Now you can start yer own Beta transfer service...
Assuming you have one of those machines from the 'other white meat' format...
Actually, that's my idea. I have Beta, VHS, (Both Super and HiFi in both) EIAJ that needs repair, and lots of Umatic. I need 8mm and I will be set.
Sean
Weeeeee!! me love my u-matic.... (hug hug hug)
I am looking for an early Betamax model SL-7200(1977) with the original papers(warranty, etc.). Any help would be appreciated.
___@_¼¼ try eBay!!!
SLO-1400: Mine is playing a tape now. Works great. These are real solid machines, and it works fine even though the running hours meter has topped out long ago (meaning well over 10,000 hours on this beast!) and the head hours meter is somehwere around 1500, this is a great machine. THe only "Problem" is the front pannel looks like it was shot, there is no power button, no switch to select HiFi or not, no switch for Audio preset or sliders but all the microswitches are present and operating, and it is superbeta tollerent, too! IT takes a minute to switch functions, and the front doors no longer close, but it works great!
thanks for helpful hint, olive, but need more info before sending 1500bux+ overseas.am familiar with japanese mts, voltage and channel 1+2 problems.my history has included slhf400,550,600,900 plus two 750's and two 2100's.do my own head replacements and minor repairs with vom, service manuals and schematics.know some shortcuts but am no pro by any means.thanks again for your help, joel
Andy or somebody...
The SLO-1400 has a switch near the bottom, it says PLayer recorder Beta HiFi normal. THe side that is player is the Beta HiFi and the side that is recorder is Normal. WHat does it do?
Sean
My Toshiba VS36 doesn't like copy protection. Unlike the Sony's I have used.Any other owners of this model notice this?
More SLO-1400 data, there is a switch on the back, that when you put it on, makes the unit record first thing when you poewr it up, so you can link a whole bunch of them to a power switch for duplicating. Be careful!
Sean
To Sean: You should post some piccys of that poor defencless SLO-1400 so that we might open an investigation as to it's horrible abuse. We are thankful you are giving it a loving home but we feel justice should be served. Right and proper-like...
Frankie "knuckles' and Stig "the soprano-maker"
If that's not Franny or Olive, I'll eat my hat. Pix to follow. Soon. I've nothing better to do. it's current state is the result of being used as a duplicator, hence the controls are missing, they didn't want anybody to monkey with them.
Sean
Hi Charlie,Thanks for the info on my SL-HF400. Becuase the unit stops when I press the PLAY button it is the voltage regulator. I am not very knowledgeable, but not afraid to take it apart. The only problem is I don't know where or what the voltage regulator looks like. Charlie, would it be possible for you to describe it to me and tell me where it's at? Luckly I have a 2nd unit I use as spare parts. Thanks again for your help. My wife was just about ready to thorw all my BETAS in the dumpster. Now I can have second life.Jeff

SLO-1400 page. I will link from my page to this eventually, but for now you all can see it.
Sean
looks like Yahoo decided to pull the plug on your site for the next hour...
You might try halving the size of the piccys you loaded. And cropping a few would help as well. Anything larger than 100k is going be a 'slug' to load and since your image sizes are already limited by the page software, why load more than you need?
another hint...
You can make pages open in a new window with this link script...
{a href="www.link" target="_blank"}text for link{/a}
replace the { & } with < & >
jeff, voltage reg should be the largest flat ic bolted to the heat sink.heat sink located under ventilation holes at left rear of unit.soldering necessary.desoldering braid recommended. joel
Damn those "geocities" people. Ah well. I'm used to a high-speed connection anyway.
Well I'm not getting broadband because I don't need to pay double the money to get pop-ups and spam twice as fast...
jeff, only use volt reg from junk slhf400 or order part from sony.don't try to substitute with part from different model. joel
Regarding the SLO-1400, I'd love to see some close-ups of its innerds. To see how it compares w/ the SL-5200's. I now have 3 of those beasties. Two working, one that I'm prolly gonna work on when I get the chance (having the ops/serv manuals and all). I'd consider getting an SLO-1400 off that dude, but I'd rather not get one that looks like its been a war!
sleeech!
What have to be the murkiest auction pix ever - is that one of them Roswell aliens in the background?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1768746961
For about 9 or so SLO-1400s (the theme for tonite?) $29 start bid and they're not all working at the moment...
I have never seen a SL-HF400 that would power up, load a tape, fastforward, rewindBUT YET have a bad STK5441 IC regulator. You can try replacing it, but don't be surprised ifthe machine responds in the exact same way.. When STK5441 IC fails in the SL-HF400 it always will cripple the deck completely. That means: Deck will powerup, but no transport functions to speak of. No TV tuner functions to speak of. The Green LED powerlight (on the powerbutton) will fail to light up. Good luck, Andy
Joel, my HF750 is using the voltage reg from an HF400. As Andy states the STK5441 IC is what matters. ICBM but I think all Sony SuperBetas used the STK5441. A soldering braid?? Nah, I don't like them. I use a vacuum pen thingy I got from Rat Shack.
I think I brought this up before but, a blank NTSC tape should work inna PAL machine; I have 6 Pal tapes of the other format that I use in that other format and the only annoying thing is the tape length. Pix quality on my wife's 6 head Toshi is better than most US blank tapes. My Pal tapes are Akai's, IIRC.
Later. Pepse.
jeff, clearly andy disagrees with charlies diagnosis.andy is a PROFESSIONAL beta tech,so you would be wise not to waste your time on the voltage reg.i recently resurrected one of my slhf750's by tracing low voltages to the reg with my vom."crippled" was the precise state of my unit till i replaced the reg.now considering andy's suggestion i replace my slhf2100's t and s tape sensors before submitting unit for repair..joel
pepse,my service manual for slhf900 calls for stk5441, looks like you're right joel

TO Olive/Franny/Sean or who ever can help me, If I purchased a SL-25 or SL-100 Video Recorder from America would it work here in England.thanks John
sort of. You would need to supply it with 117 volts, at 60cps, to run it, and then you would need a monitor capable of displaying NTSC, and NTSC tapes to feed it, although it would record NTSC on to blanks, from anouther NTSC source. If you have a multistandard monitor and an AC converter, it may be worth your time to play back NTSC tapes, but you won't get much use out of it as a recorder.
Sean
To Who ever can help me - If I was to purchase a SL-100 or SL-25 Video from America would I be able to use it in England, can someone be kind enough to answer this question, thanks John.
Dear Sean many thanks.regards john
Hello
Hello,
Does anyone know if super beta and pro beta players are compatible with the ed beta metal tapes? Are these ed beta tapes better pro x tapes, or could they possible damage the heads of normal betamax players? I don't want to kill my video because of my lack of knowledge. Thanks to anyone who can answer this. Regards to all you fine people who use betamax.
Yep, you should not put metal tape in a conventional beta machine. The metal tapes will polish the heads real well, but that means they'll eat 'em up faster than the cat can lick its ear. Keep metal tapes out of all but ED beta and Betacam SP players.
Sean
Nice one Sean, here I am looking at these fine tapes, wondering what they will be like if I taped on them, and then thinking I better check first. Thanks for your reply and saving my heads. Damn, these tapes are brand new. Anyone need 10 ed tapes for an ed beta?
Just got an old "Superscope" tapedeck. Works great, considering how old it is. I have a LOT of sony stuff!!!!
that sounds quite safe, perhaps I'll just keep them then and start a sony collection!
Just so you all know I have a new email adress. Betamax Rules!
Regarding that nine SLO-1400's auction on eBay: I just lovethe shipping part; $ 30 to mail or $100 to deliver locally. If the SLO-1400 is nearly the same internally, I'd take a chance and get one of those "fixer-upper" beasties.
Careful w/ your email address Andy. You'll start getting tons of African bankscam spam.
Yeah, I get three of those a day now. Wish I could send a virus to THEM! Tell me, why don't hackers attack these poeple? Why do I get viruses, not spammers? Ah well, we can dream, can't we? ...... and the "snookie's revenge" Virus crppled the spammer's entire network, while simlutaneously subscribing him to every porn site on the net".......
Stuporskope? Is it a Beta or a VidiCorder open reel? :) Me and my nape adaptations.. He hee heeee
nape? did I have a cold?!! nah.. I meant NAME.. :)
Superscope is a tapecorder, 1/4" audio. it is very cool but needs a lube. Got more lube, so I'll do it all ata once, the 1400, the vidieocorder, and the tapecorder all need it.
Sean
*sniff *sniff.. I still miss my Teac X-7R :(
*sniff* now you got me misty over my TEAC-A170....
And me over my A-6010... I still have the Uher 7300D, though.

Me, I miss my Revox G36 Tube Reel-Reel. It was a 3 head unit, still sporting theoriginal Telefunken 12AX7's. It made wonderful recordings, and had very wide dynamicrange considering its age . I am currently restoring a pair of Dynaco ST-70 tube ampies for my main listening . Plan on running each mono bridged . Should be nice. Andy
A friend of mine and I came up with the ultimate system: Matched Marantz tube amps, Altec-Lansing "Voice of the Theater"s, an Eidiphor TV projector, and video recording VIA an IVC 9000, the best analog VTR ever made, so good you could go down 29 generations and still be broadcast! Of course you'd have to set it up in an airplane hangar.
Sean
my 3head viking 88 and 433 now guard the snow tires in my garage.anybody got a tandberg or magnacord?
I have a working Dokorder that needs some TLC applied to the switches and controls. Any offers? I just picked up a Pioneer RT-707 rack mount reel to reel (though an RT-909 would have been better.. those 10" reels hold a lot.)
I see we're into audio gear now. ;) Well, I once had a nice Teac open reel deck. Eventually, I had now further use for it and sold it. Although, the most interesting piece of gear I've acquired is a vintage 3-head Sony Elcaset recorder. That format they introduced around the same time as beta where they were looking to marry the quality of ¼" w/ the convience of a cassette. Great, but nearly all the tapes I got w/ it are worn to hell. And they're nearly the same size as a beta (although thinner)! My thought here is to get a stock of open reel tape of the same formulation and respool them. Afterall, I've saved many an old beta cassette from the landfill in much the same way! ;)
The best moment of my EL-5 Elcaset was just after the wonderfully solid click when those big beefy solenoids started everything going. That was when you heard total silence before the track began. And the lack of distortion even when our keyboard player thought his solo should be about 10 db above the level check he gave us before the show. Try that on a Phillips audio cassette. Got it from the Sony Store clearance sale in 1982 for $199. Of course I sold it in 1985 when the band split up due to a marriage epidemic.
Oops forgot the Elcaset links.http://home.iae.nl/users/pb0aia/cm/elcaset/http://mhintze.tripod.com/audio/elcaset.htm
Wish Sony had made a dual B1s model similar to this dual Hi8 editor.

That Elcaset stuff looked interesting...
I suppose there's no way to get new tapes for it though...
Speaking of obscure audio format stuff, I have some old Technics ads showing a digital tape format that used VHS tapes but loaded them in a contraption that looked like an oversized Radio Shack mini tape deck...

I think the SLO-1400 blew a fuse. I will look into it later today. At the very worst, VCRGary will ship me another one. I think the SL-20 was the only Beta I ever have had that has given me no trouble.
Sean
scratch that, when I got it it had some trouble that cleared up and has never shown up again. Ah well. At least I willhave the 900 soon.
Sean
Found a Beta copy of 'Der Blaue Engel' for my collection. In very good shape except for a tracking 'hiccup' in one scene.
Is Absolute Beta still in business? the last site hasn't been updated from 1998BetaLore II is back no new entries but some people have been useing my links page I forgot how many links I have but there's a load of them some that I have yet to see on any of the other pages updated every chance I get! http://uk.geocities.com/betaphile/BetaLoreII.htmlall the old stuff is there for reference wouldn't mind any new websites you e-mail to me or new entries on the chat page. I had the hardest time editing on homestead that's why it was allways out dated. Problem solved when I mooved it they never gave me enough options anyway. Thanks for anything sent to me A. Choate
sleech!! found me some Elcaset tapes on eBay. I wonder if I should buy them and then resell them to you guys? Nah,. that'd make me a snalie. Thats my next quest, an Elcaset deck!!! They should have made one that accepted a full size Umatique tape.. that would have been cool! :P
If we're talking audio anybody still have one of the Radio Shack mini cassette units ours died at least ten years ago. What about the Radioshack DAT recorder that was produced for only about three years I was waiting for the price to go down guess they gave up after me and the other people were waiting for the technology to take hold didn't buy one. I did own a Zenith Stereo with and 8-Track recorder and 78 rpm turntable died after a few years of storage shouldn't have left on the humid floor of our storeroom I guess also had a JC Penny one in the early 80's when I was a kid 8-track tape recorder turtable and no inputs except microphone. The tuner died in it and we eventually got rid of it don't remember why I guess lack of inputs, tuner, and the better stereo my parents allready had. I bought myself an AIWA surrond sound unit a few years ago still working fine took me forever to find a turntable got one at Radio Shack last one for that series kid of pissed when I found a better one Stereo Shop for less a few years later. I rebuilt and 8-track player I scavenged from a broken stereo I found in my shop class needed to buy a preamp for it. I also have some 6J5 triodes I might use to build an amp I hear Tubes are supposedly better than transitors for sound but there was only one short lived pocket radio that used tubes. I also remember an odd fact about the TV that "Where in time is Carmen Santiago" (PBS) got wrong it's from an Electronics Handbook article titled Channel one that wasn't that clearly indicated the color television came before electronic telvision! Electronic television was developed so that you wouldn't need three spinning disks to scan a color image and that was just one of the limitations screen size was another that spurred the devlopment of fully electronic telovition. I could get the exact date of that magazine if you would like. A. Choate.
Hello Andy and Joel,Thanks for all the info on my SL-HF400. I did exchange all the possible parts I can replace with my second unit, but wtill does not PLAT. So can you tell me where the T & S Tape Sesors is? Where can I purchase STK 5441 IC part? Thanks, Jeff
That's a personal record forme jut one message between my first and second now i'm giong for third. But back to business I gave up on my SL-HF450 now that the spindels are broken I could buy a used deck for the money it would cost to repair the one I have that's why I asked about Absolute Beta dosen't seem to be giving any indication of still being in business I would like to buy from there ebay seems to unpredictable for my taste I've allready had a problem with an individual who had a SL-HF950 who couldn't deliver. Last time I order stuff from Canada I'd prefer a seller in the U.S. I've had good luck ordering things from nearby states. A. Choate
To Pepse or anyone else who has an SL-HF750: Does that model have audio/video dub/insert? Some sources I have looked at say it does and some say it doesn't.
Here's a question for someone to hopefully answer. Quite a few years ago,(I think it was about 1991 or 1992) I had a chance to but a Beta Hi-Fiportable VCR from a someone local here in Portland. I remember the unitlooked more like a boombox - rather than the typical portable VCRs that were still around at the time. I'm thinking it was either a Sanyo orToshiba, but can't really remember and was deffinately a one piece unit.If anyone can tell me what model it was, it would be greatly appreciated. I do remeber the unit was featured on the cover of "Video" magazine, whenit was still being published.
Since you folks are talking about old audio gear, I should mention thatthere are a lot of older McIntosh tuners out there; and they blow away most of the current receivers out there for getting a clean signal andsounding just great. In my main stereo system I've got an MR-73 McIntosh(sold from 1969-1971) which I had restored, and the FM stereo is the bestI've heard in many years. If you can find an older model in decent shape, buy one - they're built like a tank and hold their value!
ya, it is a Spamyo.. I saw one on eBay but don't remember the model number.
When a takeup or supply sensor goes bad, it will typically disable thedeck. It will not load a tape correctly. For example, if the supply sensorgoes bad, and you attempt to insert a tape into the VCR it will likelythread around the drum, but the tape loader will fail to work. It will causethe deck to lose its "logic" so to speak. I doubt in your case you have a badtape sensor.
You either have a mechanical jam up of some sort, or there is an electronicfault in the unit. Hard to say at this point, one would have to see the deckfirsthand to troubleshoot.
Andy
How sickening.. I'm about ready to vomit after listening to an hour and a half of non-stereo Beta Hifi. Not complaining.. I could always have only a mono (yuk) beta. Wish I could do something to make that tuner stereo. I've gotten so used to crystal clear sound...
On the subject of mechanical vs. electronic TV coming first actually a crude version of B/W TV based on the nipkow scanning wheel came out first. By the 1920s the rudimentaries of an all electronic TV system were being assembled. The mechanical disc type of color TV didn't come out tillthe late 40s and would've come out but David Sarnoff promised the FCC and all electronic color system in six months "because I told (the boys in the lab) to." so the FCC quashed it...
Olive's first maxim: "the more expensive and difficult to replace componant will always sacrifice itself to save the cheap and easy part from destruction..."
That is from Murphy's law of engineering, #13,A transistor protected by a fast-acting fuse will protect the fuse by blowing first. Woooooopy, I can't wait to find out what tiny component has brough my mighty SLO-1400 to its knees.
Or a Cathode Ray tube will protect that same fuse by blowing first...

Thats not a frankenbeta. I have *the* frankenbeta. A SL-HF500. The videohead assembly was bad so I removed one from a SL-2500, and made it work in the SL-HF500. The front facepanel was damaged (it was dropped on its face), so I used one from a SL-HF300, along with the front control panel assembly. The powersupply module went bad on it, so I removed one from a SL-HF400, and had to modify it slightly (SL-HF500 uses 60hz switch in place of Beta Hifi/off+on) . The front loader was shot, so I replaced it, using one from a SL-HF600. It says "Superbeta HIFI" on it now. Now, this little Silver/Black SL-HF300 has nothing on my SL-HF500. It works great too BTW. I haven't had time to work on the Superbeta enable as of yet BTW, but plan on it. Andy
WOW! andy, that's cool! I remember in grade school I had a pen that made of several other pens, and held together with string, rubber bands and paper clips! We called it "Frankenpen". I wish I were kidding.

Could someone please sell me their mint SL-HF1000 for under $300? My $300 bids on eBay never win these units because of all the snails cornering the market and I should be able to buy one cheap because I think I am entitled to one. Since you all share the same feelings, I'm sure you will want to be consistent with all your other venomous posts and part with your units so as not to have to fall asleep knowing that you are petty, selfish, narrowminded hypocrites. Have a great day. :)
A. Choate, May your HF 450 rest in piece ..er peace. Anyway, before rigor sets in do you have the remote and/or manual for it?? And would you be willing to part with it/them??
David A., WOW, I forgot about McIntosh (for you younger people out the we're not talking computers, LOL). A friend had one he bought in '72 or '73. Yeah, the tuning cans in those units were the best I remember. IMO any quality unit pre '80 with an analog face tuner are better that digital. Oh, and the neat thing about the McIntoshs' was the FM radio guide in the handbook that covered all FM radio stations in the US, with frequecies and call letters. All this talk of old radios and audio decks makes me want to find an old tube type Sansui receiver/amp and a good (like a TEAC) reel to reel and kick back and crank it up and watch the plaster crumble. Now that I think of it I might have a few old reels around.
Proud Beta Owner, Well said man. Shoot I was just going to tell entitled to take his comments and stick them up his A**.

Hi qll. I hope you can help.
I've got a SL-F1 with TT -F1 that's developed two faults that may be related.
Firstly, I can't change tuner channels (in tuner mode) - the number stays the same despite pressing different channel numbers.
Secondly, pressing the eject button causes the eject LED to light for 1 sec but the tape loader doesn't eject. This happens each time I press it.
I hope it's something simple like a fuse or other circuit protection or maybe a break in the connecting cable.
Has anyone seen any behaviour like this before?
Thanks in advance.
Chris
Well, was it ejecting before? Does it make a small whir noise each time you press eject? The small belt that makes it eject may be broken, or the wheel may be jammed. Dun know about the tuner part.. you have to ask Andy.
I don't know if the tuner defect and the ejector defect are one and the same but on the ejector issue...
Have you had occasion to open and service the SL-F1? If on reassembly you've servered the wire leads to the loading motor you would get that effect on pressing eject. If you can hear motor sound on pressing eject it may be that the loading motor belt is gone or slipped.

Stick to prompt repairs and happy customers. By the way that frankenbeta might have been part of the many betamax you never returned SEE >> Back issues beta informer..
Hey - I found this in an essay as to why a man is taking his children back to Mexico to raise them. As you read through it, it will sound increasingly disturbingly familiar. Apparently, the epidemic has spanned the Atlantic as well to the Mother Country. "the USA are breeding the most apathetic men and women in the world. The first reason is education. Students are not encouraged to think by themselves anymore. Now its possible to graduate from college without having to read a single book. American education is also a fertile soil for the development of cliques, often formed by mediocre, insecure people which lack an identity and which find their strength in numbers and take delight in harassing the few intelligent individuals which still are left. People dont endeavor to learn anymore, they endeavor to win popularity contests."
I recently interviewed Andy on the West Coast and here what was said >> CHUCKY: Hello Andy...ANDY: Hello Chuck ... CHUCKIE: have you seen the back issues of the Beta informer...ANDY: I can't read .. CHUCKY: What? .. ANDY: I can't read... CHUCKY: Want me to read the back issues to you?.. ANDY: no PLEASE.. CHUCKY: spill your guts for me please...ANDY: Ok, I am making some new units to send to the people whose units I held back.. Im calling it the Frankinbeta ..My records are very incomplete, don't know who had what, so I fugure I will give them these cobbled units. They contain a little bit of all the units in each one. This way the owners are assured of getting something of their original unit back. My way of saying I'm sorry....CHUCKY: Sounds like a plan. BTW I got a load of STK5441's if you need any. 'By for now.... ANDY: Thanks for you heartfelt interest in helping formerly screwed Beta owners.
The Magnasonic Beta I purchased via ebay arrived today. It appears to be an exact clone of the Sanyo VCR4400 mono toploader. Happily, the deck still works, including play, FF, RW, and pause, so no problem there. Unfortunately the remote did not come with the VCR, so I will have to find a Sanyo remote to test it out. I did find a problem with the machine, namely the on/off power switches are not working properly, so the unit stays "ON" at all time, unless/until I physically unplug the unit; other than that, the VCR appears in good working condition. I am happy to get this very rare model for only 65 dollars, and will very proudly add this unit to my vintage beta VCR collection! Howard
Hi I'm a homosexual pedophile looking for young boys to share bestial sex with. Please contact me.
No kidding! I'm a homosexual pedophile too, who's also into bestiality and necrophilia. I get off on golden showers and bothering Beta chat pages. Let's meet at the Port Authority Bus terminal...
You'll have to wait a bit as I'm still doing a nickel at Rahway. Be out next spring.
To Wayne: Many thanks for the tip about the Sanyo 7300 Beta portable onE-Bay. It looks like a nice unit in decent condition; though I get a realsense (from past E-Bay auctions) that the seller is hoping to get a lot of money for this unit. I posted a high bid - and after placing it was informed that while I had the high bid, it did not yet meet the seller'sreserve price. I'm not sure what they will let this one go for, but since I already have three SuperBetas all in correct working condition,I'm certainly NOT going to break the bank bidding on the 7300.
To Pepse: Many thanks for the nice remarks about the McIntosh tuners. ASI mentioned, I really love the sound my MR-73 produces; not to mentionthe great looking lighted glass faceplate and the machined metal knobs and switches. It's a real work of industrial art and a unit I plan to enjoy for many years. I might also mention that the older Sansui tunersyou mentioned, are also considered to be great for getting good stereoreception. There is a website that is devoted to tuners - I'll try andlook it up - and many of the best rated units are older McIntosh andSansui models.
Sheeeit! I just finished a strech at Rikers! You know Lamont?
maybe if everyone would recount their successful dealings with andy it would discourage these attacks.personally,i am impressed with andy's beta knowledge.since i have correctly repaired my own slh2100 and 750 several times,i am not one who is easily fooled. joel
I just got my SL-HF-900 back from Andy. It works fine. So all you andy-haters can shut up because, whatever his past may be, he's doing good work NOW so all of you guys have something else to mull over other than some back issues of the beta informer. Anyway, Thanks, Andy!!!!
Olive, it looks like you were right, even though they killed off your post. Let's see if their posts get killed or if they stay...
