I have one Sony Super Betamax SL-33 PAL VCR (w/remote & box) in excellent condition, one Sony Betamax SL-C7E PAL VCR (no box) in mint working condition, a few recorded tapes of Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball Z series and a Kinyo tape rewinder. I also can sell you some brand new and used Beta tapes if you need some.

All VCRs and the rewinder are dual voltage capable. Both VCRs are made in Japan. Used privately, not in a video rental stores. I don't have any manuals for the items but they can be used very easily.

I would like to sell all of them for a price or separately. All items are located in Jakarta, Indonesia. I can arrange the worldwide shipment especially to US addresses.

Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested.

Allan and anybody else. As for Ebay, if I type "Beta", I get 3 times as many listings as I would typing "Betamax". Mind you I do both because typing "Betamax" has a tendency to list a few different machines than typing Beta. Also, when I need more blank tapes I'll type "Betacam" and get more blank tape listings. Mind you I have been buying only the Professional grade tapes because I know the quality is still there compared to what Sony or Rat Shack sell new. My nikels worth. Later. Pepse.

For Sale: SLO-1400 Beta HiFi duplicator. This is an industrial deck which records B2 and plays B2 & B3. It has low hours and was checked out by a service facility and then stored. It has no timeror tuner, but can be used with an external timer (power-on willstart recording if set that way). Not Super Beta. It is big andheavy and built like a tank. It has been cosmetically modified:the smoked plexiglass cover over the turns counter has been cut away(almost impossible to read otherwise in dim light) and an chart of turns vs. time has been pasted on the front. Due to the dedicatedwide track heads for a single speed I believe it makes and plays tapes more compatibly with other machines. Comes with a copy of the owner's manual. I have the service manual as well as an identical unit for spares (bad capstan motor). It has the "capacitor mod" if you know what that means. BETAMAX TO VHSI'm sure this question has been asked millions of times, but could somebody tell me how to copy a Betamax tape to VHS format in the UK? I have found a rare video, but on Betamax format only, and I have a VHS machine. I am told that it is "illegal" to copy Betamax to VHS, so presumably nobody offers this service commercially. Does anyone know how to get round this problem? Thanks for any help you may be abel to give.

Hello all, I am a bit curious about Betamaxes on Ebay. Since finding new models is next to impossible, I can only look for the used market. And a place where I see quite alot of a machines is on Ebay. But I often have to cringe at the prices bidding wars have run up on some common low-end units. For example, the Sony SL-HF300 is very commonly offered on there, but is $ 200, $250 or more a "good" price? Just to illustrate, I purchased a 300 in perfect working order with original box and all accessories for $50 out of the local want ads not to long ago (and an extra 20 bucks got me a lot of 35 tapes)! Yet, there are 300's on Ebay with the little flip-panel (covering the clock and timer controls) under the display broken or missing, no remote/manual, etc., selling for 4x what I payed for mine or more! Mind you, I'm not trying to rave on and on, I'm just a little appalled at how much a 16- to 17-year-old machine can go for on Ebay. Sure I can understand the high-end models selling for big bucks (supply-and-demand situation), but the more common low-end units? I also own an SL-HF750 which I purchased brand new in '86 and an SL-HF870D (real beauty!) which I bought used in '92. Both of them babies still work fine. Yes, I've loved beta since the early days, but it looks as if good buys on used equipment can be far-and-between.

Love Live Beta!-- Renton

Just To Add: I think my favorite beta machine of all time is the Sony 870D. Not only do I love the digital effects, it's just the very handsome-looking deck! With the large chrome feet, wooden side panels and shiny front, it's almost a perfect match to some of the Sony ES audio equipment that was made around that same time (late 80's to early 90's). My 870D shares an entertainment center with an ES CD player and DAT; both of which I bought around the same time as the used 870D ('92). They all have the wooden panels and stuff. Hey, I'm not lucky enough to own an HF1000 or 2100 (although the recording studio I worked for at the time did have a 1000 they were using solely for PCM!). But the 870D compliments my ES system as well as the 32" Vega TV I acquired recently! :) Other equipment includes an ES DVD machine, a midrange-line Sony VHS hifi deck (I hate VHS so I didn't really bother investing in high-end; just for compatability) and the DSS system with premium channels. The latter is a beautiful source to make beta tapes from! And for that matter, what about copying DVD's to beta? I haven't tried it, but can it be done?

Hey Yet Again!,

Anyone here really familiar w/ the "industrial" beta decks? I have a chance to grab a Sony SLO-420. A nice looking machine, but we can't seem to tell whether it's hi-fi or not. It has audio I/O's marked "CH-1/L | CH-2/R" but no mention of hi-fi. Is it possible that it's linear stereo? Regardless, I think I might grab it anyhow to use as a backup unit.

And on a side note: I really think someone outta make a site similar to this one, but devoted to NTSC beta (w/ a good database of all models). Just my 2¢ (or is it 2p)? :)

To Keith McHugh,

Don't count Ebay out when it comes to PAL Beta mchines. I noticed that in the last several months, there have been more PAL Beta VCRs for bidding on Ebay. Two models I remember recently up for bidding on Ebay are an SL-C9UB and an SLO-1700. They're certainly not as numerous as NTSC models, but they're there. Perodically, there are also multi-system models for bid. Recently, there was a really nice SL-800ME model for bidding on ebay. So periodically keep an eye on ebay, you may score a PAL Beta if you do! To Madness,

The SLO-420 definitely is NOT a Beta hi-fi model. As for it having a linear-stereo capability, my research on the web has not come up with any mention of this model having linear-stereo, but that does not mean it doesn't have that feature. I'd be interested myself in finding out if this model has a linear-stereo feature. Does anyone else know? Howard

Hey Howard (old friend!) and others: the SLO-420 industrial unit DOES have linear stereo, but not hi-fi stereo; I got this from a Sony brochure from that era. Also, to Renton, also above: I've been watching Betas on Ebay for years, and it goes from a sellers market to a buyers market and back again. Right now I'd say it's a buyers market. An SL-HF2100 recently went for about $1100, but the Reserve price hadn't been met (I've seen those puppies go as high as $1500!) Yes, about 80% of the Betas go for really inflated prices, but sometimes you CAN catch a good deal with a little luck, timing, and persistence! FYI, *I* have an SL-HF750 up there for auction right now, starting at $300, with no reserve. Cheers! >>> Ray Glasser

Most multi regional DVD players have macrovision disabled thus enabling vhs or beta copying if so desired. Here in the UK Richer sounds offer a Cyber Home multi regional DVD player for £119 inc. I own one as well as an HF950 and can confirm it will copy to this or vhs with no problem. Since the macrovision signal is entirely diabled, second generation copies are also possible. Having said that the HF950 outshines vhs of course!

The SLO-420 (NTSC) and SLO-420P (PAL) is basically a SL-C9 without tuner. It has a 33 pin remote, and is ADx synchroniser controllable. Its surprising theres not many about as they were used ALOT before hifi's hit the scene thus being replaced by the hf100P and sl0-1700.

They are Linear Stereo, and feature the trick speeds found on the C9 's.

But I am at a loss as to why when I insert a cassette and hit the play button it sounds like its seating it self ready to forward play but instead it ejects the cassette. I live in Ascot, UK, and have a Betamax video recorder model SL-T30ME, in mint, hardly used condition. I think that it was probably bought in Saudi Arabia as the instruction manual is mainly in Arabic (reading from the 'back') and also in English, French and Spanish. I believe it has a tuner for a different version of PAL to the UK standard, as I can only pick up a couple of stations here in the UK and I either get a reasonable black and white picture with poor sound or a poor picture with good sound.

Does anyone have a reasonable condition player that works with UK PAL that they would swap with my SL-T30ME in return for a selection from the items below:Camera model type BMC-110, PAL, excellent condition;Camera model type BMC-110, NTSC, excellent condition(I have two carry cases, one compact, one larger capacity that suit these cameras, plus instruction manuals.)

AC power adapter (AC-M100UB) for the cameras;Seven battery packs (NP-11);One Filter Titler Kit (VF-100T) (as new); One external microphone shoe (SAD-100)(as new);Six unopened Sony L-750 tapes, Three L-750 and one L-500 unopened Scotch L-750 tapes.

I am open to offers on any of the above even if you don't have a player to swap.

Hi everybody. I have not seen this excellent site before.

I have a Sony C6 Betamax VCR.Not my choice but I inherited it free!I had to spend abour £50. on repairs to it 5 years ago. Now it has developed another fault-it only plays and records in B/W, not colour. This suddenly happened-on all channels and with all tapes tried. Can someone tell me if this is an economically repairable fault, or if not where I can find another good machine to record and play mylarge Betamax library? I much prefer to use Betamax than VHS-any fool can see how superior it is over VHS, and I am in the video filming business so know about quality picture capabilities.Incidentally, I use Betacam tapes for recording, which I can source cheaply from professional companies. They play 6 times longer on Betamax than their intended Betacam, so are ideal. but no doubt most of you know all this!I live near London, UK, and hope someone can help with my machine problem: I'm really missing playing my tapes!Jon

>>>>>Also, does anyone have any info. on the HVC-2000P camera,is it black & white only? , any web links for this item ? Thanks, I'm in Manchester, UK. <<<<<<

The HVC 2000, 3000 and 4000 are single tube Trinicon colour camerasdesigned to work with beta portables; they can, via adaptors, work withMains power, VHS recorders or even Umatic Machines; I often use one toproduce a weird 'old film' effect...

Well made cameras with quite reasonable lenses Don't pay more than£20-£ 30 for one though as these are old tube cameras and all willhave aged tubes ..they're not pro items either no matter what the sellerclaims...

Well it made me laugh. About as much chance of a special needle for your turntable thatenables you to play cds with it<<<<<<<

This one seems to come up with alarming regularity ..has no oneadded it to to main pages yet?

Does anyone have an old Sony C-7 for spares. As I'm looking for the circuit board that contains the clock/timer control buttons (just above the clock display) as the one I've been given seems to have all the buttons broken on this section of the machine, so I can't set the clock or timer.

thanks.

I have two Beta decks, neither work and several dozen tapes that I would still like to view. I have tried servicing them but local repair shops say they cannot help me. I need to get one working or find a relatively inexpensive replacement deck. Anyone got any ideas?

For those who are interested;

1.) I am aware of only 6 brands of Beta Machines that were marketed in the U.S. . These were Sony,Sanyo, Toshiba,Sears (made by Sanyo)Zenith and Hitachi. I am also aware of only 2 compayies that made Superbeta models (this was a souped up hifi audio system) those being Sony and Sanyo. I say this because there is currently at least 1 Sanyo Beta VCR being advertised as a "Model#2030....Superbetabeing advertised on EBay! Sanyo didn't start making Superbetas until the series 7000 machines.

2.) When you see ads for Blank Beta Videotapes "Unopened or in Original packaging please be aware that unless they are Sony or Radio Shack Brands they have got to be (at least) 10-15 years old. THEY ARE NOT NEW TAPES!!! This means that they may have been damaged due to temperature and or biologic agents which can erode the plastic in which the metallic Iron Oxide is embedded causing the tape to flake and pose a clogging hazard to the video heads of your machine. Proceed with caution.. Allan A. Smith

Allan A. Smith is right.I once purchased a box of betamax tapes from a junk shop unaware it been in damp condition for so long. after a year when I purchased my first Betamax (Sanyo VTC5000 ) it didn't survive due to the tape i got from the junk shop only the one that came free with the recorder.Later on I got rid of it and bought a Sanyo VTC5150 again it didn't survive so I stopped using those tapes got a new head and got some good reasonable tapes for free (about 3-4 boxes) and 2-3 boxes of prerecorded tapes which still give very good picture production. To those who is angry at the sony shop in the north west (Heald Green)for running out. It was my fault I bought all the tape they had left!!

Paul

P.S. sadly our nearest Tandy store (Radio stack for those in america) closed down.

To Allan Smith,

In the course of my research, I have not encountered any information or evidence that Hitachi ever manufactured or marketed Beta-format VCRs in the USA. If anyone has information on Hitachi Beta VCR models, I would love to hear about them. On the other hand, three other companies DID manufacture and/or market Beta VCRs that were not mentioned in your post. They include: 1) Aiwa, which sold two Beta Hi-Fi models during 1984-85 (both rarely encountered now). 2) Pioneer, which marketed two Beta Hi-Fi models in the mid'80s, both OEM'd for them by Sony, including the famous and much sought-after VX-90, an exact clone of the Sony SL-HF900; 3) Radio Shack's Realistic brand, which marketed several Beta Hi-Fi and SuperBeta models that were OEM'd for them by Sanyo, and were clones of Sanyo models. The three companies just mentioned produced Beta VCRs in fairly limited quantities, so they are not commonly encountered nowadays. Howard

Oops, I almost forgot about NEC, which manufactured and marketed a whole family of regular Beta, Beta Hi-Fi, and Super Beta models up through 1985. Howard

Does anyone out there, north america, have a service manual for the Sony BMC550/Sanyo VRC500? I have both the Sony and Sanyo camcorders and they are both in need of mainly cosmetic work. The Sony seems better mechanically so I am thinking of making one good camcorder of the two. But, I need a service manual to help in my quest. So, if anyone has the manual and can make me a copy I will gladly pay for the manual, shipping and if needed a small service/copy fee. TTYL. Pepse.

Don't you mean Toshiba? I had a Toshiba Beta for a while but traded it for a tasty Beta camcorder. I've seen several Toshiba VCRs and a camcorder on E-bay but never any Hitachi stuff. Maybe you were thinking of Toshiba instead of Hitachi.....

Howard you may be right about because that bit of info came from a repair manual. I have never actually seen one. I have seen examples of the others I mentioned! You are probably also right about Radio Shack However I've no information about AIWA! Allan A. Smith

To Allan Smith,

You will infrequently see a Radio Shack Realistic brand Beta VCR on auction. The Realistic Model 20 is a Beta Hi-Fi model, while the Realistic Model 22 is a Super-Beta Hi-Fi model that is an exact clone of the Sanyo model 7250 Super-Beta Hi-Fi VCR. As for the Aiwa models, Aiwa came out with two models in the mid '80s, the AV-50M (in 1984) and the AV-70M (in 1985). The AV-50M required a separate outboard Hi-Fi processor to get hi-fi sound, while the AV-70M is a compact but very heavy Beta Hi-Fi deck, and loaded with tons of features (I own the AV-70M, it's a fun unit to play around with, but due to lack of spare parts I don't use it much). Both the Aiwa 50 and 70 models have monaural tuners only, and are regular Beta, not Super-Beta. In previous posts about other companies that produced Beta, I forgot to mention Marantz, which in 1982 marketed a single Beta model, the VR -200, which was manufactured by Sanyo for Marantz, and had linear Dolby-C Stereo sound. Hope this info helps. Howard

Help! My Sony Beta SLHFR-70 is in the shop and they can't get the repair manual (Ottawa). The cassette keeps getting stuck, and the controls don't work. The cartridge looks okay, but they can't solve the problem without the manual. Does anyone have an idea where I can get the manual for sure, or know how to fix the problem? I've checked several sites, to no avail.
