HF100 Head Drum Problem....

Hi, I have a Sony HF 100. A fine machine. However, it seems to have developed a fault! After a very short time. The sead drum becomes unstable and then stops, refusing to move. After turning off for a couple of minutes, it will work again for a minute or so then fail again. It also makes a little more noise. I had this problem before, and was told that itis to do with the tuner! I replaced it with a tuner from a HF100 with a servo fault and it went away. On that occasion, the tunerkept drifting and I had to change channel every couple of hours! But the problem is back. This time the tuner does not appear to drift and when i swapped back, the head seemed not to move at all unlike the previous time when it would just be a pain.

does anyone know the problem. Can I still get the offending part? What board may it lie on if it is not the tuner?

Cheers

Eugene

HI. I'm new to your site. I am an acomplished video technician here in the states (Southern California). I have recently purchased several PAL Betamax tapes in an Ebay auction and am having problems locating a Betamax Multi-format machine to transfer them to NTSC (I have Betamax NTSC machines) Can anybody help with info on borrow, rent, or buy? Thankz, Jay.

Reddevil,

you might like to check the 4.43MHz chroma subcarrier. This is generated on the bottom board and is used to sync the head drum motor. It is Phase Locked to the video output from the tuner board. Hence the slight change in pitch if you ever change channel while in wind or rewind. Anyways the bottom board YC-28 is worth a check. Sometime the Circuit Protector PS001 expires.

Jay,

Beta and Super Beta multi-format VCRs show up from time to time on ebay for auction. If I remember correctly, none of the Beta multi-format models brought out by Sony had Beta Hi-Fi sound, and were monaural models only. One way to tell if a Sony Beta VCR is a multi-format model is to look for the "ME" model suffix on a Sony Beta VCR (e.g. SL-T50ME, SL-700ME, SL-800ME, etc.). The ME models were intended for sale and use in the Middle East, where different transmission formats abound in the movie tapes available for sale, and where many residents received tapes mailed to them from friends and relatives in North America, Europe, Asia, etc. Keep an eye out on ebay for one of these models, and good luck. Howard.

In the past I have owned about 7 betamax video recorders, but I only own 2 that work. I have a very old and heavy sony which is the best out of the lot, but it plays for about half an hour then stops and you have to turn it off and let it cool down, then restart it. Does anyone out there know the problem and how to solve it please!

Thanks

Sorry to be a pain, but I also have a sanyo that works perfectly but, when you eject the tape it ejects but leaves the tape around the rollers which as you can imagine gets you pretty upset when you have just ruined your most prized possession, "The Exorcist" and the origional mint copy. Anyway i'll stop going on about that. If anyone knows the answer to this problem please e-mail me!

Hi folks. What a fab site. I love my S-VHS deck, but I also adore Beta. Takes me back to my childhood, sniff. Anyway - I've bought a Sony C6 which needs some attention. I gather it's a common problem. The picture and sound quality is pretty much perfect, but the sound wows and the picture flashes every couple of seconds. I'm fairly used to the insides of these Sony machines, but can someone explain in layman's terms what needs adjusting. I've heard that it could be the capstan motor?

Cheers.

Beta - back to mono !!

Make up your own mind...

Wasn't going to bother replying but here goes

1. Yes I make a profit most of the time.2. It's none of your business where I get them from or how much they costme.3. It sounds like you don't need another machine and are merely hoardingthem.4. If you want a bargain try a boot sale.

To publish personal emails on a website is out of order. I think if you read between the lines you have some kind of complex.

The people who have purchased betamax machines or spares from me are not gullible and I am sure you have offended anyone who has and reads these pages (I know there are a few)

To put the record straight the first 950 I sold was to stuart for £130, it had loads of faults and that's what I thought it was worth (I made a loss) he has had a few bits off me since. I have never asked for £500 for a 950 and my ads always say offers (if anyone is interested and doesn't make an offer I tell them what I sold the last one for or to look through the archives at other ads. I tell the truth so Bill will back me up if he is reading.

I don't force anyone to do anything and I think I am fair with my prices. Infact I talked Andy out of buying my current machine because quite frankly he did'nt need it. However I did spend best part of the day sorting out his C9, supplying and fitting a new pop up door and a NEW remote (all for £40). He was happy, so was I.

I stand by my comment that it's my business where I get, or how much I pay for anything.

The simple fact is I have had four 950s in just under a year and you have had none. You are narked that I am combining a hobby and making some money in the deal.

As a freelance journalist why not try doing a bit more researh rather than acting on impulse

The price of anything is what ever someone is willing to pay for it. It wound up paying 500 for a 950 2 yeras ago only to discover it has an intermetient fault which one has been unable to get diagnosed. It was in great cosmetic condition and appeared to work fine as i tested it. It is currently at a friend's home and it took him some time before he realised i was right about it being knackered.

If someone wants to find Beta decks that are no longer wanted and sell them to people that want them, no one is forcing anyone to buy them, if said person can make some money in the deal and oth buyer and selelr are happy then that is great. that is what capitalism is all about.

Hi I have a small sound studio, running Cubase5, Soundforge5 on PC, with all the basic equipment needed to record, master etc.I am totally new to the Beta scene and would like to know what would be the most cost effective way for me to have a Beta system up and running. Would it mean syncronising my current set up to a Beta machine, with a TV screen? I have no idea! I would like to be able to do voice-overs/music to existing beta material, master it and have it ready for the client in Beta format.Any info would be much appreciated.ThanksCraig

Hi Craig, Without any further info, I think you need to check whether clients are expecting BetaMAX or betaCAM standards. They are different-see elsewhere on the PALsite for the full fax'n'info. You'll need a sync box to sync your computer up to video, and for the PC you're looking at one of the boxes from MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn)that reads and writes SMPTE.Therefore, if you have (and I'm asuming you do) a BetaCAM master with burnt in timecode on the audio track(s) you can use that to sync to your sequencer using SMPTE/EBUcode.I've done this myself using an Atari computer for sequencing (still IMHO the best) with Notator and Unitor (E-magic own SMPTE sync box). It works with all types of video and can run all frame ratesI can actually provide a timedcoded stereo master using Sony's PCM F1, 701 or 601 with any of my Betamax machines.Hope that this is usefulRegards

Why do you need a Head Cleaning Cassette? It´s not good to use a Dry Head Cleaner in any VCRS!Clean it manual!

To Steve; Your best bet for locating a cleaning tape and/or other Beta merchandise is the List in the Betamax Palsite Directory. The most common dry Beta cleaning cassette is the Sony CL-125 but there are a 1/2 doz. other brands. All are getting hard to come by. You can also very occasionally see them advertised on EBAY!

To Mark; Before you go looking for that Belt you'll have to be a little more specific i.e. If you have a front loading Sanyo machine there are actually 2 loading belts. One is attached to the motor that takes the cassette into the machine and the second is attached to the motor that winds the tape around the video head. If you have a top loading machine not a problem because there is only one belt for winding the tape around the head! You should also try the Betamax Palsite Directory for a resource. You will need to know the inner diameter of the belt (I.D.) or at least the model# of your machine in order to get the right one. If worst comes to worst you can try using a rubberband on a temporary basis. Good Luck! Al Smith

I have a Sony SL-C9E vcr the Australian version of the SL-C9 Im very impressed with this machine, it puts my new Sony VHS Vcr to shame! picture quality is unbeleivble and when recording off DVD and Satelite the picture quality stays almost as good as the source! only problem is the cassette carrage mechansism is cactus, i have to manualy assist the machine in loading and ejecting cassetts, this is a pain, are there any parts still available for this machine? or if anyone has the entire mechanisim id love to get my hands on it, its easy to remove as a whole unit.

I'm posting here cuz I exausted all other options. I need to find a repair place in the Massachusetts (or even New England) area that will repair beta decks! I have a Sony HF550 that I mentioned here before. The video out jack on it is still dead. And I called quite a few places including a "Sony Authorized Service Center!" In the latter, I could of sworn I heard the guy cringe on the other end of the line at the mention of "Betamax!" I recently acquired a Sony PCM -F1 unit and would like to use it w/ the 550 to record digital; might even try the 550 w/ the Backer32 and backup my PC to a beta (hahaha). Anyway, if anyone has leads, let me know.

Thx

Try this place;

Karl Kosower Electronic Services575 East Line Road Ballston Spa, NY 12020 518-885-7606

There's a $45 examination fee which is applied to the repair job and he says that there's an average of a couple weeks to a month turnaround depending on when he can get to it, how complex the repair, if he has parts...

Absolute Beta out of Remington Virginia also does Beta repairs but they're further away...

Previous to my other message, the models that I am seeking from Sony Only are made between the times of 1985 - 1990. Also, if anybody has any of the latest models from the late 80's or early 90's, please give me a shout, quality is always been in mind.

Hello!

I recently acquired a Sony Superbeta SL-HF2000 this weekend. Just wondering if any of you out there have an extra remote for it, since one didn't come with it.

I also have numerous remotes for Sony's and Toshiba's should anyone be looking for one. I also have 3 extra Beta VCR's I recently rebuilt right now. A Sanyo 4900, Sears BetaVision II, and a Toshiba I have dubbed "Franken-Beta" due to the swapping of parts I did with it. Not even sure what model number to give it! Though they do work great, unsure of how good the recording is on them. Gotta love the previous "Mr. Fix-It's" who have NO idea what they are doing in there......

Thanks for any help!

I recently aquired a Sony SLO-1700 machine, and today got round to hooking it up to my Sony TV.

The picture is fine, but there appears to be a problem with the soundwhich is far too quiet and a bit muffled. I know it's not thevideos at fault, since I've tried them on my old Sony C7, so is theresomething I'm doing wrong connecting-wise?

I'm using a scart lead into my Sony TV with the other end connecting to the VCR via two audio phono plugs into Audio Line Out, and a BNC into Video Line Out for the picture.

Is there another way of doing this?

I remember seeing a Rank badged Beta VCR in a video shop in Salford in the late 1980's (a Toshiba V5470 clone I think). I also saw what I think was a badge engineered Toshiba V31B in Debenhams in Manchester with a Lloyds badge selling for £199.99 in about 1987,I never see these models mentioned anywhere. Pre-recorded or blank? Blank tape can be had at almost any Radio Shack (US & Canada) but for $5.99 apiece. J & R Music World in the NYC area http://www.jandr.com sells Sony brand beta tapes at about $3 apiece.

I recently returned from Madrid and while on vacation bought a series of video tapes. When I got home to the USA, I found that they did not work. I realized then that they must be in beta format, but the package never indicated anything and I never thought to ask. Now I have 5 video tapes and have no idea on how to convert them or have them converted. I presume that they are in Beta format since I cannot get the tracking to work and the audio track is to fast to even understand what is being said. Am I correct in my assumption that these are Beta dna not VHS? Is there something I can buy to make them work without paying to have them reduplicated? Can I rent a beta machine and copy them myself? Please help, these videos are very special to me but I can't vies or enjoy them.ThanksChristopherPS reply fast please

I have a Sony SL-C7 which, after working perfectly and then being stored for a few years, now has a problem. The sound is good, the picture is good and the colours are good but it vibrates/flickers sideways during playback. I guess the picture moves about 0.5 to 1 inch in this shaking effect. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I just found out some other information that has made me really confused. I read that the cassette length determines the type of video. The casette for my new videos is the same size as a VHS casette. So, what do I have? VHS? Beta? Pal?

Please someone helpThanks againChris

Chris,

Looks like you purchased VHS cassettes in the European PAL format. If you really want to watch these cassettes, you have two choices. First choice is to purchase a VHS multi-format digital converter VCR to watch these tapes; they are not cheap (a converter VCR like the Aiwa HX-MV100 cost me U.S. $629 when I purchased it in Germany in 1999); but owning one of these machines will allow you to watch PAL or SECAM format tapes purchased now and in the future. The second option is to check the local yellow pages or the internet and locate a video shop or pro studio that does conversion work and is willing to transfer your PAL tapes into the NTSC format. These studios usually charge by the foot, so that is not going to be cheap either, and will probably cost you a healthy hunk of change to transfer all of the tapes you purchased in Europe. Good luck. Howard
