Frandid:

Firstly, congrats on finally getting the issue resolved and located somewhat with your picture issues on your beta's and TV.

Secondly, On the Sony's I've seen with poor tape take up un unloading is usually by either the end of the centre idler plastic is fouling the spring that it sit's under or the reel drive motor magnet is slightly making contact with the coils down to the inner shaft bearing being worn down.

I would suspect the former.

The idler assembly is the plastic arm that pivots left and right with a gear on the top end. It makes contact with either tape spool ,depending on which mode it selected.

On the c30 ad similar it had a right angled step on the end .This needs cutting off in order for it not to make contact when moving, with the spring that stretches across over the top. If it does ,when unloading it will hang up enough to stop it getting the right spool to allow tape take up into the cassette.

If it's the latter issue you can make up a small shim out of a resilient plastic to insert into the shaft hole to stop the magnet touching the coils. If it is this issue it usually affects playback too.

Hope this helps...................Kev

Hello K.Lambert, Gabriel and everybody. The problem of white lines appearing on the picture of my SL-C9 F is now resolved. The origin is in fact an interference caused by my LG 50PG plasma TV. The only solution is to cut the little F board circuit from the ground (SR11F PSU), and to place the VCR a little away from the TV, otherwise the lines come back again. (Without this modification in the PSU the lines would still be visible with the VCR placed more than 2m50 away from the TV).

I just purchased a working Sony SL-T50 ME. My first second hand betamax as I bought my Sony SL-C9 F new in the mid 80's, this SL-C9 never worked as it was struck by lightening one week later and put in a box thinking "one day i will repair it"!! Which is now done ! (Yes Gabriel, it is a fantastic machine !).

My SL-T50 looks almost as new as my SL-C9F but I suppose it worked many years.

Guess what : The same white lines appear on the picture of the SL-T50 ME, exactly like on my SL-C9 before my modification !! So no doubt it is an interference from the TV. I will see if I can do the same kind of modification but the PSU of the SL-T50 ME looks very different. Srangely enough my VHS machines do not have this issue, but they are more recent.

This SL-T50 has only one embarrassing issue, I hope somebody can help me. It works fine in all modes, play, rewind, FF etc... but when I eject a cassette the tape doesn't return into the cassette so I get the famous "spaghetti" problem ;-). Normally when I push eject I suppose the command is "unload tape" and "rewind a portion of the tape inside the cassette" but here with this SL-T50 only part 1 of the job is done ! I Have 3 VHS VCR and I remember that in these machines this kind of problem most of the time come from a spare called the "switch mode" but I am not sure there is such a thing in a Sony betamax... ! I am sure you guys know the solution ! Thanks in advance.

Jose:

No domestic Beta had really high end connectors.

They either had Phono, BNC or Scart (and that was for Sony's very last beta the HF950.

A few had 5 pin DIN for sound but most the ones mentioned above.

I hook up my Beta's to LCD TV's with a scart or composite phono at one end and BNC or Phono at the vcr end.the results are great and far better than using the old RF leads.

As for lead quality, go for something that seems good value and looks to be made to be resilient, but not too budget end and definteley not too expensive.

Gold terminals are a positive but the quality will always be better the more thicker the screening or outer cover and inner wires. This improvement won't move mountains though but should be clear and reliable.

Hello - I've started an archive project and recently powered up my SL-HF300 (after 25 or more years). It powers on and loads tape but will not go into Play. The tape wraps around the heads and all transport functions work except for Play. I can fast forward and rewind (seems slow). When I press Play, I hear a click and see some mechanical movement, then it un-clicks and all transport functions are disabled, except for Eject. Has anyone experienced this? or have any troubleshooting advice? I was going to start by recapping the power supply - after figuring out how to remove it.

Thanks for any info - Aaron

Exist real different between composite video and s-video in a lcd tv?

I am waiting for the Sanyo VTC-M40, i never put a betamax in a lcd tv but i see some videos in YouTube, for example in Sony 950 the picture quality is good, even very good sometines, i am not sure but i think 950 has s-video out, i dont think this VCR has component video out.

Sanyos only have composite video out so, exist this real different? and another question, is better a gold cable conector for analog signal or is a myth?

For general information.

I have included two more repair suggestions in the SLC30E repair tips.

They probably are common to most of the front load Sony models based on that chassis design.

Evan,

Wear on the capstan roller over time in use is effectively on the upper and lower edges. I have found the more mechanically invasive method as refacing the capstan rollers using a dremel high speed super tool fitted with a fine grinding wheel works a treat. This is because the roller can spin up to very high speeds making the action sort of "lathe like" in that both the grinding wheel surface and the surface of the object roller are changing quickly with respect to one another. This process takes away tape residue and rubber more from the centre of the roller, thus restoring better grip at the upper and lower edges. Occasionally the rubber of the roller is too far gone and has cracked meaning that a replacement capstan roller is required.

I have a Sony SL 2700 Beta hi-fi stereo video cassette recorder for sale. I am the original owner, it was purchased in 1984, comes with the owners manual, remote control. It is in working condition, however you will need to use the remote to play, since the play tab is fused. I also have numerous extra cassettes. I am asking $ 200 USD funds. When new this machine cost $2.400 plus taxes, it was the state of the art in its day, and that's probably why after 32 years it still runs like a well oiled engine. Shipping will be extra, it is a rather heavy fellow, 25 pounds. If interested please contact me. Pictures of it are available if you email me.

Soaking the pinch roller in my SL-C30UB ...in Iso Alcohol seems to have improved the even pressure on the Tape ..as it passes through the transit system.

I can no longer hear nor detect any tape creasing...

Id much rather have replaced it ..but certainly seeing some improvement.

Played a full tape through without looping or creasing ..

Jose;

My views on 'cleaning tapes'.DON'T USE THEM.

The 'wet type' leave residue all over the tape path and also can get wrapped around the capstan shaft (or the material they are made of does). The 'dry type' are slightly more abrasive than a normal tape, otherwise why make them and describe them as such? If you look at the tape surface it's matt instead of glossy.

Use a normal good quality tape an let it play 99% of the time it will clean the heads. If this doesn't work get a Sony type and let it play for around 10 seconds NO MORE.The Skotch typ too are supposed to be good but like I stated AVOID using them unless REALLY necessary.

The only other way is using the isopropyl alcohol and cleaning sticks ,but those who don't know what they are doing can damage the heads so best avoided too.

There's my tuppence worth on the subject.

Thanks Mr Lambert.

I was Reading about head cleaning.

I know that there was different head cleaning tapes, wet and dry. i have a wet one.

As far as i know wet tapes is for clean the fisical dirty like particles, dust etc, and i had read that dry tapes are for demagnetize the heads.

I know that there are a special útil similar like a palette to clean heads with product like isopropyl alcohol or other special liquid.

So my question, Is the best way to clean heads, betamax, vhs and other VCR heads, first a wet clean with palette or in other case a wet tape, and then a dry tape to demagnetized the heads?

The 'timer/ clock control' door panel was poorly conceived with it's open down operation ,in that many have the hinges broken ,most likely down to being knocked when open.

The two mint M40 's I have are complete. Sadly it's hit or miss if they have one if getting one used. Sometimes they are included but without hinges or the securing clasp. They can be repaired.

If the M40 is rare in your country then getting one from a non working, but otherwise complete, one is your only option. The M10/20 also suffer like this too.

The NX100 /10's front flap seemed a stronger design but they too seem to be regularly broken by the owners.

I already have them both but appreciate the offer.

If it's any help to you the mechanical parts list for the M10 will be IDENTICAL to the M40. So the parts list you have for the mechanicals should suit your needs.

I've given you the head disc number for the M40 and

Like I stated earlier the NX series had very slight differences mainly with the pinch roller centre bearing being a tad smaller than the M series so that size pinch roller won't fit.

I may have a PDF file for the M40 's parts if I have I'll e-mail the file to you.

Not making any promises here so hopefully I have.

i like to have all information about my VCR because here in Spain is very difficult to find a good profesional.

let me put an example, in few months the capstan of one of M40 it will break.

If i go to the technical center they probably tell me, forget it, this machine is very rare in Spain and you can not find one.

If i try to find a capstan for this machine i can forget it, but if i have the manual and i can cross references maybe i can see that the capstan is the same like M10, or NX10 for example, and there are lot of this machines in the market.

I have an old Lancia, it is very very difficult to find spare parts, but if i look for Alfa Romeo, that have many common spare parts or even the Fiat, is more easy. This is an information that specialist should have but unfortunately Spain is different.

I have the nx10 and M10 series service manual that have the parts info, if you need i can send you, and i woud like to have M40 series too

Belt's you can measure and obtain seperatley so it's not critical to get those genuine. You'd be hard pushed to now.

The idler tyres too,(that's all you need NOT the entire assemblies as they don't wear out).

The pinch roller will probably be the same but the ones in yours should still be good.Unless you are really unlucky.

What other parts were you trying to get the Part numbers for?

This link I gave before but here it is again in case you missed it.It should be thorough and you are looking for the SERVICE manual not OWNERS.

Use this link and you should be able to get just about ANY service manual for any vcr you want. Quite cheaply to on a PDF downloadable file. https://www.owner-manuals.com/index.php?main_page=index

If by any chance you are unable too then you will have to do a search.

Also a few other things to mention the reel spool and top of the reel motor bearing benefit with a TINY drop of oil so does the upper and lower capstan shaft bearings.

All mechanical parts should be interchangeable with the 'NX' and 'M' series apart from the pinch roller which is different.

Good luck.....................Kevin

Jose;

The common issue I have mentioned.

Bad belts. (tape insertion, reel motor and loading ring).Bad idlers (top for PLAY /picture search,Bottom for FF and REW/tape take up after pressing stop.

Tracking control comes loose inside.(I have repaired many of these successfully).

Then basic capstan/pinch roller cleaning, that's all they need,i've yet to have to replace one on the 'M' series.

The internal tracking pot for normal play can sometime benefit from a tiny tweak to get the machine to lock in perfectly to all Beta hi-Fi recordings from this and other machines.

The tape spool edges benefit from a re groove with a needle to give the idler tyres more grip and help this system last longer.

Also a resistor upgrade on the syscon board if the left spool is still slow after replacing/cleaning all reel drive items.

Those are the common issues which compared to Sony's are quite trivial but necessary all the same for many years trouble free use.

The belt's you will have to measure and then do a search for.

I do have the correct ones and could send you some. That is always an option.

Today i will send the two VCR to a tecnical center.

They are not specialist in Beta but he told me that they will test the videos.

Can you tell me the common problems apart the tracking adjustment?

i am sure if i tell the guys the problems, they can test it and check if everything Works properly.

Can you tell me where i can get the disassembly manual for this VCR?

I downloaded the service manual in the web you told me, but this manual has not the spare parts references like belts, pinch rollers, capstan and other spare parts that maybe i need to find, and i can see too how dissasembly the VCR.

Jose:

Your issues for the poor loading and tape eating are indeed down to the belt's ALL of them (three) and both idler tyres.

The tracking control may have come apart inside. This is common and can be fixed but is extremely fiddly.

One way to know for sure.

When playing a tape and going into picture search mode, (on the one that does) turn the tracking pot all the way to the left and right. The noise bars on screen should rise or fall exactly in time as you turn the control either way.

If they do not or they partially move and then stop or refuse as you gently turn the tracking pot then it is loose inside. Only when you've done this check can you ascertain whether or not the Beta Hi-Fi heads are tracking in right and how good they are.

Also recording on the machine and playing it back and then using the tracking will also let you know how good those hi-Fi heads are. If they are excellent, you should be able to turn the tracking both ways and the green Beta Hi-Fi light should stay illuminated at both extremes.

Only try this though when you are positive the tracking control is A1.

Let us know how it goes.

Happy to post here that finally i have the two Sanyo VTC-M40

i can test the two VCR, one Works fine, only need to change belts and pinch roller maybe.

The heads Works fine, sometines the image is not good and it looks like the hifi did not Works properly, in this moment it looks like the tape is slower, but when the tape goes ok the hifi Works fine, i think maybe can be a belt problem, and the image quality is very good instead the tape have 30 years.

the other problem is that i cant insert the tape, i need to help to insert the tape with my hand, i think this can be belt problem too.

It has two leds of hi-fi scale loosing, i dont know if i can change it or need to change all the mechanism.

But the VCR Works ok.

The other i can not test it because when i insert the tape the VCR beat it.

Hope this Little things can be fixed easily.

Some say NO as it can cause the rubber to harden or age prematurely others say yes.I would say yes but go easy with it.

You could use soapy water (making sure it doesn't get inside the bearing).

Also a rag or suitable cloth to rub the surface to get the unwanted stuff off.

Thanks for the reply Kevin ..

Currently I am soaking the pinch roller in Iso alcholol..

but from memory ..the middle area about tape width was highly polished smooth in places but crackled in others ..

The top mm or so above and below the tape contact line was as expected as this area had not been damaged and looked as it should.

Is ISO a suitable chemical to use ..or should I use something else ?

Evan:

You can still get them but due to their scarcity the price is usually quite high .Around £28.00 the last time I saw one a few months ago.

I believe it was on E-Bay.

Is the pinch roller hard on the edges but the rubber still flexible (can you dig a finger nail into it>If so it will need changing.

Normally when they start to wear out you will get tape damage in reverse search.

When it get's even worse the tape won't track correctly in the extreme end guide and also you can get diagonal inner tapes crease NOT GOOD.

Let us know as it is possible to clean them getting some more life from them.

Also the capstan shaft has to be very clean with no grooves or indents in the chrome.

This too will cause tape pull through issues.

Frandid,

Congratulations! At this time, you've done more research on that issue than many of us. It is really weird what is causing your interference, but finally you've sorted that out.

The Sony C9 is a real technological monster for its era, and because of that is sometimes a pain to repair. But beyond that, it's a beautiful machine.

Hi again ! Early this morning I woke up with an idea : As I don't think it comes from one of the components but from some kind of mysterious and highly improbable interference I took out of the VCR the little F board soldered to the power cord and the metal frame on which it is screwed and plugged it with a 15 cm pair of wires on the DC plug comning out from the rest of SR11F (M+C in metal box with heat sinker and D+CD09) which is still normally screwed inside the VCR... : NO MORE WHITES LINES AT ALL !!! I am testing it for 2 hours now... !! Brainstorm... ?! I don't know what to believe... !

Frandid:

Firstly many congrats on sorting out your current issues. I know you don't know what caused it but hey, it's nice to have it working again yes?.

As for the PSU issue. The C9 is famous for the failing of the Dc-Dc converter affecting clock display and tuner.Basically the metal can allowed the electrolytics to dry out and hence not function. Usually taking out a transistor and resistor or four!

I am like you ,want to NOW what causes said problems and I too have found myself in your position many times.

one thing I did learn though ,was IF and issue is prolonged and ongoing AND you get a cure.Leave it at that.

Some of these vcr's have been put here to test us ,with that I'm sure.

Some are a real pain, others total joy to work on and repair.

What I would do is check all electrolytics with a ESR tester in the PSU and also all resistors and transitors.

Hope this helps...................Kev

Hi K.Lambert and Gabriel ! The first issue with my SL-C9F is now resolved yet I don't know which component or soldering caused the trouble. Second issue was that the mecanism often damaged tapes, it seems that it operates much better now.(I worked on it recently, adjusting guides, parallelism etc.). Now last BIG problem is the craziest ! I don't know if I'll ever get rid of it !! It is some kind of mysterious "interference". It looks like the problem of statics or head amp you describe on this site, little horizontal lines of White speckles, sometimes (but rarely) moving up and down. The lines are more or less visible if I raise the head amp but never disappear completely. During the last years I had the opportunity to test 2 other head amps and the problem was the same with all of them. I also resoldered almost every joint on the original head amp without success. I must say that the lines also appear in "non playback mode" I mean if I connect a source to the AU input I will see the lines even in stop mode. In the past I tested replacing the main video board RV 8 and almost ALL the main boards and it never changed anything. I also tried to connect a metallic blade from the center ground to the upper screw of the head drum as described here http://www.palsite.com/pcat_gndkit.html but it did not suppress the lines at all. Lastly I had the possibilty to test another PSU and you will understand why it is now getting me mad : On the replacement SR11F PSU board only F and M+C boards were OK (D board had CD09 not working) so I made a test with my original D board + F and M+C from the replacement PSU: Guess what : NO MORE horizontal lines, I made it work more than 30 minutes with several tapes, powered on and Off the unit several times. Touching and lifting the head amp or any part of the VCR did not change anything, NO lines at all ! BUT, as I wanted to know exactly which part of the PSU caused the problem I had the BAAAAD idea to swap F board then M+C to see which one caused the trouble... Each time I swapped one part the lines came back ... then as I did not understand what was going on I reassembled again the PSU like it was when it was working, original D board with F and M+C from the replacement PSU and.... believe it or not the lines were still here ! I checked everything I could in the PSU since then and did not find anything, the horizontal lines still appear on the screen... help me please before I really go mad with this problem ! PS : I have a Zerostat gun purchased 30 years ago when I was in England, is it a good idea to use it on the VCR, especially PSU and head drum or is it dangerous for the tapes ? Otherwise what do you suggest other than black magic or exorcism... ?! Best regards.

Thanks for the info.

Jose:

Many thanks for the ,unfortunately I'm unable to read this site.

I would be interested in obtaining a set or two. If they have that many?

The M40 was one of Sanyo's best Beta's for resolution at around 2.8.(no doubt their Superbeta US models were even more).

It isn't as highly featured as the Sony SLHF 950 but then again the 950 can suffer with other issues difficult to sort out if highly used. The M40 is not as complex but very reliable if overhauled periodically.

Thanks again..................Kevin

Jose Carlos,

Would you mind giving us the contact details of your Beta heads supplier? That would be great.

On the other hand, Sony Dynamicron Pro-X were suitable for recording on SuperBeta. I think I bought some of them time ago, they are laid somewhere in a box.

Kevin,

Compatibility among regular Beta and SuperBeta is guaranteed by design (acceptable differences in Y signal bandwidth) so as to get "only" a 20% image improvement. I recall not being the same among regular VHS and SVHS.

Jose:

I don't think they do.

You would get over saturation of the tape if you recorded in Superbeta Pro on a normal beta tape and it would look terrible if playing back a SuperBeta pro recording on a normal beta deck.I've tried it.

The difference between Superbeta however and normal beta is more agreeable, showing little signs of interference or incompatability.

I know what you mean though as SVHS has a little hole that a switch falls in to identify whether the tape is SVHS or normal.

Jose there was an alternative Sanyo M40 head disc number (genuine Sanyo that is).

So the end part of both original numbers (143-0-242v-) should be either 21000 or 21100.

I would be very careful there.

Make sure the disc has four heads. You will know for sure, if it is correct.

If it has two they are not correct and you could fit it but wouldn't get any Beta hi-Fi.

I hope it is and I would love to know what price they are going for.

Fingers crossed.....................Kevin

I was thinking about superbeta tapes.

I dont know in beta system but in vhs you can know if the tape is svhs or even dvhs because the tape have two holes in svhs and trhee holes in dvhs in the back.

I dont know if superbeta tapes have some kind of peculiarity to know what tape are

I didn't even realise there was a M50 offered (VHR 7500 in the US) until a few years ago.

We didn't get that model in the UK.I thing Australia.New Zealand got the M50 and the US VHR7500 same model on NTSC instead of PAL like the M50.Why the UK didn't get it is a mystery.

Then Sanyo started to sell their own brand VHS models VHR 1100,1300 and 1500E.

I would love to get hold of a 1500e model complete.

There is a site I use that you can get on PDF for a few pounds any vcr service or owners manual.

The site is called...https://www.owner-manuals.com/index.php?main_page=index

You have to register and then put in the model you are looking for.

I've used this six times for really obscure items and they always have it.

You have to wait a few hours before you manual is sent to you by e-mail then you log in on the site go to downloads and download it to your PC or whatever you use. Then open it up at your leasure.

Hope this helps.I recommend the site highly. They also offer different ones for different countries.

Sony UK is 'UB' and European ones especially for the UK are usually 'E'.

If those heads are Ok especially Hi-Fi ones (some don't realise they are worn as the ordinary mono edge track ones cut in if the Hi-Fi ones are worn or mis tracked).

Then I would grab them.

What you will need are new belt's the grooves that the idlers touch refreshing with a needle to give more grip, Two new idler tyres (don't worry about the whole assembles as the tyres are usually all that's required) and maybe a resistor upgrading if the tape doesn't go into the cassette when all those are changed.

The tracking control pot's can be loose inside but you can repair them. Hope fully those will just need the rubber components renewed and good clean and slight re lube to the bearings.

The PSU is located where the mains wire goes in.It's and rectangular, silver looking piece

It has a few screws and plugs to unsecure and then it slides out.

Usually with Sony's the screws that need removing have and arrow engraved in the metal.

It isn't many screws ,they are located on the side, rear and back.

hi Neil:

If you want to remove the PSU from your 950 and send it to me would make things a lot easier. I can check them for you.

I do have a feeling though that's it's not the PSU causing your high drop out's.

Barrie.

Could be many things with your VTC 5000. Fuzzy colour is not normal for them. Check the bottom board for dry joints or even damage or leaky capacitors.

If you want to send it to me that is an option.

Hi Kev.

Regarding your previous post to me regarding my excessive drop-out problem on my SLF950.

The caps in the PSU of the 950 can go high ESR too, eventually wiping out transistors and a fusible resistor.

Err, how do I check for this fault, & if you can help on the parts front, could you talk me through how to complete the repair. (Treat me like an idiot, won't be difficult!)

Andrew, to echo Kevin's sentiments, my condolences on the death of your partner. By the amount of videotapes and machines available, was he also interested in the archiving of vintage broadcasts, and perhaps a contributor of footage to various websites? If so, it might be an idea to let those other sites aware as well...

Some of the items you have offered are also of interest to myself as well as others, but collection is not possible, so only if you are able and now in a position to make these available for courier collection, please let me know as and when you can.

Hello.

My partner passed away very suddenly in December. He was a poster on here and he loved his obscure video machines.

I've been sorting out his belongings and he has lots of Betamax and a video2000 machine.

Video2000 is a Pye 20vr23 in full working order with approximately 100 videos.

Also there are 8 Sony slhf100ub videos in full working order. 4 sanyo vtc5000 in full working order. 3 Sony slc7, 4 Sony slc9ub, 8 Sony slhf950ub (3 in the box), 2 Sony slf30ub. Toshiba v9600b, NEC 790, and there is about 2000 Betamax video tapes. A mix of blank tapes and old rental from the Gloucester video centre.

If any of you would like to come and collect them in south Wales you're more than welcome.

Regards.

Andrew.

I've been storing a Sony SL8000UB video recorder (No. 200111) for many years. In fact since we bought it from new. The tape eject tray will not stay shut but otherwise I believe the machine to be in good order.

If anyone is interested in taking this machine off my hands they can gladly have it as long as they are prepared to pick it up from Leeds.

Please let me know ASAP as I am having to clear the space and I am finding it very hard to make that final trip to the Council Tip.

Jose:

The belt kit,s, if they are like the CLASSIC PARTS ones, will have four belt's. This will cover a few Sanyo models.

The ones you will need are the smallest one (reel drive) the second size one (tape loading ring motor) and the largest one (for the cassette insertion mechanism),on your model.

The pinch rollers too from CLASSIC are incompatible with the ones that fit the earlier Sanyo models including top loaders. The NX100 /10 and other incarnations have a different diameter bearing hole. Only slightly but enough to stop the older types from fitting and letting the pinch roller spin freely.

If your going by your vcr's belt's diameters or circumference always remember to allow a few millimetres for stretch on the old ones.

Hope this helps and let us know if those pinch rollers are OK. If so I may be needing some :)

They probably are ,I have to look long and hard on the internet. Just put in a search for vcr rubber drive belt's.

You may have to source some from the US. Measure your originals and take away a small bit of the diameter down to stretch.

They are around you just have to look long and hard.

I managed to get the ones I needed seperately. The chances of getting them in kit form are slim.

Hello!

I have a SL-C30 Betamax. Problem I have is that it doesn't eject the tape, so I opened it up. Cut the tape (it was importante) and took the tape off. But it still detects the tape inside so it won't let me put another in it even though it's empty. The only thing it does when it push "eject" is rewind a little and stop. The "Tape Inside" light still on.

I've tried unplugging everything. Check contacts, all seems to work fine. I'm going mad. Any help, please?

Hello! At the base of http://www.palsite.com/slt50tech.html the following fault is detailed:

"explosion and thick white smoke in PSU, the VCR still work perfectly"

Is it safe / advisable to keep using the machine with the two capacitors still in place?

I have a virtually unused SL T30 -ME machine that had been dry stored for the last 15 years and suffered from this problem when I powered it up last week. I'm OK with removing the top casing but wouldn't like to attempt gaining access to the power supply casing unless someone can point me to a manual or detailed steps!

Also, what's the best way of removing the slightly acrid smell left on the top casing? I can only detect the smell if I get within a couple of feet of it but I'm thinking of eBaying it and would rather the smell wasn't present; I'm going to be honest in my description and point people to the fault description at http://www.palsite.com/slt50tech.html :)

Thanks!

Frandid,

If you shorted the board at certain point, there is a chance that you blowed a fuse or a fuse resistor. For example, begin checking F603, which is near IC611.
