Greetz! Yesterday, I lugged me home yet another SL-5200 "Big Beastie" from a flea market. Funny, how they old seem to have that same problem of getting "tired." Yannow, playing the tapes too slow. Fixed two already, what's another? *g* But does anyone have that site, again, to buy a set of belts? I had it, but can't remember the URL. Figure I'll replace them and lube the capstain motor. If that doesn't do it, then replace all the electrolytics on the SS-18. Worked for the other two. ;)

Hey Sean, can you tell me where inside the SL-5200 I might find the "CAP FREE" adjustment? It's a big-@$$ed unit with a lot of circut boards inside, and I don't want to have to rip it all apart because I don't trust myself to get it back together again. I had a heck of a time just getting the circut board and RF shield back on after I removed them to get to the threading mechanism. They are a very tight fit. Madness, you've fixed SL-5200s? Do you know anything about this? Also, have you ever tried putting one in RECORD mode, but then setting the tape speed switch to ßI PB? If so, what does it do? Bill, regarding US broadcast stereo, I think MTS came out around '84 or 85', a few years after Beta hi-fi. So the first few Beta hi-fi units have mono tuners, including the SL-5200 and NEC VC-739E, both of which I have, plus the SL-2700, 2710 and SL-HF300. My SL-HF600, which came out in '85, has a stereo tuner with the "STEREOCAST" label and SAP reception. The SL-HF600 and my SLV-R5UC S-VHS both have a mode for recording the audio from the line inputs and the video from the tuner, called "Line Audio" on the HF600 and "SIMULCAST" on the R5.

If the SL-5200 shares much with the SL-5000 it's based on, the CAP FREE and internal TRACON pots are on the same board that held the external tracking control knob. Hmmm... I need another pack of Morleys...

If the 5200 is the same as the SLO-1800 it is also on the same board as the tracking control knob. I don't have the actual 5200 so I don't know if it records BI but it's worth a shot.

Leonard: This chat page has vitality and humor, unlike the other format chat pages which read like classified ads. "Hello I've got a Grundig V2000 machine in the Manchester area, regards." Or, they're filled with the depressing "Hi, I've got a treasured family videotape that I can't play anymore because I left my Video 2x4 sitting in the garden shed for 20 years."

Yes, this page goes off-topic. I only post about 2-3 times a month. But I read it everyday and always find interesting and helpful links to Beta or vintage video related subjects. Betamax has so much more retro/pop culture associated with it than other formats. This should be considered when comparing it to other formats.

Thanks, Jesse.

Thanks everyone for your responses on TV stereo, very informative. How does the BTSC system work, is it a relative of NICAM (Near Instantaneous Companded Audio Matrix)? The only other system I have any knowledge of is the German 2-channel FM system - I think the official name is "Planar". My old Loewe multistandard TV had a tuner for that, but my new Thomson multistandard doesn't seem to have one, although I have to say that the sunspots haven't got me much terrestrial German reception since I got the Thomson, so I haven't had much chance to test. Perhaps Franny can tell me whether or not it's still in use, what with Belgium and the Netherlands going over to NICAM, also whether or not it was implemented on any Beta machines for the German market?

I still use the simul feature to inject stereo to my Betas from a VHS machine. It's not ideal, particularly if you do any timer recording, but the overall quality is worth the necessary messing about.

We never had any external converters of any kind here.

There are some TV to VGA converter/Tuner whilst output can be used as a Nicam/MTS.We can enjoy TV signals at our VGA monitor while recording Favorites Nicam AV sys to the Beta.Costs 'Round 60 bux or less.

I'll post the URL if there is........

The other hand, upgrading Audio block in our Beta is really complicated.I'm not sure if a plug in module available at the market.....butI get the idea of moving the Nicam decorder of the VHS to Beta wich is beyond my expectation to work out.

As the expert would see, it is possible to carry out.

I'll answer AndyW's question first... nope, I mean BTSC (Broadcast Television Systems Committee), also knows as MTS (but on the transmitting end it's always referred to as BTSC).

BTSC (MTS) audio is a system nearly identical to the FM stereo multiplex system for radio, the main difference is in the frequencies used for the pilot, L-R subcarrier and SAP (Second Audio Program), who's analog in FM radio is the SCA (Subsidiary Communications Authorization) which is used to carry separate programming such as Muzak or programming for the blind.

Where FM MPX uses a pilot of 19 KHz, BTSC uses one of 15.736 KHz (identical to, and phase-locked with, the horizontal scan rate of the video). L-R subcarrier for FM-MPX is 38 KHz, exactly twice the pilot frequency. The same relationship holds with BTSC sound. The two part ways with SAP/SCA, in that SCA's use various frequencies (mainly, IIRC, 76 and 92 KHz), while SAP uses a frequency which is an exact multiple of the pilot frequency. This is all done in order to minimize interference to the audio from the high-energy scan circuitry within the television receiver.

The other real difference between FM-MPX and BTSC is that BTSC uses a built-in noise reduction system (DBX).

Hope this helps.. sometimes I can get a little over-technical.. comes from years as a technician and then a radio broadcast engineer.. :)

I think I will list that SL-HF2100 on Ebay and sell it for $2k or so. That actually is the better thing to do than just hurl it off a cliff, as I know you nice , supersmart Einsteinpeople here would detest that completely, and fully. Only a half wit such as I would do that, sell a Beta on Ebay instead of offer to you here on this "chat" forum for $10.00. And , I'll even jump off a cliff afterwards. But, the landing may be hard with that parachute I'd be wearing. Have a nice night, K-Mart shoppers. Now, the less we can talk about beta the better it gets. Gotta love it. Leonard.

Has anyone else noticed the Betamax in the movie "The Ring?"

In the second farmhouse scene, the female protagonist uses a Sony SL-5800 to view a disturbing interview taped at a mental institution (not the actual "death tape.") The distinctive row of preset channel buttons is visible, along with the Sony logo, and the row of "piano key" switches. The "BetaScan" sticker is still on the tape door.

In the movie, the picture rendered on the Beta tape was crystal-clear, unlike the fuzzy VHS tape that kills everyone who views it. If this doesn't make any sense, see the movie. I highly recommend it.

Survey...

When were you introduced to Beta ?? Was it when the format was alive an well, i.e. before 1986, or was it after that, once the product became "marginal" ??

For my part, I started this as a hobby in 1989 when I was given a broken VCR4650 (Sanyo) which I fixed and used as a second VCR to copy VHS rentals.

I remember, back in about 1983 when my family bought its first VCR, recommending my parents to buy the VHS unit as it was way more popular. In my area there were about 5 video stores, 4 rented VHS and only one rented beta.

It was cool back in early 90s as many people still owned beta VCRs but already switched to VHS so they would part with their betas for almost nothing. This way I got both a SL-2710B and a SL-HFR70 in perfect confition for free !

Today, those who still own their Betas after all these years know what they are worth and most won't part with them.

However, I was able to put my hands on a SL-7200 last year with about 20 tapes, some of which were the original K -30 and K-60 tapes, all the lot for 50 bux. Alas, the 7200 got its head almost collapse into powder when I tried to clean them, so it went to trash.

My first experience with ßeta was as a TV technician in 1976. Part of my job was assisting in delivery and installation of console televisions and stereos. I was fortunate enough to be involved in the delivery of the first Sony TV/ßeta combination set in the Salt Lake Valley. As a wide-eyed 22 year old kid who had never seen a home video recorder before (I HAD seen old reel to reel video recorders), I was amazed at the simplicity of use and the relatively good quality.

Reading up: Jesse, yes, I did see an old Betamax in "The Ring." I had the DVD so it was nice to zoom in and get a good look. The movie even went over to beta for me. Ironic isn't it? Everyone who watches the VHS kicks the bucket, eh? ;)

Well I don't know. The picture from my professional VHS machines is *Passable*. However the format has produced some of the worst pictures I've seen too... say, has anyone ever seen that Zenith machine that loads the tape sideways??? i.e. you put it in the long way?

Above is another Strange beta auction .. Second one in 2 weeks I found that was sold and was relisted with same machine and exact used Beta tapes ..LOL

KELLY From Betalore Quick topic I also found the above e-Bay auctions quite amusing, the top one went off at $112.00 and was shipped from Cananda to the U.S in 3 days as the feedback attests. The very next day, the Beta was re-listed with the same pictures. Guess the guy didn't get his price the first time so he shill bid out of the auction. Did much better the second time and he even got a nice, phony feedback out of the deal. This sort of thing makes me wonder why I joined e-Bay. Are these sort of phony auctions the rule or the exception

I was introduced to Beta because my parents bought an SL-HF600 in 1985, the year before it was born. We didn't bother getting a VHS deck until Christmas 1993. I didn't really start to get into Beta as a hobby until my grandparents gave me their Sanyo 4030 when they moved to an apartment. I now have added a Sony 5200, a Sanyo 4650, a Sanyo 4027, and an NEC 739E to my collection. Speaking of Betas in movies, one of the movies on one of the Beta tapes I got at a Goodwill recently was "Legend of Billie Jean". In this one scene where they shoot the video message, they use a Betamovie camera (not to do the shooting, but in the movie). I think it's a BMC-110, but I can't quite tell.

I can understand why you'd like a SL-HF2100, but a 2000 ??? Looks, perhaps ?

The 2000 isn't a BAD machine per say like the SL-8600 or the one Sanyo whose defining characteristic was the fact that it ate tapes... but it's just a rediculously overvalued machine... Basic BII/BIII SuperBeta HiFi... fair construction, fair functionality, (Vulnerable to macrovision) etc... but they regularly go for MORE than even turbocharged SL-HF-900s, EDW-30Fs, and SL-HF-750s which are all SUPERIOR machines of excellent construction and a remarkable feature set...

Well, the 2000 lacks SFX heads. You get half a screen of snow when scanning, forget slow motion and still picture. The poor two heads its got in there are known to wear quite quickly.

Overall this VCR has the same functionality as your average recent VHS but it sold for four times the price because it is Beta.

Anyways, there are many other beta models I'd prefer to own instead of this one. I already got a 2000 anyways ;-)

Thay guy probably had a couple of the same item and just reuses the pictures - note how he claims "Don't need no fancy pictures to sell my items..."

Apparently don't 'need no' working knowledge of grammar....

Ah yes that silly "Souther Advantage" person... I think they've been trying to move the same SL-HF-2000 for quite some time but simply can't since it's got an insane reserve on it... I wonder if they've EVER sold one...

Responding to two posts: I can't recall my absolute first experience with Beta. My grandmother worked for Radio Shack in the early 1980's, where she was able to cheaply purchase a Zenith "Video Director" (Sony SL-5000 O.E.M.) Whenever I visited my grandparents, I always chose to watch a beta movie over a VHS. The size of the cassette, the funny little "cassette is inside" flag, the corded remote...awesome. Beta came into my consciousness naturally, without a recognizable "first experience." She still has it, and it needs new capacitors.

Oh, and I believe Jeff Goldblum used a Super Betamovie in "The Fly."

I see this message to be addressed to me but I don't understand indonesian (or whatever language it is). Please flame me in english if this is what you want.

That said, I don't think we should strictly stick to technical discussion, but I don't think your browser is of any interest to anyone in here neither.

This is nothing but an opinion.

Hi Franny, yea I guess that could explain it. Too lazy to take different pics. If I was a bidder though, I would sure like to know that what I bid on was what was actually shown. He should make a disclaimer. Seems rather shady. Do you know if this is done all the time? I want to bid on one, should I ask the seller if the picture is of the actual unit being sold? I really want to see what I'm bidding on... thanks, Tom.

Pro 8mm came today... and it came with a second RM-E100V. Anybody want to buy it? It works with Control-L decks like the SL-HF-1000, SL-HF-2100, EDV-9500, and also I think the SL-HF-750 and GCS-50. I have two and ovbiosly don't need it. Make an offer.

I need some help from Betaphiles in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Anyone who lives in toronto i would greatly appreciate it if you could go find a store that still apparently sells betas (VCRS tapes accesores). It is located on Queen st. and Spadina. As far as I know when you see the steve's music store on queen, turn left and you'll be on spadina now. about 3 or 4 stores down there should be an old audio visual store. if someone could check the AV stores in that area, particularly where I just pointed out, and get me the name of the store that sells betas. they won't be advertised, but ask the owner. ive been told that the betamax stuff is located at the back left hand corner. anyone who can get the name and phone number of this place it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. please e-mail me with a name and number if you get it. thanks :)

Jesse, "The Legend of Billie Jean" is about a Texas girl who runs away from home after being accused of shooting a storekeeper. I don't recall a dead guy in a wheelchair, but it's been awhile since I've watched it.

Nope, no dead guy in a wheelchair.. just a big bonfire at the end of the movie (as the shopkeeper's beachfront store goes up in flames, after he was exposed for what he was)
