B.A.,

The SL-5400 is an old consumer deck from 1979; although it will play BI, BII, and BIII, it will only edit and dub in BII and BIII. The 5400 is also only a regular-Beta monaural sound deck, and does not have Beta Hi-Fi or linear stereo capability, nor does it have any insert-editing capability. If you really have to, I guess you can use the SL-5400 for some basic studio applications, but its capability in this area is fairly limited. If you have any other options, I would recommend getting a Sony GCS-50 or atleast a SLO-383 Beta editor to be your main studio Beta. The GCS-50 has all the modern editing features you need (indexing, BIs and BII editing and dubbing, insert editing with flying erase head, Super-Beta Hi-Fi and linear stereo capability, and compatibility with various Sony editing controllers), while the older SLO-383 offers linear stereo, BI editing and dubbing, and insert editing with flying erase head and compatibility with Sony editing controllers. Both the GCS-50 and the SLO-383 appear periodically on ebay for sale; I think either one of these two decks is the way to go if you want to use a Beta as part of a studio set-up. Good luck. Howard

I'm in the Western US. I have quite a number (hundreds) of quality used Beta video tapes to sell. These are mostly old recordings that can be salvaged as-is, or recorded on as your needs require. I've sold hundreds of these on Ebay, and elsewhere, for $1 each. Make a reasonable offer in units of 60 tapes each. Please contact me! I need my spare room back!!!!

Wow, I can't believe there are actually people here, a decade since the last BetaVCR was introduced. I've always gone with the superior (but less popular) technology. Apple Macintosh instead of IBM compatibles, Netscape instead of Internet Exploder, and, had I been born early enough, Beta rather than VHS.

There's a Sony store in the mall close to where I live, and it always has crates of Beta tapes in stock, I don't why the sites say people are scrambling to get ahold of blank tapes.

Anyway, does anyone know how Beta EP stands up to DVD?

Hello. Apologies for using the forum this way, but I have two Sony Betamax machines, in various states of disrepair, which I need to dispose of. I thought I'd try here first, to see if anybody would like to take them off my hands. The first is a C7 - the casing is broken, there is a tension problem (which I fixed once, and it worked fine for two years, but it has gone again), and is in generally tatty condition. The top-load lid is missing. The second is a C6mkII. While cosmetically in excellent condition, it runs at the wrong speed. I know this machine to have been very well looked-after in the past, and I seem to recall it had new heads fitted not long before it failed.I don't want anything in exchange for them, but I would like to dispose of them within the next couple of weeks. I married recently, and my wife would like to see them go! (She knows full well that I have been intending to "have a go" at fixing them for over three years now, and as I already have a fully functional Beta deck, I really can't make excuses any more.)They're good for spares if nothing else. I am based in East London, and the machines would have to be collected as I am without personal transport. However, they're free to the first person to get in touch via email, if anybody wants them, otherwise they'll (sadly) be disassembled and thrown away at the end of the month.

All the best,

Martin Fenton.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing a JVC Betamax deck. It was at JVC's factory in Yorkshire, which I was visiting on business. While I was there, my contact, Gary, showed me a prototype Beta deck that JVC UK made in 1977. They were seriously considering putting it into production for a while. They only made three prototypes, and the machine I saw is the only one of its kind that still exists. It had large piano-keys, was a top-loader, and looked very similar to the early VHS decks that appeared the following year.

Richie H/David Hadaway and anyone else interested, I did an experiment today and can confirm that certainly up to the last UK Betamax model, the SL-HF950, the format can copy a DVD or VHS pre recorded film, encoded with Macrovision, with perfect results(no flashing or loss of colour). However, do not forget this is illegal! I was not aware that DVD had a stronger version of Macrovision.

Henry, to transfer, or transmit as you put it, Betamax to VHS, just link a Beta VCR up to a VHS via video/audio in/out sockets for best results or use the RF in/out sockets. Then play the tape to be transferred in the Beta VCR and with the VHS loaded with a blank tape, press record and hey presto you will get an inferior VHS copy! If you require further details contact me by email.

Regards,

Steve.

I have an SL-HF 400 that has a problem. The head shuts down and the capstan speeds up. I tried another capstan as well as another control board (the board under the tape mechanisim) and it did the same thing. The strange thing about it is that this occurs every few months, and then suddenly it will go back about its business for a few months. I removed the bad glue from the head motor, no avail. Anybody have any ideas? I'm looking for a new Super beta if anybody has one and willing to ship to canada.

I wonder if it would be possible for the creators of this chat page to arrange the message record so that the first message would always read NO YOU CANNOT PLAY A BETA TAPE ON A VHS MACHINE, NOR IS THERE A ADAPTOR FOR THIS PURPOSE! If this is done for a limited time period for example 6 months I suspect this would solve the problem by conditioning people to believe the truth(like pavlovs' dog salivating every time it heard a bell ringing).

I currently own and SLHF-950, Sl-F1 ,SLC20, SLC30 and a Toshiba Vr31

The 950 is working fine but doesn't like older prerecorded tapes. I get banding like a bad tracking bar moving down the screen, this continues to move even when the tape is paused. Otherwise it give a crystal clear picture on newer tapes and recordings.

The SL-F1 has the upper drum fault, but I'm having problems getting into the casing to investigate - I can only get the bottom off the machine - any tips?

Could I use the upper drum from the SLC20 or 30 to fix this. I've given up trying to fix the SLC30 as I just can't work out where to put that plastic washer to help the motor bearings - I've had the whole thing apart down to the section containing the reels but couldn't suss it - does anyone have intructions on doing this ?

The VR31 seems to be OK for Playback but the head is too worn to record well. I can get a new head, but is there anywhere round here (Cambridge, UK) that would fit it ? - I notice LRC aren't doing Betamax stuff anymore :-(

Thanks,[email protected]

Have a couple of Beta decks I am willing to unload- getting too many of them sitting around. They are in working order.

First is Sony SL-800 - this is the last top of the line multi standard Betamax- will do PAL/ NTSC/ Secam and just about everything else- does Super Beta in NTSC at Beta 2 & 3. I do not have the remote for this and a universal one will not work- although one for a Sony SL HF 100 does. Is missing the flap, that covers some of the buttons. Cost is $ 200.

Second is Radio Shack Model 20- same as Sanyo 7250- Sanyo's bet NTSC Beta machine- I have the remote for this one it is a super Beta and HiFi. Price $125.

These are located in Illinois.

I also have a couple of NTSC top loding Snayo (or Snayo built decks) that one can have for $10 plus shipping. I sort of wound just wound up with these and they did work when I got them.

I wish people would get real when it comes to requesting scanned pdfs of manuals - the C9 manual comprises hundreds of pages for god's sake! We're all into helping each other here, but (1)can you provide a scan of this video's complete service manual, (2)can you direct me to a widget for playing my Beta tapes on a VHS machine and (3)my video does 'this', what component (of thousands) do I have to change, are getting a bit tiresome now....

Much as video is an 'enthusiasts' thing, it is also very technical, I'm sorry, there are few quick fixes!

I'm trying to purchase some Beta tapes for my SLHF-950ES so I can use it in Super Beta Pro mode. I've just had the video heads replaced and theunit overhauled and would now like to purchase new blank tapes. It seems that the original Pro-X tapes are no longer available, at leastin Australia where I live. So time back I purchased some tapes whilein Japan, the tapes where Sony Master Hg. These seemed to work wellin Super Beta Pro mode. I've never seen the tapes available any whereelse. Does anyone know the highest grade tapes currently available forBeta? Betacam tapes are far too expensive in Australia to be a contender at AUS$90.00 per tape. Any help appreciated

I guess I have had a love for Betamax from an early age, even though we have never owned one in my family. When our turn came to own a Video Machine, it was a Panasonic VHS machine. And Betamaxes were slowly on their way out. Last year (2000)I acquired a Betacam cassette, and that set me off on my search for a Betamax machine.

I found one, and it was an Sony SL-C30 and was sold as is. And I went on a search for Betamax cassettes too. The Machine gave me pleasure for a day! And then it stopped working. I kept on searching, and found a Sony C7. Only the Tuner was working. I kept on Searching until I found a Sony BMC-100 Betamovie and another Sony C7. The BMC 100 is the Best, only the batteries are failing me, do you know anyone who can rebuild NP11 Batteries? I am in South Africa. The New (old) C7 is not bad, that is if you can take a shaky picture and the frequent snow on TV, But the sound is okay, the tuner is fine. Funnily enough, the Sony SL - C30 works fine with the tapes that I have recorded from the BMC 100 but no sound. So I found an ingenious way. I record the sound using my Normal Audio tape recorder and then transfer the Visuals onto the VHS. This gives me the Chinese movie feel but it is okay, at least there is sound.

And Yesterday (17/05/01) I bought myself a Sanyo VTC 5000. I crossed my fingers, And Yay! It plays back perfectly sound and all. The only thing it does not do is record.

I just thought I should share this with everybody! And it is true what they say about the Picture Quality!

I have a Sony HiFi Processor (HFP 200 ) which attaches to the "HiFi -Ready" series of Sony Beta VCRs for sale at $75 shipping included. This thing is missing a few buttons but it still works and if you have an HFP-100 you can transfer the missing buttons. The 200 has an MTS Decoder and SAP capability so it's a good upgrade for the money even with the missing buttons. I also have some replacement boards for various Sanyo Betacorders that some repairperson might find useful, will trade all for repairs to a SLHF-300 thats missing it's videohead and couldn't properly record HiFi (which is why I'd ripped out the head thinking that I'd had a replacement) Speaking of which I have a bunch of Sanyo heads as well, though I can't guaruntee that they work.

I recently bought a Sony BMC-220 that works OK except for one minor glitch; I like to lay down a black screen for the start of any tape and for the interval for when I take the tape out to play it back and while the camcorder will tape over signals recorded by itself with minimal interference, when it tapes over the black signal or any signal produced by my Sanyo VCR-4400 the picture Sync rolls about three or for times and you can hear the sound if any from whatever was on the tape in the space between the erase head and the audio/control-track head. I've had 3 other BetaMovies and two have had the same problem.I'm guessing that the video head is a little worn. It still give a good picture after a few second though. Is this a systemic problem with the BetaMovie series? Any ideas on a fix?

Hello,I wondered if anyone could help me please? I have a very early Sanyo betamax machine (top loader, piano keys) which I use to transfer rare video tapes onto vhs. Well I USED to, as for some reason, the sound has simply died. I can get a perfect quality picture but absolutely no sound whatsoever. The audio output is via a 5 pin lead. Does anyone think I can cure this problem or is it time to scap the machine? Could there be an audio problem with the heads maybe which I could cure myself by cleaning? Any tips gratefully accepted.many thanksPete, Hastings

To 1.) Jenny I also would appreciate seeing a picture of this miracle of modern technology since BETA and VHS record and playback by different methods and at DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES! I have not yet seen yet a VHS cassette (with a switch yet!) sized device into which you place a BETA cassette and then insert into a VHS machine and play. YES INDEED I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A PICTURE OF THIS ITEM!!!

2.) To Peter; I don't think you have to junk out your Sanyo just yet particularly if it still records& plays back a good picture because Sanyo and many other companies still make Ic,s and Audio Heads ect that were originally made for Beta (they simply put them in their VHS machines when they stopped making Betas). Your problem if any will be in locating a Audio Head (there is a good chance that this is NOT the problem) because you said it was a very early model! In short take it to a Repair Shop (be sure to tell them its an AUDIO problem) call several first because many techs get nervous these days when you mention the word BETA until you find one thats willing and get it fixed! Its' not an expensive job even if you have to replace the Audio/Control head and I don't think that this is the problem!

Good Luck! Al Smith

I managed to fix my BMC220 by changing the audio/control track head. Turns out the origional head was just misspaced enough (by a millimeter to render the machine defective. Lucky I save the head from the previous BMC 220. Sometimes it pays to be a packrat. By the way I E-mailed some of you with some suggested fixes to your various Beta problems. I hape they prove useful enough. Let me know if they do.

Previous owner of a Sony SL 2710... had to change to VHS reluctantly. Recently donated it to Goodwill as power source conked out. I have dozens of taped music that I now wish to transfer to my Sony SLV 979 but I need to get a Beta Hi Fi as the host. Obviously, it must be Sony. I don't know where else to look. Help.

I have for sale a Zenith Beta model VR9775PT. It is a clone of the Sony SL-2500, the only differences are the location of the buttons as far as I know, and also the fact that the Zenith retailed for $1475, and the Sony for $1000, so maybe the Zenith is better? It is a slim line design. It has perfect freeze frame & frame advance in forward & reverse also known as swing search. Also has slo mo at 1/5 speed & 1/10 speed in forward & reverse and x2 playback. These features are all accessible on both the vcr and also the original remote I have that goes with it. Has regular tracking & slow tracking. Has tape remaining indicator, real time counter, camera jack for beta camera, beta stacker changer control (additional accessory), and operates very quietly, not like some of the Sonys that make a big clunking sound everytime you stop to rewind, ff, play, etc. Everything works perfectly and the cosmetic condition is excellent. There are no sratches what so ever on the face or the top. It is very rare to find one of these with the original remote. The price is $125 USD, I would like to sell here rather than list on Ebay, if I were to list on Ebay I would get $125 or more cause thats where the first bid would start at. Shipping will be exact cost which will be thru UPS if you live in the US or United States Postal Service if you live outside the US. Email me if interested.

Subj: fixxit yo-self & saveDate: Sunday, May 21, 2000 6:36:21 AMFrom: DasImperatorTo: [email protected]

I've had considerable experience with Sanyo Betas owning a vcr 4400 toploader right now and I can tell you that if yer willing to get yer hands dirty you can fix it yourself as the replacement parts will set you back the grand total of about a buck and a half as it's been my experience that the rubber "tires" on the idler wheel assembly have aged out and have to be replaced. The idler wheel sits between the reel drives and transfer power from the moter useing a tiny belt. The wheel its self has an upper and lower wheel that have little rubber O-ring tires. After carefully removing the tape ejector mechanism you'll find that the idler is held on by a small clip. Using a set of jeweller screwdriver pry the clip off and carefully stow it in a safe place (like the cover of your screwdriver case). When dissassembling keep an eye out for two sets of washers that are embedded inside the three part assembly. After removing the O-rings (there'll be one or two of them depending on if the top idler id geared or not) take them to a hardware or plumbing supply store for replacement. It shouldn't matter if the replacement is a rounded or flat ring just as long as it make contact with the reel drives and doesn't exceed the outer diameter of the origional ring. I've found that if it does it will cause a tape under certain circumstances not to be fully wound into it's case causing damage on ejection. If you can't readily find an appropriate O-ring and you haven't destroyed the old ones on removal, you can try any turn them inside out and remount them. If they merely hardened (from the machine heating them over the years and aren't too badly cracked you can try to sand off that hard outer crust with an emory board, being careful not to "flatten" them. Haing done all that its a matter of reversing your steps taking care that the middle plastic hub goes wider side down and dabbing the works with a little rubbing alchohol with a Q-tip for cleaning and you should have several more years of Beta HiFi enjoy-ment.

Don't the actions of large companies sometimes leave you wondering where there views on customer relations lie?

I need a bearing repair kit for the reel motor in a Sony C20. An enquiry via a parts supplier identified that the only source was directly from Sony. The only problem, the price - £87. Why?!

Due to limited demand Sony cannot be making these parts any more, the remaining stock is just taking up storage space, so why not sell them at normal, 'reasonable' prices?!

Beta enthusiasts everywhere fly the flag for Sony, so why treat us like lepers? Is this the way we are repaid? Maybe it is in the forelorn hope that if Beta spares are priced high enough, we might buy a Sony VHS machine instead.

So, has anyone got a working reel motor assembly from a C series machine please? Thanks.

RE: Stephan's Deutscher Beta page. I think there are several online translaters like Babelfish.com that might be able to help you.

Also a quick tip for BMC 550 users, the built-in switch setting for white balance seems to be better looking than than the manual white balance function (ie pushing the switch down to let the camera figure white balance instead of using the two presets...) as far as I can see it...

Well, I candefinately say that Steven.Wagner has something that looks very good. Excellent pics and diagrams; of coure I don't speak any foreign languages but hopefully someone gets this translated to English and American. Now is it possible to use this setup for any stereo Beta?? I have an SL-HF 750 and that looks like a very good investment. Chances are here in the US most any Radio Shack might have an S-video connector. I will check his site from time to time to see if there is a translation. Later. Pepse.

I do some digital video editing and have been asked if I can make digital tapes from a friends BetacamSP videos (about 75 cassettes). I assume I need a Beta vcr but other than this, what else would be needed -if it is possible? How would it need to be fed into the computer - S composit?

Above ^ You need a BETACAM SP video deck to digitize Betacam SP tapes. Not a BETAMAX video deck. There is a major difference between formats. Try renting or borrowing one from a video production house or a broadcast equipment rental facility. Betacam decks run into the $ 30, 000 range new so be prepared to start spending if you figure on buying one...

Hello, I'm new to this forum so forgive me if I'm asking a stupid question. I collect films, especially those released before video certification in the UK. As I am often offered films on Betamax, I thought it about time to try to pick up a second hand machine. Are there any suppliers of reconditioned / second hand machines in the UK, preferably London? Thanks for your help, Matt

Proof that Betamax IS still useful!

--Taken from an article in the online version of 'Wired'--

The recording industry continues its roll of legal victories, as a federal judge on Friday rejected Napster's request for a summary judgment which would have dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Recording Industry Association of America.

...cut...

"This was really a tune up for the main event," said Broussard. "The main event is going to be when Napster rolls out the Betamax defense, which will be very interesting."

Legal experts point to the 1983 case between Universal City Studios, which sued Sony over the creation and sale of the Betamax VCR. The judge in that case ruled that the sale of copying equipment isn't illegal if there are other non-infringing uses for the technology, which is why copy machines, cassette tape recorders, and computers are legal, said Broussard.
