Hi All, my Sl-HF100 has started playing up and I suspect the power supply and Timer board to be abit dodgey, it would help if anyone had a parts machine to offer, say one with mechanical problems that I could use, it would be nice also to have a top cover with the blue label, my top has had it removed, if you could help please don't hesitate to message me,

ThanksAlex (UK)

I purchased a Sony Hifi Betamax SL HF860d. An awesome machine but it has some problems. When I load a tape (with the cover off)and press play the tape on the right hand side (facing the machine) bunches up and ultimately jams. Most forums say it could be the pinch roller. But the pinch roller works smooth and spins freely and when I manually put tension on it and press play the problem still occurs. Any other ideas? I can send pictures of the problem.

Hi, I just got out my SL-C5 UB (kept clean and dry in a cupboard) which probably has not been used for 10 years, but previously worked 100%. Sound is great, but the picture on all tapes I tried is wobbly or shakey, although complete with no break up. It is the same on both RF and Video out. Has anyone any ideas? Is it due to the missing analogue TV signal upseting synchronisation? Is there a small adjustment needed? Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,

I have a Sony Betamax similar to this :

http://www.jonathanen.com/pages/Bedroom/VCRs/Sony/Betamax/SL-800ME/SL800ME1a.jpg

I do not know what type of cables I should use to output the video to the tv. In the back, there are to types of output : one looks like the old antenna output, and the other one is called "Multi Output".

Can you please guide me in what cable I should buy in order to get this work.

Thanks

I have a box of 20 or more BETAMAX Cassettes that contain TISWAS and OTT episodes recorded back in 1981 / 1982 they are all in good condition and would be good for a collector. I have them transfered to DVD so no longer need the cassettes and they are taking up space if anyone like to make an offer. I may post but buyer would have to pay all postage / packing costs. prefer collection.

Hello there

First off, it is so great finding this website whare people genuenly seem to still care about the old video formats, and it indeed is a plessure reading all of these mesages from various enthusiasts who all seems to know what they are talking about.

Well, I am in the process of upgrading all of my video equipment, and I would actually like to be able to play back all of the old formats. I have often stumpled apon various programmes on the old formats that has been for sale various places, however I havent made any purchases, as I didnt have the equipment to play back the tapes. Well, I want to do something about that now, which is why I am posting here. I am looking for working mashines to play back most formats, that goes both for betamax, U-matic, betacom, and I am actually also am looking for a top of the range VSH/SVHS-machine to replace my old model, which is rubbish.

I've been noticing that some times people on here are actually selling these old gems, so I thaught I'd chime in with a mesage about my needs. I'd like to get my hands on a perfect working Betamax model, prefurebly the:http://www.palsite.com/950ovi.htmlOr a equivalent model. I would also like to have the option of playing back both pal and NTSC tapes, however it doesnt seem as if the sony can handle both tv-standarts?Please drop me a line if you have a working machine you'd like to sell. Again, I am not able to fix these myself, so I'd rather purchase a fully functioning model that has been fixed by an expert.

Also, I am not in the UK, but postage and packing would of course be payed for.

all the best from allan

Hi there, I have a much cherished Sony SL-C7UB that I no longer have the space for. It's FREE to a good home, so long as you sort out postage or pick-up. Working condition is currently unknown, as I haven't had it plugged in for a couple of years. But the rewind has historically been very slow.

Also have something in the region of 150 beta tapes in need of a new home. These contain material from the 80s and 90s. Would hope for something back for these.

Email me for more. I'm in Scotland.

Help!

My uncle just have me a BetaMax to switch to DVD. Seems like an easy enough assignment. I plugged it in. Turned the power on. I put the tape in... And then it shut down. Now none of the buttons are working and the tape won't eject. Is there a way to at least get the tape back without prying open the machine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know anything about this bag I picked up at a Canadian thrift store? It's silver with "Sony" in black on each side, and on one end has a thick clear plastic pocket with the Betamax logo on it. Bit smaller than a sports bag, and seems built to carry something heavy (ie. a player). I can't find anything like it online, and I'm curious about its age/history/value. Anyone here interested in a fully functional Betamax Hi-Fi VCR? I have a Sony SL-HFR70 VCR and a HFP -200 HiFi adapter unit available. I am the original owner of both units. I bought them many years ago for my own personal use, and they have been in dry storage since late 2009. Before they went into storage I had my broadcast technician give them a tune-up as I worked in the industry for many years also. Both units are in their original factory cartons and have the owner's manuals as well as the original remote (which should be in great shape, since I always used alkaline batteries only.) I would like to sell the pair for $150.00 + actual shipping costs. If interested, please send me an e-mail. I live in the Reno, NV area; but could meet in the Sacramento area or at Lake Tahoe.

Carl, Your pinch roller is more in likely no longer as flat as it should be and is deflecting the tape away from the audio control head once its starts to pull a little hard. The solution is to replace the pinch roller or redress the old one. Your 2300 is a NTSC so good luck finding a new one.I used to get them from Union Electronics in Illinois but the last time I bought one they were around $20.00. Look down at the tape while it's running and look at the tape as it's being pulled by the pinch roller/capstan.The tape in the area right before it enters the pinch roller should be perfectly straight with little or no wrinkling . If the tape is bending or not nice and straight then the pinch roller is more in likely your problem.

Greetings. I have hundreds of betamax tapes that i am converting over to DVD. Here is my problem, and i am hoping i can get some help I am using a SONY Betamax SL-2300. Most of the tapes play fine, no problem. But i have had a dozen or so that would start out playing fine for maybe two minutes, and then the screen would go blank with no sound, and the counter would still be running. I can hit fast forward or reverse,in Betascan, and see the video. Then the tape will play a few minutes and go blank with no sound once again. As i mentioned, i have hundreds of tapes i want/need to play, and convert. and it is frustrating to have some tapes that do this.I do not belive it is the tapes that are the problem, as they play fine for a bit, and i can bring back picture by fast forward. Ant help would be appricated, and i am hoping it can be something i can try and fix myself, there are no repair shops were i live that will touch them as far as repairing them. I have called and asked. ;( Thank you for your time in advance.

Ross,

The lead cable you've posted is suitable for your Sony C6. It is an 'IN' device in the scart side, so it's the one you need (remember that EuroAV leads are bi-directional and sometimes we choose the wrong one).

You only need an extra BNC-to-RCA adapter (for example, try typing "bnc rca" on eBay) to match your Beta BNC out.

When connected, you should get image and sound almost inmediately (TV should switch automatically to AV channel), but if not, try channel 0, AV, Aux, or Line In, depending on your TV.

Try with different tapes, so as to checking that your machine is not faulty.

Hope that this helps,

Gabriel

Hi Noel:

Points noted. What i meant to say was none of MY OWN tapes are showing any signs.I also have some pre recorded ones from way back to 1978.As for the shocking tape splices.I once hired a VHS film out and noted about ten minutes in a lot of picture disturbance.I decided to eject the tape from my HI-FI machine.Luckily i did. Some idiot had spliced the tape obviously damaged in their vcr with MASKING TAPE.I could'nt believe what i was witnessing.I returned the tape pronto and it was destoyed and i was given another remtal for free.I was just gad i was watching it at the time as i dread to think the damage to my vcr's heads IF it had gotten any further.I have also worked on machines where it would seem their tapes are in an appalling shape. There was so much shed oxide it was also clinging inside the head drum slot and all over the head disc!!!!!!!I always fully forward and rewind ANY tape i get second hand.It pays to do this with new tapes too, especially if Beta ones as they are old 'new' stock.I would only recommend that in a unlacing type though for obvious reasons.

I agree ,keep your treasured recordings stored at room temp and fully rewound. They should last you well.

I am getting the feeling that the person was lying to me and that the machine is broken. It switches on ok but just no picture or sound comes from the tv!!! Are Betamax players from the later 80s more easier to understand and connect? Do the later Betamax's have scart on them? As the C6 has no scart input and I believe if I had 1 with a scart input, it would be easier.

Kevin,

I have noted your comments about tapes in an older post saying you had not seen any showing signs of aging and hinting at a conspiracy theory. I think they are pretty robust but still see some breaking down apart from the well known mold issues from poor storage of humid/damp environments.

Tape Breakdown.

The first is the glue breaking down and the metal oxide medium just shedding flakes of oxide inside the machine. You may get a transfer in one pass if your lucky but it can clog the mechanism and is not good for the machine. I have also seen tapes go gummy where the glue has I presume taken on moisture. The machine just locks up as the friction is too much for the machine to handle. I creates a right mess to clean in the machine. Both are a good reason to use a re-winder first before doing transfers including the mold issue.

Also, you never know when some little fingers have posted the occasional sandwich or buttered toast into the tape slot because they can. Once impurities get onto a machine, on to the tape surface to get wound into the cassette, they come a time bomb for the machine playing those tapes later on.

Another problem is the "amateurs" repairing a broken tape using normal clear "sticky tape" instead of splicing tape. The heads just love that glue.

cheers Noel

Ross,

The Sony SLC6 version in Australia has a UHF TV output when playing which is adjustable between channels 31 and 39. There are also AV in and AV out RCA connections.

If you connect the antenna to the VCR then a lead from the RF out to your TV you should be able to tune your TV in to the VCRs RF channel output.

If you obtained a SCART to RCA lead then you could connect directly which would give the best picture but is more messing around.

I hope this helps.

Ross, before we start we need to get a few things sorted. If you use an RF cable from the VHF / Aerial out of the recorder you will need to tune the television to that channel. Did you do that?

If you use the 'yellow wire' solution you need to connect the 'video out' of the recorder to the 'video in' of the television. But your 'yellow wire' will not fit the video out without a BNC-RCA adapter. It will also only give you a picture. For sound you will need to connect the 'audio out' to 'audio in', or the red & white wires. And once connected you will need to switch the television to the correct input.

In regards to manuals, there are several sites that sell them on-line.The internet hadn't been invented when Betamax roamed the world ;)

Hi. I am the proud owner of a Sony DXF-637 Camera. However I've not been able to work with it because the anti-aliasing filter, a screw in part situated between the lens and the switchable filters on the unit, has caught a really bad case of fungus and has rendered the signal "unwatcheable". The lens coating seems to be compromised and it can't be cleaned as the fungus is growing between the layers of glass. If someone on here could give me a part number for this particular item or tell me how to clean it I would be most appreciative.

Greetings from ‘Downunder’ – Adelaide South Australia to be exact and I hope this posting is along the lines of acceptance for this Forum. I have two Sony Betamovie Camera’s being Models BMC 100P and 200P. I have an AC Power Adaptor AC-M110E, 2 Sony NP-11 Rechargeable Batteries and a SiCor Coated Filter. The BMC100P has been mine from original purchase in Hong Kong in 1983 the BMC200P was acquired much later. There is no interest (that I can find) in Australia in these items and I would hate to just dump them. Does anyone know of an Australian contact or otherwise who may interested in them? There is an electrical torque adjustment in the SL-F30. It is located on board SS-34, pot RV308. It's easily visible on the back-right corner of the machine (close to the video out BNCs) so you don't need to remove any board.

Hope this can help you. Regards,

Hi Guys, Newbie here. I must admit i'm no VCR expert, but did have a grounding in electronics, so i'm handy with a screwdriver and a multimeter!I'm trying to copy some old tapes to my PC, and wondered if anyone can help to repair my Sony SL-F30 VCR? (i bought it brand new when shelf-stacking at Tesco's ,"Ahem" years ago!Intermittently, the Take-up reel stops functioning( Right hand reel doesn't revolve), then it'll work again after resetting the VCR. I've cheated the VCR into loading a tape( my hand!), and holding down the tape sensors/switches on the bottom . When i press play, the take-up reel seems to have very little torque. is there a clutch assembly on the individual spools? also , are any parts still available!?Any Help greatly appreciatedAndy

Leonard,

The Sony HF550 uses a pendulum assembly instead of belts to drive the tape. The only belt used on that machine is the one which operates the loading mechanism. This belt could stretch, but rarely fails.

Which symptoms have the machine?

Good morning Betaphiles,

I've been reading about this F1 's issue and I'd like to give some extra help:

As far as I know, the F1 uses an 'hybrid' mechanism between the SL-C9 and SL-F30. I remember having seen the classic pendulum setup on this unit, so Kevin would be right on his suggestions. What I'm not sure is that F1 shares the whole brake pads configuration. If so, make sure that the solenoid situated on the reel table is working OK (you should hear the 'clap' sound when hitting PB, FWD or REW). If it does not seem to work, the problem could lay on an internal fuse (white coloured) located in the more external layers of that solenoid. Just open it carefully with a sharp tool, not damaging the coil wires. Found the fuse to be guilty, please don't short it with a copper wire. Instead, install an equivalent (N20 type will work) fuse and try to insulate the repair zone from the chassis.

Another suggestion (less probable but I have also seen) is that one of the rotation sensors under the reels is faulty. You can check them with a multimeter, it's not a difficult task.

Hope that this helps.

Gabriel

Hi Tony:

Thinking about my last comments does the F1 have the twin motor reel drive ( as does the C9 )?If so then maybe that's not the answer either.I will have a search for you on common F1 problems i have somewhere and let you know in a day or so if i find anything related.

Bonjour Tony.

Sounds to me like it's the common 'hall effect sensor' failure. You will need to get someone to replace it.One way to be sure. When you press play look at the head disc at the top of the drum.Is it spinning? If it's not whilst the PLAY light is LIT (ONLY) try turning the disc with your finger at the top.Do you feel resistance? If so then it IS failure of that sensor.

Hello,

I agree with Kevin on tape deterioration. It's not so much age that kills a tape. It's mould or excessive use. Mould is contagious. So care must be taken so it does not spread to your valuable collection. Although I generally think BASF Chromium tapes are the most mould resistant(I was given a box of old tapes of a friend, most of the Sony tapes looked fine, the BASF ones looked like new and the Maxell tapes where very mouldy indeed). I actually have one of the cheap de humidifiers in the cupboard with my tapes. It's amazing the amount of water it gets out of the air. The main reason for digital transfer is that most people have moved away from tape based formats. And have no means to play it back.

Hi Guys:

I have found through personal experience the first function that ALWAYS goes bad when a pinch roller is shiny/worn or faulty is REVERSE SEARCH.If you go into reverse search mode and the tape moves up and down or you hear that dreaded clicking/crunching sound, that usually tells you the pinch roller needs a good clean or replacing.Sometimes too on the Sanyo's you can get a rogue capstan shaft that also causes un eveness in the reverse search modes. You can usually see a grooved forming whereby the chrome is wearing where the pinch roller has constantly been applying pressure. As regards using a properly serviced unlacing Sanyo for the FForwarding and REWinding.I always do just that if buying old used tapes. It helps to clean of dry white powder mold, some old tapes have formed ( usually by being in damp environments). It's far better than using them in a always laced early Sanyo,Sony or Toshiba as the stuff will always contaminate the video heads and tape guides/drum.Some i also note who sell beta tapes on E-bay (especially pre recorded ones) don't rewind them. This is not good for the tape especially at the beginning as it will stretch if left like that for long periods of time, and you will see a wavy line go from top to bottom when viewing at intervals, where the stretch has occurred.

Another point of interest ,despite being told magnetic tapes recording deteriorate after so and so years, i have some very old that are showing no signs of this .it may be a ploy to get you to have them transferred to a digital medium. Hmmmmmmm?

Droszi,

It is known that when tapes are not used for long time (twenty years is a lot), problems arise later, specially if they have been kept in horizontal position. When I find something like this, I have a rule of thumb: using a tape rewinder to "freshen" the tapes with two or three passes or using a Sanyo machine to perform this. Sanyos uses better design than Sonys, not lacing the tape when rew/ffwd. Even a discrete VTC-5000 (with healthy rubbers) is pretty good for this purpose.

However, when existing intermittent tracking problems, first item I check is the pinch roller.

Gabriel

Noel,

Yes, they are quite different indeed. I guess that F90 is a VCR which was built by the end of Beta days here in Europe. Because of that it's difficult to find one (VHS was widely accepted). On the other hand, having a look to my "scrap" videos, I have realized that F90 shares the servo IC with the F20 model (odd but true). Now I'm trying to find the service manual for F20 so as to having a clue.By the way, applying 4V to the servo pin (drum) makes it spin. So definitely I have a servo problem.

Now, I have on my bench two C30 s with rewinding issues (both them rewind too slow). Guessing a definitive cure for this annoying problem and thinking about building a torque test jig for rew/ffwd. However, I'm pretty sure that it's a question of a worn out drum's surface.

Thanks for your great support Noel,

Gabriel,

I have only seen the SLF30 and SLF60 machines. I have a service manual for the F30.

Sorry I cant help you because I have never seen an F90. I don have an F50 though and I didn't even know they existed before I got it through eBay. Quite different in design.

cheers Noel

Gabriel, thanks for your reply. The pinch roller is ok. As I mentioned many tapes play ok. The failing ones are our family memories which were not played for at least 20 years. The strange thing is, that my father yesterday tried to play again the failing tape and this time it was fine with the tracking set to the center position. Is it possible that the tape didn't like to stay on the shelf for more than 20 years? :) All that happened was he rewinded the tape and played it again. Is it possible that the band layers on the reel were stuck together and a play/rewind fixed the problem?

Have you first checked the pinch roller? If worn out, it can show similar sympthoms.

Hi!

I'd like to ask you for some help. I have an SL-F1. Many tapes play ok but many of them have some tracking problem. It's simply impossible to find good tracking. Even if you manage to find a good tracking position it keeps locked for only some tens of seconds. On the (rally excellent) palsite there's a tip to re-adjust capstan bias but no instruction on how I should do that. I'm quite good at electronic, I think my real problem is that I'm not perfect in english. Is this capstan "bias" a mechanical thing, like a spring or is it a bias voltage to adjust by a trimmer?

Besides, does anyone here have the service manual for this machine in electronic format?

thanks,Droszi

Noel,

Thanks a lot for offering those schematics. However, design from SL-F30 differs a lot from SL-F90 (the one I need) and internally they don't have much in common. Have you the SL-F90 service manual?

Best regards,

Gabriel

Hello George,

You can connect it with coaxial cable and then tune it. Or use the video and audio in/outs. The video connectors are UHF connectors. You can buy adapters that can change the UHF socket to RCA, then use RCA cables. The audio connector is DIN. Best option for that is to buy the cable with a DIN plug on one end and 4 RCA plugs on the other. Two will be input audio and two will be output audio. You can just use one of each though, as it is still mono. Hopes this helps with what you are looking for. As for where you could get them in the UK, I would not have a clue. If you were in Australia, Jaycar is a good option.

Cheers,Brendan

Thanks guys! The person said they can accept £ 30 for the C6 machine. Being honest, I am planning on starting a small Betamax collection and enjoying watching these films. Especially if I can get a hold of films which have never been released on DVD. I am only planning on watching films with it. Thanks

The C6 is a good basic machine, The C7 offers more features. But if you are only going to do backups then the C6 would be fine. Thanks to Noel Higgins and a service manual I was able to restore my C6.

For the C6 I would offer no more than 30 for it.James

Hi Ross;

The C6 does offer a good picture and sound quality but IS a very heavy and bulky beta vcr.The 'picture flash' is no doubt down to the common issues of bad capacitors in the servo area and a tweak to the head drum motor pot after those have been replaced. The idler tyre for the loading ring mechanism can be an issue too.As for the price Hmmmm. If you could get it down to around £35 to £40 (as you will need to get it sorted) that would be a better offer.

Good luck whatever you do..............Kevin

Gabriel,

Fast capstan means out of lock servo usually from a lack of tracking pulses. The SLF30 and SLF60 machines are the only ones I have seen but much different to the SLC series machines. If you can break the servo line to the drum apply 4Volts DC and it should spin at about normai speed so that it proves the drum motor is OK. Then its a matter of finding the drum servo control fault.

Happy New Year - Noel

Dear all,

Patient: Sony SL-F90 SuperBeta. Symptoms: no head drum rotation, capstan running at high speed on PB. Reel table working OK. Machine threads and unthreads without problems.

At the beginning I thought it was the hall sensor issue, but after changing it there was no improvement. Also changed de whole drum motor, with no remedy. Measuring at drum motor's PCB connector, it gave +12V, but servo pin was always at +0.42V. This made me think about a servo issue (also the capstan problem could lay there). Checked for dry joints as well. Tracking back the signal, I found the servo controller IC (Sony CX20124B) but I don't really know if faulty. As I have a service manual for Sony SL-C30, I can "guess" some schematics, but SL-F90 comprises a newer and different design.

What should I continue checking? Is there any source for SL-F90 service manual (I have not found it on the internet) ? I only need the page where the servo schematics are showed.

Thanks in advance,

Gabriel
