I've got almost everything but a lot of the catalog pages

I hate to obsess over our (least) favorite gastropod but these item caught my attention...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1366239075

An SL-2700 that stops a few seconds after play, won't return the tape to it's shell, and is missing buttons.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1367133999

Another SL-2700. This one 'powers up good but won't accept a tape. And is missing buttons.

I shudder to think of the dodgy 'Frankenbeta' he's gonna slap together from these two units...

Wow...another weekend of multitudinous and interesting posts on the beta chatpage. Here are some thoughts on a few of them:

-Umatics: I own one Umatic, a VP-5000 player I picked from a govt surplus sale two years ago. I have never bothered to hook it up, as it is a player only, and I don't have any 3/4" U tapes to play in the machine. Since Sean seems to know something about this format, perhaps he can fill me in on what I got, and if this model is any good. BTW, did Sony come out with U-Matic hi-fi models? Is the 5000 one of them?

-I own a Sony SL-2700, like the ones Snaling acquired to make his "frankenbeta". Like the ones in the ad, my 2700 lost its front panel button pads under the previous owner, who unfortunately never saved them so that I can glue them back. Does anyone here have these little button pads that fell off their 2700 that they're willing to sell to me so that I can glue them back onto my 2700? My machine looks "incomplete" without the button pads, but atleast this venerable veteran still works, and the loading mechanism (this model's achilles heel) has not failed me yet (hope I didn't just jinx that unit).

-For Franny: Were there Beta decks available for sale in Ost Berlin when it was still part of the DDR? Did the DDR use PAL, or did they use SECAM broadcast format, like their Soviet sponsors? Do you go to the annual Love Parade in central Berlin? Are they still throwing the Love Parade every July? :)

Howard:THat't a 5-series Umatic, a good machine. There was never a Umatic HiFi like beta HiFi but they all had linear stereo that was almost as good as beta Hifi because of the tape speed and width. It would pair to a recorder like a VO-5600, or 5800, or 5850, and become an editing slave. Or you can just play back any Umatic tapes you find. WIth the recorder, you could use an edit control wiht 33-pin interface. Like an RM-440. Not a bad machine, you have there.

We got our HF-950 from the big Intourist shop the East German government set up to fleece those citizens lucky enough to get money from relatives on the other side so we could watch West Berlin TV - which is PAL on our East TV set which only had channels for East TV stations. So I guess that makes East Germany a PAL country as well. I could be wrong a father had tinkered with the set so that he could hook up the VCR and I don't what mess he made in there.

As for the 'Love' parade, they're always grumbling that this year is going to be the last one but they go and do another one the next year...

Despite this seeming 'photographic evidence' http://morgenpost.berlin1.de/misc/loveparade/loveparade_2001/img2/dsc_0015.jpg I missed the last years parade because I was on holiday in the States. Took the Mankewitzes (Monika and Erika) this year...

I should probably clarify that this was a response to Howard's query. In the time I took to compose this I had to leave the computer for other things.

As good as the debate between PAL and NTSC Betas are one must remember that the REALLY great and innovative Beta products never got to leave the land of the Rising Sun. I think overseas sales of Betas were merely a way for Sony to pay the R&D for the amazing Domestic Market Betas you see at http://www.Betamax.TO

One would think that us Germans being old allies of Japan just might get a cut of the prime Betas but I guess old aquaintances will be forgotten...

On the NTSC vs PAL debate...

I would think that given that the PAL system gives you 625 lines and 25 frames (100 more lines then NTSC) but standard (non-Hi-Band) video recording can only show 250 of them at the most, what you actually get on tape would most likely look better on NTSC's 525 lines and 30 frames...

Mind you since most movies were photographed at 24 frames per second one wonders what gets put on that extra 1 or 6 frames per second...

Olive: Well, when describing the number of lines in the specs, they're referring to horizontal resolution, which is 720 for NTSC (I think it's the same for PAL too, but not sure). The vertical resolution and the fps are the main differences between PAL. Personally, I'd rather sacrafice the 100 lines for the extra fps, because my eyes hate low framerates. Even the 30fps is kinda low for me.

Franny, to the best of my knowledge, prior to unification the DDR used SECAM East along with most of the rest of the former Soviet bloc. My old (German)multistandard Loewe tv receiver had to be switched manually to SECAM L for French reception. However, in PAL B/G mode it would automatically switch to SECAM E if a signal was detected. Loewe seemingly expected to be able to sell in the DDR. I don't know what the picture is now, but as I understand it, even in Russia stations are now making programs in PAL and transcoding to SECAM E for transmission. The writing is clearly on the wall for SECAM East.

Sean, just for what it's worth I brought the Wollensak U-Matic into my work area and looked around for an extension cord that might do the trick and then it occurred to me that I forgot how special that original cord is. The ground prong is round. So, I found an old Kirby vacuum cleaner 2 prong cord and plugged it in the back and into the power strip and POOOOF!; no just kidding it powered up OK. Well the one thing when I bought this thing is that there is a tape in it and even tho it is a top loader with a lever to eject the tape it won't. So, I thought well I might as well try to get the tape out so I removed the top cover and HOLY SH*&@# is that a huge headdrum assembly, and in fact the whole system is like 3 times the size of a Beta. Anyway, I couldn't get this thing to eject the tape so I figured I might as well see what happens when I start pushing buttons. Well, play was the only thing that would work at first. I have no idea how many years the tape was in there but after about 10 minutes of working the loader assy by hand I got all functions to work, except eject. So, I will play with it again and probably have to remove the bottom panel and see if there is some way to get it to eject the tape. Also, if anybody on this chat page is very familiar with oooooold U-Matics what is the switch marked "Auto" for?? With the cover off it is located on the right side.

Howard, For a couple bux plus shipping I'll send you a tape in hopes it works and then you'll know if your unit does.

BTW, this thing weighs about 50 pounds.

Also, from that same auction last year I got an old Sony SL-8200 top loader with the old hand crank channel selector nobs. It too had a tape in it but I was able to remove that tape. I put another old tape in it and nothing works; won't play rew, or FF. No doubt most of the 12K belts are bad. The tape, when played back on my HF750 at times 2 speed, has the CBS evening news from late July, early August, 1982. Narrowed it down to that because of an old car commercial that the sale ends Aug. 31, 1982. Anyway the SL-8200 is for sale for the cost of shipping.

Later. Pepse.

About NTSC vs PAL I think the 950 and the 750 are quite simmilar (The rear of these is totally different) but , except the 950 editing facilities, the 750 is more advanced than the 950. It has a better tunner (with stereocast, but the 950, no nicam) with more (I think) that 100 channels, compared to the 30 channels that has the 950 are ridiculous (well, USA has got more TV channels, yes) and the 750 has got Video phono connectors which is better than using BNC because they aren't used except on professional video and I turned crazy trying to find convereters to phono!More advantages of the 750 are, for example that all 750s included jog/shuttle remote and the 750 was capable to receive the index mark/erase functions from the remote. The 1000 was also able to receive the insert functions also the 950 doesn't receive them.I don't know if the 950 MKII has more functions than the ES version but, in a week or two I'll be able to see it because I've found a person who lets me photocopy the full E/ES/UB/MKII versions Service manuals.I don't know why there isn't a performed version of the 950 with NICAM, VPS, Hi-speed wind (<<<->>>)Regards to all.

I want the http://www.betamax.to/catalog/199308/9308_05_EDV-9000.jpg PAL version.

Sure there are PAL ED-BETA machines?

Me doubts. I think they don't exsist. Or not?

If someone can confirm it.

Sony has never had consideration for top PAL machines. A middle one for America and, of course a high one for Japan.

Pepse:If you take off the plasitc part covering the controls and such on the front (BE careful) and also the front panel, you should have access to a series of rods along the front of the machine. These control the functions. If you pull them they will make the functions. However this comes from the 2-series machines and I do not know if it will work on the 1-series machines... I'd look into the cassette mech... Those rods are probably not htere, because it has no solenoid control... Look and see if it has them, though.

To Franny: Wow, you're getting really creative with your "snailograms", the Leni and Patton ones are a hoot! When I was stationed at Heidelberg in 1999-2000, I watched the television coverage of the Berlin Love Parade; it was WILD!

To Casimir: I read somewhere that Sony developed a prototype for a PAL ED-Beta VCR back in the late 1980's, but it was never put into production. That PAL ED-Beta prototype is probably in the Sony museum in Tokyo or something like that.

To the PAL and NTSC Betafans here: I think there is more than enough room on this site for all of us to share and co-exist here. As someone once said ten years ago in Los Angeles, "can't we all just get along?"

Heh heh heh...just returned from a lunchtime errand to another part of town with free loot. Got an email earlier today from a former office mate who retired last year from the agency. He's been cleaning up his attic and basement, and found his very old beta VCR sitting in a suitcase in the basement closet, and offered it to me for free. I drove to his house and checked it out; it turns out to be a Sanyo VCR4000 toploader from around 1982, accompanied by about 15 beta tapes. I left with the old toploader, the tapes, plus a two-shelf TV stand that I can use to hold some of my beta VCRs, all for free. Good deal; I'll let everyone know how the machine works when I take it home and test it out tonight. Howard

Here's an oldie but goodie on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1370041790. The seller states this is an "SL-8600", but it's actually an SL-7200 X-1 VCR. It comes with the good ole' DT-40 outboard timer. Anybody who wants to own a piece of North American Betamax history should make a bid for this one. Howard

I used to have a 7200. Pretty heavy deck. It's got only one motor which drives everything. But it's quite a heavy duty motor. It must be 2 H.P. at least ! In there, the tape transport is reversed compared to newer Sony units. It looks more like a Sanyo. Picture quality was good, but far from B1s with which it only shares the speed !

Anyhow, I have a Umatic from the same Era and it too has only one motor and it's about as big as the one from a Kirby Vacuum cleaner that is powerful enough to drive a drill. BUt size says noting about power, it's just a HUGE motor, Also my Umatic has a solenoid the size of your fist, because it is automatic...

Size says nothing but if there was a flaw in this machine's design it sure ain't its motor.

$16.26 isn't a bad deal to pay for a VCR-4400 and a bunch of tapes assuming the idler tires are still good. The VCR-4400 is a reasonably sturdy and reliable unit but won't get cable channels so you'll need to hook it to another VCR or cable box if you wan't to tape anything other than the 'lower 13'. What kind of remote does yours take? They either used 5 pin DIN or 3/32nd plug.

Re: Of course he knows... It was mentioned that snailmeko borrowed some item description passages from Ray G's site. If so this page is only a click away from there. This is not a secret society. However it is entirely possible that he does not care what we say or do. We are not his main customers. Any high bidder will do, and there are plenty of them out there. If he really cares, his revenge will be to use a third alias to sell our slug bait back to us. If you see anything in any category on eBay use as much common sense as you always have used (since the first time you got burned, anyway).

For some reason it won't stay in play mode. Any ideas on what might be wrong with it? Was this even an intended-for-American-release Beta?

Only a $50 start bid. At that price it might be worth getting just as a snail squisher...

Olive, the EDV-5000 is a domestic Japanese ED Beta; it was never released here in North America. I tested out that Sanyo VCR 4000 I got for free last night; it has the usual problems of a VCR that has been sitting in a closet for the last 15 years. It would not fast forward or rewind, and it munches a bit of tape when ejecting. Guess I will have to go get a Sanyo Beta idler/belt refurbish kit to give this baby a second life. Made a bid for 39 new Betacam 20G oxide tapes on ebay yesterday, and was outbid in the last seconds by a whole bunch of last-second snipers. Oh well, I still have a bunch of them left from previous buys, so no big deal. Howard

Well I finally got my Daewoo macrovision free dvd player yesterday, and I must say that I am really happy with the results. Perfect copies to my SL-HF1000. It's so nice to be able to stick it to the movie industry with this baby. In case anybody is interested, there is a dealer that sells these units all the time on ebay, all are Daewoo and have been re-programmed to ignore region and copy guard, they are pretty nice little decks both in appearance and features, and it's nice to be able to copy them to Beta. I saw the EDV-5000 on ebay, and I have decided to try and fend off the snail if he tries to get it. Hopefully I'll be able to hold on.

~Scott
