This is a strange item... SL-HF-300 listed as a SuperBeta HiFi and it even has a SuperBeta door on it, but I'm sure the 300 isn't a superbeta... is this odd or what. That's also a very reasonable BIN and to be hoest I'd get it if I didn't have my eye on... something.

Too stupid to figure that a toothed belt would naturally go around toothed gears...

Macrovision strikes again. In the USA Intuit contracted Macrovenom to create a copy-proof system for their TurboTax software. Seems if you buy a new computer with your tax refund, you can't reinstall and run the TurboTax program on it when the IRS auditors come by. TurboTax is going down fast (prolly somewhere over Texas).

Just grabbed a Citizen DVD player to go at our food store's electronics counter. Some customer had tried to pull the door open while it wasn't even plugged in, so I got it for $33 US. I popped the hinge pins back into place. Spotted an IDE cable inside. Ran the S-video to the monitor and composite video follows the audio to my SL-HFT7. Who needs Dolby 5.1??

eep, another thing I forgot is that the Rat Shack will not mark down prices (at least OURS wont) if they'r getting rid of stuff. Oh sure a 50 cent markoff really helps at $5 a tape! Grrrr! And their stupor- VehOs tapes are like $12 (Specially Formatted for Digita Audio Mastering Applications and Archival Binder are stuff I see plastered all over those $8 to $15 tapes I see all over hte place) Id rather buy midrange....... And another thing my JVC vehos tapes from 2000 are already falling apart. You figure that the inventors (and they proclaim this as if it is something to be proud of on every single product [and even on their crappy VehOs-C camcorder "YES it's a VHS - Plays In Your Home VCR!" stikkers) of veHoS would make tape that lasts in a VeHoS machine (and these have only been recorded in April 2000 and played in Dec 2002).

WOAI is receivable over much of the western US at night. In the right spot in Portland (where I spent most of my teens/adult life before moving to Korea), I could even hear them well despite 1190 KEX being right there in town (50,000 watt flamethrower that can also be heard over the entire western US at night, and some of the midwest).

Well given how hard out Betas are to come by, I'd reccomend against any head cleaners. if you can do it yourself, use hte propper material and do it. If you can't, have the local tech do it for you, shouldn't cost too much.

The Sony head cleaners are dry system, and use what amounts to a length of leader tape that's only slightly more abrasive than a standard tape. Some of the older ones had some oxide on them with a recording that said something like "If you can read this clearly, your heads are clean" I don't know about the newer ones.

Going to be selling my Betamie's.. one is a Sony 110, the other is the NEC clone. Each one has an at least partially good NP-11. I have only one charger/power supply, an AC-M110. Both cameras work very well. Open to all reasonable offers. I just have too much stuff here. I thought about getting rid of a lot of stuff before, but now it's just got to be done. I will keep my 1000 (for now, at least) and the SLO-1800 that I will be getting from AndyS... but everything else will go, including my SL-T50ME. Someone mentioned the SL-HF-780D I can shed some light on this, it does exsist and is listed on Sony's parts data base as SL-HF780D-JE1 & E1 I believe the suffix JE1 & E1 means it was produced for the Japanese and european markets the JE1 could be a dual standard machine? I want to try "SuperBeta" mode on my SL-HF750, and I bought a non-SP Betacam tape to test. When I played back the video recorded in B-I SuperBeta mode, there was no Hi-Fi sound(mute). The Metal Betacam SP tapes are not reccomended for use on home Betamaxes (except for the ED-Betas) because they wear the heads faster. There was a discussion about this awhile back, and I think we came to the general consensus that Pro-X tapes are CrO2 formulation, like a Type II audiocassette. In my experience normal oxide Betamax tapes work fine in SuperBeta mode, provided they are in good shape.

Just had a Sl-2500 given to me.Also have had a Sl-2700.Other than the Hi-fi part they are both pretty close to the same thing on the inside. They both have dead reel drive motors( these don't have idlers).I have seen several 2500's on E-bay with the same problem--since it must be a weak point on these models does anyone have a clue to the cure? This chassis has no normal voltage regular in the power supply like later Beta's. Thank's

I remember a program about the cuban missile crissis, they had on an old soviet officer, he said that someone said to him that in cuba, they have palms, so why not make the missiles look like palms? he said that that's stupid, a missile is a missile and a palm is a palm... Anyhow, I think that weapons inspectors are a silly idea, since wiht an inexpensive GPS reciever, you can go out in the deesert, bury stuff in a completely random isolated area, with NO landmarks, and simply memorize the lat/lon co-ordinates, and it wouldn't be found for 100 years...

Anyway, speaking of Beta, I ahve an SL-2000 that has OK reel motors but the heads won't turn... DasImperator knows why and how to fix this... But I have an SL-2001 and I do OK. All I need is an NP-1... which I'm in no hurry to get since I have 4 NP-11s all in good working order and what is arguably the best true betamovie made... Anybody out there ever see a BMC-1000K? Thanks Olive for responding to my question.I think the problem with the SL-2500 is probably in the power supply or servo board cause I can run the reel motors a little using a 9 volt battery so I can't believe that both reels are bad because of this.I guess I was hoping for a quick fix.Again, thanks so much for your help.

Maybe take the power supply out of another unit? If you're lucky Andy Sanchez will be willing to step in here and lend some advice, since there are multiple flaws that a bad PS can cuse and I'm by no means as famillair with them as he is.

eeeeeeeee! What year did Reagan go to Iceland? I found a tape at GEoodwill of a press conference where he is talking about talks he had with that Gorbachev guy... It was some russian name thats all I know. The video is a little tiny bit bleedy, and the tracking a bit off, but otherwise looks almost perfect for video probably taped off of antenna. Stupid TDK tape, i HATE It! It seems that most TDK tapes lose the CTRL track, so of course i get no video because my Sonys blank out. Are there any beta decks that don't blank out with no CTRL track? ALso, I have my Speak n' spell, speak n' math, and speak 'n read speakies! They are so much FUN!!! Haha! That guy in the speak n' spell sounds like the car from KNight Rider. THey are such simple toys, but they are so much fun! Anyone know how much they cost? For 1980 that seems like a pretty advanced toy! Hee hee.... I unearthed a couple tapes of ahem... "mature entertainment".. but of course, they are BADLY made copies. The video is just total GARBAGE, it has these interference cross lines all through it, looks like a 4th gen dub, and the colour keeps pulling in and out. Bah! Taped All My Children over it. BTW, WHy does my SL-HF300 have a ghost problem? It shows a faint ghost of the picture pulling to the right. It's annoying, esp since i'm using composite video! Could it be that it's mad at being on top of the Dolby decoder?

Jesse: The "Adult entertainment" tapes are always bad... my SL-20 came with several that had pehaps a 1/4" layer of masking tape and medical (!) tape labels, all of them unreadable. They ran from bad to unwatchable and untrackable... runny colors, wobbly audio, etc... the guy didn't take good care of his tapes or else the labels would have been good... the tapes were't even good for taping over!

I don't know how ANY VTR could work sans Control track, or at least work well enough to be watchable! perhaps a good cleaning to the CTL head will help? I don't know... I've always had good luck with TDK tapes along with Fuji, Sony, Maxell, and Memorex, in that order... BASF is mediocre, no runny colors but they're like someone turned down the color.

I think Reagan and Gorbochev went to Reykjavik in 1986. Gorby wanted to get rid of all the short-range missiles in Europe but he wanted Reagan to give up on the 'Star Wars' defense system.. Reagan gave it some consideration and in the end told Gorby no. With a Russian numerical superiourity in conventional arms giving up the threat of instant nuclear retaliation would've been inviting trouble.

Curiously if a nuclear war ever had happened in Europe, Berlin would've likely been the one city left standing...

The SLP-305 a three-speed player that nicely complements the 323 is up right now. If I can get the 323 a new belt in about a week I'll use it to make your tapes. if not I'll use another VCR. It's old and tired but the heads are in good shape. Suspect it was put away wihtout too many head hours, but time wore on the mechanicals. It was onwned by Douglas Aircraft, it doesn't say McDonald Douglas.

I do have to say that I love the SLO-383. It's built like a tank and I still use it in my production work.

That is supposed to be one of the best machines there is... Why RDG does not list it as a "Dream Machine" is beyond me... perhaps its lack of HiFi? It has LInear Stereo after all... Perhaps its lack of Hi-band? I bet the whole reason Beta HiFi was developed was that at slower tape speeds linear stereo would sound like crap...

Hello.....

I have married a wonderful Lady that has many BetaMax tapes,,,, Some of them arefamily activities, parties, weddings, and graduations,,,,, We would like to save them for future viewing, and need a recorder/playback unit to move the data to CDs or DVDs,,,,,, Does anyone out there have any access to a machine for sale, or know of someone that has one for sale,,,,,

Yeah, the 383 does have linear audio tracks and sounds pretty good. Not the best but good enough. It only records and playsback in B1 speed. It came out in 1980.(wow, the year I was born) BTW.. I have this old (1983) Sears Betavision Beta II, model no. 564.53055050,(now that's a model no.!!) and I think it is B1 speed. The manual doesn't say anything about the speed of the machine. There is isn't any speed switch.(it's got a tuner though - hehe) It does power up, but tapes don't play because I think the driveshafts are stuck from sitting for so long. I'll have to refurbish it. But what speed do you think it is? All I know is the thing weighs a ton! It's got to be about 70 lbs.
