Looks as if someone has seen our site!

Also looks as if someone has a good sense of humour rearding the announcement of a new VCR above. I doubt that Sony people would be out and working the net on Sunday!

I have howver heard that Sony did announce a new deck coming out in an aricle in the Des Moines register on teh 12th or 13th of last month. Have been unable to track this down although alos heard that a similair story was in the Chicago Tribune last weekend, which i have alos been unable to confirm.

To Howard, Pepse, and John; Check out EBAY item #1226688595 (www.ebay.com) It will shed some light onto the Sanyo VCR-7200 debate (Standard vs Stereo vs SuperBeta ect.)Look at the picture!! Allan

P.S. The term Hi Fidelity refers to Monaural(one track) Sound and Stereo always has more than one recording track!

Hi. In regards to the Hi-Fi, Stereo, Superbeta, etc thing. I will try my best to clear it up.Mono refers to one channel of audio. Stereo refers to two channels, left and right. The terms linear and Hi-Fi with VCR's refers to how the sound is recorded on the tape. Linear sound is recorded in a straight line (like standard audio cassettes) along the edge of the tape. Hi-Fi sound is recorded in the area where the video is recorded with the video heads (NTSC Betamax), or seperate heads located on the same disc as the video heads (PAL Betamax and VHS). This gives it much higher head to tape speed, resulting in much higher quality audio. All Hi-Fi sound on Beta and VHS VCR's is stereo. Now as to Beta vs. Superbeta. Beta has 240 lines of resolution for NTSC and 260 for PAL, which is the same as VHS, though the recording quality of Beta is better :) Superbeta records at 280 lines of resolution for NTSC (300 for PAL? I haven't found any clear info on this) and also gives slightly more bandwidth for the chroma and luma (color and brightness). From my experience though, I can't really tell the difference between Beta and Superbeta in BII or BIII speed, but supposedly it's more noticable in BI speed. As to the Sanyo 7200 debate, it's a Hi-Fi VCR, but not Superbeta. The only Superbeta/Hi-Fi VCR Sanyo made is the 7250. Sanyo also made one or two Superbeta mono VCR's. I hope this info clears things up a bit.

I dont want to buy a new one cause the one i have was working perfectly until now.could some one tell me if theres other way to disable the security mode? ive tried to find it out, but there are four digits, and every time you enter the wrong code it shuts off. so it takes too much time.by the way its a 31" pro-ponent mts, stereo dbx.please, if some one knows something, let me know about.

Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone out there has any tapes recorded off air of UK channels from before 1985, on any format, Betamax, U-matic, Philips 1500/1700, or even VHS? I am a tv historian and am always on the lookout for recordings of old shows that are not generally available. If anyone has anything along those lines that they could let me either buy, beg steal or borrow, please contact me, and I'll more than happy to hear from you.

I was just given a very clean Betamax SL-2000 portable recorder. On the back it has something called a Multi connector. This looks like a little ribbon connector with 26 pins in two lines of 13 pins each. I'm a video pro and used to BNC (or at least RCA) type connectors. Can anyone e-mail me with the pinouts for this connector? And does anyone still sell the weird 14 pin camera connector for this thing? Thanks.

Dave Brown, as for your need for a service manual and/or operators manual I don't know what it would be similar to. I looked at a new (to me)website I recently came across and didn't find the SL-HF99ES listed. Mind you the list for Sony on that site is extremely long and did show a serv. manual for the Sony SL-C9ES, which I presume is the Great Britain version so that might work. I will mention this site momentarily, but just to mention; vcr manuals are $34.95 US, camcorder manuals are $64.95 US, but if your device has an "M" after it it will cost $5.00 more. They also list most of the industrial "SLO" Betas as well as the GCS 50. Also, they seem to have just about every type of electronic manual you might need. They don't give an address but they mention to email them for more information, they are out of Colorado, USA. There webpage is: http://www.tech-wiz.com . Go to the "manuals" page. As for the remote I would imagine any universal remote should do, unless of course it's a wired remote. Later. Pepse.

K. Arnold, I do not know what feedback, if any, you have had, but here's my contribution.

Many years ago(1980's), you could purchase an electronic box that allowed you to use a video camera with a VCR that did not have a camera socket. The camera was plugged into this adapter, as it had a normal 10 pin camera socket, although I know Beta cameras had 14 pins, unlike VHS which had 10. Adapters to convert 14 to 10 pins were also available. I know, as I still have one of these. The box provided the camera with power and an output, using BNC and/or phono sockets, to the video recorder. Also there would normally be a pause control socket(normally a mini jack). The VCR, obviously has to have video/audio inputs and if the pause function is required, a dedicated mini jack socket. You will probably only find the later on old models of video. I think the only way you will be able to get one of these devices, is to purchase one second hand.

Is your C5 completely dead? If not, you should be able to use it to power the camera and feed the signal from this into another video recorder.

Hope this helps. Regards, Steve Szmidt

Try some Ethnic Video Tape rental stores- stores that specialize in movies for specific ethnic groups(for example near me is a Russian Video Rental Store that provides this service). Good Luck !! Help: Fault identification

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my lovely Betamax video recorder? It appears to record a programme, but when you go to view the programme no picture plays back - the screen is blank. If one uses the search facility then the recorded programme appears to be there, but when play is pressed again the picture disappears again. There is no sound, although the tape appears to be playing. The video will play back perfectly any programme recorded prior to the development of the fault, but now when attempting to record a programme nothing appears, apart from two or three seconds at the beginning of the recording.

Oh, but you CAN play beta tapes through a VHS machine. All I have to do is hook up a special SL-2000/TT-2000 "adapter" hooked up to the AV in jacks of my Sony SLV-N50 VHS VCR. Since this "adapter" has recording capability I've reversed the hookup to record off the SLV-N50's "cable box eliminator" which make it a VHS -> Beta adapter I guess...

By the way anyone looking for an SL-F1E PAL Beta "adapter" should go to http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1228149062 where one is listed on E-bay. I'm not sure if this is a PAL unit or a Japanese/Latin American unit as units there sometimes use the European numbering system.... or is that the other way around? Guess it depends on your point of view.

Without the device that is currently being talked about,(sounds pretty expensive) you can play a tape on a Beta machine and record a copy OR play it thru the input of a VHS machine (assuming no copyguard) or Vice Versa by hooking up a connector cable from the output of the playing the recording to the input jack of the recieving machine( The R.F. Modulators output an identical type of signal! But generally you can't do this for format i.e. NTSC to NTSC only or PAL to PAL only. NO PAL TO NTSC OR VICE VERSA!!!

However, if I fastforward the recorded tape, I do see the recorded image at the fast forward speed, but once I return to normal playback speed thereisn't any sound or picture. Hi,GREAT CHAT PAGE! I know that this is a pal site, but this problem is related to an NTSC VCR so please excuse me :)I recently ordered a nice Sony sl-hf300 unit from a friend in Chicago. I know the unit worked, and it worked very well so I had him pack it very well to prevent damage to the unit as it was getting shipped 300 miles via the Postal service. Needless to say, 4 days late the box arrived with a nice size dent in one of the corners. When I went to plug the unit in, it "cycled" and the tape in indicator lit. I cannot get the unit to accept a tape, pressing eject will cycle the unit, but the cassette tray will not move. If I power off the unit and try to insert a tape, the machine powers up, but the tape does not get "sucked" in. I have experimented and I can get a tape in by pressing eject, the rollers will retract, then if I move the arm next to the motor, the process will actually cycle, the tape gets sucked in. If I release the arm, the other gear moves and draws the tape to the head and it plays! The unit plays great! Unfortunately I do not want to rip the thing open every time I go to play a tape. Before I file an Insurance claim and never see the unit agian, I was wondering if anyone knows what could be wrong? The "arm" I am referring to is the arm that stops one gear and allows another to move. Primarily controls the loading Mech. and the rollers, etc to draw the tape into the head or back into the cassette.Any help is greatly appreciated!Andy

PS I also had a Sanyo 7200 die recently, which is the reason I picked this one up. When I stopped the unit, it Powered down one day. I turn it back on and the entire light panel is dead! I cannot control any of the functions on the front panel (play, RW,etc still work but not the audioo levl and audio indicators. Clock works but I cannot PROGRAM it. The thing still plays fine, but the front panel is dead in parts with no lights. Any Ideas? I sold it on Ebay, but just curious as to what it might have been? Also the channels in the tv tuner have audio but the video is black with intermittent color "ghosts" that will pop on the screen? Wierd! Thanks for any help!Andy

I have a Sony SL-HFR70 which recently developed this problem. When plugged in, the display will light up (either normally or with all symbols together) but the power does not go to any other function including the HiFi processor. Can anyone advise me on the problem and its solution? Thanks.

I have a bunch of old beta home movies and can't seem to convert them to VHS. The old beta machine still works and I can play the tapes, but can'trecord to my VHS. If you know how to do this, please let me know. Or ifyou know anyone or a business in the States (in Massachusetts, New York City or the DC area) who will do it for me, I'd really appreciate it!

Still looking for the reel motor assembly for my SL-HF 450. The Toshiba VM-415 I own just died i't a reel motor problem. it might be the belt(too streched out to work) or the motor(may no longer have the umph to get the flyweel moving) this one is hard to call. It will also need minor speed adjustments because I tried to remedy the problem by adjusting those ptentiometers (pretty easy to fix if you know how your tape sounds and looks) I am taking offers on the Toshiba. P.S. I like the way the message center automaticly recognized my name and email nice job!

Well fixing your f1 tuner should be easy, just do it like you fix everything else, crack it open, just use a hammer its quicker, then use the guts from some inferior sanyo machine, they are all alike you know and interchangeable, then sit and cry for a week as it wont work, then have a stroke of luck only to be cut down again at the last minute to have to beg for mommies credit card so you can go rampant on ebay buying someone elses problem again.

Ohh and did I forget you need to fill it with chewing gum?

There you go mad beta collector, that shpould fix it up in about 2 secs!

To Alex Codeglia:

2710s were made in a time when there was much less integrated devices as today, so there are LOTS of electronics inside them. First thing, get the schematics, and wish for luck !

to Gerald:

Your problem comes from a faulty ACE head which cannot record/read a control track on your tapes. It may have got worn with tape passage, it may be short, or maybe there is a big error in the tape path.

On a lighter note I recently went to Target to buy a new cleaner tape and found a Scotch VCR Head Cleaner that didn't use the liquid abrasive formula. It appears to be the same stuff that's in my old Beta head cleaning cassette. I belive the message on the tape could be used for a Beta in this way

1. copy the on screen message using a third VCR it doesn't matter what type as long as it isn't the same one you plan to use for the second recording.

2. trim off the clear VHS leader tape and splice on the old silver beta leader tape carefully wind the tape into an existing beta tape shell and splice and repeat the splicing process at the end of the tape.

3.Re record the on screen message with your beta if the picture and/or sound are crummy record the message again because the heads must have been dirty. if the message.

The need to re transfer the message is be cause VHS and Beta playback speeds are incomparable

Good luck A. Choate creator/editor of the BetaLore II website

Greetings, all! I just acquired 2 beta decks, used, from a thrift ship (Goodwill) for about $40. One is a Sony SL-HF900 and the other is an NEC VC-N20EU. The Sony deck doesn't seem to work, however. If I load a tape, it accepts it, but won't play, ff, rew, etc. I simply hear a noise like the motor idling out of gear.

I called a Sony authorized repair center that was listed in the phone book but they told me they no longer service Betas. Does anyone know of a place to fix this 900 (USA, New England area)? It looks like a pretty nice hifi deck.

The NEC, on the other hand, seems to work fine. It plays, records, etc., and would be nice except that it's a mono unit that only records BII/BIII. It's also missing the remote but a universal will work it (Sony came w/ remote!).

Using the NEC, I duped some movies from VHS rental tapes over to a couple of L-750's, using both BII & BIII. I was quite surprised at the picture quality, say, compared to these same movies duped to VHS @ EP. Picture was nice and clear; I'd swear nearly as good as the VHS source.

Therefore, I'd be really happy to get that Sony repaired to have the hifi sound to go w/ the picture and would really like to start a collection of Beta. Incidently, a good source for inexpensive blanks (L-500 &/or 750 -- even used) would also be appreciated. I can find some at RadioShack but they usually have to order them.

Thanx, Madness

Hvae just had a weird problem and was wondering if anyone else has ever experienceed anything similair.

I have some older, no HiFi tapes, tapes recorded for me by friends in the mid 1980's which I recently decided to try playing in my SL-HF 950. And when playing them they did not want to track right, or consintently, and tended to be very grainy. Flipping the Super Beta switch helped but did not eliminate this. Figuring that the tapes might have gone bad or something I then tried them in my SL HF 100 which had them play perfectly with the tracking control in the middle. Newer tapes play fine in either machine and was wondering if anyone else has noticed anything like this. Do not really want to take the 950 in for repairs with an "imagined" problem.
