Thanks, and I didn't intend to start WW3 over the issue! I think I've got the picture re E-bay and the gastropod problem.

We have a site over here called "Loot". It isn't an auction, simply a huge sales board with a vast range of categories. It is the proverbial pain in the fundament to use, and you can die of old age waiting for the next page to come up.

Particularly since BSkyB pulled the plug on analogue on their main fixed-dish 28.3degE satellites, there has been quite a good selection of analogue satellite gear in Loot, and I guess that's where I should be looking for satellite stuff. Conversely, there have been hardly any R-to-R decks on Loot except for the occasional vintage Ferrograph or Reflectograph, and I want one for day to day use rather than a collectible antique. Presumably E-bay would be a better bet in that case? I kick myself every day for not buying a Revox which appeared several years ago in a local dealer for 225 pounds.

if anyone has a betamax machine/pal format, i need a beta tape checked out. i bought a boxload of old beta tapes on ebay, and when played on an ntsc unit, the sound is screwy, and the video will not show. suspect it may be beta, but have no way to test theory myself. the reason i am bothering with this tape, is that it contains at least one episode of an old tv series called "scarecrow and mrs. king"! if anyone can help, i can make it worth your while. Hello Everybody,

I have a Beta machine, an SL-2710, which has been in storage for 2 years. I now live in France France and recently reactivated the machine using a step-down transformer. It appeared to function well( I have several hundred beta tapes ) however, after a few hours use it has stopped accepting tapes -- ejecting them a few seconds after insertion. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what the problem might be, maybe someone else in the Beta world has encountered a similar situation......John

here we are ,the same old bug..........First you must check the switches inside the deck. Then continue with the tape path, make sure the tape have the 'clearance protocol' .Path way of the tape must be cleaned.Clean the proximity switch of the "tape presence" (platinum contact on the surface of the platter switch).Usually it solved the problemo.

A Mac Gyver talent is needed.

You know what's funny about yourSnale guy? It won't make a difference he is gone, you bunch of cheapskates. The Ebay Beta market prices will not go down due to a single seller going down. What will make the market prices go down is when DVD-R proliferates, and the former Betamax crowd converts to it. And you all probably will still be clinging onto your obsolete Beta technology, and still continue to cry about how expensive Beta is. I myself, don't look forward to Digital MPEG2 Hell video, but thats what we get.. Crappy pixelation MPEG distorter devices. Enjoy... The Beta sounds better again. Leonard.

_@_¼¼ - cheapskate? i can't think of anyone on this planet that would rather pay MORE for a product when it can be had for less if not for the interference of a few unscrupulous dealers who snag products out from under legitimate buyers (through 'sniper' bidding) and then 'flip' them for double or triple what they paid in 'auctions' with such high starts, reserves and BIN prices as to be in actuality fixed-price sales.

They are a textbook example of the old 'Trusts' and 'Syndicates' we used to read about as p[art of the bad old days of turn-of-the century Plutocrat Capitalism.

Leonard

I totally disagree. If you are wanting to purchase a Beta in unknown operating condition, then yes- cheaper is better. But if you are purchasing a Beta VCR from someone who offers a guarantee , it would seem to be worthwhile to pay more. Even so, people are willing to pay good money for Beta equipment even without a guarantee, and it shows on Ebay. No "dealer" of Betamax equipment alone is going to determine that, just look at individual sellers who are just selling off a spare Beta VCR, and you will see quickly that dealers DO NOT set the price. Those that bid on the items DO. It's quite easy, and if you want to blindly claim that a single unscrupulous seller made prices go up, you are mistaken. Good luck with your future cheapskate searches. Leonard.

Sean Meskill

To add to that, I don't think we're really "Cheapskates" when we pay several hundreds of Dollars/Euros/Pounds for an old product that you can have an equivilent of in modern form for about 50 USD... but when prices are driven up we at least have as equal a chance to complain as they have to engage in business... or capitalism won't work if people don't speak out against what they don't like and what they won't pay... It's about what WE want to do with OUR money. They're allowed to ask that much, but in turn we're allowed to complain.

Yeah I've heard of the Vectrex it's pretty cool... It could display 3D with a special imager device and it worker very well. Oh yeah the company that owns it forfeited the copyright to all the software so copying it is legal provided you make no money off of the actual software... they've basically given free reign. Nice of them, eh? People write new software for it and complile the older games into multicarts... It had analog control years before N64 and Playstation DualShock!

I actually took a look at the last 600 or so completed NTSC Betamax-related sales and maybe 150 or so of them went over the $100 mark with the high prices going to Betacam and ED Beta items (my search boolean snags a few Betacam items). An SL-HF 750 went untaken at $200US (was one of 'The Snail's' betas too). An SL-7200 went for $150US while an SL-HFR 70 went for $50US or so.

This is the search boolean I used.

http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&SortProperty=MetaHighestPriceSort&query=%28beta%2Cbetamax%2Cbetamovie%2Cbetacord%2Cbetavision%29&ebaytag1=ebayreg&ht=1&maxRecordsPerPage=100&category0=293&combine=y&st=0

If there's any lesson to be learned it's that price watching is a good idea before getting sucked into paying snail prices. Good equipment can still be had at reasonable rates but if price isn't an object you still can do better keeping away from the gastropods.

Hopefully anyone outside of our little clan reading this will gain at least some knowledge of what they should be paying...

OUCHIES!

It looks as if we may be moving soon, either to a much smaller place in or near Seoul, or back to the states (depending upon how Pat's boss decides to handle things).

What this means is... I'm going to have to get rid of damn near everything I have, as if we stay in Korea, with a smaller place, I will have no room for anything.. and if we move back to the states, I have to pare down what I have in order to be able to afford to ship what we do keep.

If this happens, I will be selling off everything I have, which includes all my ßeta gear, and over 100 brand new blank tapes. I've already posted some of my shortwave and related stuff on my website..

Stay tuned for more news and information... and don't worry, even if I DO have to get rid of everything for the time being, I WILL get more someday.. :)

I suppose these are the results of the nefarious activities of "snaling" too.

If he's responsible for the "high" prices of beta format vcr's on ebay, mind you, so is this boards favorite ass-kiss recipient, Andy "I'll Take A Stab At It" Sanchez, vcr"Cool With Sean"[email protected] (probably the biggest gouger on the board), redding1 (so long as you don't find some flimsy proof he's actually making any money on ebay) and even whatever one of you some months back offered a moldy HF1000 for about a grand along with utility grade used tapes for $2.50 a pop.

Your memory is as bad as your attitude.

It was me that offered my SL-HF1000 several months back, then decided to keep it for a while. The tapes (I still have nearly all of them) are not used, nor utility grade. They are new, still in the wrappers. Most are Maxell, some are Sony (some of those UHG)and some Fuji. And I offered the lot for $900. With over 100 tapes averaging between $3 and $5 each, I thought, and still think, that it was a hell of a bargain compared especially to ebay prices. I have seen several SL-HF1000's go for that much by themselves recently, even one or two without a remote.

Wow, this chat-board just sinks further and further. I am amazed it has not been taken offline again. Can't people get off their petty trips? I am guilty of this , as I had called you all cheapskates, and I am done with poking around about it. I was just trying to make a point, which I am sure got nowhere, with the way things are around here. I thought that this was a hobby, Betamax. Not a bunch of B.S. about prices or repair people or Ebay sellers, etc. Get over it, is it that hard to do? Leonard.

I agree and then I do not agree. We engage in some discussion of certain sellers and so on... and while it may seem spiteful look at what Snaling did... Illegal bidding; don't you think that was worth a warning? As to talking about prices, if we talk about a thing, surely we're allowed to talk about what we think they're worth and what we're willing to pay, if only to prevent some newcommer from paying too much. In all honesty, though, when someone shows up here simply to be at odds with whatever is going on, I simply cannot respect him or his oppinions.

The point is that you were asking top dollar for a unit that was not in top condition. The remote - a good 20% or more of the value of the 750's and 1000's, was corroded, beyond repair, iirc. Even assuming the tapes were worth $300, which they would not be to anyone buying a superBeta unit (and, not even new BCT20's go for $2.50/ea in that quantity), $600 for a 1000 with essentially no remote is as much or more than any similar unit I have seen recently on eBay, even in cherry condition with a remote.

But somehow, it's a problem if anyone else asks for that kind of money, except amongst you, the self anointed "few."

And no one has shown "snaling" or "someko" to have engaged in anything illegal, so you can shove your outrage over personal attacks in that ever growing (I hope it's latex) pouch of hypocrisy that many around here seem never to be without.

And it was that sissy-ass snail crap that got this board shut down in the first place. They even told you not to do it again as condition of reopening the board, and you went at again from word one. If you don't want your idyllic little coffee klatch further upset, you all should take a stab at the Golden Rule.

I also found these e-Bay auctions quite amusing, the top one went off at $112.00 and was shipped from Cananda to the U.S in 3 days as the feedback attests. The very next day, the Beta was re-listed with the same pictures. Guess the guy didn't get his price the first time so he shill bid out of the auction. Did much better the second time and he even got a nice, phony feedback out of the deal. This sort of thing makes me wonder why I joined e-Bay. Are these sort of phony auctions the rule or the exception

Why does everyone complain about school cafeteria food? I like it! Certain things don't come out good... But overall it's good. I like hospital food too, lol!! Heheh.. Now, I want to know what the head life expectancy usually is on a Betamie. I was just asking because I had a near death experience with mine.

These lies you continually perpetrate against Snaling, are complete fabrications! It is the Zionist propaganda which has made you crazy. Snaling, Allah be praised, never has engaged in unfair selling practices! Never! I triple guarantee you! He has never engaged in shill bidding, if he had, which he has not, he would be an infidel and his stomach will roast in Hell. The fabrications of Al-Jazeera against this benevolent and fair seller are LIES! Nothing but LIES perpetrated by the American press. Do not believe them! The Zionists at eBay are merely persecuting those who are right and fair, and we will hit them with old shoes.

Cotton swabs will burn in hell. Allah has condemned them. Using them is stupid. All cotton swabs are stupid (dramatic pause) and they are condemned.

Sony Betamax SL8000 -UB. Where is the best place to gauge the interest in these machines? Contemplating selling ours, alternatively keeping hold of it for another 20 years for the grandchildren! Also, any ideas on the current value of this machine?

The Betamaxes are secure. There is no VHS attack. Truly I can say that there are no VHS anywhere. The Betamax - praise Akio Morita - will reign for a thousand years. Also they are commiting suicide - if there were VHS which there are not. Lies!

A question; In the shape of the SLHF100, Beta Hi-Fi stereo appeared in the UK at least 5 years before NICAM stereo broadcast TV. During that interregnum, the main source of stereo was the "simulcast", with stereo radio providing the sound in sync with broadcast TV. The 100 and its big brother the 950 had a source switch enabling off-air video reception along with stereo AV input from an FM radio receiver. The main programming was classical music, although I remember a preposterous concert with the Grateful Dead from Berlin! There was the obvious disadvantage of having to synchronise radio - usually our national Radio 3 channel - and TV for some time in the same evening, so simul broadcasts were not an everyday occurrence.

NICAM was never implemented on any Beta machine sold in the UK. Unfortunately NICAM VHS machines came on the market around 1989, driving another undeserved nail in the better format's coffin. NICAM conversion ideas have occasionally appeared on this site. Was there anything resembling the simul scenario in the US? Was the simul feature installed on any NTSC machines? I know you don't use NICAM, but what was the history of TV stereo in the US, and was it implemented on any domestic Beta machines?

Bill,

Well, we did have similar simulcast type occurances in the two years or so between the advent of ßeta Hi-Fi and the BTSC stereo system. These were not all that frequent, but were more easily handled than those on your side of the pond. Many such were concerts, and were carried by Public Television (PBS) and the simulcast was handled by the co-affiliated local PBS radio station. Other shows were done on commercial television, and simulcast audio handled by a contracted local commercial radio station.

As for Hi-Fi VCR's, yes, ours also have the simulcast position on the input switch. I've used it often myself. In some cases, I use it to have the program audio on the linear track, while having another audio source on the Hi-Fi track.

Here in Korea, where I live currently, they use NICAM stereo. This gets a bit confusing since a large number of televisions here are sold to Americans (G.I.'s, DOD civilians, embassy personnel), and use the BTSC stereo system. While those sold on the Korean economy (same brands, Samsung, Daewoo, etc. and same layouts) have NICAM stereo. So the U.S. market sets cannot receive the Korean stereo signals, and the cable systems and over-the-air television channels from the military bases beamed at Americans don't have ANY stereo audio. (the Koreans use the NTSC/System M/American channelization, identical other than stereo audio to N. America).

Le'see... Over here we have some programs that are STILL simulcast in stereo. We also have a system called MTS for Multichannel Television Sound which does the same thing as NICAM, for all intents and purposes. What we could get were these MTS adapters that let you do the same as the Simulcast switch... Most of the Decks (Even my SL-HF-900 that proudly touts "Stereocast" on the label) have a "Line audio" mode that takes the line audio feed and the tuned video feed. The MTS adapters (NOT to be confused with MPX adapters which stood for multiplex and was something else entirely... Brenda can explain it better, I would guess, and this post is long enough) would plug into the appropriate deck and decode the multichannel sound and pass it to the line level inputs. They could also drive speakers and some other stuff too... DasImperator has one.

Hi All

I am very interested in purchasing a late model front loading Sony Betamax, to replace my much loved SL-F30 which has recently packed up. Another F30 would be preferable as I have my own to use for parts but any other Sony would be considered. I live in the West Midlands of England

Hmmm.. that looks like a cousin of the American SL-20 and the like... Good solid machines. If the 8.50 GBP is the total for shipping, that's a nice deal (I'm not familliar withe the exact meaning of "P&P") but the price is getting on a bit... anyway but it does have the remote.
