Anyone ever broke down that word "gastropod"? Boils down to "gastro"- of the stomach, and "pod"- of the feet. Ergo "gastropod"- stomach-feet. Does this mean that the guy that said "An army travels on it's stomach" was illuding that soldiers were snails?

Brenda that phrase (which I think belongs to Napoloeon) eludes to the fact that an army is really only as good as it's food supply. Before the days of the 'MRE' airdrop, supplying food for an army on the march meant that a considerable amount of time in a military campaign consisted of foraging though the countryside for something to eat. This meant that battles were fought as close to the harvest seasons as practicable (and that armies were pretty much like locusts in the devastation they left to occupied lands). Even Hitler had to time his war of annihilation to the light of the harvest moon. He learned too late that all the Blitzkriegs in the world are no match against a Kansas wheatfield or an Iowa cornfield or a Texas cattle ranch...

But I'm assuming you knew that already.

Best link I've found for country by country TV standards:

And an explanation of those standards:

By the way, Singapore uses PAL system(s) B (VHF) and G (UHF) Nicam stereo 230VAC/50Hz

This is going to be fun! - My SLHF PAL 1700 got destroyed by flood, (South England) my insurance company is trying to replace it with a JVC vhs deck! Talk about adding insult to injury- a JVC and a VHS. I my local Sony centre expecting help but no - one there knew waht a Betamax was!!!. What can you do in this situation. I am not prepared to swap my 1700 (which took long enough to get) for a Naff JVC VHS deck - any ideas of how I might obtain a resonable offer.

The 1700 is a commercial machine, isn't it? If you can find documentation proving that, you could AT LEAST get a commercial VCR out of it... Wprth a try. I would explain, fully, how all your tapes are different from the JVC one they want to fob off to you, like LP and cassette, basically say it would be worthless to give a CD player to someone with an LP collection. That's the best I can do...

I feel sorry for all the Beta owners in Prag. I was wondering if the poor 1700 is really a total loss. Couldn't you just hose the thing down with clean water and wait for it to dry? Assuming it has't rusted out or been smashed or the chemicals in capaciters aren't leaking or reacting, there might be a chance it could be saved?

Hi Betagang! Got back from my little vacation break yesterday. Read all the past week's postings and I guess there was a little bit of a dust-up over snalie-types, the resale-value of Betas, and the used beta market. It was quite interesting, and a little bit of controversy now and then on this board is probably healthy for this site, and it certainly keeps things lively around here, if nothing else!

Got home and found the SL-HF450 I bought from the west coast has arrived! The unit was well-packed and arrived in excellent working condition. I have it hooked up to my secondary editing suite, and the unit is performing flawlessly; nice deck! I just checked through ebay, and try as I might I could not resist the urge to pick up that very rare Canadian Magnasonic Beta VCR (looks to be a Sanyo VCR4400 clone). Used BIN and picked it up for 59 bucks. This is only the third or fourth Magnasonic beta I've seen on ebay in the last 2 1/2 years, so this will deserve a nice place in my collection of rare and strange collectible beta VCRs. I'll let you all know more about this rare model when I get it in the mail inthe coming weeks. Howard

I hope the Betas in Passau ,Dresden, Dessau, Magdeberg... can learn to swim. If you can't get them to high ground at least put them on top of your other equipment.Of course all this rain and water is sure to drive out the gastropods

SLO - 1700 Insurance update: - After I was offered the JVC VHS deck, I contacted Sony both the domestic and industrial side. NO HELP AT ALL!!! - My insurance company will only replace with the VHS deck or cash value of the VHS deck. The trouble is I cannot find any information from anywhere that can verify that this is a flagship duplicating machine. Even the Sony Pro dept said it was "Old Hat"!!!! - How can I back up my Laserdisc collection (since they too are now discontinued) to a VHS entry level deck that does not ignore macrovision etc. Any more ideas of what to do - I did think that Sony Would be more help. Hello there !, if someone can help me, please, I have an old sanyo VRC 500 Betamovie video camera wich I can´t use as a recording device because I have not a Betamax VCR and, this kind of cassettes are not available in our stores, so I decided to use the camera in a way alike closed circuit surveillance system, but before I risk myself inside, it would be of great help if someone can tell me from wich point of the electronic card of this model (or other alike camera) can I obtain a video signal capable of being either feed directly trough the "video in" terminals, or through an oscilator for establishing the carrier frecuency for feeding trough the "antenna in" terminal of a TV receiver.

Hi there, I was wondering if someone could answer the following question for me. I'm having a bit of a disagreement with some of my co-workers. They all saythat beta tapes were larger than vhs tapes in the late 70's and 80's and that beta came out before vhs. I disagree, I think beta came out second and thatbeta tapes were smaller. Could someone please help solve this mystery me.

Thanks,Emma

Howard

Emma, the Beta format was indeed introduced about a year before VHS was. The first beta VCR was marketed in 1975; the first VHS unit was not introduced until around mid-1976. Beta and VHS use the same type of tape (1/2 inch magnetic video tape), but the VHS cassettes are about 3/4 inch wider than Beta cassettes, and about a half inch deeper, so VHS cassettes are larger than Beta cassettes in both width and depth, even though they both use the same type of 1/2 inch magnetic tape. Wish I still had some of my SelectaVision discs and U-matic stuff.. and what was the old Sanyo format? V-matic I think, that looked like a largish 8-track tape..

Ultra Mega sleechies to the snail!

Got my SL-2710 today and sure enough it wasn't loading tapes. The fix was easy enough, I replace the loading gears out. While I was checking it I notice the presetter buttons weren't working so I dug out some tact switched and changed them out (though I noticed that a bad solder joint bridging two separate leads my have been the culprit). Unfortunately I can't test the tuner yet as a major thunderstorm swept through town leveling power lines everywhere. Power's been restored but the cable TV is still out.

A question though. Is the SL-2710 not supposed to power up when you put in a tape with the machine turned off? My SL-HF 300 powers on when you stick in a tape but I don't know if that's the case with the 2710. It's so nice to beat the auction snails and get a decent Beta for a decent price and with the MLV-1100 adapter I'll have MTS stereo recordings from all my local cable stations...

when they get the cables back up...

The SL-2710 is functioning normally. The powerswitch has to be "on" in order forthe unit to accept a tape, or eject. The SL-HF300 was among one of the first SonyBeta units to accept a tape without powering up first, or eject without powerup first.Hope that info helps, Andy

Someone in here mentioned a Daewoo DVD player that could be reprogramed to be zone free and macrovision disabled. Someone know the model number, and how to go about the programming? They have a model of Daewoo on sale here, and if it's the one, we want to pick one up and get the work done on it.

Yesterday I was very lucky cos I got an old Dynamichron L-125, which stilled factory sealed in boxin a shop at only 2€. I guess they still have them because of its short length (I saw they also had L-250s but they hadn't put them in the stand or they haven't got any more)They are like classic beta tapes, not like the awful new ones and they (In my oppinion) are better than new ones in beta and superbeta picture quality (they aren't suitable for PRO mode)If someone ever goes to barcelona I can tell them the address of this place. lease feel free to eail me. Regards,

Casimir

PS: In the atpe it says it is a Dynamichron L-125 SD (what does SD means???)What does AVTS stands for (AVTS NICAM decoder, AVTS parallel IF board)

I am looking for a website that sells used betamax tapes. Bulk erased if possible. I live in the US and as such am looking for a vendor that deals with US dollars. I know I came across one about a month ago that sold used tapes at like 90 tapes for $50 or so. Just like me, I had to re-install windows and lost the book mark and haven't found that page again. But in any event, I'm looking for used betamax videos at about 1$ each or so. If anyone knows of such a website, please email me and let me know. Thank you.

Well that damned SL-2710 is yet another 'office tragedy' in my continuing quest for the ultimate Beta system. For no good reason the video head froze up (as in stopped turning but still imparting electrical resistance to being moved) For a while it would unfreeze for a few plays but then freeze up again till no amount of coaxing and/or begging would induce it to rotate.

Don't bother telling me what went wrong because the piece-o-feces is now rubble on the porch and some scraps parts in the basement. And no rude comments about me being the 'grim reaper of Betas. I'm feeling bad enough as it is. Probably just 'end it all' and buy a JVC deck or something...

Anybody need an SL-2710 loader assembly, capstan or reel drive? How about the display board, face plate with flipper door or the cover. The tuner board and a few others are intact.

I've got the SL-2710 manual and the RMT-318 remote for sale if someone wants to make an offer. I also have spare copies of an MLV-1100 MTS adapter manual if somebody needs that as well. The MTS adapter (and it's original manual) I'm keeping for my SL-HF 300 but if somebody made an offer sweet enough I might let it go. _@_v$$$

Now I think I'll go to the beach, gather up a bucket of pond snails, crack them open and feed them to some hungry minnows.

I wonder if when the electronics industry and recording industry executives gathered together to carve up the world into 'regions' for the DVD format, they borrowed the meeting room of the Trilateral Commision and/or Council on Foreign Relations or the Illuminati or were they staying at the Bildeberg Hotel or did they book time at the Skull & Bones clubhouse...

or did they go to Snailie's place...

Hi Joe -

Regarding videotapes, you can probably find that seller with creative google searching. You might want to check out these auctions as well - the below link is a list of a seller's auctions. The last eight listed are for betacam oxide tapes that are great for betamax units - better than any high-grade tape you can buy. I've never bought from this seller, but these look like a pretty good deal to me. Obviously, you do NOT want to buy the metal ("SP" or "MA") tapes, but the BCT-20G's (~L500 length) and BCT-30G's (~L750 length) look like good lots to look into. I wouldn't recommend the 3M lot. The tapes are fine, but the labels are impossible to remove from the tapes. Imagine - an adhesives company too. You can't get those darn labels off.

In case the link doesn't work, the seller's name is jon-dude . As I mentioned, I have never purchased from this person. But lots of sellers sell these, and they are an often overlooked bargain I think mainly because people do not know enough about betacam tapes to bid on them.

Good luck.

I've purchased tapes from this guy before http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewListedItems&userid=yacoli

He sells generous lots of Betacam Oxide tapes that are of pretty good quality but you will be peeling a lot of stickers off them. Seems studio techies are pretty blithe about layering scads of stickerage on poor little tapes...

Shame you killed the SL-2710. The problem it has was a very simple fix. It would have involved cleaning the brown glue off of the videohead stator hall sensor. If that would have not fixed it, then a stator assembly would have. I have a dead SL-2710 here myself.. got killed by a powersurge. how bad off is yours now, are the main boards toast? Or still intact?Andy

Regarding the betacams: I've bought 4 or 5 lots of tapes off that yacoli guy and have been satisfied w/ every one! However, I didn't have any major trouble regarding labels on the tapes themselves, but many of the cases had layers of "content" labels stuck on the back of them. Actually made the whole lot easier to peel off, though! You're right that yacoli hasn't had any up in quite awhile. He once had tons. Maybe he finally sold out? :(

Finally, I've never biught from that jon-dude (or whatever) guy, but he has quite a few lots of BCT-30G's up and I need to replenish my supply (got ample 20G's). Might grab a couple of those auctions! But to the guy wanting some, if you go the betacam route, be sure to look closely at the pictures as the 30G's come in both large and small cassettes (What was Sony's thinking on that one??). It's the small's you'd be after!
