Roderick & Noel, Thank's for the responds, I think the ACE Head is Ok.. Capstan & Pinch roller either, because the machine produced clear sound (non HIFI machine), and the recording made by this machine, the picture & sound is still perfect by playing with another machine (my SL-C9E )and I'm sorry for the information of trouble that I told before, it's not Blank Video.. there is a picture, but the picture just looks like poor video head, or dirty video head. I can't explaining what kind a picture that is.. (in english actually) if you both can read the trouble from that machine (SL-S660D) by seeing the picture the trouble looks like, can I send you both some attachment (photos) so you can see that from my monitor screen..?

Best regards.

Eddy,

Try cleaning the capstan pinch roller as well as the ACE assembly. Uneven grip on the tape by the capstan can cause the tape to pull up or down affecting either linear sound or tracking performance.

Eddy, Could it be that your ACE head is dirty? I am not familiar with that specific machine but many recorders will blank signal if they don't receive or detect the sync pulse from the tape.Dirty video heads would show a noisy picture, not a blank one. If the audio drops at the same time as the picture, the sync pulse is the most likely culprit.

Gabriel - I'm afraid there IS incompatibility. While in Spain you use PAL B/G like the majority of countries in Europe, the UK uses PAL I, which has a different audio setup. If you try using your machine for off-air recording you will get no sound.

Hi guys - Not here so often now but still doing lots of beta repairs.

Martin, thanks for the continued de-spamming work.

Fangs,

Try cleaning the rubber roller which holds the tape against the capstan during play with alcohol. The surface get dirty and the rubber gets hard over time. You could also clean the surface of the audio heads near the capstan to make sure you get optimum sound level as dirt accumulates on the surface of the heads.

Martin2011,

The sanyo machines have rubber belts and rollers which deteriate even whilst the machine is stored. Best to fit a new set of belts and see how it works then.

Mikael,

The SLHF950s should playback normal sound from any domestic beta tape. Make sure the switches in the front panel are set at the green dot marked setting except switch the Beta HiFi switch from auto to normal. Sometimes the machine gets tricked into staying in HiFi mode when there is no HiFi track there. Normal mode selects the linear audio track manually.

Hello there

I am currently having problems with my Sanyo VTC5150 which I have been using to transfer tapes onto DVD. I finished transfering one tape which was was a bit defective(the sound was wonky all the way through) and since then have been getting sound but no picture when putting tapes in.

Also over the last few days a couple of tapes have been unravelling in the machine. I used the machine for the first time in about a month at the weekend and I temporarily had this problem when I first got the machine so could this be caused by the machine being stored.

If anyone can offer me any help/advice at all it would be most welcomed.

Fangs, the machine has been stored for 18 years and probably just needs a bit of exercise to get started again ;).Try fast forwarding and rewinding a couple of tapes. Also leave it turned on for a day or so.And finally, it could be the tapes if they were all stored at the same spot. See if you can find a tape from another spot to see how that works. Again, the winding / rewinding may help too.

Hi guys,

I am hoping that one / some of you might be able to help me out with some basic advice. I have just been given a Sony C20 Betamax vcr which has been stored by my family in a loft space for about 18 years, along with some home recorded tapes.

When I fired it up it seems to power up fine. However, when I play the tapes there is a little screen disturbance and also the sound is distorted, almost as if slowing down a little although one does not get that impression from the viewing the video. I have tried several tapes & get the same effect with all of them. The machine was working fine when it was originally stored. Could anyone give me some pointers as to how to fix this myself? Is this likley to mean attempting to clean the parts inside? If so wher do I start? I did try looking at the fault finding page for this model but could not see anything that was really representative of the problem.

Grateful for any help at all. Thanks. Fangs.

Cheers Martin for the de spamming.A shame this site get's regularly disrupted by such nonsense.

Kire:

Be very carefull with the heavy pushing for the tape insertion on the later Sony's the plastic gears to the side are known for cracking and causing tape insertion issues. The left hand lever arm cog is usually the one that cracks. There is also a lever switch that closes as you push a tape inside to activate the motor mechanisms. It may need checking out.

Send me your e-mail address privatley and i'll PDF/e-mail the relevant pages over to you.

I've got a Sanyo VTC 9300 that makes a weird screeching noise during any operation it performs.

It's coming from the dark, round cylinder that seems to be in sync with the head drum (they spin and stop at the same time).

Is this an easy/cheap fix for a novice, or shall I just stick it on eBay for parts?

I made a video of the problem happening here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRQwkraCBH8

Betamark,

That problem usually happens when the RHS gear/wheel cannot drive the load ring off its home position to thread the tape around the heads. Belt replacement is a pain but be careful to get the lever underneath the assembly back into the right position.

Bill - My HF950 widescreen recordings do switch the TV to 16:9 on playback. I just purchased an Akura AVX665 HD freeview box from Makro for £15 plus vat. You will not be able to use the RGB out from the scart, but it will give you basic AV at least. You will also get the four HD channels if your area has them. These will of course be downscaled via the scart but will still result in a noticeably better picture even on a CRT TV.

The box works well has one scart output, comes with a HDMI and scart lead. Has low power standby, now and next, channel sort and does not run hot. It does not have a timer so that may be a problem for you.

They also have an LG DRT389H freeview recorder for £89 plus vat. This is also a very good machine that you should consider

Hi Noel (and anyone else who's interested),

An update - I had it fixed in my mind that our local analogue switch-off wasn't happening until next year, but my partner has reminded me that it in fact will happen this July! We'll be on holiday in July, and it kinda messes up my plans for recording stuff while we're away!

So I'll perforce be using my SLHF950 and shortly my SLHF100 with terrestrial digital tuners full-time very soon. I'll report on how it goes, how they deal with widescreen etc. To the best of my knowledge no-one has as yet produced a FreeView (UK terrestrial digital) tuner with VCR-style timing and channel changing functions. At least in Europe TV sets are increasingly being sold with internal FreeView tuners, but that doesn't help much with recording.

It means having to leave a tuner connected and switched on for each machine you want to record with, and getting only one channel per machine. The three tuners I already have work very well, but they run VERY hot, and I would not be at all happy about leaving them switched on and unattended for very long. I'm still one tuner short of full coverage, so if anyone in the UK has come across a reasonably priced FreeView box which runs nice and cool, please let me know. You'll be helping to preserve my SLHF950 !

Looking on the bright side, it will enable me to leave my SLHF950ES permanently set to mainland European tuner VHF/UHF configuration in case good DX conditions turn up.

Hi Kevin

The machine handles Sony tapes fine once the Agfa 'freeze' frees itself. FF/REW/PLAY all OK. Only Agfa Betacam tapes cause problems with the tape transport. That might eliminate head drum problems I think. I have tried adjusting Tension (RV-002 on SS-29 board) while running tape but to no effect. Meanwhile quality of video and normal sound is excellent. Pinch roller and threading belt cleaned and seem OK for now but will probably need replacing soon but where to go for parts?

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Could you recommend anyone whom I could send this machine to for repair/overhaul? I'm an engineer but don't have access to Sony test and alignment tapes.

Thanks for your help

Hi Nigel

I've worked on one of those. It sounds like you have a high back tension or worn upper drum.(slow FF/REW).I would go with the back/forward tension needing checking out. This would explain the lack of sound at the beginning ,returning near the middle. It could also be a rogue guide or pinch roller issues too.Really hard to say for sure when not seeing the vcr.You would need the Sony alignmnet tapes and forward torque one too.Hope this helps................Kevin

Sony SLO-1700. 1st problem: no AFM sound at start of tape but LNG & video OK. AFM sound then comes on about half way through tape and runs fine. Rewinding to the start the AFM sound sometimes works sometimes not. Heads and guides cleaned. 2nd problem: using Agfa betacam tapes (BTC5 & BTC10) playback gradually seizes up then stops. REW, FF & PLAY do not work. Manually moving Tension Pick-Up Assembly/Guide#1 seems to get the tape moving. Thanks for any help. All the best

Hi Noel,

Nicam seemed wonderful when it started here in the late 80s, but the years have revealed shortcomings. It's now pretty academic as it will die with terrestrial analogue TV broadcasting. I have to say that my partner and I use analogue very little these days, most of our viewing is from Sky satellite, where the sound quality can be very good or absolutely atrocious depending on its origin. I like West African music, but the only channel which features it is next to unuseable.

I haven't done much experimenting with digital terrestrial, but I've now given my SLHF950 its own quite cheap DVB tuner, and I'll see how it works out. Kevin has agreed to work his magic on a problem with my SLHF100, and when it's sorted out I'll give it a tuner as well. While analogue switch-off will cause some problems, you can also see it as a new chance to use the excellent stereo our Hi-Fi machines are capable of for recording off-air.

Seemingly when analogue is switched off here we face a 10db increase in signal strength compared with the present level of digital transmission. As our local signal strength is perfectly adequate now, I might be getting into attenuator territory!

All the best, Bill

Hi Noel,

Hope this isn't going too far off topic, just out of curiosity. How does your FM TV sound cope with Dolby sources, film etc? My very new Sony AV amp is supposed to put out to headphones an unprocessed 2ch stereo signal whatever the source, including Nicam. Sure as hell it doesn't. From a Nicam broadcast or recording you get dreadfully jumpy Dolby sound CONSTANTLY cutting out background and bringing up foreground. Sometimes it gets just too bad to listen to. I've tried everything on the Sony so it may not be its fault. It's pretty much OK on most of its (too many) other signal options. Being truly separate, can your system do better? I use headphones a lot because of neighbours. I got the habit when I lived in a terraced house originally put up to accommodate workers building Tilbury Docks about a hundred years ago and having walls kept up by the wallpaper!

Totally off topic - as you probably know Tilbury brings quite a lot of traffic between the UK and your neck of the woods, and at that time I lived only about three miles from Tilbury Docks. Now we certainly don't have any native scorpions, so I was quite surprised to find a very large black one on my garden wall! I left it to its own devices. Does Australia harbour any scorpions? I know you harbour some nasty insects - a relative of mine who lived in Melbourne told me more than I really wanted to know about your funnel-web spider!

All the best, Bill

Ann, if the video heads are ok then they probably just need cleaned. I know lots of people don't like them but ahead cleaning tape does a good job as long as it's not done too often. Good luck ---Charlie

Noel,Thanks a lot for your help. However, I´ve been trying cleaning the heads on purpose (the ACE one) with no results. With an ohmmeter, readings can be made between pins so I guess the windings should be OK. I was having a look to a dead SL-C30 I have for spares (just looking for a head swap), but mechanically they are completely different.About misalignment, is there any way to proceed without having an oscilloscope nor an alignment tape?

Hi Noel,

Thanks, that's what I was hoping for. The digital fraternity quite often claim to have invented autosensing, but Beta was way ahead of them. Re PAL, it's just that I wish the inventor of PAL I could be brought to justice!

Mikael H,

Check out this German website. http://www.sps-wagner.de/Betamax/vergleichsbilder.html

The author describes how to convert an SLHF950 to give S-video output. Lots of technical information as well. (In German however)The standard SLHF950 Scart only provides normal video and stereo in and out connections.

Good luck with getting an manual. They are large and don't scan well. You do see them in hardcopy from time to time on eBay.

Doea anyone know if the Scart outlet of a SL-HF950 can translate into composite or S-video? Also, does anyone know where to get an owners manual for less than the $50 that "manuals-in-pdf" want?

Gabriel,

The tracking heads do not often fail in my experience. The only check you can really do is ohms continuity for the head windings. More likely the head has dirt on its surface stopping the tape from contacting the head surface sufficiently to produce a tracking pulse or the tape path is out or alignment, meaning the head is not overlapping the right part of the tape edge.

Bill,

The unit senses the presence of the twin stereo carriers and switches to stereo reception automatically. You will have to google who invented PAL, I cant help you there.

Hi everyone. Congratulations for this site, it really helps. Ok, my problem is as follows: I own a Sony Betamax Sl-HF950 and it plays, rewinds, ffwds well (mechanically). When it is in play mode, there is no image. If pause is pressed, there is a still picture on screen. When Rew or Ffwd is pressed (during play), you can see the image moving fast. The tape counter never works.I guess the ACE head is faulty, but no clue how to check that component. I have it disassembled and desoldered so I can measure it with a multimeter.

Any idea? Thanks in advance.

Hi Noel,

Sorry to pester you again, but I'm not at all clear on how actually to access the SLHF950ES FM stereo tuner, assuming it does exist. I've assumed rightly or wrongly that if you switch to the VHF and Euro UHF settings you automatically get Pal B/G as in every country in western Europe EXCEPT Germany - and the UK. Who invented Pal I and why? It didn't exactly catch on in the rest of the world, can't offhand think of anywhere except South Africa! Do you think the SLHF950ES would autosense an FM signal like my Loewe TV must have done when picking up a German UHF signal rather than mono or Nicam from Holland and Belgium and France (when they eventually adopted Nicam). It most definitely received German 2 channels, but there was no provision for setting the tuner to FM manually.

Of course it's very difficult to test anything without a constantly available German TV signal. Can you think of any method?

Regards, Bill

Hi, I Have a Sony sl 3000ub with a playback problem, The problem is it will play fine for about an hour or so then the picture starts to wobble, the belts are like new, i have read that it could be the TANTALUM capacitors on the servo circuit board. Could anyone advise me as to where these are located or any advice on repairing this problem.

Many Thanks Nigel.

Hi Noel,

Thanks, that's very good news. Since my SLHF950ES is unquestionably a German model, that means it must have FM stereo. Now all I have to do is wait - and hope - that the ionosphere might be nice to me again! Fading high pressure centred somewhere around Denmark is the magic meteorological formula, I haven't a clue why.

All the best, Bill

Bill,

I don't know about the UK model. The German model certainly did have a stereo tuner.

In Australia we have stereo on analogue TV VHF and UHF bands. Analogue switch-off is happening here as well eventually.
