not fair. o well i guess its just like my opinion of buicks being ugly fat cars... Ive never driven one but think badly of them. sean, test drive a millenia and u'll see why they say "zoom zoom" in the commercial. JUst look for a str8away! well LOL I guess I can attribute my buick-opinion to not having a drivers permit anyways. NO, not the plain millenia, the millenia S, because it has the 210hp supercharged Miller Cycle Engine with Dual coolers and Lysholm compressor!!!! LOL, what other car boasts anything like that! :):):) na-ni-na-ni-na-nahhh!! :P hee hee... I wonder if a Crowne Vic could catch up to it. What do you think, Olive? It's too bad that there isn't a switch you could have that would allow you to turn on every character on the beta's fluorescent display. Just to exercise the phosphors. I set the SL-2000's timer, and the TURN ON and OFF phosphors are extremely weak. Left it on for about an hour and they were glowing strong.

Jesse: 1996 Electra Park Avenue: 3.8 Litre supercharged transverse mounted 6-cylinder engine, 240 HP. "Have at you" I say. Hell, the little PT cruiser car my mom is lookin' at gets 215 HP out of a little four-banger! That should saitsfy your furel-economy standard, I think...

Phospohor... Good idea, that is, Perhaps if you had the schematic you could apply voltage wiht a battery. Good reason to get the scematic. If you shine a light at the display of a unit, you'll find all these little lights that you've never seen because you've never used the funtion!

that's the same engine as my 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp. also got a 92 mercury gran marquis[crown vic]. the mercury would be lucky to catch any mazda. the new crown vic interceptor[mercury marauder] at 300+ hp gets 0-60 in 7.5 seconds.

ONe of my ideal cars is the Mercedes-Benz 6.9, fastest production sedan EVER, 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and it will do 160 MPH. Merc. Merauder is also nice. Someone at college drives one of those. Also, parhaps 20% of the cars are CJ-series Jeeps. Many of them red. IT seems to be the official Vehicle of Umass Lowell

Why do I get the feeling that every single one of those items is broken?

I hate it when ebay sellers do the "unit powers up but functionality was not tested" thing. How freakin hard is it to hook a VCR up to a TV and test it? How hard is it to hook a CD player/cassette deck/ etc. up to an amp and test it?

I've got this feeling that this place bought/inherited the scrap pile from a repair shop and is trying to turn a buck on it. Based on the age of most of the units, repair probably wasn't feasible.

I have had mixed results from most brands of tape...it really depends on what kind of shape they're in due to their age. Some of my Sony Dynamicron tapes work great but others produce lots of noise in the picture. The only consistently awful videotape I've run across is the Memorex L-750. All four of the ones I have produce so much noise in the picture when recorded on the recordings are almost unwatchable. Beta hifi dropouts galore too. In regards to old recordings, a lot of 10 Beta tapes I bought at an electronics meet last year contain the last episode of Mash, some news footage from when the Challenger exploded, a couple of documentaries about the Kennedy assassination, the movie Surf Nazis Must Die, and some footage that might have been recorded in Japan. I think so because the label on the tape was filled out in Asian charachters, and the tape contained some Disney cartoons dubbed in Japanese and some Japanese shows that looked like sitcoms. I really have a hard time distinguishing one Asian language from another, but I feel it must be Japansese because isn't Japan the only Asian country that uses NTSC and thus would be playable on my Betas? China, Korea etc use PAL right? BTW "Oat Meal", the ebay auction site http://www.ebay.com has a lot of Betas up for bid, but many of them reach vastly inflated prices by the time they are done. Check your local yard sales, flea markets, secondhand stores etc. It may take awhile but if you're lucky you can find one for $5-$20 and if you're even luckier it works!

AndyW:

South Korea (where I live for the moment) uses NTSC color system M (same as US, including channelization). However, they don't use the same stereo audio system as the US, instead, they use the NICAM system (mono audio is the same as US). They have an HDTV system here, but I have no idea what the technical specifications of it are.

Japan uses NTSC color system M, however, as I recall, they use a different audio carrier and different channelization (at least the Japanese televisions I have owned did not receive US television audio).

Sean, about your RM-E100V: Can it control the VCRs just by using the edit protocol, or do you have to run the video through it as well? Can it perform automatic assemble editing? Which tape transport functions can it control? I saw a couple of them up on Ebay, but the descriptions don't go into much detail.

Do't have to pass video through the RM-E100V but it does need, absolutely NEED to have a COntrl-L port to work.

That's great, because I'd use it between my CCD-TRV87 Hi8 camcorder and SLV-R5UC S-VHS, which both have Control-L ports. I've heard that passing the video through an edit controller degrades the picture quality.

Passing video through anything that doesn't enhance the picture quality will degrade it, even more cables than you need. I can perhaps send you scans of the RM-E100V and its manual.

I'm mean because I'm disenchanted with all sorts of crap like that. Rainbow Vacs are awful. I've used them. They're NOT good. trust me, I know. I have more vacuum cleaners than I have VCRs, and that's saying a lot. Rainbow Vacuums are like buying a VHS machine new in 1976. You pay thousands of dollars for something that is limited at its best and uses an inherently poor system. The worst is a bagless vacuum today that use a "dust cup" system, they make this huge cloud!

UH, Jesse, what makes you think they WOULDN'T talk up there own product... Rainbow Vacs are BAD. No question asked. Sorry Jesse, but I just know. As to the battery issue, if you can find and adapt the charger to a modern camcorder battery of the same voltage and battery type (i.e. for NicAd if NiCad or for Gel-Cell if Gel-Cell, etc.) and get the kind that has a "Battery Refresh" option, you'll be in like flyn. DO YOU SPEND TOO MUCH MONEY ON BETAMAX TAPES WHEN YOU CAN LOAD NEW TAPE FROM A SVHS OR HIGH GRADE VIDEO TAPE, ITS EASY TO DO, HOW?REMOVE THE BETAMAX CASSETTE HOUSING SCREWS AND REMOVE OLD TAPE FROM SPOOL. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO LOAD THE NEW TAPE ON RIGHT HAND SPOOL AS THE TAPE ON THE VHS IS ON LEFT HAD SPOOL WHEN NEW.NEXT UNDO VHS CASSETTE HOUSING AND REMOVE THE RIGHT HAND REEL, IF YOU ARE CAREFUL YOU CAN PEEL BACK THE HALF OF STICKER JOINING TAPE WITH LEADER TAPE.. NEXT: PUT THE EMPTY REEL FROM BETAMAX IN RIGHT HAND SIDE OD VHS CASSETTE HOUSING AND JOIN NEW TAPE FROM VHS NEW REEL OF TAPE BY USING THE STICKY TAPE, OR IF THAT FAILS USE A SMALL PICE OF STICKY TAPE AND JOIN TO SILVER LEADER TAPE ON BETAMAX TAPE TO THE NEW TAPE FROM VHS REEL. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE NEW TAPE FROM VHS TAPE IN THE GUIDES IN CASSETTE HOUSING OF VHS CASSETTE HOUSING AND LEAD TO BETAMAX SPOOOL IN LEFT HAND SIDE OF CASSETTE HOUSING. ONCE DONE REPLACE VHS TOP, MAKING SURE YOU DONT DAMAGE THE NEW TAPE OTHERWISE WHEN YOU PUT TAPE IN BETAMAX MACHINE IT WILL DIRTY THE HEADS UP. WHEN YOU HAVE SCREWED THE VHS HOUSING TOGETHER PUT THE CASSETTE IN AN OLD TOP LOADING VHS MACHINE (if available as you can see the tape inside the cassette housing) AND WIND FORWARD UNTIL THE BETAMAX TAPE IS FULL BUT NOT OVERLOADED, ONCE THIS IS DONE YOU PUT THE FULL REEL BACK INTO BETAMAX CASSETTE HOUSING, THIS IS DONE THE SAME WAY YOU REMOVED IT AT START. THIS WORKS BECAUSE IVE DONE HUNDREDS,REMEMBER IF YOU USE FRONT LOADER YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE VHS TAPE FROM MACHINE NOW AND AGAIN TO CHECK HOW MUCH TAPE LOADED ON BETAMAX REEL.

They couldn't take 5 minutes or so to plug that Viking turntable in and see if the damned thing worked? They had time to photograph it. All they woulda had to to was plug it in to see if the motor ran. At the least they could have secured the tonearm into it's locked position! That needle would probably be done for by the time anyone got it and who knows if Viking needles can be had anymore.

Sean-

See my post a little further up if you want my opinion of this seller.

The stuff is broke. They're just not gonna tell you that up front, hence the "unit powers up but functionality not checked" disclaimer. They KNOW it's broken!

Good place to get parts for stuff you've already got, but I wouldn't suggest buying anything from them thinking that you're going to steal a gem.

I bought a Teac A-170 last month from that Logic Box company. It was a real peach to get it cuz I'd bid for it forgetting that they only wanted paypal (they will eventually take a money order if you ask really really nice). Well it didn't work after all that and opening it up... it was full of sawdust! I changed a belt out but it still had a problem that seems to plague Teac A-170s, namely a loud and irritating hum over one or two channels that pegs the VU meters to the point that one of them has had bits of it's paint knocked off. Resoldered a bunch of joints and still the sparodic hum that finally went away when I figured out it was the bigass switch that toggles from play to record that was getting sticky (and was why the nasty hummage) so I sprayed some isopropyl alcohol (ahhh, that sweet magic elixir) in and around the switch and the little fluquer's been working nice ever since.

First of all: Sean, thanx for the link to here. Second: Rainblow?? No Way! My wife had one about 14 years ago (before I got braindead and got married; too many drugs; I'll admit it), anyway it never impressed me. I have a Filter Queen I picked out of a dump full of water and dried it out and to this day it still works great (that was 16 years ago). Not afraid to take it out to clean out cars; interior and trunks. Hell I'd vacuum the yard just to do it and the darn thing would still keep on going and going and going. When I showed it to a Filter Queen seller/repairman years ago he estimated it to be around a late 1940's model. That's durability. IF it ever dies I would definately get another FQ. Newer house vacs are not built for outside use or for really heavy traffic areas. The Rainblow "Test Results"?? Propaganda.

(3) Jesse, even tho I bashed your Rainblow I can say that I still have 2 Beta cameras for sale. A sony BMC 550 that needs the lenses replaced and the AF and a Sanyo VRC 500 for parts; good lenses an good AF. Boxed and ready to ship (includes extras).

(4) Joel, I have one of those SuperBeta HI-FI tapes. Picked it up at Goodwillies a couple years ago for 49 cents.

The not-so-Dynamicron ES or SHG tapes I have feel "light," whilst the plain old arthriticons with the rainbow stripe across the spine of the case feel heavier. I have for sale two Sanyo beta VCR's, one of which works to a point and the other which doesn't at all. The one that works is a VCR4030 Superbeta mono, and it plays, records, pauses, and has slo mo even, but doesn't like to FF, REW or scan. When you push REW when the tape hasn't been playing it goes back about 2 marks on the counter and then stops. When playing, it goes back, then eats the tape. It FF's fine when not playing but when playing it creates a little slack in the tape and it gets crunched a little when you eject it. The other is a VCR4400 top loader (a while ago I said I had a VCR3900II but I got the two confused). This VCR had REW and FF problems when I got it, so I just took a part out of it for the VCR4030 and its been in my closet since. The 4400 comes with the original wired remote and manual. I don't really know what these machines would be worth given their condition, but if anyone is interested please email me with offers (note: I am willing to sell the remote and manual for the 4400 seperately). There is a possibility that I will consider selling my Sony SLP-305 top loader player only industrial model as well, which works absolutely fine. If I do decide to sell it I will post it up in the next couple of weeks. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks, Marcus

Does anyone know a source for cardboard or plastic slip cases for Beta tapes? I have plenty of the snap-shut plastic cases used by rental stores, but they take up too much room in my storage drawers. I have found the slip cases for VHS tapes, but none for Beta. Any leads appreciated. harrym

Last I knew, Ray Glasser of the Infoguide had a bunch of paper cases he saved off of lousy BASF tapes... see if he has any left. Otherwise it's an irregular item...

Those Nigerian scammers must be getting frisky this week. Got two in one day today. One from the widow of the late dictator of Zaire looking for help getting her hands on her late hubby's loot and another from a chap in South Africa who , wouldn't you know it, has a big ole box of greenback stashed in a safety deposit box from none other than the late dictator of Zaire. For fun I forwarded his scam letter to a couple of the dear widow's various e-mail accounts.

The shades only last for a month or so and I think people 'get it' that you changed ID to keep spammers off your back.

Must be a later model, notice the "BI" designation... the earlier ones were made before it was called "BI". They just say "Betamax".

The SL-3000 seems to be the BII cousin to the SLO-340. Only difference is record speed and Plug socket. I have an adapter that would let me use the TT -3000 with the SLO-340.

Anyhow, I won't go in depth on the political scene but I do think George W. is a decent president and, while not without his faults, is a far sight better than our previous leader and is handling things much better than Al Gore would have been able to.

Moving right along I would like to get a hold of the SL-3000 to see how closely related to the '340 it is, inasmuch as If it has the rotating head-drum portion with the air slits that reduces tape wear. (All the pro betas had the "Compromise" head drum that spun a slim section along with the heads. SLits on this section created a cushion of air for the tape to "Float" on. Less chance of catching the tape and doesn't wear it out like spinngin the whole drum in a VHS machine does (Because portions with no slits spin) VHS is a "Lazy" mechanism...

Boby, about that Viking turntable you posted earlier. Look closely at the model tag -- it says "CSA". That means approved for Canada. Brand name "Viking" in Canada was property of Eatons department store (no longer exists: killed by Sears). Their electronic goods were not high quality. Also it will play at the wrong speed if your electricity is 50 Hz AC.

Lawrence of Vancouver: I went to Nippon Video behind the Richmond IKEA store today. I asked the girl there if they can service a Betamax. She said "Betamax? What is a Betamax?" (Insert Steely Dan's "Hey 19"). Fortunately the same Japanese technician, Kaz, is still there some 20 years later. He has his old Sony Service diplomas all over the wall. Try him instead of hunting for a SL-HF900 service manual. You'll need that machine in top condition before the NHL playoffs...

Hi. I was wondering if anyone knows any information on a Magnasonic Beta Max MVC-700, can anyone tell me how much its worth(if any) and where I could look up some information on it?

Pls email me, thx

As far as I can tell, Magnasonic was a Sanyo product division that marketed primarily in Canada. Since Betas are still largely judged on their utility value as well as their features and not necessariliy on rarity alone, that MVC-700 is not likely to give off a lot of snailie pheromones. At least not as much as the HiFi betas seem to...

Eeee!!! I took Betamie to the rodeo yesterday... The results were spectacular. How could anyone say that Beta video sucks after seeing video recorded by a Betamie? The colours are so vivid and true to life, it seems almost live!!! The NP-11 was a bit weak since it had been sitting so long; I only got about 40 minutes out of it. I just wish that I had more events to cover with Betamie. Naturally, its size implies being with an ENG crew. Some ppl were like, "don't get in the way of the TV camera." eee heee heee! :))

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3005491089&category=21166I am now the proud owner of this Sony RM-E100V edit controller. Like I said, the description didn't go into much detail. Sean, if you could send me a scan of the manual that would be great.

Andy: Some Silly &@$^@%) scribbled all over the manual to try and help him remember how to work his own edit "suite" if I dare call it that... It's also a rather meaty volume so I'd much rather do this by way of my convenient Xerographic copier that I happen to have access to for reasons too lengthy to go into here... So take everything after .com off of the Email address I have listed here and send me a message featuring a mailing address and I'll try to get a photocopy (that's a misnomer... It's a Xerographic copy) out this week.

what's the difference between "xerographic" and "photocopy"

Sean Meskill
Tuesday 11th February 2003

[email protected]

Xerographic is the Xerox process, like used in a modern "Laser" printer (Also a misnomer, but nobody will understand if you say a "Xerographic" printer). A photocopy uses special papers and a bright light to actually expose a photograph of the document... It was a little machine, you put the orriginal on a special bed and the special paper on top, closed it up, set the timer, and a out a minute later you had... one copy. About as good as a mimeograph ("Purple" drum copiers... anybody have them at grade school?) but slower and not purple. True Laser printers just wrote on a special paper with a laser... They haven't been used in a quarter-century at least. I have "The McGraw-Hill Computer Handbook" that is so old it differentiates between Laser and Xerographic...

Uh, sorry to dissapoint you, but $100 is a reasonable offer... Don't believe what you see on Ebay, units go for two to three times a fair price on Ebay. I'll be honest, We're all cheap B@$^@%)s here so don't expect $350 or anything...
