I am wondering if there is a website in Britain similar to, if not the British version of "E!" Online. I am watching a movie on CBC called "Cold Lazarus" and missed the beginning part with the actors. The promo for the late nite movie on Tuesdays is called, something like, "The best of Britains Movie Classics"?. I know it ain't exactly Beta related unless of course you consider that I am in the process of replacing about 75% if my vhs tapes to make room for more Beta tapes to record with. If there is a website that lists european movies not generally available in the US, let me know. Thanx. Pepse.

Hello...I have a strange problem and can't figure it out. Maybe somebody on this page can help. I picked up a sony hfr-70 unit at consignment shop. I took it home and played a beta tape and the picture was snowy. I then went and got professional head cleaner and chamois swabs and cleaned heads. Picture was beautiful ! Played a few tapes and rewound and snowy picture again. Cleaned heads again. Perfect picture and played different tapes, rewound and snowy picture again !

ANy idea why after a few plays the picture gets snowy ? These tapes play fine in other betamax machine ....please email at above address if have any thoughts.

To Dean; Just a few thoughts regarding your problem. First if the tape in not damaged, you may just be able to adjust the tracking control to get a good picture the 2nd time around! You may have a tape tension adjustment problem or need a new reel belt or idler tire. I recommend a professional for the tension adjustment, but you ca replace the reel belt and or idler tires yourself and see if this helps . Try replacing these items one at a time and see what happens. Sadly a worn Video head is also a possibility !

Good Luck! Allan A. Smith

Dear Michael, dont take the suggestion of some missing signal on the tape serious. After all iff You insert a blank tape the VCR still would work! The signals after recording would be: the video signal, the audio signal and the CTL Pulse for synchronisation purposes.Sometimes when a tape has not been used the windings get suck by some static reasons. As in PLAY mode the friction of the clutch is in the 60 gramm range, a stuck tape would never be able to be payed back.Three things You might try:1. Wind and rewind the tape several times(this should be done from time to time anyway)2. remove cover, on the left hand side is the Tape Slack Sensor. You will easily locate this sensor when You load the tape. The sensor is very agile and is shiftet back and forth when the tape is threaded in.Gently apply more or less preasure with Your finger through this leaver. Be carefull or You will distroy the tape. Once the tape has started to wind, press STOP and then FF.3. If You have another damaged tape remove the casing and put the tape You want to rescue into the empty casing. Again be very carefull dissasemblind and reasembling the tape casing.Good luckClaus the Owl

Hello All,

I found this site on a search. Nice to see a forum for beta! I currently own 2 superbetas, an SL-HF650 and an SL-HF900. I'd like to know whether it's possible to dupe DVD onto either one. I've had no problems with duping VHS. I'd try the DVD but I'll have to get behind my entertainment center and shift cables around. So I thought I'd ask for advice from anyone who might have already tried it.

Thanks - Darren

To the people with the jitters (sorry-I couldn't resist). Just some thoughts You could check the pinch roller to see if its worn (It will have a shiny and/or cracked appearance. The P.R. can be dressed (if you know how) or replaced. 2ndly (not for amateurs) take a pencil, while playing a tape with the cover off the machine so you can see the tape path and ggggently insert inside the playing tape as far away from the video head as is possible. gently apply a slight pressure (pulling the tape out fron the tape path slightly. Observe your picture on the TV. If the jitter dissappears you may have a tape tension problem!(Caution do not do this test for longer than 30 seconds at a time). Alternatively look at the tape path to see if mthere is any dirt and/or an object directly in the way that the tape is tripping over (I once found a penny in this position).. Other problem posibilities 1.) Cassete carriage not compleatly loading (seating)the tape, Audio Control head out of adjustment! It is well known in the Building in which I live that I talk to much!

Best Wishes - Allan A. Smith

I have recently bought a Sony SL?? Betamax Videomachine from a pawnshop. It still looks good. It worked properly for a day! At the moment it plays properly for a second and then the TV screen goes blank. And the counter stops, only when I do the picture search forwarding or press pause does it then play or picture appears on my screen. I have opened it up, cleaned the heads and watched what happens if I press play. The cassette does move but no picture! Does someone out there have an answer of what might be happening.

re : SL-C7 with jitter on picture and flutter on the sound :During the mid 80's I repaired quite a few betamax vcr's,one failure which was not uncommon for older SL-C7 's was seized capstan motor. it's direct drive I think ? i.e. the motor shaft was the capstan spindle (sorry ..I haven't been inside a vcr for 12 or more years !). I think the symtoms you describe are the early stages of bearing failure. I think that 3 screws hold the motor in place .. try releasing it and give it a manual spin.I don't know if you can lubricate it ... beware leaving ANY oil on the splindle !!! Of all the SL-C7 's , C9 's , F1 's that I repaired I cannot recall many (if any) casptan motor servo faults, the servos were (are) very reliable. good luck . JER

blank pix in play ... ok in pause ... you've lost Control Track Pulses. There are several things to check.

1. Try cleaning the Audio/CTL head (ACE)... one edge of the tape (upper I think) has the linear audio track, while the other edge carries the CTL pulses laid down during recording.2. See if the tape is riding too high or too low past the ACE ... this can happen if there is crud on the capstan or pinch wheel.3. Unfortunately, this last reason may be the most likely, look for signs of ACE wear ... quite common on beta's over 5 years old .. i guess this one must be 15 !3.

The Beta Gods Have Forsaken Me

Well I decided to do a smart thing and get this damned SL-2700 I'd just aquired looked at by a professional. Since I couldn't get it looked at till March I decided to put the thing in the basement where it would be reletivly safe. This of course angered the gods, who can't stand to see me get even a meager crumb of happiness. A patch of black ice in the driveway (I have to go outside to get to the basement) did it in...

The damage seemed slight (a minor but fixable dent on the cabinet) but when I put in a tape to test - a grinding sound (and no picture) told me the the heads were done for...

Guess I just can't have nice things...

If anyone wants a dead SL-2700 for parts, make an offer...

Madness, that's because this is a super-rare model. It came out in 1983 when Beta HiFi was introduced, and to date is still the ONLY portable Beta HiFi made. I recently picked one up from a guy in Florida, but it has a tape stuck inside it. The 7300 could operate on batteries (like the SL-2000) or by AC power, had a built-in tuner AND timer, and stood upright! Audio quality was fine, but video quality was typically Sanyo!!!

O.K. I have fixed Beta Vcrs also and I cannot say that the sony Video quality was better than Sanyo's. I prefer Sanyos picture and I have several machines that produce a great quality picture!! Unlike many Sony Superbeta units whose recordings cannot be played on a regular Beta of anybrand because the audio recording produces visual interference! I do not have this problem with my Sanyos. Also I have some recordings that were made 15 years ago on a Sanyo Superbeta that are still in perfect condition. Despite the fact that Sanyos sold cheaper their picture quality was at least as good as Sonys' additionally they were sturdy units which rarely broke down other than thru normal wear & tear . Anybody who looks down on them without good reason is in my opinion a FOOL!!! Allan A. Smith

Do you know if that portable Sanyo HiFi (which I think was also known as the VTCH-5) has/had a camera socket. As for the Sanyo vs Sony debate I have to go with my trusty Sanyo 4400. Sonys keep crapping out on me while Sanyos (when they break down) are much easier to fix and modify (I changed the reel drive from a two tyre system to a tyre and gear system and added a cable tuner) as they use more standardized and more modular componants.

Mind you Sonys in general had more features and keep the tape spooled on the reel unlike Sanyo which unthreaded the tape every time you pressed stop.....

Yes, that Sanyo 7300 definitely has a camera jack on the side. I didn't mean to put down Sanyo's video or contruction quality, I think the Sony's were better built AND had better video quality. Sony Betas never had that thread/unthread feature like the early VHS machines, and I'll guarantee you that they bring higher bucks on eBay than the Sanyo's, which were loss-leaders and actually helped to keep the Beta format flourishing for years!

No question Sony had the name and you paid for it but now out of curiosity I suggest you check ebay.com under beta vcr and betamax and see which brand is getting the most bids and the better prices! You'll find its SANYO!! AS for threading loading vs stationary thread, its a heck of alot easier to remove a tape that isn't already threaded to say nothing of having a threaded tape leave crud on the head or melt or tear ect.

Attention camera experts. I have an Akai VC-X2E (1983, camera only) that produces reasonably good definition, but when viewing colour images (live or recorded) on a TV screen, there are noticeable areas of magenta and green around the screen - just as if the TV has been near a magnetic field and in need of degaussing (the TV is fine). What is wrong? has the saticon tube seen better days? is there anything I can try to sort out the problem? Thanks.

Have been informed that I may be having to move all my stuff real soon and have been going through it to see what can be tossed before the move. Notcied that I have a Radio Shack beta VCR- the super beta one which is the same as a Sanyo 7250 (Model 22 I belive) that I had been trying to sell off about a year ago all packed up (with remote conrtol) and ready to ship to someone who had been telling me he'ld send me a cheque for it. The unit worked fine when I tested it prior to packing it up- the only fault is that the flap covering some of the controls had been reattached to the deck with tape after the little plastic hinges went bust. If anyone is interested the first $120 gets it shipped to you anywhere in the United States.

Alan .a. smith I'm with you ALL THE WAY in regards to the Sanyo/Sony debate. I've also noticed that Sony Video /Betamax is always considered the BEST and sanyo's "cheap and Cheerful".I have in my possession a Sanyo vtc M20 +M30 and 5000,they ALL work perfectly (the former i've had from new) and i've only replaced the reel drive motor on the M20 and the 'idlers' on both machines. I will say that definition is not very sharp but the pictures are fantasticly smooth and clear.I've recordings made on these machines since 1985!! and they are ALL perfect. I did own for a short while a Toshiba V31b but this caused me a LOT of trouble with this tape permanently laced ,and not to mention it wore up rapidly 5 of my 'cherished 'recordings!! The Sanyo machines deserve a lot more credit than they usually get ,not only for excellent value but logically designed and SO easy to work on in regards to repairs.Sony may be a high tech manufacturer (for which i have the highest regard) but so too are Sanyo (although their marketing stratedgy is usually ..value).check out the quality of their latest DVD player if you on't believe me....but i digress. We are talking BETAMAX here and i prefer Sanyo's un-lacing ,as i have yet to replace video heads on any of my machines(or have upper drum wear),as you can see 'swings and roundabouts'. I hope i have opened your minds to this and as they say you 'pays your money and makes your choice'.........Kevin

My deceased aunt left me two Betamax tapes that are precious to me--they contain many childhood memories. However, I don't have the resources to dub this tape 3 times to share it with my family (we live hundreds of miles apart). I'm wondering if someone in Chicago might have a betamax recorder to sell cheaply or to rent cheaply--one that I could patch into my VHS recorder at home and make some dubs. Are there other ways to play Betamax tapes on VHS recorders (adapters, for example?) Thanks, everybody!!

more re : SL-C7 with jitter on picture and flutter on the sound : this is a long shot but, have the video heads been changed on the machines in the past ? (check the state of the solder on the leads). I have seen no mention on any of the PAL site pages of the use of an 'eccentricity guage' when replacing the video head disc. Could it be that the rotation of the disk is so far out that it 'batters' the tape ? All models prior to the SL-C9 and SL-F1 (i.e . 8000, 8080, C7 , C5, C6 and SL-TM7E) require the use of an eccentricity guage when replacing the video head disc because of the very loose fit of the disc on the hub. Later models ( SL-C9 etc.) followed the VHS principle of using a tight clearance fit. JER

I finally found some Betamax videos here in Big Rapids, Michigan which is virtually in the middle of no where. Yesterday I was just looking around Goodwill Industries here in town, and I found two betamax videos. They both appear to be blank, but one of them was unrapped, and the other was shrink rapped. The only thing missing was the recorder, if anyone from around Michigan has a recorder that is in good shape, and is in need of a good home let me know.

For Sale;

SPINNAKER educational tape set (4 tapes) Beta NTSC in origional box

These were put out by the Spinnaker company in the mid 80s and include two tapes for reading and two for math. They include workbooks (the previous owner's kids filled them in somewhat but they can be erased)

Tape 1: Add Adventures of the Time Taxi (ages 5-8)Tape 2: Close Encounters of the Math Kind (ages7-11)Tape 3: Raiders of the Lost Alphabet (ages 5-8)Tape 4: The Search for the Stolen Sentence (ages 7-11)

Lessons are taught using Muppet-type characters in entertaining situations (My guess is that they're Sid and Marty Kroft puppets). Ordinarily I'd just erase these if I wasn't going to use them but these might be of use to a Beta fan with kids (and I have enough blank tape to last till retirement...). Or to someone who like puppets in educational videos...

I'm asking $25 plus shipping for the set. E-mail [email protected]

Have a Sanyo VCR, Beta I/II unit about 15 years old. Looks like we're having trouble getting and keeping the heads clean. No one in this area has Beta equipment in the stores anymore and our old cassette head cleaner just isn't doing it. Any suggestions. (We are do-it-yourselfers, just need some suggested cleaning methods.)

i heard a rumor where you can buy a vhs type type that fits a beta tape. so essentially you can watch beta tapes on a typical vcr. a friend of mine owns about 900 beta movie tapes and doesn't want to convert using betamax but would like some sort of tape like this. is this a myth or reality? and if true, where do you get such a thing?

thanks!

Question: Have Sony HF550. Plays and records fine, but for some reason, there's no video when the unit it connected to the TV via the A/V's (audio only). However it will give video when connected via the RF (75-ohm) output. So assuming that the same circuit feeds composite video to both the V-out jack and the RF modulator, would anyone happen to know why one works and not the other? Also, what could be done to check or repair it? That's like the only problem w/ this 550, and I like to connect my machines w/ A/V's.

To Alice:

The rumor you heard is just that, a rumor. It would be impossible for a VHS machine to read a beta tape. Even though they are both ½" formats, they differ in the way the info is recorded on the tape. Likewise, it would be impossible, to say, spool recorded VHS tape into a beta shell and expect it to play on a betamax.

That having been said, if your friend has 900 beta tapes and no beta machine (or a non-working one), then he/she could try eBay (www.ebay.com), for starters. Search for 'betamax' or 'beta vcr'. If they wish to share recordings w/ you or others, then most likely the only choice would be to dupe to VHS (hence the need for a machine).

I have a Toshiba Beta Model VS36.It's the stereo HI-FI model from 1983.I bought the unit last year off of e-bay.It has a problem with dashes shooting across the picture.I've worked on vcrs as a hobby for the past ten years and what I see points to the video heads going bad except that when I set the unit on it's left side the lines almost all go away. I've tried adjusting the back tension and adjusting the tape path plus anything else that gravity might remotely affect. Both the capstain and video drum spins free.I'am stumped! While the unit is on it's side I can't make the lines and dashes re-appear no matter what I do. Also when I record on this vcr then play it back on another vcr the picture that was recorded is crystal clear--no lines!I cleaned the static discharge on the video heads. Any ideas?

Hi I have 2 Sony Betamax player/recorders for sale. The first is an SL-25 with remote. It works and looks great. I'd take $45.00 for that one. Then I have an SL-5200 HI-FI thats been repaired before but now has a new problem, It accepts tapes but then ejects them. so it needs repair. It looks great cosmeticly! And it too, has a remote. I'd take $20.00 for that one. And I have about 80 to 90 Beta tapes that have been recorded on. Just a couple are blank. No guarentee on how the tapes play because the ones recorded on the SL-5200 after that first repair don't play real well on the SL-25 now. The tapes are how ever in good condition and have allways been stored in the house and should record well in the future. I'd take $25.00 for all of those. I'd let all 3 go for $65.00 plus shipping and handling. Thats $65.00 for 2 Sony Betamax's and 80 plus tapes. as you may know Beta player/recorders are heavy so I do not know how much it would cost to ship to your address. I do live in Southern California USA. I'm sorry I did not say that in my previous message. e-mail me If your interested! thanks Mark..

No way on earth does Betamax have 1000 lines of resolution!

I'd say somewhere between 260-300. For reference, DVD has about 500, as does domestic DV tape.

Madness; I'm not sure I understand your question correctly, could you rephrase it! Meanwhiles if the TV has seperate jack inputs for audio&video you wont see a picture if you plug a video signal into the audio input jack (wrong frequency). Generally speaking Betas seperate a/v output signals right to the output jacks, the R>F> Modulator contains a signal combiner circuit for output. Best Wishes ; Al Smith

We have a Sony Beta Video machine with tuner (SL 2000 & TT 2000), carrying case and camera (Sony HVC 2000). These were purchased brand new in 1983. Low milage and all in exceptional condition. What might this whole package be worth and who would buy such an old system. Does it have any special value or otherwise. It has been sitting on my mother's console stereo for years and it is rarely used. Time to get rid of it. Any thoughts?

Allan, I meant that on my 550, the video out jack is dead. But the RF is not. So I only get a picture thru the RF. Audio only if it's connected w/ the A/V outs.

Hi...

I'm looking for a good used beta VCR. It doesn't have to be anything special...something like the SL-100 that is in good condition and will play all my old Beta tapes. Does anyone here know where I can find one? I've been looking on eBay, where there are a number but the bidding seems to get pretty high on them. Is there another good source for Beta machines?
