when ejectng. The drawer is fine but the actual tape holder pops up with a juddery action when empty. When a tap is inside its fine, nice and smooth. What could be the problem?

Buster,

To check the PS001 electronic fuse just switch the machine on (that is not standby mode) and see if the voltage is the same both sides of the fuse. Worry about getting another when you prove it is faulty.

Hi again all, still chasing my VH replacement for the C9UB. Just wondering if someone is familiar with spares list parlance: if I buy the complete head disk (or listed as head disk assembly) does that include the heads or is it literally the bare disk?

Hi folks I am looking for a NP-11 battery for my Sony BMC-100p camcorder.

The battery I have is practically dead. I've heard that you could open it up and replace it with another camcorder battery. Has anyone tried this?

Re : HF100 Av issues. Many Thanks Stuart & Noel Higgins for your suggestions. To Stuart: Yes, there is picture and sound when tuning a TV on the Video RF out. I have had a first look at YC-28 Board. I have found only one of such electronic fuses Noel mentioned: it's named PS001, closed to CN3 3 way connector, but I haven't checked yet. Maybe this is the only one in this model ? Anyway, in case the board had to be replaced (Printed Ref. is 1.612-339-12)is it easy to obtain and which could be the approx. price? Should it be possible to get the electronic diagram anywhere ? Thanks. I will carry out the checkings in the meantime.

Noel is the best one to take the beta's too as he has heaps of machines for parts and is a damn fine repair man too.however the postage is a little painful so I will try U matics and whatever machines they can't fix will then go on to noel.

the three sanyo 5300's are not really much interest to me. I only took them as they were free. might use them for tape rewinders only.

Shane, Try replacing the pinch roller. That should cure you blank screen problem. The pinch roller is worn just enough to deflect the tape away from the ACE head and make the picture go away.If I remember right the dropout occurs more at the middle and end of a tape then it does at the beginning.I to have a 750 in my collection and have had to replace the roller on it as well as some of my other betas. They all had the symtoms you described. If you can see the tape running ahead of the roller and it's not nice and flat then the roller probably needs replaced. Keep in mind other things can cause that including back tension and tape alignment .I get my pinch rollers from Studio Sound Electronics. They're $10 bucks and the pinch roller is a good place to start. Hope that helps you-- let me know.

Hi all,I have a Super Beta Hi-fi model number SL-HF750. It has been working fine and now I get intermittent blank screens. I believe they are called dropouts. I found on one of the pages on the site a model that looks close talking about static charge and a small plastic screen to discharge it but it does not say how to do it. Can anyone tell me what to do? Also I hope this is the appropriate place for my question. If not please let me know. Thanks

Hi Noel, I'll have a closer look and see. If the slow play head was U/S would that affect the slow play picture, because it plays that fine, in fact from a recording made on the machine it plays it back better than at normal speed!

James S,

The C9 head assembly has three heads. One of the assemblies has a small head on the side of the normal head which is how they get the "perfect" slow motion which is actually repeating the same scan line twice hence really the picture half the resolution. So what is damaged is probably the slow motion head. For a quick fix losing slow motion use a standard 2 chip head from say an SLC30 or an SLF30. Sure you wont have slow motion but you will have all the other great C9 features such as real time counter, stereo audio, APS (picture search etc.) Still perfect for transfers.

HI Noel, the record problem is the dreaded bleed in the highlights/blacks, and if there's a lot of contrast it adds a bit of wobble too. One of the heads is visually damaged: the field coils don't seem to actually be on it any more! With the JVC heads it was on a spares website listed as a replacement part, but I have to admit it does puzzle me a little!

Matt,

The C9 issue of the C9 stopping intermittently is most likely related to low forward tension. The forward pickup spool can grab more and more as it fills up with tape. The machine senses that the tape is loose (see the pickup sensor just before the tape goes back into the cassette) and shuts the machine down. To check this press play and then forward scan and release it and see that as the machine goes back to play mode excess tape is quickly gathered by the pickup spool. If not there is your problem.

There are other things that can cause it such as loss of the tracking pulse but that is more and alignment damaged tape issue.

Stuart S,

Great on fixing the switch issue. Your message is a little confusing however. Heads are not interchangable between VHS and beta machines. JVC to SONY?

It is unlikely that the heads need replacing anyway.

If the C9 plays OK but records a picture with a line, check the surface of the tape for a continuous scratch or wrinkle in the surface of the tape. Such damage prevents the heads from recording an even strength magnetic information on the tape.

In playback of the original recording the deteriation effect is only one separation fromthe heads. With record then playback the effect is for practical purposes double.

cheers Noel

Cheers Noel/Stuart, tracked it down to the micro switch: the lever had got wedged up against the rod instead of being pushed by it! Now just got to figure out why the stereo light doesn't work and find someone who can replace the video heads for less than the machine is worth! Plays back fine but the lovely black streaks appear on Record. Anyone got any views on the JVC heads that are supposedly a replacement (vh2544/PDN33)? Love to get the OEM Sony ones but £125 each is a bit beyond the pale... Never seen head damage like this, the coils have come away from the head itself! Some klutz no doubt...

hey gang

I got the C9 back from the repairers yesterday and hooked it up in the home cinema room, to our Panasonic DMR EZ48 VHS/DVD recorder via RCA cable

My original CIC video tape of Psycho II was the first tape I was going to put directly onto DVDIt ran like a dream for 30 mins and then the playback stopped. just as if I had pushed stop on the machineSo I play it again and it keeps doing it again and again in shorter intervals

So it's going back to the repairersbesides this, I absolutely adore this unitOf course I'm not angry with the repairers as it wasn't doing this at their shop, they fixed servo problems and a jittery picture and gave everything a clean up

Could the following technical issue from the C9 page be the cause"STOPS AFTER A FEW SECONDS" - answer - Check fuse F001 on the SS II panel for open circuit"

if these guys can't fix it then it's going on a trip via Aus post to Mr BetaheavenI really want this unit to work like a charm, just like the Sanyo M10 and for a long time and your the only one I know who has C9 parts.

The heads on this unit are very close to like new. it played back a disney tape justlike glass on our Sony Bravia X Series 46 inch 1080P TV.I have never before in all my years seen a VCR with no tape loading tray. and I love the changing front loading door when a tape is loaded or ejected. two separate loading doors. now thats unique

Even though our old machines can fail on us or do stupid things occassionally, that is half the fun of owning such wonderful retro VCR's. at least for me

Beta - simply betta

Bill,

Given the lack of response by anyone else to you problem I got my SLHF100AS service manual out which in this area should be similar to the UB version. The switch takes 12volt feed and switches it to control the machine to go to tuner or simulcast. So I am tipping you have lost the 12volts before it gets to the switch. It is a switched 12 volt line and comes from the power supply from the SS28 connector CN612 pin 5 via the RL-18 board and out of pin 1 of CN802 which is a 12 pin connector to line or lead 1 of the switch board SW-31 and the common connector of the switch. If all else fails use a jumper wire from the switched 12V of the power supply. If the 12V is present then I can assist you with where it controls which is back in the RL-18 board and the SS-28 board.

I hope that makes sense.

cheers Noel

Buster,

Stuart has suggested the board the fault is likely on the first large one you see with the base on that has the output connectors mounted on it. The connectors have a lot of mechanical leverage on the board and if they are hit or bent in transport or in use the board can break and hence the copper tracks. If this happens you need to mechanically strengthen the board and also clean off the copper cover paint on each side of the break and solder a wire across it. This can affect both centre pins and the earth tracks. Also, over time the solder connections can break so resolder all of these.

It can also be a blown electronic fuse that causes this symptom. They look like a small transistors but only have two legs and are designated NP02 or similar. If you replace them get the same rating number. These fuses of which I think there are three are marked PS1 PS2 and PS3 on the solder side of the board. To check them power the machine up and check for the same voltage appearing both sides of the fuse. Alternatively with the machine unplugged use and ohm meter to show that the fuse resistance is less than 1 ohm. If all else fails, try another board.

cheers Noel

James S,

Stuart is right about the bar at th bottom of the tape load mechanism. Its purpose is to actuate a micro switch located on the load mechanism at the centre of the machine side of the mechanism at the lower edge. This may be out of adjustment or the switch may have become faulty. Try adjusting first if the bar suggestion does not work.

I have yet to send in the 3 Sanyo 5300's that I got for freethey all need new power cords after being hard wired for some reason

These machines are definately not on my favourites list. the picture quality of them from my years of experience with them is by far the worst I've seen of any brand beta machinehowever the M10 and M20's amazingly are far superior and I prefer them over Sony mono machines (not superbeta's) as they don't do that lacing up that sony's do.

My beta want list is now

SLHF 950 SLHF 100 ED BETA (that might be expensive and extremely difficult)SLHF 2100 or 1000 (US models)

I hope bill's issues with AV have been answeredHere's the latest on repairs being done to my recent acquision of machinery

C9

jammed tape was removed, everything cleaned and looking greatthen when I went to pick it up, some servo issues began to appear. the picture would not stay locked. a few buggered caps as well

this has been rectified and according to the repair shop who have been terrific so far, the heads on it are in A1 condition. so this machine will be going into the home cinema room for beta to DVD transfers of my most rarest titles like star video's house that wouldn't die, day the earth moved, phase IV and many roadshow titles from the early 80's

The T9ME multi system has really dirty heads and that will be resolved with new ones possiblyservo and cap issues are common place with old beta's

# 2 C6 heads are too worn for recording purposes but play back very clearlythe tape loading path was way out of alignment

The 2 x C7 's are working like new after both machines heads were severly cleaned to remove years of carbon and dirt buildup

Buster , hf100 av issues..Does the unit display a picture and sound from rf? I am betting it does? If so, the problem is on the bottom yc board which processes the av in and out signals. Replacement is the easiest option and its fairly easy to do. Take off the bottom of the machine and its the board you see on the right with the front of the machine facing you when upside down. You also need to remove the plate around the av sockets to swing the board up and disconnect its wiring looms. If you can get a replacement board just make sure the connections go back in the right places. Its not hard, they are all different colours and sizes so its not easy to get any wrong.

James S, re your c9 not threading...take cover off and with empty cassette bay, look at the floor of the bay. There is a thin metal rod which goes from the centre to the right hand side of the bay. Is it bent at all? If it is it will stop the mechanism from threading. It must be flush with the floor of the bay. If the machine has ever had its loading gears replaced, this rod must be disconnected to remove the carriage, and it is easy to bend.

Hi! I bought a SL-HF100E Betamax (great equipment!)in 1987 and never had a problem 'til now. Lately I was using it to save my oldest beta tapes into DVD but last week when starting the video, I couldn't get ANY SIGNAL neither video or audio from video to DVD (Connections used are BNC Video Out jack and L+R Phono Audio Out jacks). I changed the connection cables but problem remainded. The case is that when video is working, tape spins normally and both display levels are operating. Also, when connecting a headphone in the front panel, the sound can be heard. Would anybody suggest any checkings or direction to help fixing this problem Pls ? Thanks.

Hi again, anyone got any ideas on this one? Just got an SL C9UB, and it all fires up, head spins, display/tuner all ok. It will accept the tape, but it will not thread at all, just starts blinking the eject lamp. If you run the threading spool by hand it will wind in the tape, and if you switch it off then on it unthreads itself perfectly. Any ideas anyone? I can't see anything mechanically wrong, and it's had the replacement loading gears fitted. I'm thinking something electronic maybe?

Pete,

OK, even though the fuse is not blown suspect the power supply is faulty. Replacements cost $300AU when Sony had them but I don't think you can buy them now. Repair usually involves changing caps, transistors, a few diodes and crossing your fingers that there are no shorted turns in the transformer or associated inductors or they will take the whole lot out again.

I repair them by modification but that's not much use to you because your in the UK. Basically the 950 power supply is in two parts. The first AC/DC takes the 240V AC mains and delivers 12 volts at up 3 to 4 amps. The second part is a DC/DC which takes the 12Volts and converts it to all the other voltage that the machine uses.

The first part AC/DC is the part that generally goes wrong. I have developed a fix using switchmode power supplies designed for use with a laptop. I fit them in place of the original inside the machine but you could have the power supply outboard and feed the 12V to the four pin white plug in the centre of the power supply and it should work. If you do the full conversion (internal mod) as I do then you need to have a lead with an earth wire because otherwise the EMC filter current puts the chassis at half mains voltage (120VAC) which might either wake you up or kill you.

cheers Noel (betaheaven.com)

Yet another final plea for any ideas about my SLHF100 problem - its point-blank refusal to switch from AV to tuner or Simul. Noel, you suggested that it might be the switch itself. I think I've probably eliminated that. There is a fix mentioned on this site for the REVERSE problem, refusal to switch from tuner to AV, but not the other way round. I have put in a Freeview box feeding composite video and sound to the machine so I can view and record off-air that way, but I live in the very last area designated for analogue shutdown, having several years before it happens, during which the analogue tuner will still be useable. In all other respects the machine functions very well indeed despite dating from 1984. Any ideas out there please? Yours in hope, Bill

To Damian

regarding your VTC-7800.......I think you will find it to be internally identical to the VTC-9300

I have several owner's manuals as well as several examples of these early Sanyo machines amoungst them is a VTC-5200 VTC-9300PN VTC-9300P virtually all the same!

Where these machines differ is in the RF Converter that slots into the cavity at the back of the unit.........the difference in these being the different tuning frequencies that are required for different countries [i.e.VHF 0-5. 5A-11, UHF 21 - 68 for Australia]

The only difference in the owners manuals are the RF Converter & Converter Output details on the specifications page.

You may discover that the VTC-7800 was produced & marketed by Sanyo for an oversea's market ....Middle East or suchlike!

hey gang. hope you had a great easter break, I certainly did

On Saturday I was invited to the home of the friend of my new VHS repair manHe is willing to do what he can with some of my beta machines also.

anyway this man's father's hobby was amateur television and he had passed away last yearanyhow he had machinery everywhere in his shedfrom reel to reel video, ancient u matic machines, National EIAJ single spool, VHS and of course BETA machinery and video camera's.

there were nearly a hundred machines sitting outside the shed under the carport and I was given an offer to take whatever machines I wantedamazingly he found some SUMMIT, TDK Avilyn and Sony Dynamicron blank tapes that are still shrink wrapped

This is what I loaded carefully into my hilux

AWA Thorn 14 inch colour touchscreen TV

BETAMAX

Sony SL C9 x 1Sony C5 x 1Sony C7 x 2 Sanyo M20 x 1Sanyo 5000 x 1Sanyo 5005 x 1Sanyo 5300 x 3

VHS

National NV7200 top loader National NV7000 top loaderNational NV370 front loaderNational portable VCR. looks like one of them 1980's music boom boxes

I got all these for free. not one cent payed

So I took them home and have so far got both C7 's hooked up to my good Sony C6 and they load and play like a near new machineThe NV7000 and 7200 work quite well

I just got my other C6 which has very worn heads fixed and that is being connected up as well

The Sony C9 is now in the hands of my new repair shop.

The Sanyo 5300's need to have new plugs put on them. the plug was cut off and the machines hard wired somehow.

Videos of my new collection of machinery will be coming onto you tube in a few days

If U matic services cannot repair the C9, the T9ME multi standard machine and any others that I now have, they will be coming the way of BETAHEAVEN

If you need machines for parts, I am happy to donate a few Just give me a month to get plugs for the rest and have them checked out at u matic's

Antonio, the display elements burn out gradually over time, making the display dimmer, however dust also builds up on the inside of the window on the front panel. This dust can easily be removed. First, flick all the switches behind the drop down flap into their lowest position. Then remove the front panel from the machine. The inside of te display panel can then be cleaned as can the actual glass display itself. Replace the front panel taking care to fit it correctly to mesh with the now loose switches on the front panel. Your display, though not dazzling, will be brighter than it was before.

If that doesn't work, you can buy a manual here:http://www.datrecorders.co.uk/pcm2500.php

I think I may still have one of these loading bars with metal gears at home. It was ordered for a SL-2700, however I'm pretty sure it would fit. Let me look for it over the weekend and I'll let you know.

I've found out there is a Metal Cog available to replace the nylon loading gear on the C9,

Anyone got one?

Have a SL-f30 with broken threading ring and end sensor.

Heads are good. Anyone got those two parts or anyone want to offer to buy this machine off me?

Hi all, sorry if this is not new info to anyone but after spending quite a while trying to get a new pinch roller for my c40 I've found that www.4sony.co.uk is still selling them, and also the ones for other machines, and apparently replacement video heads. Just as well really as I managed to knacker my pinch roller assembly by trying to get the roller out! At least the nasty clicking noise was the roller and not the capstan motor as I thought...

Just what is probably a final plea for any ideas about my SLHF100 problem. My original posting (slightly updated): Quite a while ago I sought help with my SLHF100 and its point-blank refusal to switch from AV to tuner or Simul. Noel, you suggested that it might be the switch itself. I think I've probablyeliminated that (nasty little devils to get at and try to test conclusively, aren't they?). There is a fix mentioned on this site for the REVERSE problem, refusal to switch from tuner to AV, but not the other way round.

I've been using a transport-defunct S-VHS machine as a tuner, but it's expiring fast. It was a good machine by S-VHS standards, but it isn't really worth repairing and I don't need it for any other purpose.

To compensate for that I have given the SLHF100 its own Freeview box so I can view and record off-air that way, but I live in the very last area designated for analogue shutdown, and in any case that is no way to treat a good Beta machine!

I am sure you fellow Betaphiles can understand my desire to have the machine functioning as it was originally supposed to. Depending on program content, it sometimes outperforms my SLHF950. In all other respects it functions very well indeed despite dating from 1984. Yes, that's when I bought it and yes, that does make me very old! Any ideas out there? Please, please, please!! Yours in hope, Bill

regarding the VTR button on your C40 - the user manual makes no mention of its functionhowever I have a C40 & a SLHF 100 hooked together & both models have these VTR buttonsand the function of the button on the 100 model allows the bypassing of the VCR from the arriel connections i.e. its all to do with the connection of the VCR to your TV........when the VTR button is pressed in & the light is on the video channel on the tv is active.......A bit hard to explain in writing but thats the function on the 100 but does not function as you say on the C40. .......strange!!!!

Peter,

I dont think changing the video board would help. Anyway the boards can be different between versions (serial numbers) of the C9. Most likely you have a tape path alignment problem and again you need a scope to fix that. Check that the flip up posts aon the load ring re going into their correct positions (in the upper black plastic supporting "Vs" when the tape is loaded and look for any areas where the tape may be folding or rippling as it plays

Thanks Noel,

The tracking problem sure is awkward; you don’t get a quality picture, even at 75% clockwise, (the top of the screen starts to wobble and show interference as there is definitely something wrong in there)! It’s not like normal tracking difference, (that’s expected).

I don’t have a scope, but do have a spare C-9 with defective nylon cog loading, so could you tell me if I should change a PCB maybe, as all the PCBs should be ok.

Thanks for your reply!

Cheers

Hi to all! I will be closing down or selling my video editing and media duplication company after 20 years in business. I will soon be selling off some of my lesser used equipment, so if anyone is interested in some well maintained commercial and prosumer video gear let me hear from you. All inquiries from the USA only, please. I'm located in Portland, Oregon and likely have the original operation manuals and often the original factory shipping cartons for many of the things I'm selling. If you're interested, please send me an e-mail and I will have a list of gear in the near future to send you.

Roderick,

The C7 problem sounds like the traditional rewind problem for which Sony provided an after market upgrade kit. If you have that upgrade kit fitted it replces a white plastic drive gear (located below and sort of between the tape reels) which drives a white "counter" reel with a rubber outside surface. This is the critical wheel/belt to replace. You can check by trying to rewind the tape when the machine is laced up. It will either be slow or not move.

Peter,

There are both control for centering the mechanical and the electrical alignment. Mechanical you dont change unless the heads have been changed. Capaciotrs in the tracking circuit age which actually results in an increased tracking range but off centre. To redo the electrical you need an alignment manual and access to a 2 channel oscilloscope. Unless the tracking is out of range for your tapes and you have easy access to the facilities I mentioned then I suggest you use it the way it is.

Hi all, I have 3 Sony SL-C9 ’s. One has a bit of a problem with the tracking, (I think it has good heads though) - tracking needs to be 75% clockwise to get a picture with a good quality original PRV or L-750. (I am sure I read somewhere you can replace an I.C. that has gone down)? One has had the upper drum sanded and works well, leaving an earlier C9 for spares (early DC-DC converter/nylon loading gear type).

Can anyone advise on a possible internal repair to the tracking problem? :( Cheers!

I have just picked up another C7, in a beautiful condition. But it had some problems unthreading and ejecting tapes. Opened it up, gave it a bit of a clean, found the threading ring very loose and tightened that. Now it will unthread and eject perfectly but has problems loading a tape, strangely enough the same problem my other C7 has.It will start, I can hear the motor buzzing but it needs a gentle push to get started and then it completes fine. I have also noticed that if I move the lever on the left hand side a little, it works fine.Any suggestions how I can fix this?

Barry,

Sounds like two issues. The second first. Not recording could be because the record tab has been punched out of the cassette meaning the machine is operating correctly and not recording over something you wanted to keep. If not then possibly a faulty recodr inhibit swith.

The not lacing problem could be a broken load ring (very bad) or more likely a faulty load gear which is the same design as in the C9. If you remove the top cover it is the large plastic V pulley (gear) driven by the only rubber belt in the machine and it is located just behind the tape when loaded. If you remove it you may find that underside small plastic gear formed of plastic surrounding a brass insert has cracked increasing the tooth gap and jamming the gear enough to make the aging and stretched belt slip. If so, fit a tighter belt and score (scratch) the inside surface of the V pulley to increase tension and see if that works.

cheers Noel

Hi Guys, Those who know me also know that I have only ever “helped” outside this Forum, but on this occasion I am making an exception because I have to find a home for six C7 ’s (one has its cover missing but is otherwise intact and all are ideal for spares/repair.) I’m offering all six FREE to anyone who is willing/able to collect from Northamptonshire England. I’m not prepared to enter into postage or carriage discussions as it’s pick up them all or unfortunately they will go down the local tip before I sell my Brother-In-Law’s house. If you want an independent assessment PM Stuart because he has seen them (and we may have actually fixed one while he was looking at them!) but he was only interested in buying the F1 ’s that were also there. I hope this offer is of interest to someone but I appreciate size, weight and location may be a problem. Just remove the nospam from my email address if you are interested. - They have a history associated with this forum but I’ll explain to anyone interested. Best regards, Ian.

Martin,

Check out the fix at http://www.palsite.com/slc6tech.html The adjustment and componenets are on the board exposed when you remove the base cover.

The capstan servo capacitors if they are still light blue sanyo ones should be replaced as they eventually go high ESR. Then adjust the control as mentioned.

The drum servo control can also be a problem but you do not hear this associted with the sound variations you describe.

cheers Noel
