Hi. I've got a lot of old u-matic equipment which is being cleared. This includes: Sony VO-5800PS, 5850P, VO-2630, VO-2630, VO-4800PS, RM-580, RM-440, DXC-M3. And lots of tapes.

Is anybody interested? I can deliver in London, or post in the UK for £35. Otherwise it will all have to go to the rubbish dump in the next few weeks (sorry!).

Hey, just use a time base corrector and A/D converter and some basic video program like Sony Vegas. I don't know exactly which unit you use but it probably has a composite out which the TBC should accept, if you don't have a TBC just go into the A/D converter (I use a Datavideo DAC200). Let me know if that works.

Hi,i am looking for a player (dont really need record, wont mind it though) capable of hi lo band + sp.i know some models are pal ntsc, so is there a pal ntsc hi lo sp combo model?if not, i wont mind 1 pal 1 ntsc deck. must be in excellent condition, for digitizing aging tapes. Thanks

Hi Edo,In short the answer is no. There are a few machines in the VO-7 series that will play PAL & NTSC, but only low-band. The VO-9800 & 9850 will play low, hi & SP but only in PAL or NTSC depending on the model.

Rod, thanks for the answer. So my best bet would be 2 v9xxx machines? Does these decks have component output? I am transferring many Umatic Masters for archiving on LTO4 tapes, so the deck must be able to give good picture, and handle over 400 drum hours.Any ideas where i might find good, reliable decks (I'm in Israel, so probably would have to 'blindly' ship one over)?

Rod

[email protected]

Hi Edo. I don't think there are any U-matic machines with component output, it's all composite. The VO-9*** series do have a 'dub' output, which is basically the same as a S-Video output but you'll have to make up an adaptor as they have different plugs.

The only suggestion I would have to find one in or near Israel is to check with television stations or production houses. Most will have gone over the digital by now and may have some gathering dust in a corner somewhere. A good condition machine shouldn't cost you much more than $400, or at least that is the going rate in Australia ;-)They all show drum hours in the menu so check for those details. When used in a professional environment with good quality tapes, you should get about 1500 hours from the heads. The bigger problem with these ageing machines are the loading mechanisms, make sure the load / unload a tape without too much noise, an indicator it may fail soon.Hope this helps.

Rod, many thanks again.I'll have a look around, but since the TV was government owned back in the umatic days, they have weird regulations and bureaucracy (they would probably have to have a bid for 'purchasing used production equipment' and buyer would have to buy the whole lot or something).Being a person of high technical skill, but no knowledge of the umatic's innards, can the deck be reconditioned 'at home' (i know many of the old betamax vcrs are easily serviced)?how difficult can it be to replace the heads?on the same subject, is there an online site where i can get spares? or is it better to get another deck for parts? can new heads be obtained nowadays?

Hi Edo!

The umatic are quite nice to service - the parts are big and not very cludged inside, there is quite good access to everything. Mechanics are quite obvious and control logics easy to figure out. The drum replacement shouldn't be any problem. The drum itself is a problem. You can buy it, but it will cost more than a secon machine. Or two.

Hi all! Nice to be in a forum where I don't have to justify why I like the look of Tube cameras!

I have access to a high band U-matic PAL SP recorder, but I'm desperately looking for a U-matic camera and power supply. To rent or purchase in London. Does anyone have a camera or know of anywhere I could acquire one? Everything I've found online seems to be NTSC or won't ship out of another country.

Hi Lilah!

You can use any camera with composite output with U-Matic recorder. If you are looking for a tube camera have a look at german e-bay, you will find there few ones, in PAL usually. For example: http://cgi.ebay.de/JVC-Profikamera-KY-1900E_W0QQitemZ180286798741QQihZ008QQcategoryZ21165QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

or

http://cgi.ebay.de/UNICAM-IKEGAMI-HL-95-SCHULTERKAMERA_W0QQitemZ360084591813QQihZ023QQcategoryZ21165QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If you are going to use a portapack recorder you will need also a 14-PIN camera cable that allows to control the recorder from camera. For studio use a standard BNC coaxial cable is enough. I've two JVC KY-1900E and as it's not a very good camera as compared to Ikes but in good lighting conditions and with properly adjusted registration it gives quite nice picture, especially the halftone reprodustion is really good. It can use any 12V power supply with 4-PIN XLR cable.

The analog video technology has became oblotete. That's fact. But from other hand there are still people like us interested in it - for various reasons. And getting information about this technology becomes harder and harder to find. I've set upa bulletin board at memebot.com related to analog video at:

http://threequarterinch.memebot.com

The idea is to be not restricted to one format an cover also other things like cameras or mixers. I hope it will help to build a comunity of analog video users.

I have a Sony VO-9800 that won't eject a large shell cassette. The tape is threaded around the head. The TC display shows "Error-02". Does anybody know how to manually unthread and eject the tape? Anybody know what the error code means? Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe,Is the 'stand-by' light still on? That would normally indicate that the tape hasn't fully loaded which is why it won't eject. Can you play, wind or rewind the tape?

I haven't unloaded a tape manually for a long time but seem to recall there is a worm-wheel on the right hand side of the loading mechanism. You will have to turn that and extremely slowly things will move.

I have a problem with the dynamic tracking of a BVU-820 recorder. I'am going through the alignment of DT board, does anybody have any ideas of getting rid of the noise on the screen when you use the suttle control when you go frame by frame. We use these U-Matic to record date on the side of the imiage. so if the imiage has a noise in the imiage we lose the data.

I solved the threading and eject problem. I spoke by phone to a professional video service tech at Sony's service center in New Jersey, USA who knew the VO-9800 backwards and forwards. Yes, there is a worm gear attached to a belt driven pulley that moves the threading actuator. In the VO-9800, that worm gear is on the left hand side of the machine. And yes, it takes forever to unthread the tape as it is a gear reduction type setup. After winding all the threading arms back to their initial postions, I wound the tape elevator gear by hand to eject the cassette. I powered the deck up and all error codes had been cleared. The deck has been working for the last three days with no problems.

At School we have a BVU-800 and a BVU-820, we are trying to figure out how to hook them up. We have an edit controller( It's not a sony controller though, can't remember what it is) We also have portable deck, camera and a couple of monitors. We want to set it up to synchronise with our digital audio suite. We have the 9-pin cables and so on, so any advice?

Maciek Szymanski

[email protected]_SPAM.org

Hi John!

To set up an edit suite you will need following connections:

- Controller to PLAYER with 9-pin RS-232 cable (or 33-pin parallel).

- Controller to RECORDER with 9-pin RS-232 cable (or 33-pin parallel).

- Video from PLAYER out to RECORDER in. Best will be with a 7-pin DUB cable, but a standard BNC composite cable will do. You will have more picture degradation.

- Audio from PLAYER out to RECORDER in with two XLR to XLR cables.

- Video and audio monitor from PLAYER to monitor (special monitor/TV socket).

- Video and audio monitor from RECORDER to monitor (special monitor/TV socket).

You may add some additional eqipment (mixers, titler, video processor etc) in video and audio route between PLAYER and RECORDER. Also sometimes controller may use a reference video signal from PLAYER or RECORDER for synchronisation, especially if used with TBC, but it's not required.

I have 2 Sony 5000 series that I am wanting to sell. Problem....I and the machines are in South Africa and I'm guessing that most of you are alsewhere in the world. Ok, thanks for the info. The controller is a FOR.A EC-740.I think this will work?

Maciek Szymanski

John!

In U-Matcis timecode is passed through RS-232 interface. Normally timecode from the player and the recorder and used as reference for controlling the machines. Your EC-740 is a three machine controller. I don't know this particular unit, but generally it's intended for controlling two players and one recorder. If your audio equipment has RS-232 interface and timecode you may use as a secon player for performing audio inserts. There should be also some GPI outputs on the controller. These outputs can be used for controlling other equipment, and switching functions of the machines. The setup generally depends on what you want to do with it.

The audio recorder is a Mackie HDR. It does not have RS422, unfortunately, but it can clock off video. We tried this and it does clock. The HDR does have Midi timecode, so would some sort of converter work?

Also, the edit controller seems unresponsive to anything I press, I don't know whether this is because we haven't hooked it up right, or if it's broken...

I'm running into transport problems with most of the Ampex 197 BCA-20 U-matic cassettes I'm trying to dub. I just acquired a VP-9000 to replace the VP-7000 I used before. As far as I remember, the VP-7000 could play and rewind these cassettes, but that machine no longer powers up. The VP-9000 plays and rewinds the Eastman KCS-20 cassettes just fine, but the Ampex seem to be a pretty consistent problem. My experience with Ampex "sticky-shed syndrome" on 1/2-inch audio tape makes me wonder if there is a similar problem with these, but I don't see any residue on the guides or heads. I'm also wondering if it's something about the cassette shell that's causing problems, or if the VP-9000 is simply in need of adjustment.

Hope this board is still active. Any ideas?

Hello,

Does anyone know of a quick way of identifying if a tape is recorded as low band or hi band?

Thanks,

Chris

The only way is to pop it in a machine, there are no markings on the actual tape, like VHS vs SVHS. If you play the tape in a low-band machine, say a VO5 or 7 series, and the picture is B/W - it'll be a high band tape. Similarly, put the tape in a BVU machine and it plays in B/W, the tape is low band. As far as I know only the VO9 series play both low and high band tapes but I don't recall it actually showing what it is.

Hi John,

Sorry, can't find the details on the 5630 at the moment but they are quite common little globes. If you can check the voltage with a multimeter you can take out some of the guess work, but I would expect them to be either 6V or 12V.Just pop into your local Jaycar or Dick Smith and look for something like this:http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL2685&CATID=21&form=CAT&SUBCATID=402They are really cheap so just get a few different ones and see which work best for you. They are not a critical item.Good luck.

Hi Lee,Nope, the tape doesn't care. It can be recorded in NTSC, PAL or SECAM for that matter. But once recorded in a specific format, you'll need a similar machine to play it back.

i have recently bougt a Sony VO-9600P recorder, for viewing some old tapes. I was able play only 1 tape...Each time I switch on the power button, the VCR starts rewinding a little bit. Then, when I am trying to load a tape, the "Standby" indicator immediately lights on and the VCR seems "asleep", as the VO-9600P doesn't load the tape. The misfunction seems to be a black trap located on the left of the tape tray. When I gently push it with a screwdriver, the Standby indicator lights on. Does somebody already encounters this kind of problem? I would be very grateful if somebody could help me to fix this issue. Big thanks & regards, Amon

Hi there

We have a VP-7030 which has just started giving me problems. When I press 'play' the tape plays back for up to 2 seconds then I loose display on the TV. The tape keeps turning and if I press 'pause' I get display back (on a paused frame). I am able to 'fast forward' through the tape with full display. But as soon as I press 'play' the screen just goes blank. I am connected directly to my TV using the rear BNC video output on the player. Anyone got any ideas whats going on? Thanks! Dan Smith

Hi everyone. I'm new to the site. I have just been given a Umatic 9600 SP. It looks in immaculate condition and I need to transfer a number of old Umatics to digital. When I play a tape, I get what looks like a half picture on the monitor. I can make out the image but it feels like a sync problem of some sort. Cleaned the heads as described in an online manual but the problem persists. I know it's difficult without seeing pictures but anyone got any ideas? Anyone a Umatic owner in Surrey? Thanks Alot

However I do need to transfer quite a few of my u-matic archive to DV (could be as many as 200 x 20min tapes). Perhaps a deal could be struck?
