Well.... why do the chat page owners take off our snalie-grams but don't take off yukky messages like that one? OH well. I found my InfoCadmium NoPower-11 cell.... I charged it and it ran Betamie for quite a while. Hee hee.. Guess a couple months of not being used didn't hurt it at all. Battybank didn't do quite a good job on the batty case seal, because it fell apart with just a little tug from me. Who cares, LOL, I'm just glad I found my info-Nutria cell because now I can take Betamie to the rodeo and look like a ENG person, LOL! And I'll b sure to take my "4SanAntonio - Intern" badge, too! eeeeeee! ___@_**-[Intern]

I see. I can do that. Easy. Got the SLO-260, it needs a belt. it has gotta be the best-built beta I've seen, all the functions and so on are very crisp, the controls clearly labeled, etc. The Beta logo on it is one we haven't seen before.

to papalazaru; there are a couple ways of dealing with your 'sag' problem. Either try burning off the excess with a blowtorch, heat gun or solding iron or you can trim to fit with tinsnips or a Dremel rotary tool.

hope that helps

I wonder what would be the effect of simply removing the Digital effects board like Sony did to the SL-HF-200D to make the SL-HF-2000? Maybe some other modification is involved? It seems that when the chopped the humorously incongrous and somewhat juvenile posting, they also snipped some of ours! (No pun intended...)

OK, now the chances that I will actually get an email with someone about this are slim to none cause I've tried before, but I desperately need it. I have 6 betas, a Sony SL-HF300, SL-HF400, SLP-305, and Sanyo VCR-7200, VCR-4030, and VCR-3900II. Out of all those 2 work CORRECTLY. The 7200 and 4030 function, but the 7200 has a horrible flutter problem and the 4030 eats tapes when you try to record, which is useless to me since I'm in the middle of an editing project. The 3900II had a bad head when I bought it and really bad REW and FF problems, so I took a couple of parts out of it for the 4030, which is now useless as well. The HF300 works fine, and so does the SLP305, but its a player only, not a recorder. What I really need to do is get my HF400 fixed. ALL THAT IT NEEDS is a FU-38 circuit board. It's cracked right down the middle and it prevents it from doing anything, not to mention that Back to the Future is stuck in it. I DESPERATELY NEED THIS CIRCUIT BOARD! PLEASE if you have the part or an HF400 with a bad loading mechanism (I can just take the mechanism out of the one I have and put it in the other one) LET ME KNOW!!!! I need it ASAP!!! Thanks for ANY help that anyone might have. my email is [email protected] just to clarify. Thanks

I remember Andy Sanchez mentioning that the SL-HF 300 and SL-HF 400 shred several boards and you might be able to swap between them. Also I think Jesse Alonzo had an SL-HF 400 that wasn't running. Unless he released it in the wild at some time he might be able to offer you a board or two...

I've got an SL-HF-600 with whacked out heads and tracking. The heads are worn don to nothing, basically. I was going to send it to Andy but he doesn't repond to my EMails anymore, I don't know why. If anyone has had luck contacting him, let me know, but if I can't get in touch with him I'd be glad to look and see if the 600 has a suitable board and then part the unit out at very reasonable prices (no more than, say, $20-25 for that board if it has it). Since I only paid something like $100 for it I'm sure to make lots of money parting it out at fire-sale prices. Since I have The following units in good working order: SL-HF-900, SL-2001, SL-20, SLO-1400 (+ parts deck) SLO-260 (needs belt) SLO-340, SLO-323, and so on, the 600 is really extraneous in its condition and I'd rather recoup funds for another spectacular unit ('nother 900? dare I say it, a 1000?) thatn fix the 600, I'll re-post on this subject when my other industrials (SLO-260, SLO-323, SLO-1400) are confirmend to be runners. As you can see I have quite a bit in th industrials. They are nice machines. The 260 DOES have a full tuner. If anyone sees the timer for it please let me know. It would make a nice accessory.

The SL -HF 400 and SL-HF 600 have the same button array around the transport controls (PLAY FF RR STOP REC PAUSE etc) as well as the TRACKING knob and INPUT and MPX switches so presumably you can use the same board for both.

There does seem to be a frame advance and tape return switch that may be on that control board in the 600 and not on the 400 but I've never been under the hood so they may be on a separate board...

To Casimir

The EVS 1000E is a great machine - the things it is missing are frame by frame in the reverse direction and proper RC time code for editing. The EVS 9000E has both these. and is the best domestic Hi8 machine there is. I would value it today at about 120/ 140pound, so I hope you didn't pay too much for it!

You can use digital 8 tapes on Hi8 perfectly. A D8-60 tape will give you 90mins at SP on Hi8.

The reason EVS1000 can do perfect editing is because it has flying erase head [there are 5 heads on the EVS1000 drum - 2 for picture and sound recording, 2 special heads for trick picture modes and 1 for erase]

Hi8 [and video 8] can have PCM stereo because when the format was developed SONY though about the future and made the tape wrap on 8mm 270degrees instead of 186 like Beta. The picture only needs the same space [186degrees] so there is a section of 'dead' tape which can be used to store something else [like digital stereo sound or timecode for editing]

Hi8 conventional FM stereo is recorded by the picture heads [like all video formats in the USA] but in the UK, all other formats need extra heads to record FM stereo. Again, Sony decided to make a format that would be universal worldwide. That's why UK and US 8mm camcorders can play each others tapes in stereo too.

Sony made a video 8 machine in the '80s that recorded 6 channels of PCM stereo on one tape - a great idea for a multitrack for your studio - the only problem was that you couldn't record or play all 6 at once - you had to select which pair of channels you wanted - obviously they didn't want to build a machine with 6 A/D and D/A convertors in it when the majority of people wouldn't use it. I assume they couldn't guarrantee gettin all six tracks in sync by switching the convertors fast enough so they didn't do it.

Anyway enough about 8mm - except that the early machines - like the EVA300 and 'V' series camcorders were based heavily on the Beta ring loading mech, but just smaller - they are good to work on.

And before anyone comments, I know I mention in the above post about UK & US camcorders being compatable. Really what I should have said was that 8mm camcorders that are designed to playback foreign formats [EG a UK PAL machine playing an NTSC tape] will do so in stereo. Most UK VHS machines that pay US tapes will NOT playback an NTSC tape in stereo.

just before anyone starts complaining.

Actually, US VHS does require a separate set of off-axis heads to record the hi-fi/afm audio. Beta and Video8 use the video heads to to the same. Maybe the reason NTSC-playable PAL decks won't work is cuz the PAL hi-fi heads are at a completely different angle making it difficult to add NTSC hi-fi?

Maybe the same applies to Beta which is the reason Sony never made a multi-system Betamax w/ hi-fi? I'd guess they need to have a sepaarate set of audio heads on the drum used only in PAL/SECAM operations.

Marcus I have your FU(**)-38 board that you asked for, however this comes from a SL-HF400 that was "delivered" by our excellent Postl Service (which is why the damned thing is busted to begin with). The thing has a crack along the LINE/PCM and MPX FILTER switches. Plus it has a little piece missing right above the power switch (dont think the trax are broken though. Want it for $1 and postage? The wires on the buses that lead out of it are cut, though. Couldn't get'em off without cracking the board more.

well GEe I wonder if it's due to dirty power... You guys really should protect your Betas with an APC UPS. Not that they need to be backed up by battery (unless you're like me that throws the remote at the TV if the power went out halfway through All My Children), but the UPS will even out the power (unlike a stupid surge protector which only deals with surges), during brownouts and surges. You've also got a $25.000 connected equipment guarantee. http://www.apcc.com GEe the palsite owners must be so proud of us, that we're not doing snailograms and talking technical for a change. :) I found a Sansui reverb amp RA-500 at GEoodwill today... What is a reverb amp? LOL, I haven't hooked it up yet but will in a minute, Just thought I'd ask.

The only differences I know of between the SL-HF400 and 600 are that the 600 adds a frame advance button and random-access tuning on the unit...other than that I think they are identical. How long did 8mm decks use the Beta-like ring loading system? All the 8mm decks I have seen (all Sony handycam camcorders) use an M-load like VHS. Also my CCD-TRV87 camcorder has a 3-head drum-2 I assumed are for video+hifi audio and the 3rd for flying erase, but the camcorder also has the CLEANEST still, slow motion and frame by frame playback of any analog video cassette recorder I've ever used. The still picture (PLAY-PAUSE mode) looks like a still photograph on the TV screen. How is this possible with only 2 video heads? Is it possible that it also uses the flying erase head as a special effect head?

Heya everybody!Big day on the beta front! Got the BUgs bunny bumper stickers, except they're NOT bumper stickers. They're removable labels. One will still look nice INSIDE the window of the Buick, and I will still be scaning them as soon as I get my scanner back up and going (Windows ME ate the drivers and I didn't use it enought to warrant puting them back on. Now I have a couple things I want to scan so this is a good idea.

Furthermore I got the SLO machines, the SLO-323 is in fine shape, formerly owned by McDonald Douglas. It had one minor problem, part of the mech. that activates the rewind funtion had fallen out, so it needed to be put back in. The machine works a treat. The 1400 seems to have speed problems and MASSIVE video issues. But, hey, it powers up. So maybe I can "frankenbeta" my two 1400s to make one runner.

Cheers

Anyone familiar w/ the an SL-800ME? It looks like an 8-system deck (!!), but I wish the pix were a bit larger and more close-up. Guy says he can't test it because it has a Continental Europe plug on it. I was looking to see if it had a 110/220V switch on it like some equipment w/ that plug does (or maube auto-voltage?). An adaptor for that can be had at the RatShack. Starting $15.99 isn't bad.

The 320, 323, 325 and 383 only recorded in X-1. the 325 can play back any speed, however, so it is regarded as superioir. I would be glad to make a tape at X-1 for you. With the cariable speed playback you can sometimes convince the 323 to play back X-2 tapes but don't ever count on it. The 320 is inherently faulty, stay away from them at all costs.

Hey guys! I got an HF450 that was in working order according to the guy on Yahoo auctions where I bought it pretty cheap. Problem is that is was damaged in shipping by UPS (gaah!). It looks to me like the package was dropped from a height and hit w/ a pretty good amount of impact. The right, rear corner is banged up and the part of the rear panel (around the A/V jacks) is bashed in! Worse, two of the circuit boards are cracked. These boards are the SS-10 and AU-19 (top and middle in the triple-stack). The cracks extend around the corners where they were screwed to the mounts on the chassis. Also, the thingie attached to the SS-10 that is used to hit the channel-set switches broke off. The power supply, tech mechanism and the board behind the front panel appear to be undamaged. I'm thinking maybe I can superglue the peices of the abovementioned boards back together and then jump the broken traces, I just might get it back to working order. Then I'll see if I can bang out the dents in the corner chassis and rear panel. My question is: Does anyone have a junk HF450 they're cannibalizing for parts? If so, I'd gladly take the SS-10 (w/ channel mech), AU-19 (w/ the A/V jacks on it), the black plastic cover that goes over the RF jacks as well as the cover for the front panel assembly (one of the clips musta broke on that that, too). Also, the unit cover w/ the channel control door (latter was missing on the deck). So, if anyone has these, let's talk. I might be able to save this poor ßeta, yet.

Anyway, I mentioned my SLO-1400 has some video issues... slow playback, very noisy, uninteligible picture, etc. I'm going to try to clean it up inside but I'm not sure that will help. What are the symptoms of bad electrolytics in that type of deck, that may be the issue.

Well Jesse, it looks like you just put both feet in your mouth.. That link's a dud and Franny's works; to which I shamelessly wonder how to type a 'wolf whistle'. No, the 1400 is definitely a Sony Beta. I wonder if it jsut has VERY dirty heads, also perhaps if the capstand and pinch roller aren't gripping properly, it wouldn't be able to move the tape properly no matter how high you set the cap free. Beta HiFi is a good point of reference for checking that, because even the slightest discrepancy in speed causes errors in Beta HiFi.

I did. I gotta say, the cat at the computer is quite cute... not to mention some of those girls at the love parade... Anyhow, on a more serious note, anyone know how far the differences between the SL-2000 and SL-2001 go? I've got both, but only the 2001 works (Like a dream, I might add) and I was wondering if simply adding the front panel off of the 2000 would give it swing search and so forth. I ask because it says in the manual, that, if you have the TT-2000, and the remote, you cannot use the swing search or reverse play or anything like that...

I've had to change boards on an SL-2000 and I imagine if all you needed to do was swap mechanisms you could franken-beta your SL-2001. You'd have to be able to change all off the board not just bits of it. So if the SL-2000 isn't just mechanically dead but electronically as well yer hosed...

Nope, the 2000 is electronically sound but can't spin its head drum anymore. I'll probably swap any boards that are different...

Well in the SL-F1 it's really one board with folds and a sub-boards. You'd have to be able to resolder plastic ribbon strips to try and just change the faade board, for example. Also doesn't the SL-2001 also have a mechanical tape counter to deal with?

sean or anyone else do you want to do some community service and fix my SL-2000? Its camera fuse GE'd out and it needs some work on its batty connector (really loose, have to press down on connection so NoPower-1 will power it.

The SL-2000 has direct drive reels as SL-2500 and 2700 and it has an electronic counter where the 2001 has a mechanical counter and a belt driven clutch for driving the reels, which by the way uses the same motor as the capstan.

Overall, the 2001 looks like a lower quality vcr and I seriously doubt it shares any of its electronics with the 2000.

Thanks for the help on the 2001/2000 conversion. The 2001 is a solid machine in its own right but I guess I gotta get a real 2000, that is, if I want one. As soon as I find my scanner drivers, I'll scan up the BEtamax stickers, and the Rowe sticker from my 2000. FYI here is my web page, where you can see a goofy photo of me.

iiieegh... I should sign up with UK geocities so I can be a member of the club like you guys are. Any of you have those 50s Westinghouse roasters in the attic somewhere? I want one! Just to display it (or run it off of solar power, I'm afraid its 1,6kW heating element will fry our wiring). Hmmmmmm.. I found a user manual for it at an antique store (didn't buy it) and was just wishing I could go back to the 50s and stir up some trouble in the plain-jane vanilla "please-and-thank-you" time. With an iBook!! And the latest in clothing from today's AE or banana republic :) That's not to say I'm a punk or anything; I just have a devilish knack for causing mischief. I still say please and thank you, too!

Jesse: when I scan the 2000's rowe label, I'll send you a hi-quality JPEG, then you can make your own Rowe labels on a laserprinter. Those westinghouse roasters turn up mroe frequently than Betamax decks at the local 'junk' shop, I can get you one for between $10-$ 30. If you are serious I'll snag the next one that shows up.

But seriously, I made that picture several month ago; me and my ton of hair. Someone in another forum where I posted that said that I looked like I was lying dead on top of water w/ the camera underneath (but they loved it). I messed around w/ it a bit in Painshop Pro and liked it about there. But if you can make it nicer, but all means. ;)

what,no slurpee or bustier, jesse? way to go! graduation pictures would probably be the least deceptive, but i suspect most of us have burnt ours. since i graduated before the advent of photography, i can't offer one. i can reveal, however, that i do wear glasses that rival sean's in thickness,in one lens at least. my sight in that eye is 20-600.won't wear them for photos,though..
