Hey Franny... Seems that Derek can't be decisive... on Betalore II he's selling them for USD 1500. Hmmm. I wonder which he really wants.

Brenda: Thanks. That would be nice if I was actually interrested in any three of those titles enough to pay the shipping. CEDs are HEAVY. Plus the only two I'd want would be "The French Connection" and MAYBE the Deathwish film. Oh, and weren't you going to send me a file? I have to go and look and see what it actually was...

Sean,

Yep, got it, and your file is on it's way.

I think even $1500 sounds a bit highish.. even for mint GCS-50's and edit controller. For that you can get a couple near-mint SL-HF1000's with remotes that have all the GCS-50's editing features plus the built-in tuner, etc.

Sean, check out Al Stewart "Roads to Moscow." I can send you an mp3 but it's over 7 megs. Haunting atmosphere holds up well 30 years later, whereas "Year of the Cat" seems as dated as Al's polyester suit. http://www.tralfaz-archives.com/coverart/S/stewart_catb.jpg

Let's see. you're in the UK. Those betamovies aren't worth much. As equipped, I'd say that if it's the tripple charger, you might be able to get perhaps 25 Pounds for it... Less if it's just the single charger. (Actually, I don't know if the tripple charger was avaibale in the UK...)

Probably closer to £35-40, given the current exchange rate of about $US1.60/£1.00. These tend to go for around $US50, however, not many of them include the manual or charger at all.

I gotta love that description. Unfortunately that's a rediculous price. For a few dollars more, you can BIN a checked-out SL-800ME from VCRGary. Contrary to poular oppinion, he's not a snail in the true sense. He sold me an SLO-1400 in working order. when it died, he sent me another (needs its belts checked. Runs too slow. Can anyone identify this problem with a Sony F30?

When I play a tape, everything's fine for about five seconds, but then I start getting big noise bars similar to tape creases, and then the picture goes black (but the deck is still running). I can stop, press "play" again, and the same thing happens again.

Since the motors and heads seem to be OK, I'm suspecting the pinch roller, or some other tape tension issue. Any ideas?

Gareth: I'm taking a good guess that the audio/control head is either out of alighment or worn. I had that happen on a deck I once owned. Take a good look at the counter when the picture goes black. Does it stop advancing?

Good call Madness, but I'd simply advise cleaning the Audio/CTL head before anything drastic is undertaken. Sometimes a bad tape will contaminate the mechanism in some fashion and cause no end to errors with any tape until cleaning is affected. This will puzzle you because it was working fine BEFORE the bad tape was played...

The thing that started all the problems with my SL-HF1000 was a dirty tape (or tapes). I had to clean the heads every time I played certain tapes. Overcleaning didn't damage the heads themselves, but did wear the surface of the drum. Once that happened to a high enough degree, I started having the same problem that he has. The tape would run relatively free for a few seconds to a minute or so, then start to bind up, causing those streaks and eventually it would go to black.

I just got back from my high school orchestra's trip to Boston, and found 14 Beta tapes waiting for me that my Mom got from a St. Vincent thrift store. There are 13 recordable L-750s , Scotch, Sony, Memorex and Radio Shack, and 1 prerecorded movie, "Ghost". One of the Sony L-750s is unlike any I have ever seen before. The flap at the front of the cassette is blue plastic, instead of normal black or grey, and it is in a blue slip cover labeled "Video Pops-Blank Recording Tape for Making Your Own Videos."

The SL-2400 is a mono machine. There are two basic versions out there I think where one uses a headphone type jack for audio out and the other uses the standard RCA style jack. Either would be located in the back of the VCR...

Regarding those "Video Pops" cassettes: I'm believing that Sony released a bunch of recording media around the mid 80's in all kinds of funky color schemes aimed at a younger audience. I have one or two of those beta blanks that were described, but also a bunch of "Audio Pops" music cassettes. Some of them are like transparent neon green and electric blue. Too bad they didn't make beta blanks in those exact same schemes.

Does anyone remember a company called "Le Clic?" They made funky-colored cameras mostly but had also made colored videocassettes for that other format. I mean, some of them were yellow and hot pink! But I don't think they made any betas, though (at least I've never seen any hot pink ones!). Guessing Sony tried the same thing.

blerfa! Got back from senior ski trip after a harrowing 20 hour bus ride from colorado. Let me just say John denver had it right when he wrote Rocky Mountain High. Nice to see Sean showing concern for where I was, lol. I havent been checking the page often.. Tis because of my hiatus in colorado. Sean oops thats what u meant by "total with shipping." i thought you meant the total for the snaleroid film... hmmm i didnt add the 300's shipping. prolly be $20 bux or so. hm... well i'll pay for it, but then the 300 will have to stay here until i get enough $ to ship it. Yes I found the money.. i had a pile of mail to look through when I got back. Also, betamie did as best she could to stop down and not burn her tube, and she did well. the Sony arthriticon tape didnt do so well, the video looks like B roll, and the handle fell off (losing screws like crazy). i've found that sony tapes are the best, and so are 3m and scotch. kodaks are all right, but TDKs are the absolute worst.

As for the colorful video tapes I have one of them pink Le Clics of the other format, and I think I still have a blue flapped Sony around. But as for colorful things Sony sold the HFT-7s in a few different colors as well as matching TVs. So you could have a white HFT7 and a white Sony TV or rasberry or pink or blue or black. I remember a friend had a rasberry Sony TV some years back; he wouldn't sell it to me 'cause he thought it was kinda neat. It was a 25 inch floor model with alot of jax on the back, but had no use for all them jax so to me he was wasting a good tv. Course he also had a Maggotbox or Panacronic TV with the IR remote with the builtin phone. He wouldn't part with that either.

Later. Pepse.

I just purchased a used SL-HF2100 from a video professional in California. The machine was packed professionally, and arrived to me as described. However, it did NOT include the owner's manual, and the remote control was a Sony model RMT-V102 -- which does not appear to work with the 2100. I contacted the seller, who promised to send me a copy of the owner's manual. He also asked me for the model number of the LCD touch-screen remote control that went with the SL-HF2100. Can anyone supply me with the model number of the remote control? Thank you very much.

Madness : I've just done some further experimentation, and I've discovered that the deck plays back its own recordings perfectly. (Perhaps I need to point out here that I only use Betamax to play old tapes recorded by other people, in the hope of finding old and interesting commercials, TV station logos, etc!)

One tape in particular kept throwing up noise bars and wowing, but when I recorded something over that section of the tape, playback of the newly-recorded part was perfect. Of course, at the end of the new recording, it went back to noise bars, wowing, and finally a black screen.

We are lucky to own the Sony betas. They all used the same remote code and any remote will work on any deck. All you need is a sony remote that Says "Betamax", "Beta", or has a VTR-1 switch. Easy. Something like an RMT-134 will work fine.

Radio Snack remotes run curiously with Betas. I had one remote that had at least two separate codes for Sony Beta VCRs. Each code would work for certain Betas and not certain others - like code 033 would work on an SL-HF 300 and code 034 would work on an SL-HFR60.

When I'd worn out that particular remote, I went to the Shack for a replacement and found that the new remote couldn't work the TV/VCR function. Took it back and got a Sony Universal but since then I've been able to get hold of a standard Beta remote...

Gareth, the control track affects everything. It is a very narrow strip along one edge of the entire tape. If the tapes are stored flat, not standing up, the edge will get crushed as gravity actually pull the tape against the bottom of the reels. Fully fast-forward & rewind the tape about 3x and hope for the best. Any new recordings on those old tapes will be flawless, but I assume it is the old programs you are trying to recover. Because the control track is so narrow, any slight misadjustment of the ACE head height will cause huge consequences especially on older improperly stored recordings.

Gareth: I would take a good stab here, based on the new info, that your audio/control is out of alignment. If your machine is only playing tapes that were recorded on it perfectly, that would indicate that problem. If you have another deck that you know is working perfectly, try playing the tapes made on the defective machine on it. I'll bet it'll have problems playing also (or need an extreme tracking adjustment).

Yeah, I guess we should jump in the water before we learn to swim. But on the machine I had, no amount of cleaning fixed that problem, but go for it.

I notice various exchanges regarding the merits of tapes from different manufacturers. Forget old tapes. The difference between old tapes and modern tape used in VHS housings is staggering. I've experimented, putting various tape types into Beta cassettes (it's not difficult) and the best results are from TDK HDX-Pro, closely followed by TDK EHG. Trust me, there is simply NO comparison with old tape formulations. You will think that you have just got a new, top of the line Beta machine. Years of video tape development designed to eke more and more out of the VHS system have led to better and better tape formulations. As well as picture quality, the new tapes are less stressful to machines, are less abrasive and generally work better. Forget old tapes for new recordings. Try it!

To Steve Rowley: I was very interested in your posting as it seemed to bear out my long-held view that regardless of format, tape quality is everything. I've used nothing but TDK XPPRO or XP (if I can't get the PRO) for S-VHS for a long time now, and noted that it can even render standard VHS moderately acceptably, especially as compared with the fiver-a-bucket sort of stuff that some people buy from Sainsbury's or other unlikely places. Incidentally, I've occasionally found it in the Bennett's chain for around 8 quid a time for an E240, as opposed to the 12 quid I used to pay for it in the Tottenham Court Road. From what you say it sounds like it is well worth loading into Beta shells, and I shall most certainly do so.

One question: I don't know whether you have a 950 or not, but if so have you tried the TDK on the Super Pro setting, and are the results perceptibly better?

I assume you mean tapes. If they are home recorded tape they are worth next to nothing. If they are distributed movies and such they'll be worth $1-3 each depending on what they are. If they're very rare titles they might be $15 each but That's exceedingly unlikely.

Madness/Sean/whoever :

Assuming that simply cleaning the ACE head doesn't fix the problem, does adjustment or replacement *have* to involve a test tape and oscilloscope, as suggested on the PALsite repair section? Can't I just adjust the screw on the head until the picture looks OK? Remember, I don't want to make any recordings on the deck, I only want to use it to play back old tapes.

Re Tonys HF950. The display unit will need replacing if it has lost segments, as it is not repairable. I think they used to be about £80 from Sony, so it's best if you put out a 'wanted' in case some one is breaking a faulty machine with a good display. Good luck

To Bill Stronach: I'm fairly sure that you cannot use S-VHS tape for standard Beta recordings. The tapes that I mentioned are the best ones for loading into Beta cassettes. I cannot comment on the use of S-VHS tape for Super Beta recording as I do not have a Super Beta machine. It may be worth trying it to find out. You can always put the tape back into the S-VHS shell and only lose a couple of feet of tape - nothing really. Let us know.

I have an S-VHS machine and I know for a fact that you can use S-VHS tape to record on regular VHS (and, in fact, if you fool the machine, you can go the other way, too). So you should be able to do it on Beta. The tape won't ruin it or anything. The worst that can happen is that you'll get nothing because htere isn't enogh strength to magnetize it, but it should work. S-VHS is closer to VHS than ED-Beta is to Beta so you can swap the tape around.

Thanks to both Steve and Sean. Having recently bought a DVD recorder, I'm in the process of transferring Beta, standard VHS and S-VHS - mainly jazz from the 8o's into the mid-90's - on to DVD-R, getting excellent results with mail-order unbranded discs at about 85p each! Yes, at least subjectively the Beta tapes have in the main survived considerably better than the VHS. It's just that with lots of relatively short segments I value the non-linear access and indexing facilities of DVD-R.

This is generating a substantial ammount of blank tape in all formats (I use a bulk eraser after finishing with a tape) so I will be able to experiment with just about every combination. Steve, I do in fact have some TDK EHG which I hope to liberate and load into Beta shells. I'll keep you posted.

TDK makes nice tapes. I picked up some cheap the other day, EHG I believe. It either in a bundle or in library cases, and, as nice as library cases are, they don't fit my many video holders so I got the ones in slipcases instead.

Sony made a revision to the loading system in models past the SL-HF 450 that seem to be a constant source of problems. On older models like the SL-HF 300 loading motor drove a toothed band that was kept in tension with a tension gear on a plastic bar. On the SL-HF 450 and later models the tension bar was eliminitated in favor of holding the geared band tightly against both ends of the belt train (the gear on the loading carraige mechs and the gear of the loading motor system). Over time this doesn't seem to have been as reliable as holding the belt in tension. In the end Sony went for installing a separate motor in the loading carraige and using the geared belt to let the capstan run the reel drive.

Another common loading drive problem is when one of the gears within the loading motor drive train splits and can no longer withstand any load applied to it. PALsite has a repair guide section that covers this in depth. If you have a second loading motor/gear train assembly floating around it's an easy enough fix.

Gareth...

I guess you *might* be able to adjust the ACE w/o an oscilloscope and a reference tape, but that's a tough job.

The head can be tilted on three angles and is a PITA to adjust once it got worn.

If you ever manage to get a correct picture you'll probably need to adjust the rest of the tape path and in the end you could easily go crazy trying to get everything aligned together.

No matter what, it'll be quite longer to achieve the final results without the right tools, which just increases the chances of an accident like a slipping screwdriver hitting the video heads.

I had an interesting question: What's the story w/ Magnetic Video? Was is like one of the earliest releasers of prerecorded tapes? I came across a garage sale yesterday and the guy a box of prerecorded betas for 50¢ each. Most of them are MV's and the cases have copyright dates on them from about 1977-81. But yet, I played a few of them today and they're still in very good shape for tapes that old! Mono soundtracks, but still.
