My GCS-1 came with 3 NP-11s that last for an hour each, but, let's not forget they have to power a CRT finder. So I can fill an L-750 on all the batteries. I've never had to shoot video for more thhan about 80 minutes, though. It is important to charge them right beofre you use them, though. I learned that the hard way and went through three in 45 minnutes. Fortunately there was an outlet nearby and whoever bought the tripple chrger for it got also the plug-in adapter. I think it was owned by a professional outfit and they never used it.

I've been a visitor to this forum for several years but felt no compunction to post a message until now, and especially with the recent obsession with EBay and the ever-increasing nastiness. However, the attacks on Andy Sanchez require that I say something. Regardless of what might have happened in the past, (and where is the proof that any wrong-doing had occurred?) my dealings with Andy have been nothing but positive. I have used his services 4 times this year: to repair one of my SLHF1000's, both of my SLHF900's, and one of my SLHF550's, and each time the repair was completed in a timely manner, and at a cost that can't be approached by ANYONE! One of the 900's required extensive repairs that even if they could have been done by anyone else, Sony included, would have cost hundreds of dollars more than I paid. And to top it off, Andy has picked up and delivered each deck he's worked on. Granted, that's a benefit I enjoy by living nearby, but check with your local repair shop and see what they might say about pickup and delivery. Fat chance! I have a large number of VCR's, and to have a resource like Andy to maintain my ageing Beta collection is invaluable. I will continue to use his services whenever there's a need.

I agree entirely. Andy is, like I said, 33% of the reason I even go after questionable betas and a good 25% of the reason I stick with beta at all! Having reapirs done at such reasonable prices is toog good to pass up, i.e. I paid $80 for my 900, and $100 to get it fixed. I would have to spend at least $ 200 for a VHS machine that barely comes close to the 900 in video prowess, and, moreover, is VHS, so it is inherently at a disadvantage right there.

Just for laughs, I had called my local Sony repair center for a quote on fixing just an ailing HF-300. How much? $212 just to bring the damn thing in. We didn't talk about parts yet! I'm going to send it in to Andy; I was waiting to see if he perfected the 300 Superbeta." Was gonna have him do both.

No one is saying that Andy at this date and time is the best thing since slice bread. But you all seem to be afraid or dont want to see>> (Back issue Beta informer) about the large amount of Beta Machines and $100.00 deposits for repairs that were never returned. I wonder if he had pulled this on you, if you would be defending him now. Before I go to the back issues of the BETA INFORMER to show you lazy people what he has done, I ask ANDY again, have you ever kept any machines or down payment for reapair and not return either one??? But remember (Back issue Beta informer) LETS SEE WHAT ANDY HAS TO SAY...

Humph. How many people here can say that they are not without any fault, that they never stole anything or made any kind of mistake, never tampered with the mail, never did anything wrong. We've all made mistakes, and we regret the truly wrong things we've done. Why anyone needs to bring up this particular one is beyond me. Come to terms with it, Andy made a mistake. Who hasn't? I'd bet every repair bussiness that ever was screwed up once or twice, lost someone's VCR or had a visit from Mr. murphy and the law of selective gravitation. What's gone is gone, what's past is past. Burry the freaking hatchet, allready.

Howdy. Well, looks like I'll actually be getting myself an SL-HF750. YAY! Anyhow, a question. For shipping, I know there's screws to protect the drawer. Where exactly are they, and are they a special size, or can they be gotten at a hardware store? And, if the screws aren't used during shipping how likely is it to get damaged? Thanks!

Well I'll be dipped! I bid on that very 750! Couldn't be happier unless I won it myself. Good to see it go to a "Chat Page" regular. I think if you have him get some blue painters tape and tape the drawer in place, you should do OK. YOu have to use that tape, it leaves no residue. I've bid on some other stuff since, but I won't let it out, you know, loose lips draw snails!

Congrats!

Beef Jerky:

There will be two screws in the rear of the unit 3/8" in diameter. Theyare quite obvious as they have a red tint to them. Then there will be twomore indentical looking screws on the bottom panel of the unit (flip itover). Remove. You will see 4 screw holes on the left rear of the unit. Retain the screws there.

I am going by memory here.. there may be one screw on the rear of the deck.Anyways look for the "big" red tinted screws. Simple as that.

Hehe, well, I finally found one that didn't go over $300-$400! Even this one's a bit out of my price range, but my credit bill won't come till next month :) Speaking of which, now that I've got this (which will go nicely with my SL-HF860D, I have two other beta's for sale, which I'll offer to this page first.

First is a Toshiba V-S54 Hi-fi VCR. In excellent cosmetic shape (just a few small scratches and scuffs). Also, excellent operationally. Heads seem to have had very little use, and everything works as it should. I will guarantee it to work on arrival! I'm asking only $125 plus shipping for this one. The entire tape path will be professionally cleaned before shipping. I can disconnect it and take pictures with my digital camera if requested (I wasn't planning on taking it out until I got the SL-HF750). Here is a picture of what the model looks like though (except the buttons on mine are black, rather than silver): http://www.geocities.com/videoholic2000/vs443.jpg

Also, I have for sale a Toshiba V-M32. Very good cosmetic shape. Plays very well, though it does have one problem. The loading ring seems to get stuck when trying to unload the tape and requires a small push to get it started. Otherwise works fine. Am asking $25 plus shipping for this one, and am selling as-is. Here is a picture of what that model looks like, except that mine *does* have the door on the right side: http://members.sparedollar.com/scrowbar/toshiba2.jpg

Well, I finally went thru that HF450 and there is nothing wrong with it. Very good condition inside and out. Of course I am biased owning an HF750 4-head (which has the "PRO" heads), but this will suffice until I stumble across either a HF 1000, or another HF 750 or an HF 860D or HF 870D. I will be getting the Toshiba VM xxx out and check it over and dig up the remote and manual to sell, if there is an intrest. I don't sell on Ebay, just buy, it will be for sale here.Later. Pepse.

In response to Olive, please go to the Beta Informer archives and research issues #146,#147,#148 etc.etc. Questions regarding Andy's reliability surface in and around these issues culminating in the removable of his name, from the end of the issues, as a reliable Beta tech......I am very surprised at you, Olive. By the way I checked out those Beta informers and talked to Andy himself and it seems like one of those cases where everything in life went wrong all at once. So to the whiner who won't leave a real return address. Suck it up and take it like a man! Crap happens. Nobody likes a crybaby. I've lost enough money on bum e-Beta purchases to have bought a brand new ED-Cam at least twice but you don't hear me bellyaching about it. [email protected]'re right. I did whine over an incident that occured a year and a half ago. I just got so angry when I chanced upon this chat page and saw Andy Sanchez conducting business as usual. Then when I read Sean's almost hysterical pleadings about where is my SL-HF900, it was as if history was repeating itself. Here's a suggestion. Since you say Andy is back on his feet again, would it be possible for him to make restitution to the many fellow BETAPHILES who entrusted their VCR'S to him and were left with nothing? I have resolved myself to the fact that my SL-HF1000 is history, but maybe he can make good on the others. We went thru some bad times during the BETA INFORMER issues 146, 147, 148, 149 etc. and I certainly do not want a repeat performance. Best wishes, Irwin.

I had remembere hearing the same thing about Andy, although I trusted him entirely when I sent the VCR to him and I still trust him. I didn't think he made off wiht it, although that was admitedly the tiniest of possibilites lingering at the back of my fevered immaginiation.... I just wondered what had happened. And my suspiscions were confirmed, he was on vacation. Cool. So I'm glad you've been able to let the past be the past, and I think you might become a good person for this page, not a Troll.

Anyway, moving right along, I just got off the phone with VCRGary, to whom I am going to ship the JVC edit deck. If he can fix it, he will send it back and charge me. If it will prove to be an expensive undertaking, he will keep the machine and trade me something fo rthe carcass. There is a chance I can get a GCS-50 out of this, so I'd like some advice here. A working BR-S611U commercial SVHS edit deck with scads of features, or a GCS-50...

Thanks!

This whole thing still puzzles me.

One: This "[email protected]" character reveals his name "Irwin". Now, I still haveno idea who you are , and why you must insist upon me owing you a SL-HF1000, much lessanything else is BEYOND ME.

It seems like you have a motive here- to try to expose me for what has happened in thepast, plain and simple. Now why you want to do this I don't know. I have made mistakesand bad decisions in the past but WHO HAS NOT. NO ONE IS PERFECT.

If you keep on putting my name in slander , then what can I do? Is there any legalrecourse that can be taken? Probably not in the realm of the internet.

If anyone really wants to dig into the past informer issues by all means do it. What thisperson is missing here is that after all these people posted complaints against me on theInformer is I did take care of alot of the complaints that had been issued upon me. Therewere some that simply could not be resolved for one reason or another. Sometimes you cannot "fix" it all (literally and not literally speaking).

At this point I am done with having to post about the past. I will remain puzzled as to whyyou did this, but what else can I do.

I went through those notorious back-issues of the Beta Informer and have to agree there were a lot of posts dealing with Andy Sanchez and his repair business. True, there were some people who were disatisfied, (and what business doesn't have disgruntled customers), but the overwhelming majority of the posts were by subscribers who had only positive dealings with Andy, and were sorry to lose his services. And let's be clear about his "removal" from the Informer as a resource for VCR repair: that was done by Andy himself, not wanting to deal with the hassles any longer (Issue #147). I'd like to relate a personal experience with a VCR repair. When my wife bought me my SLHF2100 as a Christmas gift several years ago, she purchased an extended warrantee with it. After some time the inevitable happened and the lights on the back-lit control pad went out, but it was still under said warrantee, so I took it to the Good Guys store where she bought it, to have it fixed. After more than 3 months, and numerous phone calls, and their repeated offer to relace the 2100 with Sony's best VHS machine, I gave up and picked up the 2100, unrepaired.I guess I could have raised a ruckus, contacted the head of the company, sued, whatever, but why bother? They simply couldn't get the parts from Sony, and though they might have eventually it was more important for me to have my VCR. Lesson learned is that sometimes, through no fault of their own, even a big-time enterprise fails to deliver. Why hold a grudge?

I am a technician of some 30 years experience, including servicing various types of video recording equipment from 2" open reel Ampex gear to V-matic to Beta to VHS, along with a stint as a broadcast engineer for a major market group. I have more or less retired since moving to Korea, because I can't have a job or I would violate my visa. Also, I haven't any equipment to do service work anymore, so I send my own units to Andy Sanchez for service.

But I'll say this, I would rather deal with the likes of Franny, Sean, Olive and Jesse than a sanctimonious, self righteous jerk such as yourself. At least they are human beings, and, rather than unstable and vindictive as you state, are as a rule quite friendly and helpful to others. They also have something seemingly lacking in your life, a sense of humour.

I could make dry, technical conversation here for days.. but I would grow tired of reading same. I personally like that there are living beings posting here.

Thus far, I have seen much relevant information traded here by the regulars (I still do not consider myself as part of the "family" as yet), along with the wit to keep the day light. :) I have yet to see anything on topic from the trolls, except in the case of the accusations of Andy. And for my money, these should be kept between the appropriate parties, and not aired in a public forum.. as airing them here can be considered libel in a court of law. Even the Snailies could go overboard in that respect, but haven't as yet.

At any rate, we do not own the chat, we are guests here of those that do, most of us here by their grace as we are not even PAL ßeta users (most are NTSC, some are SECAM/MESECAM). I am thankful to have this forum to garner friendships and discuss and learn about the different ßetaLore, and even a couple formats I wasn't previously familiar with.

Take care, all, and stay well. :)

excerpt from Beta Informer #146:I was the proud owner of a Sony SL-HF600 until it experienced a strangemalfunction. I sent it to the "West Coast Guru" Andy Sanchez who hadsaid he knew what the problem was by my description and if I sent $100with the machine I could expedite repair. Four weeks later I had notheard anything so I e-mailed Andy with an inquiry. He sent back areply stating he was busy fixing his transmission and had had to order arepair manual for my VCR. This satisfied me for another 2 months butafter that I began to wonder. He finally replied after many e-mails thathe could not find the problem. I told him I wanted my machine backanyway and to please return it pronto. This did no good for another twoweeks. Finally I sent him a letter stating I would come out and pick upthe machine myself which would not be beneficial to him. He then sent itback with hardware missing and of course no money or explanation. Anyone out there who wants a Beta unit repaired would be advised not tohave Andy Sanchez involved.

Chucky: Two things: 1: I think we've all come to terms with the fact that Andy has made a mistake or two, but we still like him enough to use his repair service. 2: I think we're all smart enough to find the archive of the beta informer, there is no real point in posting it here, unless you actively want to defame Andy. I don't think people who Own Ford cars would be very appreciative if you walked in on them and did nothing but flash newpaper articles about the Pinto and how it would explode! (Which is another story entirely)

And I'm not kidding around. There are people who get off on calling some airline after a crash and making a 'reservation' based on where that plane had crashed. Or like when all the jocks in Kurt Cobain's home town school would go around the hall announcing "Nirvana concert tickets - half price!" the day after Cobain killed himself...

Yes, and people called to say they were trapped under the WTC wreckage. Now, i am NOT a fan of Nirvana, but I do know that it is now believed that Cobain didn't kill himself, rather he was murdered, because supposedly he did it with a shotgun, which is almost impossible to do, I saw a show on forensics and one case was a woman who supposedly killed herself with a shotgun, but they proved that she couldn't do it! Neat? or what? that's all, just a fact for interested people to look at, but of course we can't be certain. Anyway, I personally think the trolls should leave us alone, or at least prove useful. You've all said you piece, we know what you think about Andy, we know he made a mistake. dragging it out again won't fix it nor will it get rid of Andy or get us to abandon his services, it will just piss us all off. I'm not against freedom of speach on this board, just agains saying the same thing over and over and over and trying to get differnt results.

Well when I try to forward virus mail to Yahoo's abuse centre they refuse even to take it because of the virus in it. It seems they'll glady pass you contaminated mail but have set themselves up so they don't have to worry about it.

I wonder why the people who run mail servers have yet to figure out that any mail with a 'spoofed' return address is likely spam or a virus or simply trouble and should be automatically blocked? I imagine that would cut down most of the spam traffic...

for a day or two till they found some other loophole.

Yahoo seems to have a policy of not responding to their users... in fact, every time I have tried their "contact" e-mails, my mail comes back to me as undeliverable (non-existant mailbox)...

Sean:

Some folks just have a very strange sense of reality.

Having read the excerpt from Beta Informer that was posted here, I really don't see a big problem at all. So Andy was slow at the time.. feces occurs.. life is not always neat, clean and well oiled. The guy got his machine back, and one can only speculate as to all the goings on, and the quality of the e-mails exchanged at the time. I do know that there are occasions when a repair that seems simple can be maddeningly obstinate. I have worked for places that could not, dispite their best efforts, obtain parts for various items (car stereos are notorious), which displeased the customer, and, at times, the units were returned to the customer as "basket cases". Is this proper procedure? Not really. But it does happen.

Take care, all, and stay well.

Yep, that happens. All the time. The larger the scale, the easier it is to live down, i.e. a company that handels 1000 items a day and 10 are irreperable, they still have 990 good tiems, but if you hadle 10 a day, the one irreperable item sticks out like a soar thumb, because it is more obvious. Since SLHF1000 himslef doesn't seem to care anymore, if I remember he said he was having a bad time when he posted in those issues, well, that's OK, just like Andy, he made mistakes. We all did. Now Chucky is championing a cuase SLHF1000 gave up, and newbie, is, well, of course, newbie, ready to contradict anything we say.

Okay...the reason I started posting on this chat page was to learn more about the superior video format, not to hear personal attacks about people stealing SL-HF1000s or people being "unstable" or "vindicative". My opinion is that the people who post regularly on this site such as Olive, Franny, Sean, Andy S., Jesse, Brenda Ann,Edward IV, etc should welcome aspiring Betaphiles to this page because after all, if I'd just found an SL-HF900 in my late uncle's attic or something, I'd want someplace to learn about it. Why the heck these "troll" people bother joining up and insulting people is beyond me. That said, I try to post on this site only when I have a question about Beta or need to share something Beta-wise like if I've just gotten a new machine. So my Beta question for the day is: How many heads does the SL-HF600 have? I think it must be more that 2 because it has an absolutely perfect picture in pause and frame x frame mode, but I don't think it's a 4 head machine. So is it 3, or 5, or what? All my Sanyos I can tell are 2-headers, because their pause and slo-mo pictures leave a lot to be desire, especially in BII recordings, which nearly all of mine are.

To Brenda Ann, Since you didn't see a problem with the unfortunate slob who had to beg to get his Betamax back try this story that appeared in The Beta Informer and give another stupid excuse for so called "mistakes"...........Yes, sadly, I must agree with John about repair tech, AndySanchez. After I enthusiastically gave Andy a thumbs up for repairing mySanyo 7100 in 1998, he has failed me this time. It happened early lastyear when the Sanyo began acting up again. I personally gave it to Andyfor repair, along with a Sony SL-2000. We talked on the phone andexchanged e-mail for a while so that I could be kept up-to-date on theprogress of the repairs. However, he then suddenly stopped allcommunication! I made repeated e-mail's, repeated phone calls. Noresponse to the e-mail's, only the answering machine for the phonecalls. I even called his parents and told them to relay him myconcerns. Nothing!!! Where were my machines? Were they ever repaired?Well, I haven't seen my VCR's in over a year. The only thing Ican do is camp out at his last known address, wait for him to show up, andconfront him. I want back my VCR's.Therefore, I cannot recommend Andy Sanchez, and I advise that hisname been taken off at the end of this list..........................................................Just another mistake, huh BRENDA ANN!!!!By the way, dear, you said you sold your SL-HF1000 because of space limitations, yet I see you are bidding on more BETAS on E-Bay. What's up with that? Was there some problem with the 1000 that you were trying to dump on some unsuspcting schmuck?I had to block my e-mail because of a lot of filthy, threatening letters.

Hmm. I am thinking it over again. You claim I owe you a SL-2000 and VCR-7100 Sanyo? Two units, right? And you sent me the 7100 back after 3+ years of getting good use out of it? And then I keep the unit to dispose of afterwards right? I am just wanting to keep things straight here. I just checked my service record database. I never had a SL-2000 and VCR-7100 that belonged to one person and were serviced by me. I definately do not see anything spanning from 1998-2001 from the same person either. In fact I only serviced one Sanyo VCR-7100 and that was back in 1996. That is a very rare machine you talking about here, so it sticks out like a sore thumb. Something does not seem to compute here. If you are just trying to make a claim based on what someone else has posted on the informer then I would like to let you know you will not get away with that. Thank you, Andy

Now this is just wrong. I understand that if you have a legitimate complaint against Andy, you would want him to set it right, if he can. I would want him to as well, but now, if you are just trying to see if you can get some free VCRs out of him, why don't you go take a long walk off a short piere. just because Andy made a mistake doesn't make him fair game for scam artists. If you have a real complaint, try contacting him by Email, or phone. If you post hear you just look like a troll trying to defame him.

Jesse, yes I do. I am sorry that I used the EDC-55 for parts to fix a JVC deck with.

I emailed this "Chuckie" character, to see if I could get his real name. Undeliverable mail the mail demon said.

At this point I must say I will not answer to anymore to this individual(s). At this point I am almost certain it is ONE person doing this, someone who was upset with me SEVERAL years ago for whatever "bad" thingI did then.

What is kind of sad here, is this whole tirade against me reminds me juvenilethings kids play upon each other.

Is it really that important , to whoever I supposedly took advantage of solong ago , and years later you must then try to re-expose me for the dishonest, disreputable , evil bad person that I supposedly was then, and now?

Give me a break. It is so hard to believe how childish grown up people reallycan be.

It is a total waste of time and energy on both parts. I know whomever is postingthese messages must be getting a charge off of watching the responses fromme, and others.

It would be great to advise to simply ignore such future postings but I knowI can not control what others will say. But I can start, by simply not choosingto reply to these children who are crying over their broken Ice Cream cone.

Is anyone with me here? I appreciate the words of support, and as I saidfrom the start- I was the first to admit I made some mistakes but I don'tfeel like I still deserve to be dragged out on the ground over somethingthat happened so long ago.

Thank you for reading this, it is my "final word" on the matter.

Interesting, concerning the HF300 vs 500. I always wanted to know what exactly was the difference between them. That was until the day I took the cover off to clean the heads. I noticed it had 2 pairs of wires running out to one side of the disk. So it had to be a 3-head. Now, Andy confirms it.

And speakin' of: Andy, I still haven't sent you out that sick HF300, the one w/ the weird playback issue I told you about awhile ago. I keep on forgetting to bring it up to the PO, but I'm doing so this week! I'd like you to bring it back to health. I don't care what any troll says on here!

up until a couple years ago you could order a brand new SL-HF-2000 from Sony. No more. you can still get a new one if you want to spend $999, while supplies last, from certain companies. Don't bother. Get one from Ebay. you'll spend a lot, but not as much as for a new one taht is inferior to certain used ones. Look for the SL-HF-1000, the SL-HF-2100, the SL-HF-750, and the SL-HF-900 if you want to be happy. If you don't want/need superebta, the SL-2710 and its bigger brother the SL-2700 are the way to go. If you only need Mono, the SL-5800 (With remote) and SL-2500 kick some serious "@$$" as it were.

If you're desparate for a new Beta and don't mind some slight compatability problems then you'll have to go to Japan or at least order from http://www.pricejapan.com for about $900/$1500 dollars or so. The available models are the SL-200D($900 and the EDV-9000 ($1500). They run on 100V power and RF-out on Japanese channels 1 and 2 (not 3 and 4 like US TVs) and they can't recieve US stereo TV broadcasts but they are NTSC units. Better hurry because Sony plans on making only 2000 more Betas before they finally cease production totally.

Otherwise try looking on E-bay for a used Beta VCR or try the Southern Advantage Company... http://161.58.152.172/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=5031066&Category_Code=Beta+VCRs

...which still offers a few US Beta VCRs.

OK, folks, in regards to Andy S. I have been reading this whole thing about Andy for x days now and I have decided to say something in defense of him. I think it was in '97 or '98 I sent him a SL-HFT7 to get repaired, along with the remote and another remote. We kept corresponding for quite sometime on the status of the deck; plain and simple it was a pain in the arse. Well, somewhere along the line he sopped corresponding. I got rather annoyed. I do recall someone on the informer posting about a similar situation and emailed that person directly and discussed Andy. As I recall that person did get a response from Any after posting his complaint on the Informer. I went about my usual "contact Any by email and phone" and after awhile I just gave up. And then recently he posted here on the Chat Page and I decided to just mind my own business and see what transpires. And as I read the post about "where's Andy, 'cause he has my Beta and won't return my emails" I coulda said something about my past situation but didn't. Then I read about some clowns that supposedly had problems in the past with Andy, too, and I just kept my fingers quiet (can't say "kept my mouth shut" as you all can't here me LOL). Anyway I obviously had a bad situation with Andy and didn't bring it up on the Chat Page. Why?? Because I guess I feel I am above the clowns for keeping silent. I see that Andy is trying to do his best again. I am glad "you are back Andy", and I hope that things go well this time. So, to make sure everones understanding me: I have NO bad blood towards Andy Sanchez. And yes if the need arises I would send him vcrs and camcorders to be repaired. One thing that impressed me about Andy were the phone conversations we had dealing with vcrs and such. I had no intentions of bringing up my situation, but he asked for defense and I gave him some. Yeah I know the Clowns are thinking "Let's see Andy screwed him over on a deck and yet he defends him??" All I can think of to them Clowns is : BITE MY A**. And don't bother us with your drivel.

Later. Pepse.
