Hi,I own a Sanyo Betacord and i live in Australia. My main trouble is that the VHS has dominated and no one sells/produces beta tapes or mqachines anymore. Why is this so down under?. Everyone says Betas are old, why?.

Hi there! Please does ANYONE out there have the serial number for new video/audio heads for a SANYO VTC M40? I think that the ones in mine are on the way out ,I.E the hi-fi audio indicator does NOT light when playing back ANY tape and the recorded picture is ok yish but sometimes the colour drops in and out. However the 'comet tailing' on white objects is NOT present!!Martin Imber, i know that you have replaced the heads on this model yourself .Is it easy, and do you need a service manual for this?.thanks in advance ....Kevin

I have a Sony SL-3000 (Betamax) Portable Videocassette Recorder. It will fast forward and rewind fine, but the tape remains stationary in the play position (it moves slightly when the play button is pushed - then stops). If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it. Thanks.Dale

Further to my message on 7th June above asking for suppliers of bits for my lovely Sanyo front loader remote control VTC6500, thanks to all who emailed me. I have just replaced all the belts on this 18 year old machine, having also replaced the idler assembly several months ago, and all is now perfect! I love this site...!

To Madness; At the risk of providing useless information, Have you tried the Betamax Website Directory? Listed there is Carlson Television & Electronics (617)332-8484, address= 435 Newtonville Avenue- Newtonville Massachusetts. I do not know them but they are listed as doing repairs. Also I recently bought a used Sanyo Beta on Ebay from a lady in South Carolina (I live in Michigan) and she charged me appro.$20.00 to ship it to me via UPS Ground Mail. The reason I mention this is because there is a repair shop in the Detroit area that I spoke with about a month ago -Don Lor Electronicswww.don-lors.com , (731) 455-3011 and confirmed that they are still actively fixing Beta Units. If you don't mind a $40.00 shipping cost (my rough estimate)you might consider them.

To Kevin; All Sanyo Service Manuals have a list of parts numbers but Sanyo probably doesn't make the part(s) anymore. If you need a part your best bet would be to contact a wholesaler on the internet and give them the model # of your machine plus the best description you can give (or the part number) and see if there is a Generic for it. Also I guess that from what you are describing your Video Heads are O.K. (This is just about the most expensive repair that is done on a VCR- and no don.t try it yourself your friend was lucky!) Rather I would look at your RF Modulator first!

To Dale; Sounds like your Idler Tires and/or Pinch Roller is/are worn. Visually inspect them to see if they are shiney, uneven, or torn. If they are replace them. The parts are not to hard to find, nor are they expensive and you can replace them yourself!

Best Wishes; Al Smith

I have a Sony Betamovie camera 550ccd , and in the last few years i've noticed that my Sony HG Betamax L-750 tapes that i'am using are having a hard time playing or recording with these tapes. I have two Beta machines a HF500 & SL-HFT7 Superbeta Theater both in excellent operating condition.Tapes struggle to move continually trip out the play mode or record mode. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem? If anyone knows a remedy for this condition I would greatly appreciate a reponse.P.S. TAPES ARE STORED IN DRY TEMPERATE CONDITIONS IN THEIR PRODUCTION WRAPPERS.

Hi Paul, your faulty tapes may well be because the plastic shells have warped.I don't know why this happens, but I've found a similar problem with brand new tapes in the past. What I've done is taken another cassette where the tape itself is knackered but the shell is in good conditionand swapped the tapes over.It also works with earlier audio cassettes!

I hope that this is helpful: maybe the manufacturer tried experimentingwith a dodgy formulation of plastic (similar to some car manufacturerswho experiment with cheaper forms of steel and wonder why their cars rust away!

Best wishes

David

HELP!I have a Sony SL7 betamax with a minor (i think!) fault...sometimes the machine plays perfectly while other times i get bad dropout/noise at intervals of about 2/3 seconds. The mechanism for tape transport works perfectly.

Are there any helpful enthusiasts who live in say a 60 mile radius of chard somerset who may be able to help me with a repair (i will pay you for your time or give you a large box of spare Beta tapes in return!!)

Ive tried video shops locally which have been about as much use as a one legged man at an ass kicking contest!! :)

Any help appreciated...can you email me direct

Mike; Here are a couple of things you can try- 1.) Start a tape playing and the start turning the tracking control knob when you see the pulsating snow and see if you can make it disappear. 2.) Look at your idler tires and pinchroller and see if they are worn if they are replace them. 3.) Before you play a tape first fast forward it all the way and then rewind it! As a wild guess you may have a tape tension problem. These suggestions may help. Best Wishes; Al Smith

I have 2 Beta machines that I would like to have repaired. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The first is a Sony 550 Super Beta HIFI. The second machine is a Toshiba V2300 I believe. Both machines have the same problem, that is the loading mechanism wont work and it is impossible to put tapes in them. They both played fine at one time and I am sure they would again if I could find a repair center? Any ideas are welcome...Thanx, Mark

Needing advice badly: My EDC-55 was working fine until I moved and got it out of the case to use it. No power, so I removed the cuircit board & found the fuse was blown. Since I have not been able to find my tool box I orderd a couple of new fuses and carried them & the board to the closest tv repair shop to get the fuse solderd in. When I got it put back together the only thing it wants to do is turn the spindles in opposite directions, as if it wants to eject a tape? But, the door will not open. Not any of the buttons seen to work. The viewfinder lites, but there is no picture? Since I used to own a small tv station, I can get parts wholesale. If any one out there could help me get my beloved 55 going again, I would be more than happy to help you out with Beta parts!! Sincerely, Mike

For those of you who got an SL-HF 300 but didn't get the manual, there's a few neat features with the 300 that aren't very obvious. If you press the PLAY button while holding down the REWIND button it will (a) auotmatically play the tape after rewinding it if the clock is showing on the display (b) automatically stop and play when it reaches 0000 if the tape counter is showing on the display. If the tape counter is showing on the display and instead of the PLAY button you press the STOP button while holding down the REWIND button it will automatically stop when it reaches 0000.

I just got a GCS-1 Super Betamovie camera. The battery is no longer available so I found a Radio Shack 9.6 V NIMH rechargeable that works very nicely. The battery is 1600 MAH and costs $20.00. A charger is another $10.00. I put a piece of Velcro on the top of the camera and another on the battery. I made a cable to connect the battery to the power socket on the back of the camera. It looks a bit odd but it works fine. As near as I can tell, the battery will run the camera for about two hours. I bought several batteries and keep charged ones in the case with the camera.

This is a remarkably nice machine. The picture quality is excellent and it has a very professional look. There is a tiny switch in the clock battery compartment. I understand it is for selecting between Super and Regular Beta bandwidth. Does anyone know which position is which? I have a super beta VCR and I can't tell the difference between recordings made in either of the two positions.

Also, how easy is it to replace the video heads in a VTC-5000? Is it effectively a straight plug-in-and-play job, or do you need test tapes, oscilloscopes, and years of experience in electronics?

Here's an old Dave Letterman Top Ten list for the Fourth of July (US Independence Day)

Top ten reasons the English lost the colonies

10 Hard to shoot straight with sissified wig falling in your eyes.

9 Wanted to just lose New Jersey but got carried away.

8 Colonists on steroids.

7 Sent too much time guessing who's gay in the royal family.

6 Their diet: tea and crumpets. American diet: raw squirrel meat and whiskey.

5 Serious problem with "snuff" abuse.

4 Lot's of painful poking accidents trying to put on those pointy hats of theirs.

3 Americans had Batman!

2 Wanted to get first draft choice.

And the number one reason the British lost the colonies...

Uninspiring battle cry: "Let's win this one for our swishy inbred monarch!"

Of course Don King probably fixed the whole thing...

SANYO VTC5300P PROBLEMS.

The vcr has 3 problems:

It has trouble playing tapes. I have to hit the tape drawer a few times to get the tapes to spool and play.Though when playing they work well(no chewing of tapes, slowing down or loss of sound).

Secondly ejecting. I have to remove the tape door and push tape up down (ie north south direction) and then the tape does eject after a few seconds.Strangely pressing eject to open the drawer to load tapes works fine.

Finally when in operation it can be a little noisy when playing tapes at a low volume.Nothing that actually interferes with the viewing of the tape but the sound you get from vcrs when working, but it's louder than you'd normally expect.Well I hope the info helps.Adam

HiAnyone in Northern Ireland either got (1) where-with-all to have a look at a Sanyo VTC9300 - requires good overhaul (will pay going rate plus spares etc) or (2) anyone got a good Beta VCR going for a song? ThanksGerry

I am working on a school project examining Betamax Advertisments. Problem is I've only found one so far. If there are any archived Betamax Ads, or if someone knows a good resource I'd really appreciate any help. I wish I were researching the demise of VHS instead.

Hi! I have two Betamax recorders (both Sanyo VTC 5150 ) which will go to the dump if no one wants them. They both worked perfectly the last time I used them which was a year or two ago. There is no charge other than any shipping necessary. I live in LEEDS, Yorkshire, England. Anyone interested? I also have 100 or more home recorded tapes (mainly films and TV programmes) so if anyone can tell me how to dispose of them I would be very grateful. Thanks.

I am looking for approx 100 Betamax video cassette cases (the plastic cases, not the sleeves) for a promotion I am organising.

If anyone can let me know where I may be able to get hold of these (ideally in the UK to reduce shipping charges).

Please mail me at the address above.

To Alex and Andy - LICK ME!

I have an SL-5400, SL 2000 (with an HVC-2200 camera) and an SL-HF 300 a BMC 220 and a BMC 550. I just ordered an SL-HF 450 and am expecting another BMC 220 any day now (It's a great camera and I want a spare...). I have about a hundred or so blank Beta tapes and a hundred more already filled with rich Beta-y goodness. The one HiFi VHS VCR I keep hooked 'into the grid' only sees nominal use as a 'buddy' tuner for my SL-HF 300 and to play the few VHS movies I've bothered to acquire. Indeed I still have a solitary blank VHS tape from a ten-pack I bought last year that still in it's shrink wrap.

I have use and adore my Betas because Sony got it right with it's U-load system and it's lightning fast responding tape transport system...In contrast even Sony's latest VHS Hi-Fi takes forever to change between modes because it uses the naturally sluggish - in a George W. Bush sorta way - M-load system.

and I haven't even bothered to mention the superiority of Beta's picture quality - even chewed up tapes with more dropouts that a public high school look presentable on my heavy duty dropout compensating SL-HF 300...

So you can take your wuss fecal VHS and stick it where the sun don't shine...
