Yikes! $125 for an SL-2415. The bid history shows a jump from $55 to $125 so the poor sap who won this was clearly bidding against the reserve. I wonder if he thought "I'll bid a high price but there's now way the reserve will rise to meet it..."

If it's NIB oe close to it it's probably worth it. Not bad for a NEW VCR. and a talker. That't the outside for one of that caliber in that condition. In lesser shape the price drops sharply.

Jesse, what is it that is wrong with the ABC version of The Shining ?? The version I saw on TV was only missing one part where the Danny's doctor talks with Wendy, which scene while being very relevant in the book has nothing to do with the movie. I ultimately bought the DVD version of this excellent movie. IMHO the best movie from a Stephen King novel.

Here's one for everyone. What's the preferred recording source of people who thinks analog has more overall qualities than digital ??

jesse, i find the most reliable way of dubbing dvd's is using a sima model scc color corrector.not only does it defeat dvd macrovision,it features controls for tint, color, sharpness, brightness, contrast, blue, green and red for a little over $100.

Very new here - and reading with interest - question: what's the Snail? There must be a juicy story here. I've been looking on ebay and am very confused - don't know if I should be hunting for a SL-HF750 or 900 or what........my (don't laugh) SL-5600 just started eating my tapes and the one most important is of my mom a few weeks before she died. Never got around to copying it on another format. Hello to all.......be kind.

The Snail is this fellow on E-bay named Snaling who buys up all the HiFi §etas he can so as to create a shortage. He then resells them at ridiculously high prices - because he can....

"he-snailies want to be him... she-snailies want to be with him! He's The International Snail of Mystery!"....

If the videoheads aren't worn to nubs on that Sl-5600 (a pretty good §eta for it's era I am told) you might be able to curtail it's nibbliness by cleaning or replacing some of the tires and /or belts. Often just sanding the surface crust off the idler tires and idler post will do the trick.

The older pre-1982/3 §etas used a lot of rubber bits in them. After then Sony miniaturised their flagship models to the point that the only rubber bits were on the ejector mechanism and the pinch roller.

Even better than the color/timebase corrector you talked about is the Daewoo 5800 DVD player available for about $160 from an outfit called 220-electronics.com. It has hardware defeat of all Myecchrovision, and will play discs from any region. And can be set to output in NTSC or PAL. Truly a player for all seasons. I get flawless backups of my discs from it.

Hello I was wondering if I could ask a question about my Sanyo VCR 7200B. I just bought it used, when you eject the tape it does not roll back into the cassette. It does not appear to be getting stuck on anything, however it appears that it is simply not being wound into the tape. I pressed on the tape sensor to fool the vcr into thinking there was a tape in it, when I hit eject I could see the wheels turning as if it were rolling in a tape. Any help you might be able to give would be greatly appreciated.

yuck! never had a Spamyo that worked rite. Yes, it will twirl the reel drivers but not spin them strong enough to reel loose tape back in. Most likely that idiotic little belt it has under its idler has gone bad, just like the tyre. Replace 'em both; this has fixxed a couple Spamyos I had that did that. Right after I replace idler they both died...... GE luck!

Couldn't build some "Nixdorf" Betas could ya? ;)

But seriously folks: Brenda, yeah, Daewoo does make some nice DVD players. I have a 3000 myself and it's a stylish little thing. They're all region-/macro-free or easy to hack to do so. Generally most betas are macro-immune, I think, but there's been a few differing opinions over different models. Who was it awhile back that mentioned that the HF1000 put red lines in the picture from a DVD dupe? I tried it myself w/ a Playstation 2 and got the same. I would also agree that I'd rather kill the macrovision at the source rather than putting anything else inline to further manipulate the video signal after it leaves the player. I also use a set of high-quality gold A/V cables for best possible transfer. Never been disappointed. :)

I have been reading here, and only felt compelled to post as of now. I own 5 Sanyo Beta VCRS. They all have been rock solid performers, and absolutely reliable too. All have required service, but only for things that are normal wear and tear (belts). I own 2 Sanyo VCR-7250's, a VCR-7200, A VCR-7300, and VCR-7150. All are Beta HIFI VCRs, the 7250's are Superbeta HIFI and I must say they perform as well as my Sony Superbeta units , especially the Sanyo 7250's. I don't see where you are coming from , it sounds like you have no experience with the Sanyo units and just some dud units. I have owned these machines since new and all have been great working units. Take care, don't listen to what others say about Sanyo Betacords. Leonard.

Loenard: I can't really say anything bad about the Sanyos as of now. Prior, I didn't have an opinion one way or the other since I never owned any till recently. The first is a VCR7250 I acquired cheap a few months back that had loading troubles. Replaced the belts & tires and now it works fine; even records well.

The second deck is a VCR7300! And I gotta say that I really love that one. It looks too much like one of those older boomboxes w/ deteachable speakers; only w/o them. Is it supposed to just sit vertically? Cuz that's how mine's sitting now on the TV. and it's all self-contained, whatwith having the tuner built-in and all.

3rd is a VCR4400 is picked up at the Goodwill about a week back. It's not hifi, but it was cheap and I never had a non-portable top-loader in my collection, so I snagged it. Works fine, also, and came w/ the corded remote.

Two SL2700/AG500 combos for the price of one?? I would think the latter would also fit the SL2710, with it having a jack on the rear for it. Now I could just picture a DVD changer w/ four or five disks in it hooked up to the 2710 and a pile of blank tapes loaded in the AG500. No muss, no fuss for successive duping?

Another view on Sanyos. I chose Beta for picture quality but I chose my first top load Sanyo VCR4000 because of price. I paid only half as much as the equivalent basic Sony, but it was a floor model. Next a Sanyo front load VCR4030, $150 US, last one Woolco had. Just quit threading a few weeks ago so getting rubber from iglou.com to see what happens. Looks easy enough if it works. I used to fix Sanyo mini-cassette dictating equipment and found them to be much less expensive than Sony, but easier to repair.

At least every Beta I can think of was made in Japan. Country of origin is at least as important as brand name. When any reputable manufacturer starts to ship a product labelled "made in third world", watch out. The primary focus of that product is now cost, not quality. If they aim for cheapest labour you can be sure they stick cheapest components inside too. Third world employees work at least as hard but garbage parts in = garbage product out. Perhaps in the end Sony chose to kill beta altogether rather than to a BeThaiMax when the accounting became an issue.

The problem is that I did not get such a recorder together with teh camera. And nobody knows where the recorder might be today. Therefore I ask if an of you people know if it´s possible to connect it to a VHS-recorder. There is a Sony type K-connector on the cable from the camera.Does anyone know what the pins are? PALsite has K-connector pinouts...

That's another that has bothered me about this forum. Why are you people gleeting about this person who buys and sells Betas on EBay? There is something called market value. From what it looks like you have a problem with this because you either don't want to pay what is true market value, or you few select people who post alot on here are simply cheapskates. I myself have bought some items off EBay, including Beta VCR's over the years. I have paid high, and I have paid low. It all comes down to what people are willing to pay. It is not the seller who is setting the market value, it is those who purchase said item. I'd get over it if I were you. Alot of us who read this chat page get tired of this. I know I am not alone. Leonard.

I believe I've done this before, but once again I will put in my 2 cents defending Sanyo Betas. My VCR-4030 records in SuperBeta with picture quality that equals that of the Sony SL-HF600. VCR-4027 seems to have slightly off colors (still better than VHS, but not quite the same brilliant true colors I get from the 600 and 4030). I think when the 4027 came out in 1986 Sanyo, Toshiba, NEC, Zenith and all the other makers other than Sony were giving up on Beta so the quality may have started going downhill a bit. My VCR-4650 doesn't record with the same picture quality as the others but that's to be expected as it's the only non-SuperBeta in the bunch. It does have the rubber idler/belt problem, but that will be an easy fix once I finally get around to ordering the parts. Plus in my opinion the red displays look cool, and unthreading after hitting STOP saves head wear when rewinding. AND I bought my 4027 and 4650 at a flea market for a total of $15, and I once saw a VCR-4400 at a St. Vinny's thrift store for $15 as well. I have yet to see a Sony Beta at a thrift store, flea market or garage sale, only on Ebay where they are easy Snail prey.

The problem with The Snail is that he is using his buying power to manipulate the Beta market by creating a false 'shortage' of Betas. He aslo has the advantage of being able to lie in wait for whatever he wants to snap at anything that someone else might be bidding on. It's likely by now that most of the Snails have auction software that can snipe at what they want without The Snail having to be at his computer. If it weren't for the dealers bidding against each other and their customers for the same stock, prices would find their true level. It's interesting to note that in Europe were there aren't nearly as many Betas around or for sale , prices aren't as stratospheric as they seem to be in the US because of the Snails.

In addition, with the Snails you don't get to set the price in terms of a bid. With high starts, reserves and BINs in most of the Snail 'auctions' you're buying, not bidding for product. Why do most Snails have one bidding ID and another Selling ID? Is it because they rely on a level of ignorance on the part of their customers (suckers)about the true nature of E-bay Beta prices? That seems to be the operating practice in most businesses today. Enron used similar Snail tactics to drive up energy prices in California a couple years ago...

It isn't 'market' value when the dealers buy up all the cheaper Betas to resell at obscenely high prices, that they can justify because they've locked customers out of the cheaper stuff...

As for the Snail... it seems he's cobbling Betas together for various units - like the all silver SL-HF 500 that's obviously been repackaged in an SL-HF 300's cabinet - and fobbing them of as 'Near Mint'...

And what's wrong with wanting to pay less? Especially if you don't feel the prices reflect fair market value?

Hey all!I got a little problem with my Sony SL-C9E beta! When not used one day or so.. The drummotor make this this horrible sound.. Like a bearing is dry.. But it do not affect playback/recording picture.. It go away after approx 30 sec of use...!Allright.. that was the first problem.. My second is: Some how the Normal/X2 tracking have "driftet" In the center its not the optimal playback picture.. A little "snow" is shown! But when i adjust it.. A perfect noise free picture is found.. Also in X2 speed! Does anybody know where the adjustment is made.. I have tried the control head.. No luck! :(

Best Regards

Emil Jensen

PS: Hope someone can help me.. And make my Beta live for some other years!

blaaagghh! Went to CommunitGE thrift store and found a DBX type II NR unit, and also a dynamic range expander. Morons wanted $19,19 for the NR unit, and $31 for the dynamix expander. It had 3 rows of cool looking LEDs... Hee hee hee!

Inside there should be a TRACON potentiometer adjustment potentiometer. Also there is a FREE CAP adjustment as well.

TRACON can fix out-of-center tracking or sometimes compensate for worn heads or the like, CAP FREE (One for each speed the machine can play, usually 3 speeds so three pots) adjust will take care of weird errors and compatibility issues. If it's maladjusted it results in rhythmic pulses on the screen, sometimes no Beta HiFi and off-speed audio, which you may not notice because the video will screw up long before the audio SOUNDS off-speed.

Well I just got back from hitting the thrift stores again today, and I have 21 new Beta tapes in my collection. 18 prerecorded ones and 3 L-750s. I got somebody's entire John Wayne collection, including Sagebrush Trail, The Shootist, Paradise Canyon, True Grit, 'Neath the Arizona Skies, Lawless Frontier, The Star Packer, Blue Steel, and Desert Trail. The other titles are Fletch, Police Academy 3-Back In Training, Space Camp, Time Bandits, Star Trek Episode 18-The Squire Of Gothos, Murphy's Romance, Barbarella, Iron Maiden-Behind The Iron Curtain (A Sony Video EP) and Disney's One Magic Christmas. All but 2 of these tapes came from the same St. Vinnys (Full name: St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store) and the other 2 from a Goodwill. That St. Vinny's also had a Sony Dynamicron L-750 in one of those folding tape cases that according to the label contains My American Cousin and Armed Response. In between these two stores I stopped at a small photo/video store called The Camera Company and lo and behold, on the bottom of their videotape shelf, were two Sony L-750BT tapes still in their blue and gold shrink wrap.

Here's a wierd one...

Was recording off my Dish Network via RF inputs (through an A/B RF switcher, so I can record from regular cable or the Dish via the same RF input on the VCR...)with my SL-HF1000. Sound came out fine-picture was completely black. Switched over to regular cable, and the recording was fine. Would a problem in the cable from the Dish box to the switcher account for that? I know there's nothing wrong with the 1000, since it records from regular cable OK. I know the cable from the switcher to the 1000 is good, since regular cable (on channel 3, which is the RF out channel from the Dish) records OK. Am I forgeting to check anything? This one kinda confuses me...

Well... Sounds like a unfixxable flaw ;).. Might as well send it to the Wards Home For Wayward Mazda Millenia S-es, Betamaxes, and other Outcast Professional Audio/Video Equipment :) I'm sure the other residents will really love it. It can be a good role model for the SL-HF300 !

Jesse-

I KNEW you were going to say that!!! :-)

Sorry, but I believe that the best discipline comes from the parents. To send my 1000 off to a home for wayward Beta's would hurt it's self-esteem, and make it more difficult to assimilate into society later. It's going to be tough love, but I think I'll keep it here until it learns to behave...

Jesse, I don't know how serious your little organization is but I have two potential candidates... they both need a little "medical Rehabilitation" so to speak... One is a Toshiba Betamax deck with loading drive problems (Gear has come loose from shaft, NEEDS lube) and the other is a U-matic with problems on its PW1 board needing several fuses and wires replaced... Here are links.

http://www.betainfoguide.com/Pix6.htm

scroll down to Toshiba, it's the VM40

http://www.labguysworld.com/Cat_Sony007.htm

And the 'Matic-mie. he's the VO-2600. it's the EXACT one in the photo.

Phil: Have you tried connecting the Sat receiver up to the 1000 via the A/V jacks and putting it in line mode? I gotta DirecTV hooked to mine and it's perfect. I'm recording a movie off Starz right now as a matter-a'-fact.

Andy: Nice score from the thrift shops! I've been lucky myself in that department as past-mentioned. :)

To phil: Are you sure the RF-out on the Dish box was set to 3 and not set to 2 or 4? And that the RF switch was set all the way? And that you didn't put the antennae-in cable into theTV-out plug or vice versa(it happens to the best of us sometimes)?

Try swapping cables or switch positions to root out problems in those areas.

Thanks for all the ideas...

1) I can't use the line outs on the Dish receiver, because they're hooked up via S-video cable to my home theatre system. Tf the receiver had 2 sets of line outs, I'd be golden-I HATE using RF cable for anything but cable TV.2) I tried switching the RF in on the 1000 to channel 4, just to see if I bumped anything on the Dish receiver when I was moving it around...no luck on either channel.3) The weird thing is that I'm getting audio, but no video.

I'm going to replace the RF from the Dish receiver to the switcher and see if that clears things up...

Yuck! Well, the Wards Home For Wayward Mazda Millenia S-es, dot-dot-dot is not a Critical Care Centre... Hmmm u said just fuses? I guess I could do it, but the shipping is gonna kill me. Is the Toshi-beta a Hifi or Super? Hmmm.. Wires? Nope. Unless I just made "jumpers." What happened, you shorted it out? :( I miss my VO-1600!!!!!!!!!! I didn't know it had stereo hi-fi sound... No it doesn't! Because I play back its recordings (1) on my VP-5000 and I only get one channel of mono audio. One audio channel is unused. Phil, my Home is not like a juvie ward for bad Betas, it's a rest home! It's Mazda, Umatic, and Beta community where machines have a restful life (endangered animal home :) ). The 900 could be Group Overseer... Besides, I'm a good Beta parent figure~! I'm not mean to machines! At WOAI they're surprised at how "nicely" I treat the Betacam SP machines.. I don't SLAM in the tape like they do and I make sure that audio levels are set so where the metres arent PEGGED during recording or playback.

Jesse the 2600 will give you fits since it's PIGTAIL fuses that need changing. you have to know how to solder. If I didn't have three machines comming in the mail i'd fix it myself but why bother when I have two that were, in their day, the flagship comming in the mail? Both are not here because the people who have them haven't gotten around to shipping them yet....

Matched editing pair of VO-2850s, with TRI editing controller, and a VO-5850. I've got a Panasonic NV-9400 portable allready, which is the JVC 4900, which the KY-2000 is designed to go with, and ther was a smaller and much rarer 2-tube camera that is not as good as the 2000 but is more sought after because it is rare....

The 5850 I"m not sure about... the 2650s I believe do, they were the pinnacle of video editing in their day. They are pictured on my web site, shown here: http://uk.geocities.com/redoctober7000/Mypage.html

on video page 1, I believe.

My high school's library had one of those Umatic battleships! I think it was a VO-2600; about 2½' wide and like 10" high? There was a matching 19" Trinitron TV/Monitor w/ rotary tuners. And let's not forget the huge Umatic collection of like National Geographic and stuff like that!

And happy 2K3 for those where it mighta hit so already or belated to all else! Keep those ßetas running thru the new year! ;)
