Does anybody know where I could purchse some boards for a SL-2700 betamax vcr, I just got done fixing mine, There is no HIFI sound the light lights up but no hifi and the player still detects when there is a tape recorded in hifi because of the indicater light and It does not get any channels, I finally got it to pause and do the slow motion, before when I pressed pause and slow motion the tape would run very fast witch still does after I un pause it and the slow motion and now when I press slow motion times 2 I don't here any sound, I tried adjusting the little knobs on the boards, can any one give me any info how to fix the problems or where I could purchase boards for the unit.

Thankyou

Dear Howard; I appreciate the info! I'm a Sanyo collector (I have a Sanyo 7250 myself)but I like to gather information about Betas in general. PAL seems like a whole new world to me- but I'm learning! Right now I'm trying to locate a cheap tape tension tool because I am trying to teach myself to make the tape tension adjustment and/or replace the band(s) in several of my machines!! My favorite Beta machine is the Sanyo VCR 4650 (I have 3) they are sturdy and make a great recording and are relatively easy to fix and are quite common in the Detroit, Mich area. If you or anyone is interested I saw some brand new Sony L-750 HG's at a local retailer in Dearborn Michigan listed as Adray Appliance in the phone Book. Best Regards Allan A. Smith

Wer kann mir weiterhelfen??

I have a Sony SL-HF 300 Beta Hi-Fi with the service manual and remote control for sale. Included is 133 Beta Tapes, all are original tapes, and all but 3 tapes are in their original boxes. Works perfectly. The only item missing is the front panel door. The color is black. Here is a sample list of the beta tapes: Evil Dead; Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn; Maniac; I Spit On Your Grave; Alien; Aliens; Faces of Death, Part 2; and more. All tapes are in the Horror/Sci-Fi genre. Also included is a Beta tape rewinder. I am selling the machine and tapes for $275.00. Need to make room for my 165 DVD movies.

I am trying to find BETA Pre-Recorded Tapes in Original Retail Boxes, or High Quality copies of Adult Videos from the 1980's. Primarily starring one Traci Lords. Name may be spelled Tracy, Tracey, and even Tracie on the boxes. I have a lot of them on VHS, and the new DVD Releases of 8 of her videos, but I would like Beta Retail Copies as well. Particularly an English Version of Young and Restless II.

I will pay for these tapes, shipping, etc., and I have just purchased a Multisystem ME-T50 so format is no problem either. If you have them on VHS, I'd be interested in them as well.

You can email me at my email address, and I can provide an entire list of the videos I am looking for.

Greetings Guys,

I went ahead and purchased that Sony SLO-420 deck! Hey, the price was right and it works fine! That sucker is built like a tank and weighs just as much!

But I'm curious: If anyone here happens to own one, there's a removeable panel on the top, right where the channel-program controls would be on a consumer model, that says, "This lid cannot be opened." And I can't get the thing open, either. I was just wondering what was under that panel? Or did they just use the same cover for the SL-2500 and glue the little thingie shut?

Also, I notice that there's a jack on the rear panel marked "changer." So this thing would take a cassette changer like the SL-2500? I've seen pictures of that changer for the older top-loaders, but never one for a front-loader. Does anyone have one or even a picture of it? I'd just like to know how it sits on the machine and how it operates.

And to comment on a couple of earlier posts: I also own an Aiwa AV-70M. However, the reeltable drive gear inside it broke, so I'm waiting to receive the replacement from Aiwa (yes I was able to get it!). I'll be able to get that baby working again, very soon! :)

Just an update since my last message: I just finished copying a DVD using the SLO-420 w/ the BNR switch on and set for two-channel linear audio. I was quite surprised at the resulting sound. It's not hifi, but not too far from it! As long as that tape it played on the 420, it has a rich sound (even over a stereo!). I also tried it in my HF300, but it sounded much more muddled. I assume here, that regular decks w/ linear mono can only read 1 channel?

Also: There was a beta convention? Geez, that sounds cool, but of course, I live too far away. :(

To answer your question - only the best! An SLHF-950 CE (and an SL-800 ME ). Curiously enough, what I thought was a Hebrew SAP was actually never intended to be heard at all, seems someone had recorded, edited and duplicated the video with Hifi equipment (and the HiFi switch left on) but since almost nobody in the Mid-East had stereo betas put all the sound effects, music, dialog etc on the linear track. Having brought our familie's HiFi beta over from Berlin I was able to "discover" this editing gaffe.The movie itself is a curious attempt to make Beirut seem like hip LA (Ahmed is a delivery boy for "Hollywood Pizza") with lots of transitional shots of beach scenes - convertibles cruising past palm trees and buff surfer "dudes" the like. We're supposed to take a bombed out apartment building as part of "the ghetto" (excellent gang bang scene ensues) makes me wish I had a penis (not really)With it's cheesy 80's metal soundtrack and even cheesier acting it ranks as a classic. I bought a box of 'em from a distributer looking to recycle for blank tape but I did save a copy for myself. Great movie to "sink the sailor" with... :-}

to dylan lewis:

new beta tapes : sony center in the city, truscott hifi, radio rentals, sony themselves sell them (technology park, near the airport), grenfel hifi, big W had them up untill about 2 years ago, umatic services........just to name a few.......its a case of look and yea shall find....but if your after the "high grade" tapes thats a different story. DO NOT BUY THE TDK beta tapes from truscotts...

If your after a manual for your 950, ask the guy at grenfel hifi, I cant remember his name but its a bit different, I am told he has everything under the sun and would copy such things for a small fee.

I have had the best luck with SVHS fuji tapes rewound into old beta shells, I tried TDK SVHS tapes in the gold wrapper, they were terrible!!

for some reason, i find alot of beta gear moves through the woolworths boards where you can sell your own stuff....keep an eye on them I have bought tapes through there before.

hope this is of some help.

Dear nobby; I recently ordered some spare reel belts (I ordered 5 and was sent 5 packages of 10 by mistake, I also bought some idler tires and can spare a couple. The reel assembly for almost all front loading models of Sanyo Betas is the same so I believe my items will fit your machines. If you want some Belts and/or Tires I'll sell the belts for $0.50 American, and the Tires for $1.00 American. Contact me @ my E-mail Address if interested. Also 2 American Companies carry these items on a regular basis namely 1.) Fox International and 2.) MCM Electronics in Ohio (both have 1 -800 toll free numbers)but they also have minimum purchase Amounts. They carry other Sanyo parts also (Particularly Fox) Allan A. Smith

I recently found a Sony SL-5000. The play mechanism works but the picture only imtermittently appears and the audio is slowed down (women sounds like men, men sound like walruses). I cleaned the heads but it didn't help.

It sounds like the motor is running too slow. I think this is the case because what little picture there is disappears when I mechanically slow the drum down (by lightly resting my finger on top of the drum as it's rotating).

I read a post somewhere where someone talked about adjusting the "capstan free-running motor speed" on their circuit board. Does anyone know if this is my problem? Or have suggestions on how to fix it?

Short of that, does anyone know of a decent repair shop in San Francisco that would take a look at it?

The VCR belonged to my grandfather. He has some tapes that we would love to view, but can't without a workable Beta player :-)

Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased about 100 beta tapes without the cardboard sleeves, and they are all very dusty and most of them have labels that I would like to remove because I am going to record over them. Anyone know what would be the best method to clean and remove all the labels from the tapes, or should I not bother? It probably can be very time consuming.

Dear Eleanor, Betamax technically was not a disaster. It was far superior to VHS in terms picture quality, even by today's standards. It also had the benefit of having a more compact cassette size than VHS. The professional version, Betacam, was very much a success with broadcasters etc.

At one stage, domestic Beta had around 40% of the market share in the UK. The system was more popular in Japan and the USA. The down fall of the system in the UK was that Sony refused to make licence's to manufacture Betamax recorders, widely available to other manufacturers. Companies such as Hitachi were interested in obtaining one, but Sony refused. There was only a handful of companies granted a licence and these were NEC, Toshiba and Sanyo, as far as I can remember. However the main reason that Betamax failed was that the rental companies, such as Radio Rentals etc. decided to back VHS rather than Beta. In those early days, when VCR's were very expensive and quite un-reliable, a lot of people rented their machines and most of these were VHS. I think Thorn EMI owned one of the big rental chains and they had backed the VHS system and assembled Ferguson (JVC badged) VHS recorders for rental/sale. Software houses backed VHS more than Beta, mainly in the later days, because Betamax ignored their anti copying system "Macrovision", still in use today.

I hope this brief resume will be of use to you. Maybe other Beta fans can add more detail or verify that what I remember is factual.

Regards,

Steve Szmidt.

To Loren; Get someone who knows what they are doing to adjust the Audio/Control head (You may need a new one) Please don't do it yourself and if you keep on slowing down the Video Head with your finger you may soon be able to throw your Beta into the trash!

To Robert; The TOSHIBAS I've seen are junk and parts are generally unavailable . You can try cannibalizing one to save the other.

To Ron; Try contacting Sony Parts Dept. and ask to purchase the Service Manual (which usually has schematics) for your model. Both Sony and Sanyo will sell them and you don't need a liscence. If they offer you a Microfiche buy it cause its cheaper then visit your local library and use their fiche printer to print yourself out a copy!

Best Regards- Allan A. Smith

To B2 Down Under:

I checked out your website, and took a look at the photo of the SL-S2000 you posted. The SL-S2000 looks exactly like the American NTSC model SL-300 mono SuperBeta VCR. I own an SL-300 in my collection, and I use it in my living room mainly as a secondary VCR to view my tapes recorded in mono sound when my main SuperBeta Hi-Fi unit is being used to tape something off the air. The SL-300 was introduced in the USA around 1987 or 1988, and is a nice mono machine with fairly good picture quality, average sound, and okay tape transport. I assume the PAL SL-S2000 version came out around the same time (late '80s). Interesting to see the PAL version of my SL-300. Thanks for the photo on your site. Howard

Stuff I'll sell - make me an offer for this stuff - any offer considered==================================================- An SL-C7UB with a BetaStack tape changer, working (needs a service), instructions, remote control. - A wood-effect and chromed Toshiba, model forgotten. Backlit LCD display! VGC, dust cover, instructions.- Toshiba top-loader, model forgotten, the 4-head model. Heavy.- Sony SL-C9UB. Faulty but I've had it running. "Common fault" plastic gear things broken. A couple of other faults.- A couple of Sonys - models forgotten. Black frontloaders. One's a C30 I think. The other's an F25 or something that I've never connected to a TV but I've run tapes in it.

HELP! We have 2 Sony Betamax: SL-2500 and HiFi SL-HF500. Recently, the SL-2500 malfunctioned and won't take any tape. The HiFi SL-HF500 works fine on any tapes originally recorded on it. However, it refuses to play any tapes originally recorded on the SL-2500. We would much appreciate any help concerning this problem. Thank you.

Hi all on the board. I just have a question about Beta reals, and sorry for my ignorants. I can remember when I was looking at my uncle's VCR which was a Beta back in 1981, and the reels and heads looked exactly like a standard casette recorder. Does this mean that casette tapes could be played in the machine? If not, could a casette head cleaner be used in the Betamax recorder to clean heads, and capstan? Any information would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

betahifi @ bigpond.com

Howard, in regards to sl-s2000 / sl-300.

The unit on my site I purchased at auction with a tape path problem for 3 dollars, thats about $1.60 US.

I spoke to my trusted sony repair agent who is bit of an expert, he says the sl-s2000 (released here 1990) was a modernised sl-200 (realeased here 1988), which was a similar unit but a secam/pal multisystem, which was also released in NTSC as the sl-300, he says the sl-2000 was NTSC. beats me, I just thought it looked nice ;)

I hope this is off some help

Also, I am after the "James Bond Beta HiFi Demonstration Tape" supplied as a Sony UHG L-125 with the SL-HF100. In Pal format.

A little off-topic folks, hope nobody minds too much.

Panasonic F10 or F15 camera wanted. Must be in good working order. VCR or PSUnot really required though if one's thrown in it might be a nice sweetener

Will pay up to £100 for F10, £120 for F15. No offers above these prices; the camerasjust aren't worth any more! UK only, I'm located near Edinburgh and will travel as far asNewcastle or Aberdeen.

Happy to pay in folding fun tokens so long as I get at least a handwritten receipt;Personal purchase so no VAT or paperwork nonsense ..I just want a receipt in case thething turns out to be nicked or summat.

To Anthony:

A VHS tape is bigger than a beta. Dimensions are:

VHS: Length: about 7½"; width: 4"; height: about 1".

Beta: Length: 6"; width: about 3¾"; height: about same as VHS.

Just a quick query: Do anyone know whether or not the Sony SLHF550 has a stereo tuner? I know some of the earlier "stereo" hifi betas (i.e. SLHF300, 500) had a mono (???) tuner! And incidently, I own both a 300 and a 500 but can't really tell the difference between them (other than cosmetic). But I'm considering a 550.

I have a Sony SL-C7 that is in need of repair, I have about 30 tapes which I would like to show my children. I have someone looking at it, and he has been for the last 3 years, but he is after a repair manual or a servo setup manual at least. Do you know where I could beg, borrow, steal or perhaps even buy one? It will be a shame if these tapes can never be viewed again. Many thanks.

To Renton,

Yes, the SL-HF550 SuperBeta Hi-Fi VCR does have a MTS Stereo tuner. I own a SL-HF550, and it is a pretty good unit; I use it all the time to tape stuff off the air. It's a very good, middle-end unit from around 1986. As far as the difference between the older SL-HF300 and the SL-HF500 models, about the only difference I can remember between the two models is that the SL-HF500 has a linear time counter (index and count tape in real time), while the SL-HF300 uses a strictly numerical time counter. Hope this info helps. Howard
