_@_¼¼- Hell, I paid maybe 30 /40 bucks for an SL-5800 and that was with shipping. They're really not snailworthy items. Maybe with a changer you might get more but the damned thing had better actually be working in all transport modes...

Yes. Without its remote, it looses half its value because it had the rare infinitely-variable scan (Found only on industrials like the SLO-323, which I have... Aren't I a lucky little $#|^) and four heads for good freeze-frame, but otherwise, it had no BI record, No Hifi, No HI-band, etc...

I still say you guys are a bunch of cheapskates. Market value is market value. Plain and simple. If an item is really worth nothing, then there would be no demand for it, and it would be worth not a single damn thing. Right? Well, it seems to be that there still is DEMAND out there for good working Beta units. Ebay is a prime example. Too bad alot of people get taken on there, there are only a few sellers I know personally that do sell good used equipment, and there are even some who are quite reasonable with pricing too. How about those who sell Beta units off Ebay? Like Absolute Beta for example. Now, if you ask me , there is TRUE market gouging right there. Have you seen the prices they want for even the most mundane of Sanyo Beta units? Ok, now go back to Ebay, and you'll see the prices are alot less. I'd say Absolute Beta is very unrealistic to pricing of Beta products , when you compare it to Ebay rates. Ebay does represent what the current market is willing to pay. If you can't pay that, then you don't need it. Plain and simple. Maybe some of you do luck out and find things for cheap, but alot of people can not do that so thus why they pay for an item they need. Its a matter of convenience. Really basic stuff you know. I think you get the idea. It could be ALOT worse. Imagine all Betas selling at Absolute Beta prices! Leonard

Well I won't say you're wrong, 'cause you're not. Absolute Beta is having a pipe dream... Ebay can go either way, sometimes you get a deal, sometimes you get rooked, and sometimes you get a fair price. My GCS-1 at $115 was a fair price. My case of ten L-500s at $15 was a deal. and the lowly SL-2400s and so on going for $150+, well, SOMEONE is getting rooked. I'll come out and admit I'm cheap. it just seems to me that declining a reasonable offer of $100 right off the bat is setting yourself up for a fall when units go for LESS than that on Ebay.

Yannow, I have an RM-E100V myself and the manual is around somewhere. Think mine's clean. Currently connected between an EVO-250 8mm deck and a GCS-50. Editing some 8mm's of TV movies recorded off sat to beta (editing out commercials!).

Isn't 8mm wonderful for mastering? Especially Hi-8... just amazing what they do with tape not much wider than an 8 track..

Editing out commercials is like dubbing 'anime'. some people will hate you for it, others will love it. I can see merits to both. on a new tape, you're sick of the same old ads... I've got some old tapes from close to 20 years ago with commercials and it's fun to see the old ads. Also some tapes from TV stations with local ads in them!

Here's an idea. Dub a tape minus commercials. Then dub to a seperate tape just the commercials, and keep adding to it over time. Then you can watch and laugh at the commercials years later.

I am now the proud owner of this Sony RM-E100V edit controller. Like I said, the description didn't go into much detail. Sean, if you could send me a scan of the manual that would be great.

Sony Video Editor Controller. Control two VCRs with S-Video capabilities. I no longer have my VCR but the last time I tested this editor it worked. I don't know too much about it but will try to answer all questions. Shipping will be $6.50 in the continental US. Happy bidding.

Hi,

Error! Editor Controller RM-E100V have not with S-Video Y/C, but with Control-L from whatever videocameras. Sony Editor Controller RM-E500V with key-board and S-Video Y/C capabilities and RM-E300V with S-Video Y/C capabilities and without key-board. Ok.

I'm working and I have all catalogues papers Sony original version PAL (Italy and France) in my home.

Ok.

Thanks Sergio for the advice. Yeah I'd kind of gathered that the RM-E100V uses the Control-L protocol, I never would go near an edit controller that you have to run the actual video signal through. My family is a big fan of the 8mm format too. All camcorders have been of the Video 8, Hi8 or Digital8 variety, and before camcorders my grandpa shot home movies on 8mm and Super8 film. Too bad it never became a more mainstream VCR format. Why, you could make VCRs that could fit just about anywhere, and all those little 4" or 5" television sets could have built in VCRs, and with Hi8 or D8, quality far higher than that of VHS. What kept it from taking over the VCR market, I wonder?

Andy W. The 8mm standard was just 8 years too late. Nobody wanted to stock pre-recorded movies (the real profit) in 3 different formats. Most of those nobodys wanted to stock just VHS. From a marketing point of view I think the movie studios (incl. Sony Entertainment) are glad now that they pushed the worst format - if Beta or had 8mm won, it would be much more difficult to resell the dumb masses the same movies again on DVD today.

Ya know, nnils, I think it would be better living in Vancouver than down here in Wisconsin; last time I checked it was -2 F (don't have centigrade equivilent) @ 19:55. Todays high was a balmy +7 F. Altho we are suppose to get a heatwave starting 12/13. Highs in the 20's, F. Time to get out the sunscreen. LOL. Sean, I suppose my GCS-1 @ $55.00 with shipping was an unfair price?? LOL. Wish I still had the email for the guy I got it from. He had like 15 or 20, GCS-1's at the time.

Not 'Unfair at all. just a damn good deal. It's snowed almost every day for the past week here in MA... It's a whopping 262.42776 degrees Kelvin scale! Gotta love that Kelvin scale! I bought these a while back when I was going to do my own repair work on my 1000, but would you believe that nobody in Korea has even SEEN a Microfiche machine?? Shoot, most every public library back home has them, and many print shops will make hard paper copy.. oh well.. guess there are drawbacks to living out of the mainstream.

Hi-8 is quite nice for such a small cassette. A friend made them and we wanted the best unedited master. Then then film of <1½ hours went to BIs minus the commercials. Funny thing is that I bought the 8mm deck and the GCS-50 as a set since the guy was selling 'em that way and wouldn't split it. Still, never regretted it.

Yes...

Home-made steady-shot: Take perhaps 5 feet of chain and get a bolt that firts a tripod socket. Best is the old tripod knob itself if you have a broken 'pod. Put this in one chain link and screw it to the camera. Step on the other end of the chain and pull the camera straight up. Will take out most of the wobble. Works for any camera with a tripod socket and you don't have to set it up like a tripod and it's more convenient than a monopod and more steady than a shoulder stock and you can use it where a tripod would be declared a pulic nuisance and asked to be removed... This idea came from my friend Rich.

The V-cord is not a portable but it does appear to sport some interresteing modifications such as a cooling fan and what looks like a computer interface port. It may be a "videologic" style editor conversion, however, since the V-cord decks were all 4-head. I've also heard of their use in X-ray or ultrasound scanners or the like, so this may very well be that model...

Yes, I do miss that "it's now safe" screen. Win 98 will do that too but today's new power-saving mainboards are smart enough to know when the OS has shut down and will turn the computer off automatically. If only it'd just wait about 2-3 mins before shutting itself off. Can't complain, though, it's better than like at work where there's all these computers that still say "now safe to turn off" on their monitors, burning it in; these ppl have been gone since like 5pm and it's 10 now. I guess they assume the compy is smart enough to do it itself (nope, w/my experience 1996 mainboard dont do it). And I can't understand why they wouldn't enable disk sleep; it saves a lot on the drive bearings so 3 years later it doesn't sound like you have a turbofan jet engine (yayyyy!) right next to you. Hmmm. Too bad Sony didn't make the Beta have like a little reminder function, so that you could record a message onto it so the next time someone turn it on or something it would say a message, or say a message at a prerecorded time (lol, it announces when it will start recording).

Optimistic eBay seller of the week...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3008177779

Wants a $350 start bid for a BMC-550 camcorder with no battery or charger. Only really worth about 10 or 20% of that and just for record, a new Sony Hi8 can be had for a mere $250 more or less.

It pays to research the price of what you're selling donnit?

Maybe the HiFi light is defective on your VCR Boby? You must have one of those VCRs that enjoys failing one componant at the exact moment you've fixed another...

Good day folks, I have recently acquired a small number of Betamax tapes.I would like to view them but don't have a player and I can't seem to find anyone in town that has a player.Ebay has an auction: http://tinyurl.com/5w19 for a SLO-323.I've noted that most of you aficionados think that the Ebay auctions are priced too high. The auction that I've included a link to (tinyurl.com shortens the actual URL for email purposes) has info about a SLO-323 that's up for sale. I would like to know if $85 for a SLO-323 is a fair price.I eventually want to take the player to a A/V house in town that will convert the Betamax tapes to DVD-R. Thank you for any information on this model,Charlie http://www.charlie-heavner.com

Unless the Beta tapes you have were recorded in BI speed you should NOT get an SLO-323. That model can't play most regular Beta tapes as most Beta tapes would've been recorded in the BII or BIII speed. An SLO-325 or SLP-305 would meet the minimum need for an industrial-quality, all-speed Beta player.

The most readily available consumer-grade Betas on eBay that still are priced within reason seem to be the SL-2300 and or SL-2400 series Beta VCRs. They're reasonably well made and have no drive belts or tires to wear out. Just don't bid for a broken one in the hopes that it "just needs a head cleaning" or other "simple adjustment" as once they're broken they're really not worth the cost of repairing.

hi everyone. found your site while doing a web search. i came across an older Beta player that I found in my dad's garage. It is the Sanyo Beta video cassette recorder model No.VCR4670. When i go to turn it on, a red light comes on under the word "DEW". And it will not allow me to put any tapes in. How do I get this light off so I am able to play my tapes? Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you have an answer for me. Thanks!

heheheh.. YAY! Got my GED, ahem, I mean CED player working! Only too bad that it sold on ebay a couple days ago. Its switch lever is all messed up, you have to slam it upwards to OFF for it to turn off. Some minor video noise once I got it working but OMG that video is incredibly and surprisingly good for a VINYL record!!! HA! I especially love the noise and skip-less picture search. DVD is all jumpy but CED.... HA! Now I can see why ppl love it. I'm dubbing "cat People" to Beta right now. Heheheh!!! Now I don't want to part with CED player!

The DEW light means that condenstion has formed inside the unit - like if you'd taken the thing from a cold storeroom to inside your home living room. Usually it goes away in a few hours if nothing else is wrong with the machine...

That usually means the tape isn't Beta Hifi... did you make it on that deck, with HiFi on???

boby,Try recording a test on a tape and then play it back. If the test tape plays back okay then it might be that the deck works in itself and has problems playing back other tapes because of alignment. It maybe the alignment in the loding mechanism is not aligned propely to the heads.(or vice-versa). Just my guess though.

can anyone help ?I have just acquired a mint sony video camera (HVC-4000P) FOR £ 30. However, it didn't come with a video recorder and I suspect the 14 pin sony socket won't plug into just anything.

Can this camera be plugged into any video recorder (Beta/vhs) that can take the 14 pin socket or do I need the sony model that is compatible with it?

Your camera should plug into any ßeta video recorder with an external camera connector. VHS used a different connector, IIRC... Also, there are adaptors available to allow you to use these cameras on a VCR of any type that has RCA line inputs (also good for BNC inputs with inexpensive adaptors from RCA>BNC)

_@_¼¼

_@_¼¼ - I have an SL-HF 300 manual that depicts a CCD-G5 in it's section on recording from a video camera so I imagine that CCD-G5s were available in the US.

PALsite shows several Sanyo VCR models that used the Sony K-connector and virtually all consumer Beta VCR with a camera socket used the K-plug. I think this Furgeson Videostat VHS-PAL model sports a K-connector as well but it's hard to be certain...

http://www.geocities.com/mick_aka/stuff/videostar.jpg

If you have a spare plug lying around and a 12v DC power supply and some wires and stuff you can build your own breakout box using this pages K=connector pinouts guide...
