Sorry folks.. the only Beta machines in this country are the ones I have in this house.. :( Actually, I do know where there are a couple others, but old Betamax standard mono machines.. and I don't think those work.. a friend of mine has had them in his repair shop for a large number of years. Koreans only want the newest (whether it's the best or not) and will toss anything they feel is outmoded directly into the recycle bin. :(

Well it looks like the seller of that $50 BIN SL-HF 300 must've put some of that 'Sluggo' stuff http://www.pestproducts.com/images/sluggo1.jpg around the VCR...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1371573925

Still no takers. If you need a sliver flipper door or just want to convert your black SL-HF 300 with the shell parts this is a good buy...

Looking at that HF300 for $50 BIN: The remote pictured w/ it looks like it's from either the SL-5200 or 2710. I got both of them and their "stubby" remotes. And a couple of things in the description that catch my eye:

1) The dead video out jack. I have an HF550 that once had that same problem. I troubleshooted it in the crudest manner; by tracing back the circuitry and touching a few points w/ the video cable center. I finally norrowed it down to an open resistor in the circuit just before the jack. A whole 39¢ @ RadioShack got me a 5-pack and I fixed the deck. I'd wonder if I could do the same to fix that 300.

2) The seller mentions that he "can't record w/ it." Logic would tell me that if it plays, it must record as well. But other than the recording circuits being outright dead, I say either he didn't have a blank tape to test it or the video in jack is also dead (but it should still be possible to record from the tuner). It might be worth it for a fixer-upper, but I'd want more info from the seller regarding the above points.

Nice diagnostic, Madness. had a similar idea about it, and I think that he may be havng some problems about the recording: I have sn SL-20 that has a well-hidden switch for the input source, and he may have overlooked it. Also he may be too dumb to know about record tabs, this has happened before...

What I find most amusing about eBay is sellers who just assume that anyone that bids on their item is a crook out to cheat them and would but for the seller's terse, chippy terms of sale. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1371749217 Ironically, I wouldn't want to inconvenience this seller by bidding on and winning this item.

Franny, you have brought up something that I now think of... that mrbetamax guy, he seems to do only buying, but now we have something to watch for. we have to be on the look out for that same VCR, in any condition, and see who sold it, and then trace it to Mrbetamax if we can. Then we will know if he is a "snail (reseller)" or not... Down with Snails, DVD, and VHS!betamax forever!

Scroo it, I did a buy it now on that SL-HF300 silver unit. I couldn't resist. The torture of watching it, and no one bidding on it. It would have to take a person such as I to place a bid for $50 on it. Anyways I plan on fixing it, and making it my next "mule" workhorse deck.I like the simple units such as this one, nothing fancy yet it does the job, and does it great. I have a SL-HF1000 and I seldom use it because I am fearful of damaging the expensive heads. It is a true archive machine, I only use *new* media in it. The SL-HF300 will be a worry free unit, if I ruin the heads in it playing a 20+ year old tape "treasure", so what- they are only $16!! A SL-HF1000 head-disc is no longer available from Sony. Now you have to get the complete drum assembly. Bookoo $$$$$... Andy

You always think of something when you hit "post"...Olive: you mentioned the "sound fields" on the SL-HFT-7, well, any good sony reciever should have a full compliment of them... The ultimate Sony reciever I have seen (I also own it!) is the STR-DE945, which has the following sound fields:NOrmal SurroundCinema Studio EX A, B, & CSemi Cinema Studio EX A, B, CNight Theater (For low-volume but with surround effects!)Mono Movie (THAT's simmulated stereo!)Stereo Movie (simmulated surround from 2 speakers) Headphone theater (uses headphones and speakers to create a low-volume surround effect...)Three "Virtually enhanced" modes...Small hallLarge hallOpera houseJazz clubDisco/clubStone ChurchLive house (one of the best!)ArenaStadium (play a queen record and hold a lighter int he air....)Game (for video games...)

Yeah, that's a LONG list... and yeah, I didn't pay full price for this beasty, got him on clearance and got another $75 knocked off for no remote and then got the guy to go fetch a remote from out back... but bot the right one so I kept the $75 off!!!! you can name the inputs and it's a real treat to see one come up on the display as "betamax"!!!!

Shucks...I lost out on the ED-V5000 ed-beta deck. I placed a very solid bid on that machine with a few hours left to go, but it was eventually taken by "Mr.Betamax". I hope"Mr.Betamax" is not a snail-type reseller. If he's a fellow betafan, I hope he enjoys that machine; if he's just another reseller, then I hope he gets the mumps. I shouldn't feel too bad, though, as I should be receiving another SL-HF450 tomorrow from the fedex man for use as a back-up on one of my editing set-ups. Howard

Howard: I too am not mrbetamax's biggest fan. I have been sniped numerous times on ebay by him before, namely on a rare Aiwa beta (model 70 if I remember right) that I had right until the last 12 seconds of the auction. Mrbetamax is one of the purest snipers and snails, waiting until the last 30 seconds or less to bid. But I am certaily glad he will pay alot for a deck, and I truly hope that it costs a pretty penny for him to fix. Ok, now that I've got that out of my system, I'm looking for a video switcher (that will allow copying and has audio jacks as well as the video jacks) that has 6 inputs. Ok, I know I have alot of video to support. My setup is as follows: SL-HF1000, EDV-9500, SLV-675HF (VHS), Dawoo DVD, XBOX, Nintendo Gamecube. Lots of stuff I know for one tv. nnils: mrbetamax and betamax are two different people, and I can tell you how. I am betamax, and I consider mrbetamax pretty much my archenemy. Scott:You need a BIG video switcher. There are VCR sized ones that you can get on Ebay. They show up. Keep looking. Does anyone know if that wood case for the 2500 is sony equipment? I've seen them on Marantz amps and they are worth something like $100 without the amp and then more WITH the amp... I've never seen it before. It's possible the microcontroller in the EDV-5000 is fouled up and thinks "play" is eject. If so... I'd hate to be "mrbetamax"

Hi Scott. A/V switchers like the one you're looking for are available, but they are a bit on the pricier side. I know that Sony and JVC both sell multiple in/out units like the one you're looking for. Units with composite and S-Video connections go for between one to two hundred dollars; while units with multiple composite, S-Video, and component hook-ups go into the 300-400 dollar range or more. Cheapo switcher units sold at Radioshack and Circuit City for about 30 -50 bucks usually have only three composite line inputs at the most. Howard

A good videoswitcher is the Sony VTX-1000R. It was made in 1984 or so, but offers3 or 4 video inputs, all composite line with L+R audio inputs. It has a built in TV tuner, but will only tune up to cable channel 36. It has RF input+output switching too. It wasmeant to work with the old "Profeel" trinitrons. There was a successor to the VTX-1000R also,it had more input switching, and a MTS stereo TV tuner. Unsure if it tuned past cablechannel 36. I owned a VTX-1000R and I found it to be a very high quality composite switcher.I am sure someone can come up with the model # of the later (improved) unit? Andy

If he never sells any (whic I think is probable, he doesn't seem laze judging by his operation (a tad bit greedy, but laazy, never!) he hasn's sold any, not surprising, given the price. If it were $75, I'd be all over them, I'd buy one or two or three if I could get the cash together, but for $125 for a unit that's probably an ex-duplicator (not as bad an an editor, they are worn into the ground by doing nothing but cue, sync, play, stop cue sync play(or record) stop cue play record lather rinse repeat... The SLO-1400 units would likely need servo capacitor replacement, belt replacement, replacement replacement, etc. I don't care what the guy says, they may work but they are going to have problems. They can be a challenge to work on, quite tempermental if they have servo lockup problems, which almost all of them do at this point, this includes the SL-5200 too.If he was selling 20 @ $10 a piece I'd be all over them myself. Oh wait, maybe not. Thats alot of storage space, these things are built like a battleship, or erm- stationwagon. 20 of those would take up 1,000 square feet , right? Up on ebay it goes. So, don't bid on a Lasermax player or a VP-5020. "I got them from a friend who upgraded to DVD. Jesse about that Lasermax. Did you bother to try and clean the lens of it? Maybe it was marginally dirty (it could read the disc in it) and got totally dirty as you were testing it out - to the point it couldn't read discs anymore. Something that I have been pondering: Which deck does a better job? As I do have both, I seldom do a side by side comparison. In BII mode on both the SL-HF1000 and EDV-9500, which yields the better picture quality? I'm talking about regular Super Beta on both decks. Eventually I will do the test myself, but for now I was wondering what the rest of you think. How about at BIII. Now I assume that at BII in ED Beta mode on metal tape, it should beat the SL-HF1000 even at BI Super Hi-band, and I also assume this would be true in BIII ED mode? Just a few thoughts.

Scott:

The HF-1000 versus EDV-9500: in BIIs, the 1000 wins out. The ED beta will look better than BIs-shb. the 1000 is the best superebeta. ED-beta is a differnt format, to a certain extent. I read this, feel free to do your own tests, in fact please do and report back to us!

I find myself most pleased with BIshb on a SL-HF1000 than BII ED on the 9500, but only undeunder certain circumstances. I like BIshb alot when recording from straight analog source (like high quality C-Band satellite). But, when recording MPG2 DVD that is not all compressed to hell like the digital satellite boxes are, I got great results using a EDW-30F(aka 9500) in BII mode. I definately could see the resolution gains then, compared to just recording from standard broadcast sources, etc. But, as far as staying closest to the original source when making recordings on both SL-HF1000 BIshb and EDW-9500 BII ED, I find that the SL-HF1000 in BIshb makes the most "close" to original copy of the recorded source. The 9500 tends to have a slightly grainier picture in ED mode upon playback, compared to the original source. Its all subjective, but I think BIshb looks alot more cleaner than ED Beta II . Andy

Just learned that my trusted SL HF 1000 has a number of cracked boards and that some of them are proving difficult to find.

Was wondering if anyone out there has a 1000 that has been worn out or has severe mechanical problems that they might be willing to part with. I do have a 900 that has heads which are nearing their last days, which would be willing to tradefor same. I do figure the 1000 can be fixed by patching but have been told it may require a number of trips to teh shop to get it done. Or if anyone really wants a won out 900 I'dpart with it for the $125 I saw someone said such a beastie went for on ebay.

Brad, you're wrong on both counts. Sorry. VHS stands for Video Home System. It's a backwards Japanese acronym. Betamax doesn't stand for anything. It comes from the shape the tape makes when it is threaded, it looks a little like the greek letter "B" which is the B with the tail you see on this page. Max is a shortening of maximum, and to hte japanese, "beta" sounded a bit like "better" so it subliminally suggests "better" and so doesn "max". In the same note, some early japanese Video cameras had the letter HL attached to them, they stood for "handy-looky" coming from the expression "walkie-talkie" meaning handheld portable two-way radios...

Silly, isn't it...Sean

If there is a tower records near anyone, try and look for beta. I looked in mine and they had some. L-750s for $7 and L-750-HGs for $8 or $9, I think. Theirs are Sonys and come in a plastic case like the fujis used to and this may or may not be worth the extra $1 over the radio shack ones.

Please Help! Does anyone know anywhere in the UK where I can get video heads for a Betamovie BMC-200P ?This wonderfull camera was in very regular use but no only records audio, the motor for the auto focus also seem dead but this I can do without, I dont want to go back to the crappy quality of my 8mm camcorder when this camera has served me well for so many years.

Well, the idiot lasermax is whirling like it has been since about 4 this afternoon. Finally decided it would read the disc "just this one time." When I connected it to the TV, it looks like it has a servo lock problem (ever seen video when someone's slowing down the heads intentionally, the way the picture breaks up and then rolls?). Video shows momentarily and then drops back out. It revs and slows, revs and slows. Audio is very choppy... And I think I can cook something on it. But it doesn't smell yet!

I had a pioneer with similar problems but they were solved by cleaning it. Yours has indeed bad problems. Good luck trying to sell/fix it, whichever you should choose.

I'm a regular in that category. ;) But I gotta love when people post items in there (or a dual-category in this case) that have nothing at all to do w/ beta. There's a auction for the complete Dragonball Z series. But is it all on beta??? It doesn't say so, but I doubt it. Most likely so-so-quality VCD's. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1554800241

Sean,

Don't forget, you also need a multistandard TV as well. You can pick up stuff like that ridiculously cheap in Thailand.. they even sell real, licensed DVD's for only about $5 apiece there.. (their unique approach to discouraging piracy). BTW.. I brought home a dual system PAL/NTSC SVCD player, with built in amplifier, on my last trip there. I really don't have a lot of use for it, with no PAL television (minor oversight on my part).. so if anyone wants it, I'll let it go for $70.. also plays audio CD's and standard VCD's.

I might get a ridiculously old multistandard TV set if I get hte multistandard VCR,m but that is a long way down the road. Or I will get a modern automatic stadards converter and hide it.

I have an old Fergusson Videostar PAL/NTSC VCR, its a huge unit but the quality on either format is great! I diddnt acctually realise it was PAL/NTSC when I brought it, I got it for the connector on the front so I could plug my Sony HVC-4000 camera into it, as my SL-F1 was dropped down the stairs by a removal guy when i moved house! :(

Yukkies! I don't know why but those short and wide betas remind me of an Oldsmobile. I think the SL-HF300 is the best! Every beta should have had the big green Beta hifi lamp prominently displayed on the front. :) So, just to confirm one last time, does using SP or metal tape wear down and/or clog the heads faster? I've found they're great for making hifi audio recordings on my 300 but was concerned about head wear; no one's ever answered that question directly. Lasahmax whuhlin' since yestuhday aftuhnoon.. I decided to see how long it would take to crap out. It's not revving anymore, it sounds steadier than it did yesterday.

What's wrong with Oldsmobiles? And what's wrong with the "slimline" betas? I like 'em both, bujt, hey, that's life. I wonder if letting the Lasermax go for so long will cure it?

Nothins wrong with Oldsmobiles... LOL i just said the slimlines remind me of them. Yes, actually, letting the Lasahmax run for so long actually did cure it! I connected it to the TV and was rewarded with a chemistry lab safety video. In crisp, clear colour. Although there's something screwy with the audio, I hear two channels at once: One is of an announcer (the correct track) and the other is another announcer talking about the next video. (it's playing the audio for the current track, and the audio for the upcoming track together). Oh well. Maybe the excess warmth of the machine boiled off the snail goo that was clogging the spindle motor. Who knows.. I'm gonna go try it in another 5 minutes to see if it reads now that its cooled off. Yay! I just wish the thing had controls, though (aside from a power and EJECT key). Gotta love them late 80s chemistry videos. Oh ya! They even show a umatic (looks like a 5020)! When they're talking about turning stuff off and making sure its unplugged in the lab before you work on electronic circuits, they show someone turning off a umatic (even show the SKEW control) and then pretending to mess around with its insides in the next clip. (crosses fingers).. now its time to go boot it up again.

Jesse, lots of laserdiscs had dual audio. You need a remote to properlly select the audio channel to listen to. Oh well, but it works! Way to go! This is good. Get the remote or if the things has RS-422 get a cable and some RS-422 drivers for your pC and have fun.

@Brenda Ann Dyer: the mover that dropped my sl-f1 origionally said "its an old piece of crap" and tried to give me £10 for a replacement!!!!!After a big argument I told him to go out and get me a new one, same model, he went away never to return so I confronted the removal company with CCTV footage of him dropping it and they refunded the full cost of the move (£580) and gave me £ 200 for the SL-F1 : )

Every comment on the issue I have seen adamantly discourages using metal betacam tapes on consumer beta machines, and have never seen or heard a recommendation that it is okay. The surface of those tapes is more abrasive and contributes to faster wear on the softer consumer beta video heads, is the explanation I most commonly see.

Cute. Snails. Oh well, should have I just posted the beta for sale on here, for $10?! Oh well. I am selling it because I am replacing it with the Silver unit. I think $160 is more than fair for the unit, especially since I back it with a warranty (which it does not need really). -Andy

But I do wonder why you'd sell off a Beta before you knew for sure if the silver Beta was any good. At the least you'dve been able to transfer the silver Beta parts to the black Beta and/or had a parts Beta. [ ==¼¼¼¼O] - ¼¼_@_

Sorry about being an frumpy old sod. I can fix the Silver unit, that is no problem. I knowthe SL-HF300 *very* well. It also does not hurt to have lots of parts in stock for that model- the SL-HF300 is one of my most common models I service. Anyways the snails seem to like the Ebay black unit already , and I know whomever ends up with it will be getting a great unit. Just drat on the flip down door. Andy

He he he... If snaling gets it, be sure to send it via "Oops".(UPS). they have a tendancy to smash things all to hell. A friend of mine got an expensive and rare Sony video camera that was dropped on its pushrod which went all the way to the lens and cracked its alluminum frame. It must have been dropped off the truck, it would take a hammerblow to do that!

One other thing... If my world clock serves me right it is something like 05:50 in Berlin right now, you sure are up early, Franny!

Inserted it into my 'stack' right underneath the featherweight Mintek DVD player. Blegh. Reserves are a baiting tactic. They let a seller start out at an artificially low price, and hope that auction fever will push it over the reserve price, while if they just started there, they may never get a bid (e.g. that antique vid. camera).
