FREE! FREE! FREE! I have a truckiload of Beta tapes to give away in the west end of the San fernando Valley (L.A.) Somebody spent 25+ years taping off the air and his collection went into storage. The Master list is long since gone and there are only numbers on the tapes. which means that I have NO IDEA what is on them. Since they were only recorded once, they are perfect for recording over. I also have a mountian of VHS. YOU provide the transportation. Drop me a line PLEEEZZZ!!!

Allright, BIs is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. OK, thanks, Andy! everyone who has an SL-HF-900 should have it turbocharged! ANd I've heard the S/FX in BIs are not so good, but, on my machine, they beat Beta IIs! The SL-HF-900 was named VCR of the year when it came out, and it truly deserves the title!

Howdy, I have a question for ya'll regarding the SL-HF750 and the modded SL-HF900. From what I've read, the only 2 major differences are the (more reliable and very cool) linear-skate loading vs. the front loading. Also, the 900 has a jog shuttle wheel while the 750 doesn't. Are there any other differences? Does the 900 have on-screen displays like the 750?

On a side note it sure is great to have a *true* 125ch cable tuner in the 750. What's sad is that my 860D which came out 2 years later only has a lousy 36ch cable tuner in it.

Beef Jerky, No, the HF 900 does not have OSD. Of course un-modded ones didn't have B1s. The HF 900 remote did not have a Jog/Shuttle Wheel. And of course what you mentioned, the HF 900 doesn't have the Linear skate tape tray. The HF 900 did not have locking FF Scan. What I thought was rather interesting is: The 750 had J/S on the remote, but not on the deck, the 900 had the J/S on the deck, not the remote, but the HF 1000 had the J/S on the remote and the deck. Might be a few other things but I don't want to try to find my HF 900 service man and look right now.

Sean, as for the HF 900 on Ebay; remember it is RARE. But then seems to me people think all Betas are rare, and of course they think they're worth alot more than they should be. Also, your link to the Sanyo 7300 tells me you were sleeping when it was mentioned a few posts back. WAKE UP!!! LOL.

Dave A. When you find that Web let me know. I'll get me a plastic cover fer my keyboard so as not to short it with drool. LOL. Seriously tho, I think I'll look at Ebay and see how badly overpriced Macs and 'Suis are. And if you find that site I'll have to try to remember what mod Sansui a friend had lent me and see about that one in particular. Otherwise, to me, just about any '68 to '75 McIntosh would do just great. BTW, do you remember Beaker Street, AKA the mighty 1090 KAAY Little Rock??

I have (2)Sony Super Beta Hi-Fi SL-HF 400 with 2 Remote Controls and Toshiba Beta Hi-Fi V-S443 for SALE. My Sony on one unit has tracking problem, and the other will not play when PLAY button is pushed. It tries but cliks off. Anyone who knows how to repair can probably take one unit as parts and repair the other. The Toshiba needs belt and loading motor. I would like to keep the Toshiba, but since I don't know where to get it fixed or buy parts for it I am willing to part with it. I like to sell all (3) three for $100.00 US Dollars plus shipping. If anyone's interested you can e-mail me at [email protected]. I plan to place the sale on ebay soon, but I prefere to sell to someone here on Betamax Chat Page because I know you all are die hard Beta fan. Thanks.Jeff

Ah, but you can have a 900 modded to BIs ("Turbocharging"), so it becomes the 750's equal, at least. On th eplus side a few 900s were equipped with an RMT-143. YOu can pair any 900 with one, in fact I am soon to be getting an RMT-148 for mine. I think the 900 also has full cable tuning, mine seems to go all the way to 199 channels, althought I never sue that part since I have a cable box and it just stays on "3" or line input.

Okay from what I can tell

SL-HF750: Better loading mech, BIs without mod, OSD, no jog wheel on machine, locking scan

SL-HF900: needs mod for BIs, no OSD, jog wheel on machine, detail switch (what is that?), pseudo a/v insert, better skipscan

Seems for me, they'd both be about equal for me. I have no need for a jog-wheel, I don't do any real editing (no need for a/v insert), and I never used skipscan on any of the beta's I owned so that's of no benefit to me. Though, the digital scan (picture in full-speed FF/Rew) on the SL-HF8xxD's is useful. As others have said BIs is beautiful, truly. I would love to get my hands on an SL-HF1000 or SL-HF2100 and see BI-SHB for myself though!

Sean: I believe the tuner in the 750 and 900 are the same. While, it'll let you enter up to 199 in cable mode, it's really only up to 125 (that's the highest official cable channel). So, 126-199 aren't really channels, what you're seeing is I think just what happens when the tuner's not actually set to a channel, and therefore just random noise.

Sean Meskill
Sunday 22nd September 2002
1:52 am U.K.

[email protected]

I could relly care less aout the tuner, since I have a cable box, and all a VCR ever needs to do for me is tune and put out channel 3, ('cept I should be using 4...) and have ins and outs for good stuff, since my cable box has ins and outs, the RF section of everything is extraneous, and could be replaced easily with another set of ins and outs. I have one VCR set up with its own tuner in use just to have the record-one-while-watching-another option.

The 900, when modded to BIs, is great. The detail switch jus makes it look even better, probably a process similar to VHS-HQ to make any tape better by just a little, but it seems to have more effect that HQ, but from what I've ehard you don't actually have to have all the circuits necesarry for HQ to call a machine HQ, which is why my Pro Sony gives a good picture but the smiling panasonic down stairs doesn't really.

Trick play is special efects... Still, step, slow, reverse play, two times speed (Rare with sound!!!!). The SMiling panasonic has a noticable curve to the bottom of the facia and looks like it's smiling. I think Franny came up with that name...I don't know what skipscan is either but I have a lot of units that have it. Probably something like "betascan" that you can use for years and never know the name of...

Yeah, VAX! DEC's (Digital Equipment Corporation) kick-ass systems. they just stopped making them in '99, right before DEC went under. VAX stood for Virtual Address eXtension and they were great. The first one (The VAX 11/780) set THE benchmark of one VUP (Vax Unit of Processing) which is equal to one MILLION instructions per second. (Of course the latest IBM System/390's are capable of something like 2000 times that figure, but the 11/780 was THE one to beat!) I will be getting one of the smaller, PC-sized ones. Hopefully. jesse,BETA SKIPSCAN-viewing the picture momentarily during fast forward or rewind.press>> or<< during fast forward or rewind mode.when you release the button, the fast forward or rewind mode will resume.the750 actually stops the tape before and after scan, creating a delay in the midst of this otherwise convenient feature.the 400,600,900 and 2100 go directly from ff or rew to scan and the scan speed itself is faster because the pinch roller is not engaged as in the 750.refer to the 750 and 900 OPERATION manual for more details or verification. joel

Skipscan is the feature where if you're rewinding or fast-forwarding the tape, and you want to see where you are quickly but you don't want to just stop and press play. You press and hold down the FF or REW key while the VCR is still rewinding or fast-forwarding (press REW or FF in the same direction as the tape is winding) and it will pit the tape back onthe head and fast scan in the direction you happen to be going in. Release the key and it continues rewinding or fast-forwarding. It's a nifty feature if you want to find something on a tape if you only vaguely know where it is...

Re: HQ processing on that other format. There were six enhancement circuits developed by Faroujda Labs including one to hide original VHS tendencies to outline the right edge of an object in something looking like a thick black marking pen. If the VCR included all six (like Sean's HR-S5500U) it was called "full complement HQ" but most models had only the two principal enhancements so they could use the HQ logo and a "Licenced by Faroudja" sticker on the back. It's worth a visit to http://www.faroudja.com/info/emmyframe.html This brilliant engineer helped create U-Matic and 8mm as well.

BTW I'm still not getting those Nigerian scams nor the klez virus. Klez works by stealing address list from victim 1, user name and IP from victim 2, and sends to victim 1's friends from victim 3's computer using its own SMTP engine. Subject line, message body and nasty attachment names are randomly selected from a built-in list of several phrases, making it harder to spot. Those are just the launch and orbit methods. Re-entry parachute opens by hacking the registry to include a "terminate your_favorite_antivirus_program" command near end of standard startup routine. That way, after you see the antivirus program open, it just quits so klez can open evil WINK*.EXE files and get down to it while you think you are still protected. The final detonation is on the 6th (or 12th?) of even numbered months when your precious data gets randomized while keeping proper filenames and sizes. See more. Feel sick.

A good way to detect if you've been virused is to put a fake address in the first entry or two your address book that you know will get MAILER DAEMON'd back to you if it were sent out...

an entry such as [email protected]

that way when a virus tries to replicate itself through your address book you'll get a warning to start running your antivirus proggy...

Or you could just get a Mac. There aren't enough around for anyone to want to bother with crafting viruses for them...

Re: Klez and other worm viruses. Yes, Franny's Mac would be a safe solution for some. The best false address to put in your Windows Address Book contains all zeroes. 000000@000000 will be sent first because Bill Gates designed your WAB to function alphabetically by default. That address will become the first one attacked by a virus that uses your WAB. If first address is unsendable, any cc's will not make their destination. Also if you are using Outlook Express click View...Layout... and make sure Preview Pane option is unchecked. That way suspicious emails are not opened by the preview function before you can delete them.

If UPS and FedEx merged would they be "fedUp"??? Let's not even think about a few of the airlines, for instance Continental and Air Lingus... I think there was an aircraft amker who had siilar troubles, they ended up "Ling-temco-chance/vaught" and people called them "Vaught"... I'm not sure of any of thsoes spellings, though.

I was thinking if you cross Sony & Pioneer, you get "Soneer." Now what do you get if you cross an HF900 & VX-90? Identical Twins?

I wonder why the ß works with the keypad but not with the numbers along the top of the keyboard? I have a question...does replacing the rubber components (idler tire, belts and PR) of a VCR require any special tools? (Andy S., you might know this)My Sanyo 4650 and my NEC N901BU are showing signs of worn rubber parts (the 4650 crawls in FF mode and the N901BU crawls in Rew mode, both run at about the same speed as normal play mode)and I'm thinking of ordering the parts from Studio Sound Electronics and trying my hand at VCR repair. In other news, yesterday I recieved a visit from some relatives I have not seen for a long time (my mom's aunt, her husband, their daughter and her husband) and when they learned I collect ßetamax they were only too happy to offer me their old ßetamax (geez I love that symbol!) and collection of Beta tapes! They're not sure what model it is, they described it as having a stereo output but no stereo function. Maybe they were describing one of the HFR models, I'll let everyone know once I get it. They say it needs work, that it has a cassette stuck inside it and the tape door flap is broken off. (Their child tried to force it to open outward, still more proof that little kids and VCRs don't mix. My parents say when I was little I sent our HF600 to the repair shop by inserting and ejecting a cassette dozens of times in a row)

Wassamatta, Sean... don't like a challenge? :)

Try rewinding an IF can in a solid state radio sometime. Or, if you want a real challenge for restringing a dial, try a Grundig radio.. almost any of their multibanders will do... :)

Well, the sombitch IS a multiband, as many Boom Box type radios are. It needs a propper radio antenna, the one I stuck on it is from Who knows what. It has two cassette drives, both are as dead as sh*t. One has a broken belt, and the other is the more typical kind, missing it's door, buttons, and functionality. I plan on fixing the one wiht the broken belt, the other I really don't care about. It also has inputs for a phono, Aux, and microphone, and outputs, etc. It is rather rare, from a firm called Lasonic.

Well... take the day off to visit grandmother and a ton of juicy posts come up...

dreaming of the perfect §etamax (how come all your '§'s look like 'ß'? I assume you're trying to make the Beta symbol) How about an SL-HF1ME - the SL-F1 /SL-2000 returned as a 4 head multi-system HiBand HiFi with insert A/V editing and PCM encoding coupled with the tuner/tuner module that gets all the channels even satellite? One can dream....

To change the belts on a Sanyo only requires a few screwdrivers and maybe pliers to reattach the idler shaft clip.

Olive, everybody's beta symbol looks good at this end except yours, which looks like the interlocking s symbol on a Warsteiner beer logo (empty the bottle three times, then examine logo again). Could be interesting at super high band §1ß, or is that ß1§. I just copy and paste the symbols as I need them from a previous post.

Re: Bird vocabulary. A friend who is still living with her 65-year old mother has a budgie who uses phrases he hears the mother say. So of course when the repair man came to her place he had to endure the bird repeating over and over "You're doing it all wrong!" It was suggested they put newspaper grocery ads featuring cut-up fowl in the bottom of his cage.

SL-F1 and TTF-1 problem updated.

Thanks for your replies - the plot has thickened slightly.

The TT -F1 is still misbehaving as said but I'm not too bothered about that as long as it powers the SL-F1.

On first power on, the eject light comes on and there is a slight clonk but the eject does not occur. I wait 30 mins with the unit powered and then the eject does happen! I load a tape, press play or FF or REW and after a few promising seconds is then stops. I can pause OK with good colour freeze and even briefly picture search. If I search for too long it stops again.

I then wait 2 hours with the unit powered on and EVERYTHING comes good!!

I know WE all need a few hours to come around after waking up but.....

Any ideas?

Note that I have only recently aquired this unit and don't know its history.

Many thanks

Chris

Olive: I checked that auction for the loader, then I checked current pricing on SonysParts Support website. I grabbed the p/n of the loader for the 9500 , plunked it in Sonyparts support , and whala- the grand total for a brand new front loader assembly is $59.82 . Hmm.. Lets see should I buy Wag's for $75? Or get the actual for real new part? Andy

To Pepse: Thanks for the nice remarks about the vintage tuners. As I'vementioned, I really love the sound of my McIntosh MR-73. I don't thinkmost people really know how good FM stereo can sound until they get a decent tuner with a well set-up antenna system. It can be pretty spectacular, especially if they are listening to one of the remainingindependent radio stations that don't compress their audio signal. Bythe way, that information website for vinatge FM tuners isWWW.Geocities.com/Tunerinfo/

To Olive: I deffinately agree with you that E-Bay should have some sortof system where auctions with reserves are "flagged". I still have thehigh bid on the Sanyo 7300 - but of course, the auction doesn't end untilfriday. Cheers!

ugh, yes... Especially when Kleer Channel owns every radio station in the US, I can't tell which is which anymore.. We went to Houston and I swear I thought I was at home.. Ugh! SAME tired playlists,,,, SAME boring songs. Why just play the "hits" of the 80s? Play all the songs from the 80s! And who says they're hits, anyway!? Now.. I have a question to ask Sean. Was it one of those HUGE lasonics that have the tape deck where you put it in like a car radio? (sideways) [tape] not [o-----o] (write protect tabs "o")

Well I got that PCM2500B today tired hooking it up to a CD player and one of my Betas and...

nothing

no indication whatsoever as whether I even had it hooked up right. Sony, endeavouring to be as inscrutable as possible give no indication even to how to configure it so that you know which switches to throw or even hear the line in/outs. A little green light next to the power button did light up.

For example the RCA in/outs are only numbered from 1 to 4 no IN L/R or OUT L/R

he switches up front are no help

A 'DIO' (Digital In/Out?) switch that doesn't seem to handle all the inputs available in the back

Emphasisis On/Off Master Safe On/Off wha.. what?

Copy Prohibit Write/Off Ri-i-ight... So if I turn it to 'Write' I can or can't prohitbit copying?

Sampling frequency 44.1Khz/48khz I think I can figure that...

It's for sale if anyone thinks they can read Sonyspeak...

You'll need XLR connectors and BNCs for a bunch of the mystery plugs in the back that may be hiding the PCM goodies in this....

Why couldn't I find a cheap working PCM -F1? They seem like they can be understood by humans...
