*sigh....... I keep my off topic posts short! Anyways... Ugh! I can't remember more than bits and pieces of Billie Jean. Ok, ok, do at one point they hide out in a miniature golf course? And, she is in the front seat of a (Trans Am?) and a cop stops them; and she does a miraculous disappearing act? Anyways... Why does a TV get reduced in sharpness if you don't use it for like a year? It's the caps, right? Or is it the picture tube itself?

I ask because my RCA console from 1992 was amazingly sharp and clear, and I haven't used it since like Dec 2001. Plugged it in and watched All My Children with my SL-HF300 and the picture looked like VHS. I think its convergence has drifted a teensy bit in the time that it's sat there. How long would it take for the caps to reform? And proof that some things only get better with age; my 9" colour Dec 1976 Trinitron tv has a BEAUTIFUL picture! Turned it on yesterday and was amazed! Also, what would it cost to have these TVs adjusted to broadcast spec? Or is it possible?

i got my 9" TV also but it's not really TV it's Olivetti DSM2907,shape is similar to Broadcast Monitor, I just plug my EXT VGA TUNER and there's my new TV.

Speaking of sharpness, maybe Deagussing would make pixelate better. If there's no Degauss function 'External' degauss Clamp can do such phenomenon.

After that, here we are messing around with the machine. I'm not recomending it if you dont have experience/knowledge whatsoever. TV tube saves very large amount of electric potential, even you dont plug the power cord in Line .Discharge first.....there's a small trimpot around the tube end,one of them will adjust the color clarity/(gaps beetwen pixel)Be carefull A 10.000 volts live voltage around the tube if you plug the cord. Trimpot position may vary to TV brand.(((I'm sure this page will be full of text i'm sure everybody dont like it)))

A nice treat for Betamax Videographer club members...

Somebody took that nasty message Madonna recorded and slipped into fake mp3s of songs off her latest album (and released it into P2P servers like Kazaa to foil would-be song sharers) and turned it into... well a techno recording in it's own right.

OLIVE, seems to be a whole ring of them in Canada, Betagoodsnail seems to be in the circle, but I cant seem to connect the dots. They all seem to bid each other auction up or put a 0 with glasses to bid at the end if the auction doesn't meet the price they want. Then the next day the same auction is back on again .. Very strange.. The more I learn about buying betas on ebay the worse it gets.. 8-)....Tom

My theory (not to disparage any elses or anything) is that we can waste time lamenting how bad these people are or we can work around them and warn people about them... and not buy from them. What we want, we'll find at reasonable prices or take our business elsewhere... there are all kinds of people on Ebay, some are bad and some are not, like the time I bought an SL-2001, RM-E100V, AC-220, and cables for $26, or an SL-HF-900 for $80, or so on...

Hello all. I am thinking of buying a decent (hopefull) NTSC Beta for use in England. Its getting very hard to find beta with all the bells and whistles etc here as they only made one - SLHF950. As my Sony NX1 TV can accept PAL and NTSC picture I was wondering If I could use the NTSC machine to back up my region1 DVDs and NTSC laserdiscs - would there be any other way of using the machine? - also any ideas on a decent one - I am checking ebay (those sellers willing to post to UK) and the SLHF900 looks a decent machine.

Sean Meskill

[email protected]

SL-HF-900 is a very nice machine, it's also the most common machine in the world so it's a good choice from a parts standpoint. You can use to take an NTSC signal... I suppose you can also use it with a standards converter of any sort to take PAL video if that works but I'm not sure... Also I think standards converters that really work are expensive... SL-HF-900 can also be turbocharged (BIs recording) if you know something about electronics...

It's funny to note that a high end (and therefore expensive) machine (HF900) was the most popular among beta users while VHS finally won a war because of cheapness.

This tells long about how beta enthusiasts prefer quality products !

Yes, Boby I have found that "Sharpness" pot on the end of my other Trinitron (August 1980 model KV-1513) I have successfully adjusted its sharpness, but now when it recieves a lot of moving video noise (like, you know the lines that result when you press fast forward or reverse?), it will quit. It turns off the picture tube and audio [over-voltage protection?], but the channel lights stay on (one of the push-button VhF tuners). I don't care about that, it works very nicely otherwise. My chief complaint is that the picture has a red tint (black is a reddish brown). I am not a TV technician either, but I really need to know how much it will cost to have these TVs, or if it is possible, to have them adjusted to broadcast or factory specifications. For example, I want the color settings restored on the KV-1215 12" Trinitron. Because I stupidly messed with the drive pots, I have to turn the tint all the way to green, and color all the way to the max level and brightness too, just to have a normal picture.

NB to Jesse

If you want the TV to be a broadcast Qty i'm affraid its not possible.Decoding Chipset is differ to those conventionals TV. Broadcast TV seems to have a same "pixelation" as high end VGA monitor(thousands of pixs) but not to conventinals TV(only hundreds of pixs). This apply to the tubes also. If you insist you can vandalise the Tube and the PCB block from VGA monitor,i can't imagine that furthermore.

Last shop I worked in charged right at $50 an hour (or part thereof) for any repairs. They charged this even just to take the back off the set to change a fuse. I'm afraid you will find most shops work pretty much the same.. some even charge extra if the customer has "repaired" the set before them. Wish I was there, that's all of a 10 minute repair, including knocking in the convergence.

Hi Betafans!!

I am having little luck in locating a working betamax. I have now purchased 3 machines, a working C7 a SLHF100 and a F30 (like what my momand dad had in 1984). In all cases, they have all been duds. I have been told they were in good condition to find that all were duds, with no operation at all C7 due to internal circuit burnout, the SLHF100 had no tape transport and the F30 was broken due to the seller taking cash off me on ebay for post and packing and he sent it to me in a half open motheaten cornflake box. The machine rattled and was badly damaged when I got it. It's obvious there is a lot of rubbish out there betafans, I wish I could find a good un (as we say in the Black Country in England!!) If anyone can help, get in touch Daniel

I've got a Sony Betamax 5800 w/remote and a couple of dozen pre-recorded movies on tape. And I want to sell. Is there any market out there for such a unit? What I expect to get?

Hello Beta-philes...I've got a working Sony Betamax 5800 Hi-Fi w/remote and a dozen or so store-bought movies in Beta. Is there a market out there? I want to sell! Do you want to buy?

Reading this site, I came to the conclusion, that you all jerk off to the beat of a beta vcr jamming up its tape.

Let that be a lesson to would-be snails. Cross the line and we'll salt you.

And to Skippy or whatever you're calling yourself these days. If you don't like what people have to say on this page there's no need for snotty remarks, you can always go to some other page. Or better yet go outside and play in traffic or something...

While you're out there go get me another carton of Morleys...

Hey Topher... are you mistaken as to what model you're selling? There's an SL-5800 that's a good machine but it's not a HiFi... The 5800 is worth a bit, and perhaps 30 % of its value is in the accessories. Do you have the remote? the Changer? The dust cover? What else? But the SL-5800 is NOT a HiFi.

You guys are so petty and tripe, oh gee seller re-cycles pictures so what. This one lives in Canada, he had two bidders who signed on the same day from Canada bid the unit up higher. Oh, that's terrible. Illegal, immoral, etc. Damnit. Gee , I wish I could be like you guys on this forum , with absolutely nothing to do except comb through an auction site to pick out sellers and so on. Gee, if I could do that maybe I'd be like you. But I am not, and am thankful for it. I am just dumb and that is it. The end of the story. Ok, I gotta go now, time to change the tape in my SL-HF2100 (which has not been thrown off a cliff yet). Gee Leonard but I think you're comming to a rather rash conclusion about us that this is all we do... I for one do quite a bit more than this, but, I guess, I can understand how you could jump to that conclusion since this is all you see of us. But It's still a bad conclusion. Now I'm sure we can all agree that Ebay is full of people ready to rip you off... Just like the rest of the world. If we seem a bit spiteful in pointing out these people it's just because we're sick of them.

You must have excellent eyesstalk resolution Olivesnail. That listing makes no mention of the recorder being a Japanese SL-F1 but if you look carefully at the TT -F1 tuner you'll see that the channel selector panel had only ten buttons like the PAL F-1. Ever think about a photo interpreter job with the Satellite Reconnaissance Office?

This last intervention above just confirms Kris' comments.

Pretty soon we will find this board down just as it went a few months ago. Only this time, it won't reopen. That's what I think is going to happen.

On second thought.

Got a question for everyone with a reasonable open mind.

If you walk into a used car lot dealership, lookking for a used vehicle. How much mark up do you think he is making out of it? Lets say, we dont know " of couse we dont! ", then if he is a reputable dealer, he would make sure that the car he is selling to you is road worthy. He will also give you some type of warranty " I hope ". Or......

You can go through the private sales , through your local newspaper. Surely, you can find a lower price vehicle, probably dont have to pay new car taxes etc... In the end, you may or may not get a better deal.

If you purchase the car through a private deal, you are not getting any sort of warranty at all, and you are on your own. In fact, most business do give you a 14 days money back guarantee or at the very least no " DOA ". If you purchase the vehicle privatedly, the seller doesnt have to give you a single cent in return for the broken vehicle.

Now, lets go back to my first paragraph. Just so I can drive the point across. I am for or against complaining ebay prices and policies. But, as you all know. Most sellers get their ID rating from other customers. Most of the buyers do have more than " 0 " ratings, so they know what they are getting into. The sellers must be registered via ebay and if they take paypal, they need to have a CC in order to get an account. Most seller will at least give you a " NO DOA" guarantee, others will at least exchange, return your money, or repair the unit for you. I have seen several sellers offering 1 month or up warranty on the items being sold. If I was a newbie, with " 0 " experience in purchasing an item through ebay, I would rather pay a lot more for a VCR that most people DO NOT KNOW HOW TO WORK ON THEM TO GET THEM IN OPERATIONAL status, than trying to find a " $50.00" deal, and hope, pray to allah, or whoever your god is, that the beast is going to work when you press the play button.

Paypal also offers you some type of protection for your purchase, so does ebay. If the item doesnt arrive as described per the transaction, then simply file a complain and go from there. The other thing you can do as mentioned earlier, is buy something cheap and hope you can fix it. I can assure you if the seller claims " I dont have a single tape to test this thing out ", thats a given. This thing doesnt work.

In concluion. If the seller sales his item at a higher than given price, this might be due to the fact that he / she has a higher cost of operating. Eg. Warranty offers, returns, exchanges, shipping costs, repairs of each unit prior to the sale etc. Same idea as buying a new Digital camera on ebay for 30 % less than what it would cost to walk into a local electronic store. The ebay seller doesnt have the extra fees incurred such as employees, rental, lease etc.. I am sure you get the point. so....... you are not being forced with a gun on your forehead to pay the high prices at your local store, you have the choice to go whereever you want to purchase your new camera.

Enough for now. Just wanted to express my ideas on this subject.
