I don't know if I'm in the right place, but here goes: I own a Sanyo "Betacord" VCR, together with about 300 Beta movies that I bought from a local video rental place. Does anybody know where I can buy one of those cassettes head cleaner devices for my Beta? If not, where can I send it to be cleaned? The local VCR repair guys won"t touch it. Thanks to anybody who can help. Steve Carmick
Looks like MrBetamax's secret selling ID has been revealed...
Just listed this SL-HF 750 remote for $125 start/ $145 BIN under the ID [email protected] (who very seldom actually bids for anything)...

The general consensus is that tape type head cleaners are really bad for video head and that you should use a foam padded swab (not cotton) dipped in alcohol to clean heads. Otherwise E-bay has tape cleaner cassettes listed amongst their Beta goodies. Use at your own risk as ta lot are probably around15/20 years old.
If you have a beta tape that's no longer anygood/eaten by the machine you can go out and buy a VHS head cleaner tape, break it open and respool it onto the beta reels. Or look to broadcast supply places that sell Betacam head cleaning tapes. Good place to get rewinders too.
If you have lots of space, "rewinder" is a good use for an older VCR that has no useful heads or some problem with its video path. the Sanyos would probably be good for this since they don't thread the tape until it is to be played, so a little bit of wear on the tape is saved.

You are wrong about your lled/mrbetamax theory. Furthermore, if I recall correctly, it was this same petty busybody routine of yours and others that led to this board getting shut down recently.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
Disclosure of E-bay dealers with 'secret' buying/selling identities would seem to be legetimate information for a prospective user of E-bay (to acquire Betas) to know. If enough people knew enough to avoid paying 'dealer prices' the better. It's hard enough to be decenmt Beta equipment without competing with well funded speculators who see Betas as merely another 'collector's item' to be exploited for all they're money extraction ability. Big business routinely collects and trade even the most personal of information about us. It's more than fair that we should turn the table on them.
Besides it's not amongst the 'no nos' in the chatpage guidelines...
Too true Olive. I agree, Iam not one to hold up bussiness practices but I believe that everyone should also have a fair shot to take similar pokes at the company. Furthermore, it's good that there are guidelines, I suppose that we must take the good with the bad, it makes it clear when people are actually doing something repremabdable or if someone has just decided he doesn't like the people on this page...
In other news, I got the hardshell case for the SL-2000. Since I've seen a few up on Ebay I thought that some info about it would be appreciated in case anyone is considering one. They are very well made, and rainproofed. The cables even exit through gaskets. It is difficult, however to use an adapter to fit a non-K-plug camera to it. I'm not sure that is by design or just happened that way. Also, it really minimizes the weight and would probably be a good choice for anyone with a back problem for whom have the recorder hang off of just one shoulder would be uncomfortable. it has a belt strap, too.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
I've got the 'Fotima' backpack carrier for my SL-2000. Has holes to let you clip on the Sony straps and straps to let you backpack it. I would imagine one of the disadvantages to the shell carrier is that you can't work the controls once closed. Isn't it (the shell carrier) also supposed to be usable for underwater videography? Not that anyone would want to risk trying...
I'm not sure, Olive, it looks pretty watertight but not perfectly so. I think there was a seperate assembly for such purposes, and I'm sure Franny can show you pictures of it. I personally wouldn't try it. it sure beat a trash bag in the rain, however. I think you could also mount some kind of "Steadycam" affair onto it through two holes on the right upper corner.

THis is so atypical of Sanyo design I was wondering if it might be a Sony or other OEM...

Sanyo 'VCR3'
Even Ray Glasser only knew it as "The Sanyo Betacord"...
Hi All! - Really glad to see this page up and running again. A few days ago, a client ofmine gave me an old Sanyo 4000 top loading Beta VCR and a box of Beta tapes. Apparently, her family was the original owner of this machine. I have been checking thisunit out for correct operation. What I especially like, is that unlike most older Betamachines this one is in really nice condition. All doors and panels are in place,, the clock has a clear, bright blue display, and all buttons and knobs seem to work correctly. And except for a few minor scuff marks; the entire case is in excellent shape. So farI've played some Beta tapes recorded on other machines; and except for adjusting thetracking - the picture and audio are surprisingly good. So this "oldie" is deffinatelynot of the "junker" variety.
That Sanyo almost looks like an NEC beta machine. I had an NEC Hifi machine that had a similar drop-down control section like the one shown in the picture.
Obviously, this interpretation is open to interpretation.
Hey, can I use an L-750 in sn SLO-340? I remember hearing of trouble in decks not equipped for B-III...
Sean
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
On that VCR-3...
note that Sony style see-thru window over the cassette well and the better-than-Sanyo's usual construction in the back (large heat sink grill). Looks almost like it's an all-metal construction. Sanyo liked to make their Betas with as much plastic as practicable...
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
The only tapes with 'issues' with BI are the L-830 and L-1000 tapes. L-750s should be usable on the SLO-340.
WEll then mine has other issues. A friend of mine can help, though. probably just minor problems, however.
Sean
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
Your SLO-340 needs tharapy? How sad...
Yes, but I am pretty sure it is just the CAP FREE speed needing adjustment. You know, rhythmic pulses in the picture, poor interchange... But I got a battery that works!
Sean
Nothing like a 'Texas Walkman' is there....
Not at all. I wonder if I would pass as as Snail with the Betamax Backpack on...

SLP-400R SuperBeta player-only VCP
re: Left channel LEDs all the way on (HF750). A. Choate, thanks for the tip. I tried that and those slider pots are working properly. I've got another beta that just developed a weird problem. When you push play it goes into Fast forward and eats the tape. I have to power off to get it to stop. Has anyone out there had this problem with theirs?
I will be going to canada again. will they have flea markets in the winter season?:D
Olive: What are the "issues" associated w/ using L-830's on ßI(s)? I notice some of the Sony L-830 cases have an "N/A" under it, but I've used them that way w/o any problems (on the HF750 or 1000). They're good for roughly 1h 40m. Any length greater I've had to roll myself, but same as above.
2nd: That "General" multi beta looks kinda weird. The only close note I see is that it requires a PAL TV. I could prolly use it since mine's multisync (NTSC/PAL), but don't have any foreign cassettes.
I have several sources for Beta stuff on my webpage links but you have to use the main address http://uk.geocities.com/betaphile/BetaLoreII.html divided into three catagories ,Beta webpages,Beta resources, and Video history can find what you're looking for there. If there is anything you would like to add/see e-mail me. A. Choate
Well I could use any VCR since my video card in my PC can accept any TV standard accept maybe the old English 405-line system but you don't see that around often. But again, I don't have any tapes to make it worth my time. I did bid (And get thompped) on an EDW-30F but that VCR usually goes for way more than it is worth, IMHO.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
L-830s and L-1000s are considered too thin to be safe to use on the faster B-I speed. Supposedly more liable to stretching or breaking.
As far as I understand it, Olive, the L-830 is safe for the BIs of the 750, the Turbocharged 900, the 1000 and the 2100 as well as the BMC-1000K, but not the old B-I speed machines that had no B-III capacity. The L-1000 is supposedly "Unsafe at any Speed" (But I hate ralph naded, I just had to make that joke).

Stupididty has reached the greatest hight since mass stupidity struck the entire population and made 90% of them choose VHS!
Awright.... :)
Who remembers the ßeta I VCR that I won about two months ago on fleabay?? Well, I finally got it today.. :) It's an SLO-323, not a model number I was familiar with. Has linear stereo sound, variable speed playback, and freeze frame that's next to perfect. I tried one of my ß1s tapes in it to start with, but needless to say, it was severely overdriven, and out of band. So, I got my DVD player, hooked it up to the machine, popped in a tape, and did a test recording.. THIS THING IS FAN-DAMN-TASTIC!! I cannot tell the tape from the DVD on this machine, even at standard ß1 speed... (course, the sound is nowhere near as good as a ßeta Hi-Fi deck).. I'm a genuinely happy camper.. :) This is great for recording old TV shows and such, and I can even make Olive a ß1 linear stereo tape of Videodrome.. (someday I hope to get my 1000 recording again..)
*doing the Snoopy dance*
BTW... anyone got a (wire) remote for one of these things???
What's wrong with your 1000? Anyway, I have a remote that might work, but since it doesn't work with my SLO-1400 I wouldn't bet on it, I'm pretty sure it's for a U-matic. And I need it for a Umatic. Anyway, look on Ebay for it.
Sean
Need Help! I have a Sony SL-HF400 which seems to be working properly with tape handling, but not getting any video output other than a wavey pattern. There are no longer any repair shops in this area that will attempt to work on a beta vcr so I'm making an attempt to fix it myself. I have quite a few tapes to convert to the vhs format even though I like the bta quality.
Did you clean the heads? Are you sure the tapes are good? do you get audio? LInear or stereo audio? And, did you adjust the tracing? Try all that first.
Who remembers that CCD-TRV87 I won about six weeks ago on Ebay? Well that one arrived today. It was new in box as advertised, and came with an external battery charger and 2X telephoto adaptor. :)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1940307004
Have we ever seen one of these before? I think not! it's pretty obvious what the base chassis is, but why they made it a top loader is beyond me!!! WEll, it was Zenith who had one machine fixed at B-III although it had been capable of BII recordings!
Sean
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
I think I'd posted about one of them sometime last year....
I think....
Might be a posting in the Betamax Videographer or some other chatpage. Funny you never see the Sony OEM version up for bid (SL-8500).
Does anyone know why it was made a top-loader? To be inexpensive?
Perhaps that was a transitional model - Sony had yet to come up with a frontload design or this was a toploader design that Sony then modified to be a front loader. Or perhaps it's a reverse of the VPR-9800 story in that Sony had a load of unsold SL-8500 so they offered them to Zenith.
Ray Glasser's Betapage has been moved!
It's now at... http://www.betainfoguide.com/index.html
Sono italiano. Provate a vedere il sito di Sony Betamax giapponese: http://www.betamax.to in cui tutti i cataloghi, posters, links e l'assistenza riparazione. E' bellissimo sito giapponese del mondo! Ho possesso 2 videoregistratori Sony Betamax SL-C33E e Beta Hi-Fi SL-HF100EC. Ciao a tutti.
Can anyone help me? I am looking to purchase a Betamax player for UK betamax tapes - it's such a shame that all my early 80's tapes are gathering dust in the loft. Hope someone can help me.
John
I prefer some top loaders rather than front as front loaders tears the tape ribbon when the ribbon is caught in the vcr.. With top loaders sometimes it lifts off...
Hey guys! I gotta question for ya. I'm dismayed to notice that the RatShack discontinued those VHS/Beta relabelling kits (44-1103)! I went to all the local stores a bit back and bought up all they had left. Now I need a ton more and can't find any. Anyone know of a place (online?) that sells a similar item? They were good for a load of Sony K-series betacams (look like ordinary "old-style" betamax tapes) I used 'em on; now I got a hoard of 3M betacams coming in the same style. I've bought labels from places like http://www.professionallabel.com for the 1/3-window tapes (like the Sony "G's"). But need regular-sized face labels.
Have you tried to navigate Radio Shack's website to find them? If you have the R/S part number, you should be able to enter that into the search box and find them.
www.radioshack.com
____@_*v* No wonder I can't find any at my local Rat Shack....
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
No more Shack labels? Damn! I was starting to get low...
Avery makes labels for a living, not a side item. Try this link for starters. These fit the other format, but with a bit of digging maybe they have another product just right for the best format.

Anyone following the saga of my SLO-340 will be glad to hear that it is fine, but rather its camera is not well. The AVC-3450 seems to produce a white ring around the image and it won't come into focus. I have other cameras, however.
Got it to work by taking the handle off the bad camera and putting it on the good one. Had another AVC-3450.
Yeah, bummer on the labels. The "RatShack Online" comes up w/ squat when you search for "44-1103." A call to the local store ("You've Got questions; We've Got Phone-Breathing") and the guy finally tells me they killed 'em! GAAH!!
Maybe try floppy disk labels??
Hi All,
I want to capture some old beta videos and transfer then to VCD. It looks like Ican use my Hauppauge TV card to capture the video and then transfer theresultant file via Nero to CD.
Problem is the software with the card is awful, is there any better (functionality wise and free) software I can use to capture the video??
Thanks in advance.
bill
Bill,You want to go to http://www.vcdhelp.com. This page will tell you everything you need to know. I personally use VirtualDub to capture and TmpegEnc to create a VCD compliant mpeg. Then Nero to burn. That page has tutorials and how-to's, and is great. I make a ton of VCD's complete with menus and everything, and that page is were I started.
- Jay
I tend to agree. I've made VCDs & SVCDs from beta cassettes for friends who *didn't* want VHS. And VCD Help was where I went to, also. Even got all FREE software to do it. You'll need to hook your beta deck up to your TV card's and soundcard's repective inputs. Then dupe to your hard disk in real time (V-Dub works). Encoding the mpeg can take a lot of time (hours!), however, depending on how fast your PC is.
2nd: Brenda's idea of 3½" floppy labels doesn't sound like a bad idea for beta face's. And the RatShack does a have a good set to use. Now just need a good substitute for the spine labels and we're all set!
I bought that SL-F1 that was for sale on Ebay and just received it. It is in good condition with a good picture but the audio is terrible, it has a very loud 50hz buzz and very low level. It is only during tape playback, when using the tuner it is fine. My initial though was to clean the audio heads but that had little effect. Any other ideas?
And how do you get to the heads? Any instructions how to open this machine?
Roderick
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
About that SL-F1 with audio problems. There are playback level and bias pots on the side PC board (at least that's where they are in the SL-2000). Given you know the exact frequency of the noise coming out of it you should probably be able to find the right settings.
Opening the SL-2000/ F1 is just a matter of removing the two screws on the back (the side where the RF port is) and sliding it out, up and away (you'll have to unplug the the connection to the battery bin). You should also remove the tape carraige lid so you can better access the audio heads. You may have to adjust the audio head azimuth and or height as well.
Yes, remove the basket lid before tkaing the case off. I've found that a lot of VCR cases, especially on portables, need lots of jiggling before they come off. if it looksl ike it should, keep at, it, it will. Otherwise looks for more screws.
Hi All: To Roderick. Dont open yours slf1 and tray to Adjustment the sound Bias or the Audio head Azimuth Adjustment. First look at the tape path close to the pinch roller, capstan shaft, audio head, and then im sure you see a bad tape path in the guide close to the pinch roller and the audio head, typical there are upper or lover curl on this guide. If there are a curl? simply replay the pinch roller.I have repaiert many of this SL-F1 (711P Chassis) and never make a Electrical Adjustment for the sound but replay lot ofpinch roller yes almost on everyone. A hint when you close yours SL-F1 for finis job first put the case on the unit and then the bottom.good luck Regards Jan H.Pedersen
Re: SL-F1 Well, the 50hz hum also sounds like possibly electrical interference or a grounding problem since the electricity over there is 50hz. Does it do this on the battery too? If it only does it on AC power that would definitly be some sort of interference or grounding problem or a bad power supply. If it does it on both battery and AC then check the tape path, the ACE head may be out of alignment, or other tape guides.
I would check for proximity to AC sources of the PB head.. it could be picking up 50Hz EM field from a transformer somewhere nearby, and only be heard on playback.
Alternatively, the audio PB head could have a broken ground wire on or to it.
Firstly, I like the new idea about registering - it's really simple and hopefully means the page will stay alive and spam free.
To the point: The F1 with the 50Hz buzz. Firstly, don't go messing with the presets or the guides. I learnt a long long time ago that the reason the manufacturers put paint in screws is to stop you turning them! The only time you need to mess with guides is when you buy a machine that someone else has screwed about with. And the only time to mes with presets is when you have a service manual and a decent oscilliscope!
It's not going to be down to the mains, because both the TT -F1 and the ACP -F1 use switched mode power supplies, which first rectify and smooth the 240V AC to about 385V DC.
I'd go with either Jan Pedersons assumptions on tape snagging - caused by uneven wear on the pinch roller and making the tape slide up and curl over the guide posts. When the ACE head reads the video signal it creates a drumming noise [and obviously audio will be low or no existant] - thing is, it can't be moving up too much otherwise you would lose the CTRL track and like all sonys, the screen would blank out.
It's possible that a screen or a single wire could be off the head, but maybe the machine has suffered some physical shock and there are some dry joints on the PCB connector.
Good Luck!
Hi, I am a college student and I am trying to get info on the betamax machine. Can someone help?
WEll, Robert, as a fellow College studnet I'm glad to help but I need to know what you need. Are you studying the theory of the machine, the rise and fall of Betamax as a consumer product, or do you actually want one to use? Furthermore it is important to know where you are geographically, i.e. the UK, Japan, the US, Europe, or the Middle East because several different models were released in each region and TV standards are not always compatible.
Thank you for your help in advance. I am writing a paper on the rise and fall of the Betamax machine here in the US. From what i understand is that it never "took off" like it has/had over seas.

He has 2 Classic cars to support so don't quote prices from me! So that might be a good buy because it seems to be in good shape otherwis.
erf.... heard from a friend that says he may have a spare 2000-mie. LOL.. *sigh. I've tried to make VCDs but failed with the menu thingy.. :(
Hi - I have an SL-F1E which is showing it's age.The rewind stops and startsvery jerkily when it does get going. There is also "snow" on screen whichisn't resolved by "tracking". Is there anybody in Australia that fixes Betamachines as I'm not technically adept and I'd love to transfer my tapes toanother medium. It's a great old friend and I also have the HVC-4000P camera that goes with it.
rgds Clive
To Clive - It sounds like the head drum has been worn so smooth and also the heads are wearing out. There was discussion that roughing up the upper head drum with an emory cloth or very fine grit sandpaper would solve the jerky rewinding problem. If you could find them, there might still be head discs for your VCR. It would be well worth trying to save as I really can't think of any finer VCR overall than the SL-F1.

Hello! Last night I re-hooked up the Beta (a Sanyo Hi-Fi model 7150 NTSC). We had just re-situated all the audio/video boxes in our family room. We usually don't record to it, but I hooked up the DirecTV to it, and the recording was great! I even recorded some music from the audio channels, and the playback sounded awesome! Does SuperVHS still record audio at 150 Hz bandwidth? We had previously recorded a lot of music from the dish in that format.
The initial Beta TV/VCR combo sold in the U.S.

Mike: Is that a beta deck you had sitting around for awhile unused? If that's the case, welcome back [ :) ]. I record from DirectTV, myself, on beta and it's outstanding. Although I seldomly use my betas for audio-only, I have done it. The audio is near-CD quality w/ 80dB (or so) singnal-to-noise. Not too shabby!
Anyone else having trouble getting into the ßetaLoreII chatpage? I get a 403 notice "forbidden"
I also got a "permission denied" message when I tried to get on the Betalore site. Glad to see it isn't only me. I wrote to Antares Choate asking if he knows anything about it.
Maybe the snails have clogged up the server, or some baby snalie was playing around where it shouldn't on the Nixdorf server's settings. Oh well. Grr! Anyone got a spare 2000-2002 Mazda Millenia lying around? Check.. Under the couch, maybe? Or how about behind your Betas? Maybe the u-Matic had one for lunch? Eep. My friend's dad said no, that the 2000-mie wasn't for sale. Darn! And I need to know how to adjust convergence on my 1976 Trinitron... It's WAY off. Plus, I need a remote for my Yamaha DSP-1.
But where will the snailies be able to sleech free now that the Betalore chatpage is lost in 403-land?
Well I hope my post is not removed for saying this but we could start a boycot of this page unless ASCII art is approved... Anyway, for refference, the SLO-340 will only take Sony Black and White cameras, not other brand names, they cannot sync to it.
The only ones boycotting the page would hurt would be us. Period. Nobody else would care. I doubt it was the snailies that happened to the ßetalore site, since A. Choate already said he had no problem with them. What more than likely has happened is some sort of DDoS attack or other problem of that ilk.
I get the same 403 message when trying to get to the ßetalore II chatpage.
I've a SL F1UB tuner and VCR and had a camera up to 10 years ago. For sentimental reasons, I want to use a Betamx camera again. Has anyone a camera for sale, or could you point me in the right direction. Just arrived - good site.

Just finished watching a Beta copy of Superman that must've been released a few years after the movie. It's amazing how badly recorded the first generation of movies on video were. They must've used a tube camera to record from the film because it's sort of washed out looking (I have an early copy of Clockwork Orange that's in as bad a shape) and in some scences you can see a shadow in the corner like it was part of the lens or whatever equipment they used to transfer the film to the master tape. Not only that but in a few scenes they forget to pan and scan to the person talking (like when a TV reporter is at the scene when Lois Lane is caught by the man of steel after falling out of a helicopter - you hear her but you don't see her).
Like a lot of old videotapes the first few feet of tape are in bad shape (the part that takes most of the strain of loading tends to go bad first) but the rest of the movie was in OK shape. The end credits were truncated by Warners for the tape and a few scenes I remember from HBO broadcasts of the movie at that time were cut out. (I can clearly recall poor Miss Tessmacher almost being fed to sharks by Lex Luthor and getting rescued at the end of the movie.)
Of course, JVC must've been pleased that it's product placement scenes are intact. I always did wonder what Kryptonite was used for...
Used beta tapes (large quantity) contain films from UKTV. Buyer collects. Offers. London E4 Area.
I have a beta tape on basketball skills and am in need of a player or player-recorder just for this tape . Could someone sell me one or inform me as to where I could locate a beta machine?
someone just emailed me about the new fangled betas....
yep.. sony just released one with 2002 styling that can also play betacam tapes too. It even comes with the beta-vhs adaptor! ;) Anyone willing to tell me how to adjust convergence on that 1776 Trinitron? oops I meant 1976.
Bah!
Just go to Consumer Electronics, Home Audio and Video, VCR's, and type "beta" in the search block. You'll get a whole list of beta machines up for bid.

Olive: Were you referring to the early Superman, recorded in mono, that comes in one of those huge WB clamshells? I've got that same one, and yes, I've seen some of those defects you mentioned. Haven't been able to find a newer hifi copy so I made one from the DVD. Oops, nevermind, I didn't say that! :)~
But seriously, some of the early tapes in my collection, are, surprisingly, in pretty damn good shape for 20+-year-old copies. Particularly some of those from Magnetic Video! I can see that some of them are REALLY old seeing how they how the "old" Betamax logo on the flip-door that covers the tape. The "ß[]" one. And some of these I think are still out-of-print.
No one wants to help me re-converge my 1776 Trinitron? It's the perfect match for my 2000-mie!
