My whole load of Betamax goodies came.

SL-2001 (Works fine. this deck is NOT BIs compatible)

AC-220 Should work. Has an NP-1 (? condition.)

RM-E100V Needs a control-L deck.

Misc. remotes and cables associated with the whole lot. Whole outfit is in really nice shape. Included a K-plug breakout that does something I don't know...

Speaking of decks like the T-50ME, what the hell is NTSC 4.43?? I mean, as far as I know, all of NTSC-land uses 3.58.

Well Sean, if you don't know what the k-connector breakout is for, why dontcha just send it to the Wards Home for etc, etc, and we'll analyse it for you. :)

Actually, NTSC 4.43 is not PAL at all.. it's the NTSC colour format applied to 625 line 50 frame video formats, which use 7 MHz wide channels, as opposed to NTSC 3.58 which is applied to the 525 line , 30 frame system, which uses 6 MHz wide channels. There is also a PAL-M which is the PAL colour system applied to the 525 line , 30 frame system.

Actually NTSC4.43 isn't any of those. NTSC4.43 is simply the standard NTSC video (525lines, 30fps) with the color on a 4.43MHz carrier rather than a 3.58MHz carrier. PAL-M is standard PAL video (625lines, 25fps) with the color on a different carrier.

4.43 MHz color carrier could not possibly work on a system M video, since system M uses a 4.5 MHz sound carrier. Look up your engineering data... :)

Actually, notice I didn't say *what* carrier the color was on on PAL-M. But, nonetheless seems I was incorrect on the PAL-M (but still stand by my comments on NTSC4.43). PAL-M *is* a 525/30fps system and uses a 3.58MHz color carrier (same carrier as NTSC and PAL-N. Most PAL formats on the other hand use a 4.43MHz color carrier. Actually there's so many different flavors of PAL it's almost sickening (B,D,G,H,I,K,K1,L,M,N).

Yep, and that correlates with what I've said. Now one thing I didn't clarify is that even though PAL-M uses the 3.58MHz carrier, it still uses PAL color encoding which is something that differentiates it from NTSC (as such you'll only get a B&W picture if you send a PAL-M signal to an NTSC tv). And, on that same note, NTSC4.43 still uses NTSC color encoding on the 4.43MHz carrier, which makes it incompatible with some old PAL sets.

ROTFLMAO!!

Copying one format to another (assuming they are the same video system) is pretty easy. Take the Video/Audio outputs from the machine you wish to record FROM, and connect them to the Video/Audio inputs of the machine you wish to record TO. Start the tape on the recording deck first, then push the play button on the playback deck. This is the simplest thing to do. You can of course do a crude editing by using the pause button on the recording deck to take out scenes you don't wish to keep.

NOTE: This method will usually not work properly when copying tapes that have copygaurd/Macrovision encoding.

How does one updates the ROM on an analog player ??

Regarding: I think the Macrovision used on DVDs is a stronger version than that used on things like VHS. I would imagine it was purposely designed that way to render those black boxes, macrovision-killers (whatever) not totally effective for DVD duping.

The MV in a DVD is actually produced by the player (under the control of the firmware ROM), not the DVD itself. Upping the ROM simply tells the player not to turn on the MV, therefore allowing a perfect copy to any analog format.

DVD's also employ another protection scheme called Copy Guard Management System (CGMS) which is only effective on digital VCR's (i.e. MiniDV) and DVR's (Tivo, etc.). If the recorder detects this signal, it simply refuses to go into record mode. This, of course, is to prevent a perfect bit-for-bit digital clone. Has no effect on things like Beta, however.

Beta is affected by MacroVision to a certain extent. For example, the last model, SL-HF2000, reacts just like a VHS when copying from a DVD. Image goes from bright to very dim all the time.

Others such as the SL-HF1000 will display thin red lines on DVD copies, but it would not display this behavior with all DVDs. (I've been able to make a "perfect" copy of Yellow Submarine at B1s-SHB)

Finally, older models will just copy flawlessly. It is the case of the SL-2710 for example.

There is an easy way to get around copy protection on DVDs when copying to tape. Just run the S-VHS output to a time base corrector; and run the composite output from the time base corrector into your Beta machine. Certainly not a digital copy - but let's face it - you want it to be recorded on Beta anyway!! And if you haven't looked lately, the price of commercial time base correctors is muchlower than it was even five or six years ago. I've seen lots of older early 1990s models offered for less than $ 200. 00. In most case these TBCs have both S-VHS and composite video inputs and outputs. Check it out!!!

I have a box of Betamax tapes I would like to sell. All the tapes are in nice, clean condition. There are 15 L-750s. All of the tapes are Sony except for 1 TDK and 1 Scotch. There is also a pre-recorded "Sesame Street" tape ( 30 minutes) - probably an L-125; andan SSK "Wet Type" Beta Head Cleaner Tape (Fluid bottle long gone - but available at RadioShack!) All tapes have sleeves in good shape; and I will throw in some new, unused Sonylabels for each tape. Not the usual thrift stop rejects - came from a customer who had herfamily Beta tapes transfered to DVD. Will sell the whole lot for $10.00 plus actual UPS or Postal Service Charges to anyUSA address. If you're interested, send me an e-mail.

ROM updates for DVD players (for those that actually HAVE them, which are relatively few) are pretty simple, but risky. And they do not require much in the way of a computer, only something that can burn a file to a CD-ROM disk. You find the upgrade file for your machine, download it, burn it to CD-ROM, then follow the instructions given on the site you downloaded from. Basically, you put the disc in your DVD player, and it does the rest. There are usually a series of steps for you to follow before and after. To find out if your machine has an update, just do a Google search on [make/model of your machine here]+ ROM

Mmmm, if I had $ 30, I'd do it. Since VCRGary is sending me another (Much better) SLO-1400 (FREE!) I have my old, beat-up one to use as a parts machine. I could basically turn that 5200 into a tuner-timer-remote equipped 1400. But I don't have the $$$ so I won't. And anyone with ambition, I'm not up to sell my old 1400, I wan it for parts for my good one. VCRGary is a bit different from the usual "Snail" because he knows his stuff and so far has been very accomodating in my transactions with him. I was able to trade my dud BR-S611U for a working SLO-323(5?). He's actually quite nice and helpful, so, in spite of his high prices, I can reccomend him. and, yes, he did try to sell an SLO-340 for $ 200 but he reutinely charges a lot at auctions because he knows he can get it. privately, he gives better deals.

All those SL-5xxx frontloaders I've seen all seem to suffer from that same "tired-w/-age" problem. Tape playing back too slow w/ lines in the picture; liear audio sounds like an audio tape running too slow (wowwy). Funny thing is, I've fixed a couple of SL-5200's already. Most likely needs: complete set of new belts & a loading tire; possibly: capstain motor removed and lubed & (worst case) all the electrolytic caps on the SS-18 (servo) board replaced. Considering it...maybe. ;)

Re: tuning U.S. cable channels above 37. According to schematic for SL-HF500 and probably several others altered tuning might be possible with a bit of work. Just need to throw the UHF local oscillator off-frequency about 150 mHz lower than shipped. Then "hacked-UHF" should re-capture those lost cable channels but will lose UHF channels above 45 (no big deal in this town).

Look for big shiny tuning module BT-898 or similar at the rear of TU-58 board. Inside find UHF tuning diode D104 and UHF osc Q102 (2SC3373). I think those nearby loops of wire would tune much lower if a teeny bit of fridge magnet was stuck in them. Might require same to coils near UHF amp Q101. Too late for this chassis, the autopsy shows death caused by broken S-threading ring and other damage as previous owner got his tape out the hard way.

But if a Betamax could access those missing channels, then VHS machines would be totally unloved.

Brenda Ann

nnils:

That procedure is a bit tricky, as you actually not only have those coils that you have to retune, and make them all track.

1) RF amplifier

2) Local oscillator

The RF amplifier needs to track the incoming channel's frequencies, the LO needs to track 45.75 MHz lower than the incoming signal. If these don't track properly, you will have a very snowy picture, or none at all.

My DVD player (Panasonic, will you believe it!) has a metal case. but it was a gift and it's a rather high-end one so I really can't say anything against it! You usually have to get nicer things to avoid a lot of the rotten issues with modern gear... I've been suitably impressed with my GO-Video deck and can reccommend it to anyone. It's everything a VCR should be, having HiFi, front (Hidden) inputs, rear inputs also, back-up controls on the front pannel so you can still set the clock, and, if you're ambitious, the timer, wihtout the remote, a linear time counter (Strangely, that has no seconds, but it's better than mush-numbers) and it's also HEAVY because it's made of METAL through and through. it's the Go-Video "encore HiFi" which rarely comes up on Ebay (never seen one myself) so keep your eyes open for it.

My old GE VeHoS-hifi deck (c. '91) has a real-time counter w/ no seconds on the display (0:00) but shows the seconds on-screen. Think it still works but has an inch of dust on it by now.

Of my two DVD's, the Apex 660 has a metal chassis and cover but weighs very little cuz there's hardly anything inside it. A power supply board, process/output board and the controls board behind the front panel. The DVD loader, is, like in most of those "el-cheapo's," a modified atapi DVD-ROM drive connected to the P/O board w/ an IDE cable. In fact, w/ the right firmware, it's possible to load up a hard drive w/ tons of mp3's (on a PC) then connect it slave in the Apex for the ultimate jukebox.

Re: Ni-Cd reviving

Well, sometimes you can do it by zapping it quickly a couple of times with a high voltage (~24v), but if you blow yourself or your battery up, I take no responsibility. But, once Ni-Cd's go to zero volts, it's not likely they'll ever work again, and even if the zap trick works, it'll only be temporary. You'll either need to rebuild the cell or buy a new one.

Unfortunately that's the case with my NP-1. I get exactly zero volts across the contacts. I might pry it open and see what's inside. The Lead-acid gell-cells that go with earlier VTRs SLO-340, etc, eventually turn to solid lumps of crystal. But they are great batteries and you can do a lot with them. You can buy a kind of battery like a BP-60 at Radio Shack, but it's a bit bigger. Anyone know what kind of battery the SL-3000 used?

YOurs is revivable. Mine is not. My old camcorder ( a HUGE VHS monster) uses a gel-cell battery that can get cranky. If it will power it up, try holding down the power switch before it it turns off or something to get the last little dregs out You may just have to power it up and let it shut off 50 times or so. If it can be held powered up for a while, then see if the charger will charge it any. If it puts any kind of charge in it, let it get full, then see if trying another charge cycle will charge it any at all. Then put it in the VCR and run it down as far as you can by playing a tape or something. then power it up under the low charge condition to drain it more. Then charge it again. The power supply to some more modern camcorders has a "battery refresh" cycle and we may stand to profit if we can adapt these for out NP-1s and NP-11s. Be sure to match the type of charger to the type of battery.

Hey Sean how about I send it to you, and you connect it (after the car starts) as if it was a car battery so your monster Buick engine can jump-start it!! eeeee heeeee heeeeee! uuughh.. Can anyone tell me what direction current is fed through the batty? (like, what terminals is charge fed through? The + and -, rite? And what is the "|" terminal for? A charge-nanny?

Guess that would fit the SL-2500, SL-2710 & SLO-420 also. SL-2700 too maybe?

I'm pretty sure it fits all of those, but I'm not 100% sure it fits BOTH the 2700 and 2710... If it has a changer socket, it should. my SLO-1400s have hidden changer sockets but I've never seen the changer for that chassis, it may only be for the 1400 or it may be that changer. I've heard of having dificulties getting it to fit properly.

It might physically fit those American Betas but it my not be compatible with US voltage. Also the pinouts and/or firmware might not be able to work a US VCR. I can't imagine Sony making too many drastic changes to the pinouts/firmware but I suspect the voltage thing would be a problem...

Unless it's actually powered by the VTR thru the changer port...

You Americans like to try new things. Buy it and see if it works on your Betas...

The 2710 has a changer socket on the rear, dunno about the 2700 tho, cuz I ain't got one (I kinda guess it did since they're both pretty similar). Do those changers require an external power source or are they powered via the VCR thru the DIN changer socket?

As a owner of both the 2700 and the 2710, They re both built on the same frame, with cassette doors and transport buttons at the same place. Both have the CHANGER port.

The only significant difference for that matter is that these two models have different mechanical chassis and loading systems. The 2700 cassette door is deeper inside the machine. Perhaps it makes a big difference but I m not sure.

Well, eee hee hee, after some industrious playing around with the AC-220 and some hard disk magnets, I was able to convince its relay to click and get stuck (momentarily) in the CHARGE position (I guess), during the short time it was stuck it made a low buzzing noise and the CHARGE lite was dim, real dim. Then, it un-stuck itself and turned off. Darn! So, I bridged the - and | terminals, and voila!, the CHARGE lite comes on and the charger runs current through the batty. However, the batty gets really hot, and there's no voltage across the terminals (after about an hour or so of charging)

blargh! Anyway, as I was saying, to verify that I hadn't shorted the AC-220 and fried a relay or something, so that the CHARGE lite was on but no current really flowing through the batty, I connected something to its + and - terminals (CPU fan), and it started running. So rite now the NP-1B is on the hot seat... I'll see if it charges at all. I wonder why it just stores that little tongue-tingling bit of current but won't charge?

We beinGE good things to livinGE.... Damn that decaying NP-1 plastique! I tried to pop it open so I could see how many cells it had inside, and a huge crack along the length fo the batty appeared. Darn it! Now the NeeP-1 won't lock inside the charger or 2000mie so I guess the effort is moot. Should I just throw it away? Nearly all of its bottom casing is missing...

The third contact is the temperature monitor. That is how it can tell the NP-1 is getting too hot. try putting that CPU fan across the NP-1 to drain it as far as possible... but you broke it, I really don't know.

hmmmmm or get some White Pearl Mica millenia paint and paint the SL-2000 or Betamie with. Oh well now that i know the 3rd terminal is the temp nanny..... The NeeP-11 won't even take a charge. Been there since 10 this morning, and it's still hot but it has zero voltage across the terminals. Oh WELL I suppose I can find another.... ;)

Hi,I have a problem with a F30 beta machine, and hope somebody might have the experience to suggest a solution. The machine winds a tape in, but then continues winding forward, as if to take up slack. It will do this until the end of the tape. No functions, play, ff, rw, eject are available. Turning off/on does not help. Tape has to be ejected by manually. Thanks in advance for any help with this problem.Luke

Well, there ya go, Sean, show all those bums on the road that Beta ain't dead! All I remember seeing is the shirt, but bumpersticker..well. Why couldn't we have had one of those yellow signs w/ the suction cup that were so popular in the 80's that says, "Betamovie on Board" or something? ;)

If one could come up with one of those signs (Shouldn't be too hard, actually), it wold be quite easy to create such a beta-related message, given the array of modern typesetting equipment one can come up with at the local "staples". There is one printer from "Brother" that makes prefabricated adhesive labels in a variety of shapes and colors. I have the self-contained version and Finding yellow label material shouldn't be too awful hard...
