Good day gentlemenI have two complete Sanyo systems on offer if there is anyone interested. VPR5800 X 2 - recorderVPA5800 X 2 - adaptorVTT5800 X 2 - tunerAnd the camera VSC5800, plus the remote. All instruction books included. My dad bought two systems - one each for my brother and myself, plus a camera to share.I've had them for 7/8 years in boxes in a wardrobe. All working ok when consigned to spare room.I'm in Hampshire. Is anyone interested?
James
With determination and care.I have never worked on one but if the c6 is anything to go by some are trickier than others.
................Kevin
Hi again :)
I am just wondering how does one replace the belts for tape laceing mech on a Sony SL-C7?
James
Hi Bjorn
Well we will be sad to see you go.
Indeed repairs and service work for a lot of older electronic items is drying up fast now. It's just as well i still enjoy doing this and the great satisfaction seeing a lot get to superb shape again. Not too mention those who really appreciate what still can be done for these now.
...................Kevin
Good Evening, Sad to say, after over 20 years working with the format. It is regrettable to announce that as of 30July 2012. I will no longer be supporting the Beta format. This is mainly due personal circumstances which mean that I will no longer be able to accept machines for service and repair. I wish to thank all on this site for their support over the years in diagnosing some of the more tricky and stubborn problems, and for helpful posts and assistance in locating parts as more and more suppliers stop doing them. It has been a while since my last post, but thanks for your support with this format.
Bjorn Hodges [email protected]
James:
I think it was an error.I've seen some eyebrow raising model numbers stated on e-Bay a few times :0Sony 5000, Sanyo c30, e.t.c.Some models pictures are not even of the actual vcr.
.......Kev
Sony 5150? I thought it would be a Sanyo VTC-5150.
James
Hi Anthony.
It sounds like your vcr could do with a good service. Most that people buy now are untouched for years and no doubt were used a lot before being stored in this condition. They get brought out and sold and hence don't work too good. The reel drive parts will need replacing and probably more to make sure this classic vcr is working well for a good few more years yet.So much more than just putting new belts in i here so many stating who don't really know what goes on inside these vcr's.Give us a shout id you need it looking at.
..................Kevin
Hi I have a sony 5150 that plays fine for a while then stops, i press the stop button and play then it plays ok again. Can anyone suggest what the problem is and if there is a part i can replace as i have another which has bad heads any help would be appreciated not for resale but to watch some old betas i haveThanx
Hi Noel:
A good and fair point although i've seen that one three or four M40 's and no M30's as of yet..The M50 being the illusive PAL model only for Australia and New Zealand for some reason.I too repair them and it is indeed tricky but not impossible.I think Sanyo made a mistake to utilise those tracking devices.Especially when compered to the bullet proof ones used on the other models.
................Kevin
Kevin,
Informative as usual. One thing you didn't mention that I have noticed is that most of the VTC-M30s M40s and M50s I see have failed tracking potentiometers. It seems that the plastic tabs which hold the wiper just break off with age. They can be pulled apart and repaired though it is tricky. I have mostly had to make up replacements using trim pots.
cheers Noel
Hi Alex:
To be honest, although the Sanyo 9300 is built like a tank and still going good for some,it's a bit old hat now.Not to mention damned heavy.I own the entire Sanyo range in superb working and cosmetic condition form their venerable and extremely popular VTC5000. In my view this model and their range after wards , consisting of 5000mk2, 6500,M10,M20,M30 ,M40 (beta hi-Fi) and NX100 are all decent performers, extremely reliable and easy to work on ( even more so if you are working on them all the time as i do).Rubber components will need changing after three or four years if used a lot to keep them in 100% reliable condition.Picture quality wise the 6500 is a superb and underrated Sanyo beta, for an 83 model. It's also quite feature packed for the time. The 5000 is a close runner too.The 5150 has a different picture quality with slightly more detail than the 5000.The M10 and M20 are a softer picture but fantastically reliable beta model. They are also ideal for tapes which have high wear too them.Providing a nice clear smooth quality. The m30 is similar but has three heads for perfect slow motion and still frame.it may be a tiny bit sharper in quality too.the M40 has a higher bandwidth so more detail but this can be a curse if using tapes with high wear or noise.the newer the tapes the better results for all.It also has the superb beta hi-Fi sound too.Lastly is Sanyo's final UK Budget beta the VTC NX100 which has yet again a different picture quality. It has more detail than the 'm' series models and only a 2.2 bandwidth ( compared to the M40 's 2.8), but of the many i've brought to perfection all have been delighted with it.
There is also the Sanyo VTC 5300 and 5400 models , which are OK and belt ridden ,over their later models. The 5300 has NO picture search facility and they both keep the tape laced for the FF and REW functions ,as does the 9300 ,so that may be a disadvantage.
Also note if using a Freeview or satellite box to record from on these the results are far superior than using their old analogue built in tuners.
Parts for the Sanyo VTC 5000 (1982) and onwards are easier to source than the earlier models too.
Hope this helps?
Gabriel:
No problem , please keep me informed of your findings.
.................Kevin
Hi James,
The trimpot in mine had developed an open circuit on a section of it. So I opted for replacement. Was only like 50 cents so it's not very costly. Slight improvement. But I forgot that a portion of my tapes are Super Beta, reason why the colour was stronger. I have also replaced the electrolytics in that portion of W2. Sanyo's last top loading models are their best in my opinion.
Brendan
I was intrested in making a start in Betamax and was wondering your views on the Sanyo VTC 9300 Betacord VCR was
Kevin,
Thanks a lot for your valuable info, I'm going to proceed as you have suggested. It seems to be a "safe mode", but let's investigate the reason. In a couple days I will be fidling the machine again.
Regards, Gabriel.
Kevin, Yeah I doubt the picture will get much better; I might change out some of the caps on the W2 board to see if it helps.
Brendan, Maybe give VR 214 (And others) a clean with contact cleaner or Isopropyl Alcohol before replacing it?
James
Gabriel:
One other thought.Does the capstan turn just before the machine stops in play?If the capstan does'nt turn it won't play either.Ideally if you had a TDK or Kodak beta tape you can see both spools in the operation mode. That too would tell you better if it's down to the reel drive/idler.
.........Kevin
Hi James,
I have 2 Sanyo VTC 9300s. The other one which has had no issues does have a better picture than the one that lost colour. Therefore I've decided to replace VR 214. I'll let you know about the results.
Brendan
Hi James:
I've just looked at the playback you posted and it looks great.I would'nt expect perfection there from such an old and value orienated machine. The one i repaired was shimmery with the colors too.You may have to turn the color on your LCD down a tad....................Kevin
Hi Gabriel.
It sounds to me like the take up reel is'nt turning (or the top idler is slipping).FF and REW are done by the bottom idler, hence the OK functions there. The vcr is designed so, if it sense no take up spool rotation, it will safely stop the machine to avoid tape damage.
......................Kevin
Hello again Betaphiles,
This time, I have a Sanyo VTC-M10 with strange behaviour. It accepts properly the tape, threading, FFWD and REW are OK. When pressing PB, the reel motor starts to spin, but only for less than a second. Then stops and the machine remains dead until one presses eject or "restart" it. I have checked the switches and they are fine. Any clue to this? I have never seen a Sanyo with this issue.
As always, thanks in advance.
Hi all,
Here is the video of my Sanyo VTC-9300 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMa7dGRFjys
Far from perfect but much better than it was before.Sorry about the feeback noise I have no idea what is causeing that as it was doing it even when the VCR was not running.
James
Kevin,
Yeah I asked what is wtong with it, but did not think ask if anything was touched or removed, looks like I have to live and learn.
James
James:
Oh.One thing i've learned from experience with dealing on e-bay is always ask if anything is broken/damaged or missing and has the item been fiddled with. That way if they state no and it has you could make a claim back. There are quite a few or knowingly try to fleece people out of hard earned monies. Some just hav'nt a clue about such things.Always best to ask first. That way you get no unexpected surprises.
...............Kevin
Kevin,
It was listed as not working for parts or fix, but there was no mention that anything was missing.
It is not beyond repair provideing I can get parts for it.
James
I have and old 1983 Betamax VRC 100P working condition I want to know what it is worth
I am currently looking for a BVH 3100 PAL machine.
Please let me know if you have anything available.
Kind RegardsChris
Hi James:
Did it not mention this in the description.Or did it say 'spares'repairs?
Brendan:
No problem, congrats on the fix.
Martin:
If you want your M10 in tip top shape give us a shout.I don't have any spare flaps though, for the timer controls.
...................Kevin
I have to be more careful when buying from eBay, the TOSHIBA V-8600 I got was missing the video drum assembly and the power supply is dead and case is broken :(
James
Hi Kevin
Misprint by me. It was IC204. Replacing it did little difference. However a slight adjustment of VR214 returned it to full colour.
Brendan
Hello again I mentioned earlier as I was planning to put in a last minute bid on the one on there, I have a VTC M10 sanyo which I bought some time ago watched some old family holiday videos etc and then having put it away its display has gone and the flap is missing I have noticed too that it has blurry picture, i did think if i bought the one on ebay at the minute i could maybe put my belts into it and have a good looking machine to display with my other techy bits would it be viable to put in a last minute bid and if so how much would you guys reckon I'd probably put a bid of around 60-70 on it and then dump mine afterwards

Hi Martin
What model is the Sanyo you have with faults?
I have loads of experience with these classic.Yours could be easily sorted as i have many spares and regularly repair and refurbish these to 110%.Knowone i know of does more than myself, a bold claim but i have been sent some to sort that have been elsewhere for top monies for overhauls and to say i'm shocked at the lack of work done is an understatement.
.............Kevin
Hi James:
I have never seen in person the Toshiba 8600 but i would avoid the Toshiba 9600,a truly awfull designed beta and the picture is pretty dire too.The V31b provides far superior results but is know for head failure more prematurely than most.
.....................Kevin
Hi Brendan:
The IC you changed in the Sanyo 9300 should be 204 (not 104).Another IC responsible for no colour is IC 205 (CX-137A).Also transistor Q244 (2sc930e) can be responsible too.
The part no for the Sony /Sanyo /Toshiba utilised hall effect sensors is A6090130.
Good luck guys....................Kevin
Hi all,
Even though I now have colour again on the VTC 9300 there seem to be a red Silhouette around red objects and people's skin, most times the silhouette is more on the right.Would anyone know what might be the cause of the?
I might have to put a video on Youtube to show what I mean.
Kind Regards,James
james
yes the head drum works, the tape wraps around it then just stops.not opened the bottom ,did'ent know you could, will have a look.
betamark
I will be getting the TOSHIBA V-8600 next week, I paid $20 AUD.I am not sure if it is fully working.
James
james the toshiba was considered a good machine but whether belts or heads can be obtained if needed is going to be a factor to consider but the 8600 is supposed to have features /freeze,frame ,frame advance good still picture it was well commented on in the reviews of its day ,i have not actually come across one but it may be a bargain if the price is good
hi everyone ,i recently took apart a C9 i bought ,recently i emailed colin Mcormick who informed me that the hall I.Cs used on the C9, reel motors could be removed and used on the drum ,motor i looked at them and found that the reel motor I.Cs have 3 leads, and the ones one the Drum Stator ,have 4 ,leads obviously this means that they cannot be interchanged ,i am informed by the Audio,Center, that Sony,s answer is replace the stator assembley ,as the hall,I.Cs cannot be bought on there own and do not have any markings to identify them or a part number, sureley somebody has been able to identify them or to suggest a alternative if they can be identified then maybe a alternative could be found .
Hello everyone,
Does anyone have any pointers on correcting a loss of colour in a Sony SL-HF77? B/W picture is still great, as is beta hi fi reproduction.
Cheers,Brendan
Thanks Brendan that did the trick.
Good news, the VTC - 9300 colour fault has been repaired. After adjusting AFC(VR 214), the colour returned. So James, you could try that before replacing anything. If that does not work, replace Q204 and surrounding electrolytic capacitors.
Cheers,Brendan
Hi everyone,
Replaced Q104(CX-150B) in the VTC 9300. Has made an improvement. But still not in full colour. Which is the next most likely chip to fail causing colour issues?
Cheers,Brendan
Mark, Did you open the bottom and inspect the belts? If the motors are working you should hear them trying to load and play the tape, does the head drum motor appear to be working? There are many things that can go wrong and I do not know that machine. best to check the basics like belts and drive gears etc. James

hi james opened it up last night and i put a tape in and pressed play, the tape went around the drum then just stopped.any ideas what is up with it? dont think its the belts now.
thanks mark
BetaMark,
I would take it apart to inspect the belts and you can also check how it is loading while it is open.

Am in the states, but am interested in references to interested parties.ThanksBrian
k lambert i think its the belts because when i put a tape in it just makes a kind of clunck noise and nothing happens.any ideas would be help full
Hi Betamark:
The only thing i can suggest now is to remove each belt.Measure the thickness and whether square type or flat. Then measure the inner and outer circumference and diameter. You can still get many belt seperately. The days of the collective model type packed together may be over or more difficult to obtain.
...............Kevin
hi again does anyone have any internal TOSHIBA V-5470B belts,or know were i can buy some.thanks
Hello all,
I have a pair of SL-C7s going spare. One is in pretty good condition (belts seem good too) but needs the mechanism getting back into sync; the other has been dismantled sometime in the past and is not in too good nick due to poor storage, but is probably ok electronically.
Both machines have suffered from the infamous clock setting buttons.
If they weren't so big I'd keep one and use it, but it won't fit on the shelf!
I'm looking for around £20 ono for the pair, collection if possible from Crawley/Gatwick, or delivery within a reasonable distance for the petrol money.
rgdsLAurence
Hi Kevin,
I ordered it from a local electronics supplier. I didn't think they'd still be available, so it surprised me that they could get them.
Brendan
Hi Brendan:
No problem.
Where did you order the CX150 from for another guy with the same problem? It did sort out that issue.I managed to get one a year or so ago but am having difficulty now.
Thanks.............Kevin
Thanks for that Brendan.
Good that you found that IC.
James
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the advice. The circuit board and tracks are intact. I have also determined the IC and the transistors in the audio block are fine. So I suspect the electrolytic capacitors need to be replaced.
And James, my VTC - 9300 also plays in B&W. With colour returning intermittently. I've ordered a CX-150 IC and I'll post on here if that corrects the issue.
Cheers,Brendan
Hi all,
With the help from Noel Higgins with parts I now have the old Sony SL-C6 working.
You can check it out on my Youtube channel here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap7xjP4UDdM
James
Hi Brendan:
Check for cracks to the top circuit board. The audio part is the area at the back center (where it hinges). It's lined off with a white square.I've seen this with an M20 once too.
Tony:
I've replied to you via e-mail.
................Kevin
hi does anyone have any TOSHIBA V-5470B belts,or know were i can buy some.thanks
I'm looking for someone to service my Sanyo VTC-5000 machines here in England. Is there anyone out there who will do this for a reasonable cost? Please email me: tony(at)tonywade.com...Thanks.
Ronny, probably a good idea to let people know where you are. These machines are heavy and shipping could be prohibitive.
Ok thanks Kevin..
Hi Bill:
Nice to here from you.Hope things are going well for you.
James:
I am about to put in an enquiry about those IC's i mentioned for your Sanyo 9300.
......................Kevin
Hi all,
In regards to my Sanyo VTC-9300 again, most of the noise on the picture is due to my plasma TV, still plays in B&W though. So I will need to source some parts for this old beast.
James
Hi Kevin,
It would be really nice to hear from you. Being inactive, I don't look at the page very often these days.
All the best,Bill
Linda,
Also if you already have the scart plug to rca, then you would only need the BNC plug.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BNC-Plug-To-Phono-FEMALE-Socket-Adaptor-4-Pack-BARGAIN-/170762029343?pt=UK_CCTV&hash=item27c235c91f
James
Linda,
There is absolutely no problem connecting your television to your betamax. I am surprised that the 'installers' couldn't work it out.All you need it one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCART-ADAPTER-CABLE-SCART-PLUG-TO-2x-BNC-PLUG-4x-PHONO-CINCH-PLUG-1-5-BLACK-/180852783218?pt=UK_Computing_Sound_Vision_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2a1baa7872
(This is just as an example, you may find the same in a local shop)Scart in the back of the telly, the other end for your betamax.Too simple really.
Linda,
If the TV you have is at http://www.tesco.com/direct/toshiba-32dl933-32-inch-widescreen-hd-ready-led-backlit-tvdvd-combi-with-freeview/498-8108.prdthen it says it has a scart socket which I would assume is an input. You need a scart plug to rca leads to connect your beta to that TV.
The other alternative is if you have a cinema amplifier that does up conversion of composite video inputs to HDMI out.
regards Noel
I have a working Betamax VTC M20 machine and lots of tapes. I've just bought a new Toshiba 824 33025 32DL933 32 flat screen tv. I was assured before delivery (and expensive installation) that the installers would be able to link the two, but now, having taken the money, they say they cannot effect the link and say that they 'will get back to me'. I'm hoping they will, but, in the meantime, if anyone can say categorically that this can be done, and, best of all, offer some hints as to how, it will help me to apply pressure to them to fulfil their obligations. Any help gratefully received. Many thanks. Linda
Ultravixen,
Use and old machine to run the tape through and loosen the mould, then do a transfer to DVD.
That seems to work unless the tape is actually moist as well. It needs to be dry.
regards Noel
Has anyone successfully managed to clean an old tape of white mould?
I've heard some people saying to just FF and REW through the tape, but surely the spores would just get blown around your machine?
Any other tips?
Well I have fixed most things on this old Sony SL-C6 apart from the problem with the audio cutting out, I am going to replace the electrolytic capacitors in the CTL AMP section of the SS-9 board to see if that fixes it, after that I will be looking at the AD-^ baord.
James
Hi all, I am still looking for a SS-9 board for the Sony SL-C6AS or the SL-C6UB. .
James
sony SL-F1UB. I am still trying to find data for my SONY SL-F1UB, also I need the wiring diagram for the 12V i/p socket (the 5 pin one at the back of the unit)as I wish to run my machine without the tuner connected. Any help appreciated! I checked output from 12 volt supply with meter to indicate which is the correct pin to connect live to. I can check again soon as possible. Also now have the service manual somewhere.? Peter
posted message and caption came on screen web page cannot be found. Please let me know if message went through regards hall sensor from Kevin. Peter
Please ask Kevin to send me the long awaited hall sensor for my betamax sl100 Years ticking by, and getting old now like the machine. Hope to see it working again soon. Peter
I have a beta tape that was used with a digital audio processor to producr a Digital Audio taoe. I have tried to play this back using the same type of equipment (a Beta deck and an audio processor) but the beta deck is NTSC and the tape was recorded in Australia which used PAL. I am looking for a place that can transfer this audio to CD
ARE YOU A SHOP

Hi James
are you sure its not that ACE heads thats worn out / contaminated?
If the servo system fails to pick up the control pulses on the tape, it starts to loose sync. I replace all the Sanyo crap with new good ones. And i use tantalum capacitors on the low values.
Its good common practice to undo the whole Headblock and tilt it upwards so you can see the whole head assembly. For cleaning i recommend using metal polish (Like Autosol Yes that stuff works)
Clean out the headblock with methanol afterwards.
Also remove the whole capstan flywheel and pull it out checking for tape residue ridges. replace the belt as well, it will be slack. Clean pulley as well. You might need to adjust the ACE head slightly to a prerecorded tape, for max treble response.
The SL-C6 is VERY easy to work on, and 1 of my favorite machine. Love those "KLONK" sounds, and i got 2 in good working order.
If you need further assistance, feel free to shoot me a mail.
Kind regards
Emil Jensen
Hi again,
Just checking to see if anyone has a good working SS-9 board that works with the Sony SL-C6AS, I think the one from the SL-C6UB would work as well.
James
I have put my spare TT-F1AS on Ebay.http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-TT-F1AS-TV-Tuner-/290725870253?pt=AU_Electronics_Vintage_Electronics&hash=item43b09cbaadGreat addition to any SL-F1 !
Hi again,
Not having much luck with this Sony SL-C6. I changed a number of capacitors on the ss-9 board which helped, but there is still an issue with the capstan lock I think. Because when you adjust RV1 and RV9 and get it stable it then drifts off and you have to adjust it again, maybe I have to replace more capacitors or could there be an issue with the power supply or something else?
Also the audio goes off and does not come back until you switch it off for an hour or soWould it be wise to replace the capacitors on the AD6 board?
I might have to give up on this for now, even though I would like to get it running.
Thanks,James
Hello James,
Thanks for the link, i haven't seen this page yet.
i managed to find the operaters manual and service manual of the C9 !

missing leads from my sony betamax sl-hf100 ub how do i connect to a lcd tv do i need some kind of adaptor and where would i get same thanks
Hello everyone!i'm new in the Betamax world, and i have some questions.Tuesday i bought 2 Sony Betamax players at a thriftstore.i'm verry happy to say that one of them is a SL-HF950 !!!this one seems to work, but i haven't tried to record with it yet due to the lack of haveing good quality tapes.unfortunatly the remote is missing and the nice red stickers are gone to :-(can any one here tell me where to find a free manual of this machine?
i also bought a SL-C9 but this one doesn't work anymore (display isn't working, and the machine doen't take the cassette in.the eject light is flashing and it keeps making a rumbling noise.
can any one give me some advice?
greetings from the Netherlands,
Danny
Thank you very much for all your help Kevin,
It seems the SS-9 board has been messed around with as it seems to have the wrong capacitors which C7 and C8 seem to have two capacitors on each which appear to be at 0.47uF, so I was wondering if anyone knows where I can located a service manual for the Sony SL-C6AS or the SL-C6UB or that someone may know the correct values and locations for these capacitors?
Thanks in advance.
James
Hi James
Yes they are tantalum ones but electrolytics are fine.Change ALL the small light blue ones ion that board and any more minature ones too.I've done this on three or fur C6 's and then a tiny tweak to the head drum preset and then it should be fine.Yes they should only have one cap for each point.0.22 for those sounds right. The C6 's are renound for those issues.
.....................Kev
Thanks for the info Kevin.
It seems the servo maybe the cause of audio problems, As capstan free-run speed is eratic and the voltage at TP5 is not stable. Also there is drum speed variation. What I found odd there is two electrolytic capacitors (Are they electrolytic?) on both C7 and C8, as far as I know there should only be one on each of thesethat should be at .22uf?
Regards,James
James
AD6 is the board.it's the one that flps over the video head drum. You can remove it but removing two (or four) screws and unplugging two wires.
Good luck....................Kevin
Thanks Kevin :)
Is that he ADG panel? Sorry for asking so much just trying to work out what everything is on this machine.
Would be good if I could find a service manual for this machine...
James
Hi James
The audio board for that model is the rectangular one that hinges back over the head drum.there may be a bad cap or leaky Transistor?Dry joint even.
.....................Kevin
Kevin,
All heads were cleaned and appear to be ok.
I adjusted RV1 (I could not find RV001) and the drum speed RV9 which helped with the picture. The video was running for an hour with no major problems (Apart from needing electrolytic capacitors?) Then it suddenly lost the audio, so I stopped the tape to find there still audio on the tuner side of things.
I turned off the VCR for an hour or so while I had some dinner, I came back and started up the VCR and ran a tape to find the audio was back. When the audio works it works well. I think there is a component that is worn and when gets warm the audio cuts out.
Can this mean a problem with the SS-9 board and is the SS-9 the servo board or is that is another spot?
James
Hi James
I've just had the same problem from one i've just worked on.It was playing back fine but recordings were missing their control track pulse. It depends what end of the head is contaminated. It turned out to be a dirty audio head.Sometimes the head azimuth needs a very tiny adjustment too to make the treble more clear.Best doing that with an alignment tape though to make sure it's compatible with all other vcr's playback. It could've been the IC but seeing as it's playing back through the tuner part OK it's not very likely.
