I use unshielded cables all the time, too... however, do so at your own risk... If you get massive interfearance, get some coax video cables and label the "R" "G" and "B"...

To Jesse: composite or component? Composite is the ordinary video. Component video is Y, Cr and Cb (or Y, Pr and Pb) signals. The cable quality may not be so important in case of short cables.

Sergio - Betaplus is the Sony Japan home market trademark for the Beta HiFi-Ready series VCRs marketed there. Was used to designate monaural Beta VCRs that, if you bought the outboard processor Sony made, you could convert to a HiFi VCR.

To Boby: Some time ago was manufactured Universal Remote Control called OneForAll that contained a lot of RC codes and was upgradable from manufacturer's home page. IMO the disadvantage of most pre-programmed universal remote controls is that they support only basic functions. If you get the RC's appropriate IC you can make your device to perform hidden functions. Thank you for remote control numbers for SL-800ME. Talking about the use of palmtop PCs as remote controls: it is said that even my HP 200LX (a DOS machine) can be used as remote control.

Most highly regarded moderator, and other valued contributors, would it be worth designating one day a week to be off-topic day? Perhaps Fridays, when we show up at work/school but our minds are somewhere else. Even eBay is not fully awake on Friday mornings about 9:00 GMT. They are busy scrubbing snail slime off their drives or something. Imagine six days on-topic! Imagine that other day!

The Sony high grade seems to be the best choice for new tapes -- I have not had good luck with the new tapes from Radio Shack, but it may have been just one bad batch [or stored in poor conditions]. Anyway, Sony EHG and ES and TDK EHG have been good. Any to avoid? harrym

Well the seller of that VCR probably mistook 'HiBand' for HiFi and being that was a Japan Home Market VCR with all Japanese labeling calling it an import wouldn't be hyperbole.

An eBayer called 'BluewaterTennisCompany' peddling an old monauralSears/Sanyo clone as a 'HiFi beta' seems far more fraudulant than this fellow...

I've seen that fraudulant fellow before myself. Also it's common to see machines listed as something like "Super Beta VCR!" when it's not a "Superbeta"... That's common enough. The HFR-series are also listed quite frequently as "HiFi" decks althought that's only half a lie...

Oh yeah and the RMT-424 came today... "A piece of Functional technology is a joy forever". This baby is NEW. It's somewhere between an RMT-143 and an RMT-148... Best part is since I now only have a code 2 beta (The 900) I can switch THAT back into code 1 and switch my Sony Pro Deck into code 2 and use this remote on BOTH decks!!! Isn't that a hoot! I was wondering why my 900 had stopped accepting power on commands until I found out the remote was in "TV" mode... that'll do it. Gotta watch that, people.

Pepse: got the tape. Plays beautifully. Had to tweak the tracking a little bit... Recorded on the 750??? Anyway, you should get your tape sometime soon...

Re: Tapes to avoid: The WORST video tape I have ever used, Beta or otherwise, is the Memorex L-750. I have four of them, all from my grandparent's Beta collection. All four of them had only one recording on them when I got them, and those recordings looked pretty crappy. The new recordings I made on them were almost unwatchable. Mucho video noise, picture dropouts, and hifi sound dropouts! These tapes came from a batch of dozens that included Sony, TDK, Scotch, BASF, Polaroid, Kodak, Maxell and others, and the Memorex ones were the only ones that were this bad.

Hrm, well as for universal remotes, I use some of the higher end RadioShack/OneForAll's (I like the little LCD screens on them). They support advanced codes so I can program any function from the original including all the digital functions on my SL-HF860D (which is very helpful since I don't have an original). Plus, many also have a JP1 connection so I can connect them to my PC which makes it much easier to do that stuff. Anyhow, just my two cents.

Boby & ami, I have found that the One for All uni remotes are about the best you can buy. At least US-wise. They are simpler to understand than the majority of universal remotes I've tried over the years. They are the only remote I have seen that includes the code for my Home Cable "C" band satellite reciever and it can control about 98% of the functions.

Bad tapes?? I have never cared about the Rat Shack video tapes period; actually their whole magnetic tape inventory (audio and video----oh wait their 7inch open reel tapes were decent). That's actually been my biggest gripe about Rat Shack and I've been going to R S for about, well, sine it was called Allied. Other than that anything with an uncommon brand name are usually junk. And Sony tapes made in the last 3 years, to me, are no better than R S tapes.

Sean, yeah recorded on my 750 from the 450 with very good quality "Gold" RCA jacks. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the tape. There was one other person that wanted a B1s copy of Pink Floyd at Pompeii, who was it?? After that I'm selling the HF450; no room gotta go. Besides I guess I can't see putting a HI-FI deck in storage. I will hang on to the ratty old Toshi V-M 42.

Later. Pepse.

I know that videotape recorders can be used to back up computers, but I do not know the details of the process.

There is/was a card that you could get that would convert compy signals to video line-in so you could disgorge the contents of your hard drive to a VCR. Sorta like those old-timey computers that run off a cassette recorder...

I got the Mustang rewinder today, but it won't work. It will turn slowly without a cassette in it, but it won't wind a cassette. I have contacted the seller, but there hasn't been time for her to get back to me yet. harrym

The seller of the Mustang rewinder got right back to me and offered a full refund. I am sending her a Beta tape [she asked for] so she can check the rest of them. She seems eager to resolve the issue. harrym

Boby, reading back abit: Your question about using a vcr to backup a computer. Yes, there is a device to do that called the Backer32. It works pretty much in the same way as PCM recording. I got one of those out of curiosity for $5 US off eBay awhile back. It's that black almost dogbone-shaped thing that connects to a parallel port and then to the video I/O jacks of a vcr (can be any format; ntsc or pal). The software included then backs up to the vcr (but it has to manually be put into record). Only problem is that the maker never made software/drivers for Windows NT+. So it'll only work from DOS-WinME. Also, it, of course, has to backup in real time. So a 2-3hour beta backup will take that long! Here's some info on it: http://www.viscountvideo.com/danmere.htm

Hey everyone,

I own an old BII SL-3000 with matching camera and power adaptor. The camera works beautifully. The vcr, however, does not advance the tape. It only fast forwards and rewinds. Also, I don't think the head drum is turning. Does anyone care to trade the whole package for a working Sony BII/BIII machine? I know there are some collectors that have piles of decent mono machines sitting around, and would love to restore a vintage unit like this. It includes a car power adaptor, dubbing cables, original manuals (including a cardstock "quick start" guide) along with old, unused tape labels. The best offer will win the package. Email me (omit spamstop) for more info and pictures.

Also, I just found some old Beta tapes today, with one marked "20/20 3-9-77."

C'mon, Jesse, I bought myself my own pro-cam (the GCS-1) for my birthday last year! OH, anyone have a clue as to why when I power up my 900 to the tuner, there's an odd little line rolling through the picture at intervals? this goes away after perhaps ten minutes of simply being on and then the unit will act normally... and, no, jesse, the 900 is NOT a candidate for donation the the wards home... If you think I'm letting go of a turbocharged 900 you're perhaps crazy... My best guess is that it's just interferance from my uber-long RF chains (not used for recording or serious playback)...

I'd need a screen-cap of the problem to know what you're talking about but I do know that if you can sometimes get interference between the tuners of a TV and a VCR if certain channels are tuned between the two even if you are on A/V-in select on the TV. It's still tuned to the last channel you were on...

Re: Tuner issue

Is there any hum in the audio? The rolling bar could be a ground loop issue. I've sure had my share of those. Down with multiple grounds!

Just reread the complaint about it going away after ten minutes. Sounds like a temperature related issue in one of the vcr's. Possibly a bad component or solder joint that somehow works better when up to temperature. Possibly in the PSU or on a board.

Yeah the RF units tend to go all screwy with the years. the RF unit in my SLO-323 was not operable... It's not a hard part to deal with, last I knew, however... Nor do I care, I use the 900 a lot (not just as a VCR but as an RF Modulator/demodulator) so it's on about as often as it's not...
