_@_¼¼ oo_[==:::::::]_ - UPS slug! Here's your Beta!

erf! - _@_¼¼ [== :::::::] rattle! rattle! ______oo - Why do you think brown is our color? It's the color of the crap we turn your stuff to...

_@_¼¼ - those f***wads at UPS managed to break my brand new SL-HFT7...

_@_¼¼ - Two of the four plastic posts holding the reel drive in place sheared off sending the reel drive to the bottom of the VCR. I had to try and screw the posts back in place and ended up having to replace the reel drive. Unfortunately the ACE head is out of whack and you can hear the low squeal of the tips of video tracks riding up into the audio head.

_@_¼¼ - it might theoretically be salvable but I filed a claim with those UPS slugs for a replacement. Funny enough, those UPS morons can't understand Canadian postal codes, had to give them the code for a US town across the border.

As for tape speeds I've preferred using the slower speeds using BIII for Beta and the LP (when available) mode for thew other format. I don't really notice too much loss of picture quality and I get more time on tapes.

Franny, I believe a company named Wega marketed a Betamax VCR in DE, a version of the C7, I think. In the US we have Sony television that use a flat version of the Trinitron tube Called the FD Trinitron Wega (but it's pronounced like you would in German, oddly enough, with the "W" making the same sound the "V" would in English...) How are those sets sold in DE, if the Wega corp. is still around?

Both UPS and the USPS could break a crowbar in a sandbox.. I'm totally shocked that my SLO-325 made it here in good condition, not even a dent or scratch! Das Snail: NEVER trust UPS to get anything across an international border. They're rather good from USA to USA but hazardous from USA to Canada. Even their online tracking system showed my stuff being in Seattle for 4 days but repeated calls turned up nothing. Seattle claimed it was already in Richmond British Columbia. Many of my Canadian customers have similar bad luck stories involving UPS international delivery. Their Canadian affiliates defile the sacred brown uniform.

Does this mean you have a RMT-135 for sale???

I have some pre-recorded tapes that the movies were originally less than 2 hours but yet they were recoded in EP. Kentucky Fried Movie, My name is Trinity, and Trinity is still my name. It is possible I might have a couple three more.

But what i did is Running Winds as the server with proxy and Firewall.......and NUX as the station

I dont use dual boot .....why?Cos' LINUX is non P&Play OS Originating from Santa Cruz Operation/UNIX/XENIX.......you need to disable Plug&play Bios ......and Enalbe it to works well with WINS

Different from Betamax you can plug anywhere.

No I didn't get the remote for this and the guy who sold it to me was able to make a short drive (from Sault Ste Marie Ontario to Sault Ste Marie Michigan) to a US shipping office to send this to me so international shipping can't be blamed for this fiasco. This thing was packed with bubble wrap and packing boogers so my guess is this took a hard belly landing to the floor somewhere that left the package more or less intact but had enough force to break two of the pins holding the reel drive in place under the cassette well assembly.

I found an old Zenith Video Director machine that plays Beta format tapes, but every time I put a pre-recorded Beta cassette in it, it just spits it back out almost immediately. I've tried different tapes and it still ejects them. Is there something else I should be doing? I set the clock and IT works fine.......

Das Snail

Elaine, it's probably spitting out tapes because the loading mechanism isn't working properly. I'm guessing you have the VR-8900W model which is a Sony SL-5000 clone. When the tape is loaded into that model it's spooled onto the head with a loading mechanism that uses a large rubber tire to wind the loading gear. There's also a sort of ribbed post that also does some winding IIRC. If the machine can't turn the loading gear it spits the tape back out. Try sanding the top crust off both just enough to roughen them up and seeing if that then has enough friction to drive the loading gear. Cleaning the loading gear of some of the accumulated crud and old lubricant can also help.

Brenda I've been told that your check arrived and as soon as I can deposit it I'll send out your package. Also OOPS picked up my busted T7 for (hopefully) refund, repair or replacement.

Regarding Leonard's post of 4-08. Here's how my VCRs stack up: VHS: NEC N901BU and Sanyo VHR-1250 record LP but not very well since they are both old mono 2-heads. As Leonard mentioned, the Sanyo has a rock-solid transport (but the weakness seems to be the idler tire) and it is an early HQ machine. RCA VJP-900, an old top-loading linear stereo portable, records LP ok (4 heads) but the screen goes black when you try to use picture search, still or slow on an LP recorded tape. My 2 Sonys, SLV-R5UC and SLV-751HF (from 1990 and 1993, respectively) have excellent picture and transport quality. As Leonard said, they came just before VHS really went to S***. But they don't record LP, they can only play it back. My 2 Penisoniques (PV-9451 (1999) and PV-VS4821 (2001) have cheap plastic lightweight transports that probably aren't going to last very long, but they do have good picture quality, both with 4 heads. They can both record LP. They have perfect freeze frame and slow motion when playing in LP, but a lot of interference in picture search.Tomorrow I'm off to the annual local electronics flea market, where last year I arrived just in time to watch some lucky B****** walk off with a Hi-Fi Betamax. Wish me luck.

Hooked up my [new] SL-HF550 to a 27" TV via video cable and got a great picture. Then I hooked it up to the A/V system [Sony receiver and 32" WEGA TV] and got a poor picture, so I turned down the sharpness to get a better picture. Not satisfied, I disconnected the VCR-to-receiver cables and reversed them. Picture cleared up, so I returned sharpness to center detent. Maybe had a poor connection. Any other explanations? Using Radio Shack cables -- not in box cheapies, but not premium quality either. Any recommendations for good cables under $25 for 6' length.

yuck! I hate having the sharpness at center "detent" (mines a electronic menu) because with my 1990 RCA and 1997 Philips-Spagnavox TVs (the 1997 one is in use every day) the picture gets all fuzzy. Is it because the caps are getting weak? Hmmm.. That poor poor GCS-50. Looks like it fell off of a truck. To Steve Wikins - I don't know of such a chip, but would such a conversion be worthwhile? Certainly with composite and probably even with S, surely the separation vital to component video would already have been lost in the combining process? You might indeed be able to produce an output recognisable to a device accepting component video, but wouldn't it actually look no better than composite or S?

Sean Meskill

Yes, Bill's right. For component (RGB) worth anything more than Y/C (S-video) or composite, it has to come from an RGB source like a videodisc player (the two laser kinds), a BetaCAM deck, type "M", or something else like that. Otherwise it's no better. stick with what you've got... if you need to connect to another input, instead use a switcher...

Well this can't be a good sign...

E-bay has eliminated the subcatagories for Beta movies http://listings.ebay.com/aw/listings/list/category2286/index.html and CED movies http://listings.ebay.com/aw/listings/list/category2287/index.html to lump them both together on one Ÿbercatagory called 'other formats' http://listings.ebay.com/pool1/listings/list/all/category41676/index.html?from=R0 that's 17 slo-loading pages long.

Somebody needs to take eBay down a notch as they're getting too full of themselves. They pack tracking cookie after tracking cookie into your hard drive (what the hell is the 'elvis' cookie for - in case I'm using the computer at Graceland?). They stretch out addresses of listings - presumably so their tracking cookies can learn your habits better....

And it's not like their service is improving. Their 'Items you might like' is a joke. Pages take forever to load - even if you have broadband. God help the poor midwesterner with a 14.4 dialup - their main consumer base. Sloppy coding has left random glitches in their site. They hide behind layers of 'help pages' and 'webforms' in case you might want to get in touch with them about a problem.

And damned if it isn't crawling with snails and such...

Well gang, I know you were all holding your breath in suspense, but I haven't been able to get near the computer until today. Yes, I did have some luck on Sunday, but not at the flea market. There was nary a Beta to be found there, but I did pick up a Panasonic PK-959 video camera with the 10-pin plug for connecting to the camera jack of VHS VCRs. It came with a Magnavox VR-8454SL01, a tiny linear stereo portable VHS that is far, far more compact than even my other portable VCR, the RCA VJP-900. It is to VHS what the SL-B5 was to Beta. It is only slightly bigger than the VHS cassette itself.

There was nary a Beta to be found there, but I did pick up a Panasonic PK-959 video camera with the 10-pin output for VHS VCRs with camera jacks. It was probably a very advanced camera in its day because it has automatic white balance and focus, plus 8X electronic zoom, as well as the manual WB, focus, zoom, iris, shutter, etc. The autofocus is however very slow to respond, and the whole lens assembly rotates around with a loud humming noise as it focuses. Strangely enough, it lacks a built-in viewfinder, so you have to use a monitor with it to see what you're shooting. The camera came with a Magnavox VR-8454SL01, a tiny linear stereo portable VHS VCR barely bigger than the VHS cassette shell. It is far more compact than even my other portable VCR, the RCA VJP-900. It is to VHS what the SL-B5 was to Beta. I hooked it up to the camera, popped in a battery, plugged a microphone into the camera (it also doesn't have a built-in microphone) and shot some test footage. It took awhile to get the hang of the manual iris and shutter adjustments, on some of the footage the colors are way off, plus I was shooting blind, so I have plenty of shots of the wall, plus I nearly tripped several times over the VCR and microphone cables. I will say this though: Using this setup sure helped me appreciate the technological marvel that is my CCD-TRV87 Hi8 camcorder, with its lighting-quick autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, 20X zoom and pop-out 2.5" LCD monitor.Anyway, after the flea market it was off to the local antique shops. One of my mom's favorite hobbies is to browse for various curiosities in antique shops. At the first one we stopped at, in Mt. Horeb, WI, while Mom looked at display cases full of Depression glass, I wandered into the "Rough Room" and there, sitting on a rickety wooden chair was...an SL-5200! (Ironically, the same model that I missed by just a few minutes at last years electronics market)Along with it was a Scotch head cleaning tape, of the type with a recorded message on it. I took it home and plugged it in, and tested out a tape in it. However, the picture was marred by quite a bit of snow, which seemed to flash on and off. Also the Beta Hi-Fi indicator was off even though I knew the tape was recorded in hi-fi. Neither adjusting the tracking nor running head cleaners (first I tried the dry-type Scotch one that came with it, then my wet-type Nortronics one) fixed the problem. Also it seemed to have a problem loading. Sometimes, when I put the tape in, the threading motor would hum for a few seconds, then it would spit the tape back out. I would just keep putting the tape back in and eventually it would catch and thread. I tried recording some test footage with the 5200, and then rewound it and played it. Now the picture looked fine, but the Hi-Fi indicator again went off as soon as I hit Play, even though it had been on during recording. Strangly, on a hi-fi recorded tape, the indicator is off during normal playback, but whenever I hit the X2 button it goes on. Then I tried playing the test footage recorded by the 5200 on a different Beta. Now the picture contained the same on-off snow that the 5200 displayed when playing a previously recorded tape! Also the hi-fi indicator on my SL-HF600 went off, indicating that no hi-fi had been recorded at all, even though the 5200's hi-fi indicator was on when it was recording. If anyone can help me figure out how to fix this machine, please let me know.BTW, kind of wierd that I should get a very small and light VCR (the Magnavox) and a very big and heavy one (The 5200 easily weighs between 20 and 30 pounds) on the same day. And a question to fellow SL-5200 owners: What does it do when you set it to RECORD, but have the tape speed switch set at the ßI PB position? Why in the first place did they design it to select ßI playback with a switch, rather than automatically through the control track pulses like most VCRs do? And a few oddities I've noticed about the model: It has front A/V inputs, the first Beta I've gotten that does, but it has no A/V inputs on the back, a shortcut that I've seen turning up on quite a few new JVC's and other VHS VCRs lately. Second, it and its predecessor the SL-5000 are the only front-loading VCRs I know of that have the cassette slot and tape mechanism on the right side of the unit. All others have it either on the left or in the center. Third, the flap on the cassette slot is two-piece. The only others I know of with this design are the two JVC industrials at my school. Fourth, on the SL-5200, as well my Sanyo and NEC Betas, the threading ring turns counterclockwise and the tape curves around the right side of the video drum. On my SL-HF600, the ring turns clockwise and the tape curves around the left side of the drum. Why this difference? Whew that was a long post!

Sorry about that. I accidentally hit something when typing and didn't realize it had posted my half-finished message. Odd I didn't get a "Duplicate Post" message.

Andy, I don't know what to say about the right-hand load... but about the playback/record interchangeability errors, I CAN say for sure that it is possibly the TRACON and FREE CAP are out of alignment massively along with some other adjustments... take it to pieces and clean the entire tape path, by hand, not with cleaning tapes... Then put in a Known Good tape (Good use for HiFi movies you don't want to see) and start fiddling 'till it looks good. One of my SLO-1400s had a problem like that and when I tweaked the FREE CAP (It may be written "CAP FREE") speed it cleared up... is this snow a very rhythmic issue? On a regular interval like you could set your watch by it? Then that is probably the issue... Same points to the HiFi working in times 2 and not normal speed since times 2 does tend to clear up many issues like non tracking and odd stuff like that... odd if you press times 2 on a deck like the 900, and are playing back and BI tape, it won't change!

To all you Americans - There is seemingly now a UK version of E-bay, but all your horror stories about your US original have rather put me off getting involved with it, even though I need some odds and ends, particularly analogue satellite gear and a decent but cheap reel-to- reel tape deck. Is it really that bad? I still don't quite understand the snail thing, can somebody explain in words of one syllable just how one of them operates and their effect on other users? Mail me direct if it would be too long and too far off topic, but I think other UK potential users might be interested.

Yes, Sean, the snow is quite rhythmic. Thanks for the advice. When I set the SL-5200's speed switch to ßI PB when playing a ßII recorded tape it has the same result as hitting the X2 button. Hitting the X2 button with ßI playback enabled has no effect, like you said.A few other items of interest: At Goodwill last week I bought a Realistic 44-1141 2-way 2-format re/winder. It has a lever to change the position of the reel hubs so it can handle both Beta and VHS tapes. Handy for somebody like me who tapes extensively in both formats. Now somebody needs to design a VCR like that. A few other neat items I saw at the flea market were: An RCA Selectavision disk player, the first one I've ever seen. A few time-lapse VCRs, and some Sony industrial VHS decks SVO-140 and SVO-1410 they were. Also somebody had a Sony MLV-1100 MTS adapter, the one that lets an early Beta hi-fi with a mono tuner and an MPX output recieve channels in stereo. I didn't buy it because at the time I had no use for it. Little did I know that in less than two hours I would have an SL-5200.

No, Bill, Snails and EBay are not off topic... Ebay is overall a very good service since it allows you to find things that are otherwise quite difficult to aquire. It's not a very good way to buy things that are easy to get unless you can ge a very nice markdown but that's rare, usually "Hot" retail items are marked up, sometimes as much as 1000% or more! (A $19 (USD) toy went for $220). Ebay has always been something of a pain in the hindquarters to use but for what you get it's still worth it. Once you get the hand of it you'll do OK for yourself. Ask any specific questions and I'm sure someone here will be glad to answer.

Now, on to those loveable snails... The Term snail comes from a disreputable dealer who buys under the name "snaling". This was misspelled as "Snailing" in someone's post so the expression "Snail" was first applied to him, and then to all disreputable dealers or those who charge high prices or simply but units to turn them around again and sell them at a huge markup... so a "Snail" is a derogatory term for a disreputable or overpriced dealer in betamax VCRs

One last question: How exactly do I "tweak" the capacitators?

They're not capacitors but potentiometers and they look like little orange-yellow screws. If you can, mark there initial position with an ultra-fine marking pen like a "Sharpie" so that if adjustment does not alleviate the condition they can be restored to the (presumed) factory settings.

If i may widen the term Trimpot (trimming potentio) ,use non conduct screwdriver/plastic type while trimming upon live/open circuit.

A metal screwdriver can make a static build by your body/material may affect/damage both side.

Beta fans unite! Tell eBay to bring back the Beta catagory for prerecorded movies (catagory 2286) as well as the CED catagory (#2287). As you may know they dropped both catagories to lump everything not VHS or DVD into an 'other formats' Ÿberghetto...

Well, being someone that has dealt with Ebay practically since its inception I must say that it is a bit of a pain at times. And yes, definately consider what a person is asking verses what it might be worth. If unsure of its worth ask us on this chat page. I decided a long time ago that bidding on "reserve price auctions" is a waste of time. If you really want that item wait, someone else will probably put up the same or similar item. My biggest complaint over the last couple years has been constantl getting booted out of the "net while in Ebay. I have found 2 browsers that are immune to that; Internet Exploder and Opera. Other than that it's pretty decent.

Later. Pepse.

Contrary to the obnoxious statements above, neither "snaling" nor his selling alter-ego, "someko" are disreputable sellers (check their eBay feedback profiles - end of story). This characterization comes from a petty, provincial, bratty, bitter cheapskate who routinely gets his ass kicked in most auctions in which he bids, who, along with the like-minded twerps here, think they should have some monopoly on the hobby due to their asocial obssession with it, and are therefore entitled to pay pennies for items for which people routinely pay dollars. Just leaf through the archives here to see this rag-tag lot of clucking hens in action as they indulge their clothesline gossip, schoolyard giggles and brain-dead ASCII sarcasm. That's what's disreputable around here.

Well the PAL Beta market is relatively snail-free and even though there were far fewer PAL Betas ever made you can still get good Beta equipment at prices at a fraction of the US market.

In the snail-infested NTSC market, a relatively few dealers have managed to corner the market for most Beta items to the point where prices have been forced unnecessarily high. The dealers snails know that there's always some sucker willing to pay their price. Exposing their dealings is legitmate consumer protection.

And if you don't think 'The Snail' isn't getting shifty in his old age check the bid history of the SL-2000 outfit he put on offer...

He used his buying ID to up the price the ultimate winner had to pay...

and got $335 for an SL-2000 outfit generally worth maybe $50 to $100...

It depends on where you are but most TV stores or department stores with an electronics section should have the cables you need. Drug stores also keep hookup cables in stock.

Yes, something to know if you have a stereo and a mono unit you'll have to get a "Y" adapter or buy the "Stereo-to-mono" cable that Radio Shack sells. If both the Beta and VHS are stereo or mono then you're OK. don't do any dubs using the RF connections, use the video and audio plugs.
